Tingling in the mammary glands most often occurs before menstruation. It is often accompanied by breast swelling and pain when pressed. This is caused by fluctuations in hormones - normally, in the second half of the menstrual cycle, the hormone progesterone increases, which can contribute to the development of such symptoms. AT this case treatment is not required - breast tingling in the premenstrual period is considered a natural phenomenon.

In some cases, this symptom does not stop with the onset of menstruation or appears on their first day. It is also associated with hormonal changes in the body. Often this condition is accompanied abrupt changes mood, general deterioration of well-being.

During pregnancy, stabbing pains most often occur in the last trimester. They can appear earlier - throughout the entire period of bearing a baby, the glandular tissue of the breast grows, which may be accompanied by discomfort. Tingling is the result of compression of the nerve endings with an increase in the mammary glands.

During breastfeeding, stabbing pains are not considered a pathology. This sign is especially pronounced in the first days of lactation - changes in the structure of the mammary glands and the flow of milk can appear in a similar way.

Pathological causes

If a discomfort are present constantly and do not depend on the influence of the monthly cycle, manifesting themselves outside the period of pregnancy and lactation, then most likely their cause is the course of any disease. Most often this can be caused the following diseases:

  1. . Accompanied by, intensifying when touched. When can be detected - their edges may be fuzzy or have clear boundaries. In some cases, there is a discharge from the nipples - their color varies from transparent to greenish or brownish.
  2. . Occurs when the feeding process is improperly organized, resulting in milk stagnation. It is characterized by hardening of the breast, its redness and severe soreness. May be present in only one of the glands.
  3. Neoplasms in the chest. They may be benign or malignant. Manifested by pain in the chest, the presence of seals. During the course, dark ones appear, the shape of the mammary gland and the areola change.
  4. Diseases of the spine. Pain in the chest area can provoke osteochondrosis of the spine, accompanied by hernias, protrusions, scoliosis. Unpleasant sensations in this case are aggravated after physical exertion, when the weather changes, or when you stay in an uncomfortable position for a long time.
  5. Endocrine diseases. In violation of the production of hormones, the appearance of constant pain in the chest, its enlargement, clear secretions from the nipples.
  6. Diseases of the cardiovascular and nervous systems. Their presence is manifested by tingling in the left chest, which may be accompanied by sharp, burning or paroxysmal pain.
  7. Intercostal neuralgia. May occur as a result of osteochondrosis of the spine. Its signs are acute girdle pains in the chest, aggravated by movement or breathing.

All of the above diseases require immediate medical advice. If their occurrence is suspected, it is necessary to undergo a diagnosis of the body, which includes mammography, ultrasound of the mammary glands, X-ray or MRI of the spine, hormonal studies and blood tests for the presence of inflammatory or oncological processes.

Tingling during lactation

In most cases, tingling without other symptoms is normal. breastfeeding. This is how hormonal changes in the body can manifest themselves in given period, which is accompanied by a significant increase in the hormone prolactin, which is responsible for the functioning of the mammary glands and the lactation process. Tingling may occur during feeding or with a strong swelling of the breast immediately before it - this is considered normal and does not require treatment.

If a this feature accompanied by severe soreness of the chest, its compaction, redness and increased local or general temperature body, it is most often caused by milk stasis. Usually this phenomenon occurs in young inexperienced mothers who incorrectly attach the baby to the breast or neglect other feeding rules.

To prevent milk stagnation, or lactostasis, you must follow all the rules of lactation:

  • the child should capture the nipple along with the areola;
  • feeding should be regular and continue until the baby is completely saturated;
  • you need to apply the baby to both breasts, using different postures - this will ensure the complete suction of milk;
  • you can not wear small bras - they squeeze the milk ducts.

The resulting lactostasis is rarely treated with medication. To eliminate it, it is necessary to regularly carry out gentle breast massage before and after feeding. More frequent application of the baby will ensure the complete emptying of the mammary glands, as a result of which the symptoms will be alleviated. As a rule, this condition goes away on its own with the normalization of milk production and with the formation of a feeding regimen.

  • bad habits - smoking, alcohol;
  • childbirth in adulthood;

In order to exclude pathological causes symptom, a mammogram should be performed. A similar examination is recommended to take place once a year for women over 40 years old. In more early age one examination every 2-3 years is sufficient.

