In the experiment, celandine preparations cause a delay in the growth of malignant tumors, have a fungistatic and bacteriostatic effect on tuberculosis pathogens.

The alkaloid chelidonine acts like morphine: it causes depression, then paralysis of the central nervous system.

Homochelidine is a convulsive poison with a strong local anesthetic effect.

Protopin reduces the reactivity of the autonomic nervous system, tones the muscle tissue of the uterus.

  1. Celandine grass, crushed raw materials. Choleretic, anti-inflammatory agent.
  2. Celandine herb extract is a part of complex preparations ("Hepatofalk Planta", "Holagogum", "Holaflux", etc.).

Celandine as a plant medicinal properties has been known since ancient times. The ancient Greeks called the plant chelidonium. The sap of the plant was used to treat eye diseases. Especially strong was the belief in the properties of chelidonium to cure blindness and thorns. AT modern medicine celandine is used mainly for the treatment of skin diseases. In folk medicine, the plant is used in the treatment internal organs, joints, diseases of the female genital area.

In addition to many useful compounds, it contains about 20 toxic ones that can have harmful effect on many pathogens and on the human body. Therefore, when treating celandine, it is always necessary to strictly observe the recommended dosage in order to avoid side effects and complications.

Celandine description, where it grows and what it looks like

The cleaner is perennial grass, belongs to the poppy family. Its flowers have 4 yellow petals, after flowering of which fruits ripen - a narrow-cylindrical pod with many small seeds.

The stem of the plant is branching, straight and can reach a height of up to 1 meter. The leaves are feathery in shape and rich green in color, with a bluish tint below. Tapered root light brown.

Celandine flowering begins in April-May and can last all summer until August. In some places you can see flowering plants in the month of September.

When the stem or other parts of the grass are broken, an orange-colored juice is released, which turns red on contact with air. At the juice bad smell with a bitter and acrid taste.

Celandine grows in many places and is a common plant for Europe, Asia, America with a temperate climate.

It is very unpretentious to growing conditions and perfectly adapts to poor soils. Even if the plant is cut off at the root, it will grow back in the same place. Favorite places - along roads, fences, in thickets of bushes.

All parts of the celandine are poisonous and in no case should the juice be used undiluted for oral administration.

The celandine has several folk names. The Latin name for celandine "Chelidonium" comes from the Greek word, which translates as "swallow". From ancient Greek times to the Enlightenment, there was a belief among doctors that the swallow collects the juice of celandine in its beak and digs in the eyes of the chicks, saving the offspring from blindness. The legend was widespread, so the plant was named after the swallow. In one medieval poem, the bird is called chelidon, and the plant is called chelidonium.

There is another version of why the celandine was named after a migratory bird: it is known that it blooms with the onset of the arrival of swallows and fades by the time they depart.

The Russian name is associated with the property of the plant to reduce warts. Therefore, in everyday life, celandine is called a warthog. Celandine is called celandine for its peculiarity to grow near the fence. Golden grass - for sunny coloring. Celandine in Russia had another name - jaundice, because healers used to treat the liver with infusion of celandine. In Russia, it was customary to treat almost any ailment with leaves and flowers.

It is worth noting that two types of celandine are known - large celandine and Asian celandine. But modern scientists distinguish only one type of celandine - great celandine. AT folk treatment usually use a large celandine.

The chemical composition of celandine

The plant has a rich chemical composition, which determines all the numerous medicinal properties. Roots, leaves and inflorescences are rich in complex biologically active substances. Basically, these are alkaloids. In total there are about 20 species in it. Among the main ones are:

  • chelidonin - lowers blood pressure and removes spasm, reduces excitability;
  • homochelidonin - has a mild analgesic effect;
  • protopin - enhances the work of the muscles of internal organs;
  • sanguiritrin - fights fungi, bacteria, Trichomonas, and also improves the contraction of the intestinal walls;
  • cheleretrin and sanguinarine - increase the contraction of the muscles of the bronchi, biliary and urinary tract, and the digestive tract.

Alkaloids are nitrogen-containing organic substances that are characterized by high physiological activity. At high concentrations, they can act as vegetable poisons. In small doses, they are used for therapeutic purposes.

Celandine roots contain a higher concentration of these substances than the aerial part of the plant. In an old plant, the concentration of alkaloids is also higher compared to young ones. This must be taken into account when collecting and preparing raw materials, when treating with celandine.

In addition to alkaloids, the plant contains:

Essential oil;

Saponins;

Flavonoids;

Organic acids: malic, citric, succinic;

Vitamins.

Medicinal properties of celandine

The chemical composition of celandine gives it powerful medicinal properties and gives a wide range of applications. All parts of the plant secrete healing juice, which has the following properties:

  • antimicrobial
  • antispasmodic
  • anti-inflammatory
  • painkillers
  • antiallergic
  • choleretic
  • wound healing
  • antifungal.

Essential oils, having antimicrobial and antispasmodic effect, help to eliminate spasms blood vessels and smooth muscles of the muscles of internal organs.

Saponins have a calming and diuretic effect. Flavonoids, one of the most powerful antioxidants, have a pronounced antispasmodic effect, provide good anti-allergic, antiviral and anti-cancer properties.

Organic acids improve metabolic processes. The presence of vitamin C and beta-carotene strengthens the immune system, and as antioxidants give an anti-cancer and antiviral effect.

Celandine indications for use

The spectrum of indications for the use of this medicinal plant very wide. It is used both locally to solve various external problems, and internally. Indications for the use of drugs from this plant are:

Diseases of the gallbladder and liver, which are associated with stagnation of bile, lethargy in the intestines, chronic diseases of the stomach and kidneys;

Rheumatism;

Inflammatory diseases of the throat;

Inflammation in the urinary tract;

Skin diseases;

High blood pressure;

Oncological diseases.

In some cases, it is used in the treatment of depression and neurosis.

Celandine juice and an ointment based on it are used to reduce warts, in the treatment of various skin rashes, including rashes associated with tuberculosis, ringworm, eczema, psoriasis, long non-healing wounds.

Effective celandine against the herpes virus, including the Epstein-Barr virus.

In folk medicine, drugs are used against cancer, although reliable scientific evidence of such use of the herb has not yet been given. Although Ukrainian scientists obtained positive results about the treatment of cancers such as testicular and ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, cancer of the esophagus and colon, skin cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma.

Studies are underway on the possibility of using celandine for the treatment of AIDS.

Rinse the hair with a decoction of the herb to get rid of dandruff.

Contraindications and side effects

Celandine, like any plant with strong healing properties, can be harmful if the dosage is exceeded. Before treatment, it is better to coordinate the use of drugs with your doctor.

Collection and preparation of celandine

Celandine grass can be bought at any pharmacy. Its price is low - 70-85 rubles per pack of 50 grams. The celandine is necessary in home first aid kit for the treatment of ailments that occur even in healthy person. These are cuts, weakened immunity, increased anxiety.

If, for some reason, pharmacy herbal medicines do not suit you, you can procure raw materials yourself. The grass is harvested during the flowering period in May or early June. The stems are cut 15 cm from the ground.

When collecting, pay attention to appearance leaves. Only healthy plants with juicy texture are suitable for drying. in green. In diseased leaves, the color is less bright. In folk medicine, the leaves, roots, stems of the plant are used. Juice can be collected at any time.

After harvesting the plant, it is immediately sent for drying. It is necessary to dry the celandine in a room with good ventilation. The grass should be laid out in a thin layer on the countertop or dried in a suspended state.
