And with high Kapha, blockages prevent the movement of nerve impulses.

The cause of nervous disorders are obstacles in the flow of Prana or its incorrect movement through subtle channels. Obstacles in the flow of Prana cause spasms, stiffness, numbness or paralysis, and improper movement causes tremors and involuntary movements.

Diseases of the nervous system are associated in Ayurveda with mental disorders, and it is believed that the mind and nerves are directly connected through a system of special channels. Therefore, in case of nervous disorders, the state of mind of the patient should also be carefully examined.

As a general tonic for the nervous system, representatives of Kapha are recommended a composition of brahmi and calamus in equal parts, which is taken with honey. With a Pitta constitution, brahmi is taken alone or with the addition of calamus in a ratio of 4:1 or 8:1, and ghee is used as anupana. In Vata constitution, calamus should be preferred, although brahmi may be useful in doses not exceeding that of calamus. Calamus and brahmi are taken with gi or with warm water.

In debilitating conditions and degenerative processes such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease, tonic herbs and restorative therapies are generally needed. Ashwagandha is best suited for this, which can be added to brahmi and calamus, which are taken as mentioned above. In Ayurveda, ashwagandha is also the main treatment for anxiety states accompanying many nervous disorders. Nerve tonics such as haritaki, guggul and bala are also good, as well as calamus and brahmi prepared with ghee or in the form of herbal jams (Brahma rasayan). No wonder there is a saying in everyday life: "All diseases are from nerves." Ayurveda explains that all violations metabolic processes start with airflow disturbance. The movement can be strong, very strong (storm, storm), or it can completely calm down, stop. In which place nerve vessels the air has stopped, there is a stagnation of prana. If there is no exchange, then the stagnant air or prana begins to rot. You can see for yourself when you breathe air in a room in which there is no air circulation. There, the air does not even sway, it stands still. We ourselves sometimes say that there is nothing to breathe here. We inhale air through the pores of the skin and nose, and then it passes through the channels of the nervous system and is called pranic flows.
Therefore, people say that all diseases are from the nerves, because the air, pranic flows are the first to be blocked. The circulatory system is identical to the nervous system, and if traffic jams and congestion arose from stale air or air with all kinds of impurities, then all traffic jams and congestion along its path are exactly repeated in the blood vessels .. The air in cities is especially polluted both from the exhaust gases of cars and from toxic substances in the air, emissions from industrial enterprises. The universe is constantly supported by the action of four forces: electricity, light, heat, magnetism. Emotions: Lies, betrayal, self-interest, fear, anger, envy, greed, treachery, treason, foul language, impure information from any transmitting sources, as well as violation of the environment - all this leads to violation of the movement of air in the channels of the nervous system. For this reason, it is so difficult to treat diseases of the nervous system, since there are many reasons on which the condition of the nerves depends. But Ayurveda claims that all diseases associated with the nervous system can be eliminated if you eat right and do not violate the internal forces of the body. If the majority of the population eats properly, the climate and relations both in an individual family and in the country as a whole will be restored faster. To restore the nervous system, knowledge is needed that will lead the mind to goodness. What to read? Instructions that are given in the Vedas, the Bible, the Koran and other sacred texts. It is necessary not only to read, but also to follow these instructions. This is the key to success.

Nerve strengthening herbs affect the functional activity of the nervous system. They may be stimulating or sedative effect and be used to correct excess or deficiency nerve function. They render strong impact on the mind and are useful for gaining mental health and clarity of mind, are additional tools in the treatment of mental disorders and diseases.

Most nerve-strengthening herbs are also antispasmodics: they relieve spasms of skeletal and smooth muscles, stop muscle tremors and convulsions. They can have a bronchodilatory effect, relieve spasms of the muscles of the bronchi, helping these with respiratory disorders. Others can relieve menstrual cramps and headaches.

Many of these herbs are aromatic, such as mint and valerian. This is because aromatic herbs act directly on Prana, the main energy of the nervous system, and themselves contain a large amount of Prana (air element). Such aromatic herbs open the mind and senses, purify the channels (meal), relieve pain, eliminate congestion and restore balance between body and mind.

Aromatic nerve-strengthening herbs are often carminative and gastric remedies eliminating intestinal gases and spasms. This relationship can be understood in the light of Ayurvedic physiology. Vata, being the dosha that controls the nervous system, accumulates in the large intestine, from where it penetrates into the tissue elements of the body. absorption takes place in the same large intestine nutrients, mostly oily, going to maintain the nervous and bone tissues. Therefore, affecting Vata in the large intestine affects Vata in the nervous system.

Ayurveda considers nervousness to be a manifestation of Vata, since Vata governs nervous reactions, has the nature of wind and is characterized by impulsiveness, inconstancy and over-sensitivity. Most diseases of the nervous system are caused by Vata disorder. Therefore, in seeking to cure nervous disorders, we must first of all take into account the aspect of Vata. In most cases neuralgic pains, lumbago, sciatica, paralysis and degenerative nervous disorders are Vata diseases.