What can cause tingling in the chest

Tingling in the mammary gland a rare event with which a woman can consult a doctor. There can be many reasons for the appearance of such sensations, and the feeling can occur both in both glands, and only in the left or only in the right. Most often, when describing any sensations in the chest, women choose the word “tingling”, and this symptom is especially common in those who are of reproductive age.

All pain in the mammary gland can be divided into two large groups depending on what causes these feelings.

Non-dangerous tingling

Stitching chest pain can occur in women during the premenstrual period. Such pain is not considered dangerous and is not treated in any way. Sensations are formed due to the fact that the hormone-dependent tissue of the gland grows a little and compresses the nerve endings.

Pain associated with menstruation may occur in the left or right breast, or may affect both glands.

Stitching sensations in the chest can form during the period of bearing a child. The reasons are the same as in the premenstrual period: the hormone-dependent tissue of the gland grows, preparing to provide the child with milk, which compresses the nerve endings.

Sensations can also accompany the process of breastfeeding. True, in this case, a woman should treat herself with the utmost attention, since not all stabbing pains in the left or right chest are normal during this period.

The fact is that during breastfeeding, pain can be not only harmless and natural, but also be evidence of the development of pathology. If the glands become edematous, and seals can be felt in them, then this indicates that mastitis is developing and an urgent need to consult a doctor.

If not one of the periods occurs in a woman's life in this moment, so pain is most likely caused by some kind of pathology. In this case, it is recommended to contact not only a mammologist, but also consult a therapist.

Dangerous tingle

Stitching pains in the left or right mammary gland are not a symptom of any one disease, therefore, if these sensations develop, you should not engage in self-diagnosis, it is better to contact a professional.

The most common causes of stabbing pain in the left or right chest may be the following:

Tingling under left breast

If it hurts only left breast, or rather, even under it, then the reasons are rarely safe and you should not worry about them.

Most often, pain on the left under the breast is formed due to:

Stitching pain in the gland is formed not only because of harmless cyclic changes. It can be a sign of a serious pathology. If a woman is not sure that everything is fine, then it is better to play it safe and once again seek help from a doctor.

It is necessary to be attentive to yourself and note whether the pain is associated with menstrual cycle or other physiological changes in the body. If the answer is yes, then there is no need to worry.

If not, then you should start looking for the reasons for this unpleasant pathology and treat them.

Tingling in the mammary gland

Often girls complain about various kinds tingling in the chest. And they are not always harmless - sometimes they indicate the development of a disease.

Tingling in the mammary gland - causes

Chest pain is usually divided into two types depending on what causes it:

  • cyclic;
  • non-cyclic.

Painful manifestations in the form of tingling can be caused by a number of changes that occur inside the glandular tissue:

  1. The most common cause is the menstrual cycle, when regularly a few days before menstruation, the breasts swell, giving a feeling that it pricks in the mammary gland.
  2. During pregnancy or lactation, when the milk ducts are modified and prepared for the feeding process.
  3. Tingling also causes mastopathy in the developmental stage, as well as neoplasms and wen.
  4. Diseases of the thyroid gland (disturbances in the production of female sex hormones by it cause similar pain).
  5. The formation of a sebaceous gland cyst sometimes also causes tingling in the mammary gland.
  6. The formation of benign or, much more dangerous, malignant tumors.

The first two causes (cyclical) cannot be considered symptoms of the disease, but only side effects natural processes occurring in a woman's body reproductive age. The rest is a real cause for concern when you need to contact a gynecologist and a mammologist for a full examination.

Features of tingling pain in the mammary gland

Before you panic and look for signs terrible disease, you need to carefully listen to the pain and watch it. If it is stabbing in the left mammary gland, then this may indicate the presence of problems:

  • with the heart (sometimes such pain is given precisely in the superficial tissues in the chest area);
  • with the spine (tingling pain syndrome can be triggered by cervical or thoracic osteochondrosis, which also “comes around” in the region of the left mammary gland);
  • intercostal neuralgia (it often disguises itself as heart or intrathoracic pain).

If the tingling is not associated with menstruation or pregnancy, causing significant pain and discomfort, then you should immediately contact a mammologist to establish accurate diagnosis and treatment at an early stage of the disease.

Causes of tingling in the breast

When asked if you have experienced tingling in the breast, most women will answer in the affirmative. The reasons for such discomfort can, of course, be harmless. But sometimes such sensations are caused by pathologies. Just do not immediately panic and think, for example, about cancer. Let's see what it can be connected with.

Tingling in the mammary glands is a common phenomenon. We can say for sure that every woman experienced it at least once in her life. It can stab both in both and in one breast. Very often, women of reproductive age face such a problem. Painful sensations in the mammary gland doctors call the term: "mastalgia". Doctors advise not to disregard any unusual sensations in the chest, because they can be associated with mammological diseases that require serious and timely treatment.

Let's try to find the answer why tingling “sounds” in the chest, when it is dangerous, and when it is associated with physiological characteristics female body or special condition.

The Common Case: Non-Dangerous Causes of Tingling

Let's start with physiological reasons that cause tingling in the breast:

  • menstruation or a few days before the onset of menstruation. During this period in female body hormonal changes dramatically. This process is often accompanied by mild pain in the breast, which women describe as tingling. Such sensations are repeated regularly - every month before the onset of " critical days»;
  • ovulation. Many women have what is called ovulatory syndrome. They feel the release of the egg from the follicle, and in the truest sense of the word. And one of the specific sensations that occurs on such days is “needles” in the mammary glands;
  • pregnancy. In it happy time organism future mother hard preparing for the upcoming breastfeeding. This is the reason for the discomfort in the chest;
  • lactation. Quite tangible tingling and twitching pain - such sensations in some women are accompanied by the process of feeding. They arise because milk is formed in the body, the milk ducts change, and this does not pose a threat to the life of a woman. But, unfortunately, pain can also indicate the development of mastitis, so when similar discomfort you need to examine your chest. If any seals are found, it is better to see a doctor.

There is a problem: pathological factors that cause breast tenderness

Whatever the pain in the mammary gland - stabbing, aching, bursting, it can signal diseases. Moreover, these are not always the diseases that a mammologist deals with. Such sensations occur with cardiac pathologies, disorders in the thyroid gland and other diseases. For example, they can be provoked by the spine.

Here are the most common pathological causes of tingling that require urgent and competent treatment:

  • mastopathy and mastitis. Many new mothers are aware of such a problem as tingling in the breast during lactation. This often happens with improper breastfeeding - if you rarely give the baby a breast, do not change it at each next feeding, do not express the rest of the milk. In addition to soreness, a woman can detect seals by self-examination. Even if she did not find any bumps in the mammary glands, but noticed symptoms such as redness or blueness of the skin around the nipples, sharp pain when pressed, it is better to visit a doctor and do an ultrasound. Mastitis usually develops in one of the glands. Mastopathy is characterized by increased pain two days before menstruation;
  • cyst. She usually doesn't severe pain. But if the nerve bursts or squeezes, it will start to bother stabbing pain. With such a pathology, the help of surgeons is required, since the cyst will have to be removed;
  • violations by of cardio-vascular system. It is heart problems that can cause "colitis" in the left chest. The pain in this case will be felt as a tingling and burning sensation, which is sometimes accompanied by a violation heart rate, shortness of breath, panic;
  • intercostal neuralgia. A rather unpleasant condition in which there is dagger pain or mild tingling in the left or right chest. They get stronger when you turn the body. The localization of pain depends on which nerve is affected. It is quite difficult to distinguish such pain from heart pain, you will have to do an ECG;
  • disorder in the thyroid gland. Since it is this gland that provides the production of sex hormones, its dysfunction can result in a violation of the formation of estrogens. This will lead to problems with the mammary glands. But it is almost impossible to find out about hormonal imbalance on your own - you need to visit an endocrinologist and take tests;
  • sick spine and joint problems. With displacements of the vertebrae, impaired posture, salt deposition, osteochondrosis, nerves and blood vessels are compressed. This is manifested, including tingling in the back and chest. Their intensity depends on weather conditions, stressful situations and physical activity;

  • tumors. Changes can also manifest themselves in this way. Mostly they are of good quality. Such tumors, unlike cancerous ones, grow slowly. Unfortunately, in 2% of cases, cancer is still found. If it grows in the mammary gland malignancy, then at first this process is asymptomatic. Then the woman begins to feel severe cramps in her chest. The mammary gland can change its shape, sometimes appear purulent discharge(but that's all late stages), the temperature rises, a painful lump is felt in the chest. At the slightest suspicion of oncology, it is necessary to contact a mammologist as soon as possible.