However, other doshas, ​​when excited, can give rise to various emotional and nervous disorders - for example, excited Pitta can give rise to anger. In some cases, Vata can be excited or blocked by other doshas. At the basis of a condition that manifests itself as a violation of Vata, there may be a hidden excess of Pitta or Kapha. We must focus on the root cause, not the obvious consequences.

Emotions related to Vata, in particular fear and anxiety, weaken the kidneys and adrenal glands. They damage the nerves, cause insomnia, mental instability, neuralgic pains, convulsions and numbness, which can eventually lead to the exhaustion of the nervous tissue. Most nerve strengthening herbs, especially aromatic ones, energize Vata and thereby help eliminate the underlying stasis of Vata or vital energy.

Some of the herbs, in addition to being aromatic, have tamasic, i.e. heavy and blunting properties. They are especially suitable for both setting Vata accumulations in motion and for "grounding" it, as Vata lacks "earthiness" due to excess air and ether. These herbs include asafoetida, valerian, and garlic.

However, in case of insufficiency and weakness of nervous tissues, often caused by poor nutrition, nutritional tonics are required, such as ashwagandha or licorice (see "Tonics"). Overuse of aromatic nerve strengthening herbs can lead to back effect- to weaken the nerves - both because of their withering, and because of their excessive stimulating effect.

Emotions characteristic of Pitta - anger, envy, hatred, etc., warm up the blood, liver and heart. As a result, they can increase blood pressure, cause insomnia, irritability, mental and nervous disorders. They can also "burn out" the nerves, as is the case with a businesslike and aggressive lifestyle characterized by high Pitta.

Pitta-induced nervous disorders can be dispensed with using any nerve-strengthening herbs by using Pitta-reducing herbs such as bitter tonics or laxatives.

Most herbs that affect the mind are cooling. This is due to the fact that imbalances in this area are caused mainly by negative emotions, which are akin to Pitta and generate heat. A calm and clear mind is usually a cold mind. Therefore, many herbs that calm the mind, such as brahmi, are effective against Pitta.

Nervous conditions related to Kapha usually manifest as apathy, dullness, drowsiness, decreased activity of the nervous system. IN psychological aspect Kapha suffers from greed, desire and attachment to the past. In terms of the mind and nerves, Kapha needs stimulation. Best for Kapha are those nerve strengthening herbs that are aromatic, stimulating and decongesting. Most aromatic herbs, due to their drying nature, are favorable for Kapha.

Herbs that lull Vata or Pitta can invigorate Kapha, such as skullcap. Herbs work differently on different doshas. By calming one dosha, they can stimulate another.

Many herbs that calm the mind have a positive effect on all three doshas, ​​because when the doshas are in balance, the mind is at rest and vice versa. Therefore, some nerve-strengthening herbs, especially in small quantities or short-term use, suitable for all three doshas. Such herbs are called tridosha, i.e. herbs of the three doshas. Cooling aromatic herbs such as mint, chamomile, or fennel can be widely used as mild nerve tonics. Their drying effect reduces Kapha, their cooling effect weakens Pitta, and aromatic properties remove stagnant Vata.

As in other categories, among the nerve-strengthening herbs, warming and cooling can be distinguished. Cooling ones are usually better for Pitta, warming ones for Vata and Kapha (although cooling ones also reduce Kapha to some extent and eliminate Vata congestion).

Typical warming, strengthening nerves and anti-spasmodic herbs: calamus, asafoetida, basil, valerian, lady's slipper, guggul, camphor, myrica, myrrh, nutmeg, pennyroyal, wormwood, poppy seeds, garlic, medicinal sage, eucalyptus.

Typical cooling, nerve-strengthening and anti-spasmodic herbs: brahmi, bhringaraj, initial letter, verbena, jasmine, mullein, catnip, green mint, peppermint, passionflower, navel, motherwort, chamomile, sandalwood, oat straw, hops, thyme, skullcap, yam.

There are specific herbs that act on the nervous system that are more of a narcotic or are used to manufacture drugs. They contain alkaloids and other chemical compounds that determine their action. The specific effects of small amounts of chemicals that transcend the energy of taste are seen as manifestations of prabhava. These herbs are very powerful side effects can lead to paralysis. Many of them are poisonous, highly agitating to Pitta and should therefore be used with great care. Their description is beyond the scope of this book, although some of them are traditionally used in Ayurveda to achieve special effects. These include datura, foxglove, marijuana, and opium.

Metals, minerals and precious stones have a special effect on the mind and nervous system. Therefore, Ayurveda uses special preparations from these substances that are non-toxic to the human body. Their use is rooted in the ancient tradition of alchemy. They are called siddha yoga preparations. Many of them were used by the great Buddhist sage Nagarjuna, who was a well-versed physician in Ayurveda and is said to have lived for centuries. These drugs are also considered longevity drugs and are another characteristic of Ayurveda.