The mammary glands in women are a sensitive organ that responds to any changes in the hormonal background. Hormones govern their development and growth, functioning in adulthood and involution associated with aging. A woman listens sensitively to any painful sensations in her chest, suspecting that something was wrong. But not always burning and pain in the mammary gland speak of pathology. Feelings may be related to physiological states, periodically occur during menstruation. However, if the discomfort is constant, then you should not delay a visit to the doctor.

  • physiological changes;
  • pathological processes in the mammary glands endocrine system;
  • chest injury;
  • squeezing with tight linen;
  • diseases that are not related to the mammary glands (osteochondrosis, neuralgia).

Changes in the mammary gland during menstruation, during pregnancy and lactation

In the first phase of the menstrual cycle, there is a maximum level of estrogens responsible for the maturation of the egg. In the 2nd half of the cycle, progesterone and prolactin play a decisive role, ensuring the preservation of pregnancy. During this period, there is a slight increase in the volume of the gland due to the swelling of the ducts and lobules, and the flow of blood to them increases. Edema occurs, so before menstruation there is a burning sensation, pain when touching the chest.

An increase in prolactin levels during pregnancy causes changes associated with lactation after childbirth. During this period and during lactation, burning, tingling in the mammary glands is the norm.

After weaning the child from the breast, involution occurs (reverse development of the gland). At the same time, burning and other discomfort in the chest disappear.

Pathologies that cause burning

The cause of all these conditions are, as a rule, hormonal disorders that occur:

  1. During periods of increased hormonal changes ( puberty pregnancy, menopause).
  2. As a result of disruption of the natural course physiological processes( , interruption of lactation by artificial means or early cessation of breastfeeding, lack of sexual life in a mature woman).
  3. In diseases of the ovaries (polycystosis, ovarian dysfunction, inflammatory and infectious processes).
  4. With deviations in the work of the thyroid gland, the hormones of which directly affect the production of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone.
  5. In connection with the use of hormonal drugs or contraceptives.

Breast diseases

Burning in the mammary gland occurs in various diseases.

Mastopathy. Milk ducts and lobules are compressed due to abnormal growth of connective (fibrous) and adipose tissue. Exist different forms this disease, in which one of the tissues predominates or voids form inside it. In this case, nodules appear, blood supply is disturbed. With small changes, a woman may not feel any discomfort in her breasts for years. If the process develops, then a burning sensation appears in the mammary glands, and it intensifies before menstruation, and after it ends, as a rule, weakens.

The cause of mastopathy and burning is also damage to the tissues of the chest with bruises, injuries, after operations.

Breast cyst. When growing connective tissue cysts appear in it ranging in size from 0.5 mm to 5-7 cm. If their size is less than 5 mm, then with the help of hormonal drugs containing progesterone, it is possible to prevent an increase or achieve their disappearance. The cyst grows, there is a danger of suppuration. In the inflammatory process, burning is accompanied by an increase in temperature. Large cysts are usually removed surgically.

Fibroadenoma- a benign tumor. It arises from the nodes of the overgrown fibrous tissue. The tumor is a smooth round seal. It is usually felt in the upper outer part of the chest. It can be located both between the milk ducts and inside them. With this disease, a constant burning sensation is felt in the chest, regardless of the menstrual cycle. May swell The lymph nodes armpits. Due to swelling, there are pulling pains.

In the case of an increase in the size of the tumor (especially during pregnancy), it is removed to prevent malignant degeneration. Leaf fibroadenoma is especially dangerous. It is a slit-like cavity having a leaf structure filled with a mucous mass. Such a tumor grows rapidly, atypical cells are found in it. Often it develops into breast sarcoma. Therefore, it is important to detect and remove it in a timely manner.

Breast infarction. May occur at the end of pregnancy or immediately after childbirth. Tissue necrosis occurs along the edge of the gland, burning and pain are felt, and the temperature rises. This condition occurs due to too strong an influx of milk that does not correspond to the volume of the gland. The tumor is benign, but it is removed, since an abscess may form, and the diagnosis is complicated by the fact that a pregnant woman cannot have a mammogram.

Mastodigenia. This condition sometimes occurs in women during menopause, when the reverse development (involution) of the mammary glands occurs. In this case, the glandular tissue is gradually replaced by connective and adipose tissue. Appear external changes: glands decrease in size, lose elasticity. This is the norm. But if the volume of adipose tissue prevails over the rest, the size of the breast, on the contrary, increases, a burning sensation appears in the mammary gland, nagging pain, swelling. The reason is that estrogens are produced and accumulated in adipose tissue, which leads to abnormal changes in the mammary glands. dangers cancerous degeneration this disease does not. Treatment consists of taking anti-inflammatory and hormonal drugs.

Diagnostics

Many diseases of the mammary glands, including cancer, may not have symptoms for a long time. At some point, deterioration sets in with serious consequences. Therefore, if there is a burning sensation in the mammary gland, you need to make sure that it is not a sign of dangerous conditions.

It needs to be emphasized: Every woman should be able to conduct a breast self-examination in order to notice seals, changes in shape, differences in the size of the glands, and asymmetry of the nipples in time. It must be done every month. If anomalies are detected, it is urgent to come to the examination to the doctor.

The most common diagnostic methods for burning and other abnormal sensations are ultrasound, mammography, ductography. To obtain accurate information, a biopsy of the tumor tissue is taken, it is carried out histological examination to detect abnormal cells. A blood test is done for tumor markers.

Diseases of the mammary glands are very diverse and are characterized by numerous clinical manifestations: pain, including pressure, changes in general view glands, the shape or structure of the glands (the appearance of seals, tumor-like formations in usually soft tissue).

Pain in one or both breasts (mastalgia) is one of the most common complaints in women of any age, but young women with menstrual function are more likely to experience this problem.

Most of the fears of women in this case are associated with the risk of developing breast cancer. However, isolated pain sensations are rarely a sign of this formidable disease, which is usually characterized by the concomitant presence of a tumor-like formation.

Causes of pain in one or both mammary glands:

* Hormonal changes during puberty (so-called puberty), as well as during pregnancy or menopause
* Premenstrual syndrome
* Mammary cancer
* Lactation
* Infectious diseases of the mammary glands (mastitis, breast abscess)
* Breast trauma, including surgical treatment
* Taking certain medications: estrogen-containing, digoxin, methyldopa, spironolactone, oxymetholone and chlorpromazine.

Main clinical options:

1. Cyclic mastalgia - pain associated with the menstrual cycle.

This type of violation is characterized by:

* The occurrence of pain in the premenstrual period and the weakening or disappearance with the onset of menstruation. Sometimes there is no clear connection with the onset of menstruation
* Usually bilateral localization, mainly in the upper, outer areas of the mammary glands
* different intensity painful sensations - from dull, aching (more often) to pronounced, making it difficult to move your hands, sleep
* Pain may radiate to axillary areas or hand
* The examination may reveal slight tuberosity of the breast tissue
* Severity clinical manifestations usually increases with age and decreases sharply or disappears after menopause.

The occurrence of cyclic mastalgia is associated with a change in hormonal levels. More than 2/3 of women, usually of young reproductive age, suffer from this type of disorder, although similar complaints are known in postmenopausal women receiving replacement therapy hormonal drugs.

2. Acyclic mastalgia - the occurrence of chest pain not associated with the menstrual cycle. This type of disorder usually affects women over 40 years of age.

Characteristic:

* Pain is often unilateral
* Localization - mainly in the middle part of the mammary gland, around the nipple
* Acute, burning, cutting pain
* Can be either intermittent or continuous

Localized, long-lasting pain in the mammary gland may be associated with the presence of a fibroadenoma in it ( benign tumor) or cysts. However, in order to avoid more serious reasons acyclic mastalgia (for example, breast cancer), it is recommended to contact a specialist as soon as possible.

3. Mastitis and other infectious diseases. Except local symptoms(pain, redness, swelling of the mammary gland) are accompanied by symptoms of intoxication (fever, sometimes with chills, headache, loss of appetite, general weakness and etc.). Mastitis often occurs in postpartum period due to the penetration of pathogens through the microcracks of the nipple and stagnation in the gland of milk.

4. Breast cancer. In addition to pain sensations of varying degrees (but they may be absent!) It is characterized by the presence of a tumor-like formation with fuzzy contours, more often in the upper outer areas of the mammary gland, a change in the skin over the tumor in the form of wrinkling or " orange peel”, retraction of the nipple or discharge from it. The risk of developing breast cancer is higher in nulliparous women or women who gave birth to their first child late, in women with a hereditary predisposition, with overweight body, the presence of mastopathy.

Compulsory diagnostic measure is breast self-examination. It should become part of the routine of all women over the age of 20. Regular self-examination will allow you to get to know the shape and structure of your mammary glands well and easily identify any changes in them. Self-examination should be carried out once a month, preferably at the end of each menstruation or at the same time in postmenopausal women.

Self-examination rules:

* stand in front of a mirror
* first examine the mammary glands in front and from the sides in 4 positions:
o with hands down
o with hands up
o with hands placed on hips
o when the torso is leaning forward
* lifting left hand, right neatly in a circular motion palpate the entire left breast from top to bottom
* similarly, but with your left hand feel the right mammary gland
* lie on your back, placing under right shoulder roller and laying his right hand behind his head. With straight fingers of the left hand, feel the right mammary gland from the periphery to the nipple
* similarly examine the left mammary gland right hand
* Gently squeeze the nipple to make sure there are no pathological discharge
* feel the armpits.

Contact your doctor if you find:

* change in the shape, size or asymmetry of the breast
* thickening of tissue in the mammary gland or armpit
* nipple retraction
* nipple discharge
* change in the skin of the breast (redness, wrinkling, like "orange" or " lemon peel»)

What should a woman with mastalgia do?

2. Annual consultation with a mammologist (specialist in diseases of the mammary glands), gynecologist or oncologist - especially for women over 35 years of age.

3. Women over 35 years of age (especially those at risk of developing breast cancer) are recommended to have an annual mammogram - an x-ray method for examining the mammary glands. Mammography is one of the methods early diagnosis breast cancer.

4. Other diagnostic methods include ultrasound procedure, targeted biopsy of suspicious areas of breast tissue.

In most women with mastalgia, breast examination and mammogram results are normal. In this case, the diagnosis of breast cancer is unlikely and pain is most likely associated with changes in the mammary glands against the background of physiological hormonal fluctuations.

Treatment

In 60-80% of cases, pain in the mammary gland, in the absence of seals in its tissue, disappears on its own.
However, severe pain that makes it difficult for you daily activity lasting more than a few days each month or the presence of symptoms suggestive of inflammatory process(fever, redness and swelling of the breast, tenderness on pressure) require treatment.

To date, there is no sufficient scientific data on the effectiveness therapeutic measures with cyclic mastalgia.

It is recommended to wear a suitable bra, diet with low content fat and restriction diet products containing methylxanthines (for example, caffeinated products), vitamins B and E. Although the effectiveness of dietary measures and vitamin intake remains unproven, there are cases of pain relief in some women who adhere to these recommendations.

If these measures are ineffective, consult a doctor, because. oral contraceptives or danazol (an antigonadotropic drug) may be required to correct hormonal disorders. Avoid self-medication, including herbal preparations.

Treatment of acyclic mastalgia is based on the treatment of the underlying disease. If the cause is not established, apply the treatment plan as for cyclic mastalgia.

When a cyst or tumor is detected, apply surgery, which can be supplemented with a malignant nature of the tumor with radiation or chemotherapy.

Treatment of mastitis, depending on the stage and severity of the process, includes antibiotic therapy with or without surgical opening of the inflammatory focus.

Dear women, remember that your breasts can be not only a perfect creation of Nature, but also a source of health-related problems. Therefore, if there is pain and / or a change in the shape, size and consistency of the mammary glands, contact a specialist. This will help preserve your health, and in some cases your life!
