Disease of the 21st century

Sad time. Eye charm.
Your farewell beauty is pleasant to me.
I love the lush nature of wilting...
A.S. Pushkin.

We all remember these lines from childhood. It is known that the great poet suffered from depression and most often she came to him in the fall. But this autumn sadness at the same time brought with it an incentive for creativity.

It is known that such an increase in activity in the fall is characteristic of humanitarian types. But truly creative individuals in our society are only about 10%, and for the rest, a dull autumn time can even cause severe depression.

Why does depression occur?

The exact cause of depression is not yet known. It is believed that the interaction of several factors leads to it. Heredity matters - in some families, depression occurs in every generation. However, depression also occurs in people whose families have never mentioned this disease. Pessimists and people with low self-esteem are predisposed to the influence of stress and the development of depression. A stressful situation (loss of loved ones, loss of a job, etc.) can trigger the development of the first episode of depression, especially if a person has a hereditary predisposition. Subsequent bouts of depression may develop for no apparent reason, but if stress is repeated in a person's life, then these episodes may be more frequent.

Under the influence of stress, the work of certain brain structures that are involved in the production of special chemicals - neurotransmitters (serotonin, adrenaline), which are involved in the transmission of impulses between the cells of the nervous system, is inhibited. Violation of these processes leads to depression.

A bit of history

The first mention of mood disorders can be found in Hippocrates (450 BC). He called them melancholy and mania. In 1896 German psychiatrist Kraepelin described the disease, which he called manic-depressive psychosis. This name was used by doctors until the end of the twentieth century.

AT modern classification diseases this disease is called "Bipolar affective disorder" and is included in the group of affective disorders (mood disorders).

Women, older people and teenagers are more susceptible to depression.

8-12% of men and 20-26% of women are at risk of developing depression during their lifetime. According to the World Health Organization, the prevalence of depressive conditions is now such that they are already in second place in terms of causes and duration of disability after cardiovascular diseases.

Depression - what is it?

When we're in a bad mood, we often say, "I'm depressed." But this is only the everyday meaning of the word.

Psychologists often talk about seasonal depression is a decrease in mood and performance in certain time of the year. Autumn, winter, spring depression are described. So the only time of the year without depression is summer?

AT medical concept depression- this is not just a bad mood, as is commonly believed, but a serious disease that has certain clinical manifestations. It can occur at any time of the year, but it often begins with seasonal depression. Depression as a disease is included in a group of diseases called " affective disorders”, i.e. mood disorders.

Man of moods

Depression is green melancholy, and joy in the soul, cheerfulness and activity are great. But too good is also not good. Oddly enough, but excessively elevated mood can also be a manifestation of the disease.

Such a person also complains of bouts of depression. He is not bothered by his sometimes overly elevated mood, because this is a great time for him. Then he experiences an emotional rise, he is ready to move mountains, if they only dare to stand in the way. He does not have enough day and night to complete a bunch of his affairs and he dreams of extending the day for at least another hour. These conditions are much less common than depression. At the same time, the behavior of a person changes dramatically, attracting the attention of loved ones, and this helps to timely seek help.

Until the end of the twentieth century, a disease with a characteristic alternation of manic and depressive states was called manic-depressive psychosis. By new classification it got a beautiful name: "Bipolar affective disorder."

The causes and mechanism of the development of the disease are similar to those of depression, because this is one group of diseases. But in the case of bipolar disorder, biochemical changes are more pronounced. In the treatment of depression, the mood of such a patient can go into the opposite (manic) phase, therefore, in this case you need to take drugs that lead to mood stability. In this case, it is necessary to be treated for years and stop only under the supervision of a specialist.

case from practice

A young man, let's call him Andrei, was admitted to the hospital for the first time, at the age of 30, in a state of severe depression.

The boy grew up in an incomplete family, without a father. Andrei was very smart and quick-witted, he taught himself to read and at the age of 5 he read fairy tales to children in kindergarten, he easily studied at school. He was a very kind and sociable person. In adolescence, he developed causeless mood swings. More often in the fall or spring, something happened to Andrey - he didn’t sleep well, woke up with difficulty in the morning, was lethargic all day long, sad, didn’t play with friends, sometimes quarreled with his mother when she was interested in his affairs. After 2 - 3 weeks, the depression passed and he again became the same. He did not apply anywhere, continued to study, albeit with difficulty, but he graduated from high school and technical school. Because of this illness, he was not taken to the army, then he got married and started doing business. But it became more and more difficult to work - in addition to depression, there were periods of unusually elevated mood, when a young businessman could not correctly assess the situation, took unreasonable risks, lost money and got into debt. When the mood declined, he assessed his behavior with horror, and depression followed. Drinking alcohol brought little relief, but at the same time problems in the family and a painful feeling of guilt towards loved ones. In moments of extreme despair, I did not want to see anyone, do anything, even live. Then Andrei took a ticket for any train and left "wherever his eyes look." But for some reason he always met kind people who, seeing his condition, helped him return home. After another “flight”, the man finally went to the doctor and began treatment.

After 2 weeks of treatment, Andrey felt much better and he started working again and stopped taking antidepressants. But the disease returned, and this time his "flight from himself" lasted a whole week.

Now Andrey continues treatment...

Manifestations of depression

Main symptoms:

  1. Decreased (depressed, depressed, dreary) mood.
  2. Loss of interest and pleasure in things and activities that used to be enjoyable.
  3. Decreased energy, which leads to increased fatigue and reduced activity.

If these typical symptoms last at least two weeks, every day and take up most of the day, then in this case we can talk about depression as a disease that needs to be treated.

There are also additional symptoms that often join the main symptoms of depression:

  • Decreased ability to concentrate and concentrate.
  • Low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence.
  • Thoughts of guilt and self-blame.
  • A gloomy and pessimistic vision of the future.
  • Thoughts or actions related to suicide or self-harm.
  • Sleep disturbances - insomnia, difficulty falling asleep or early awakenings.
  • Appetite disorders - more often its absence and weight loss.
  • Violation of sexual desire.
  • Noticeable lethargy or excessive fussiness.
  • Increased depression and depressive experiences in the morning and a slight improvement in the evening.

How to help?

If you see that you loved one depression - give it to him more attention, talk to him. Discuss his problems to find solutions together, give him support, remind him that you love him ... Try to distract him from gloomy thoughts. For this purpose, some entertainment can help, interesting film, a trip to the theater or a regular family dinner, and even some work done together. It is known that sweet foods, especially chocolate, improve the metabolism of serotonin in the body, leading to an improvement in mood. According to some information, no a large number of serotonin contain bananas.

You should not get carried away with alcohol - although it brings relief for a while, but after the termination of its action, depression returns in a more severe form due to the manifestations of a hangover syndrome.

Many patients with depression, especially women, find it useful to update their wardrobe by adding warm and bright colors to it, change their image in some way, visit a hairdresser, etc.

If, despite this, depressive manifestations persist, the help of a specialist - a psychologist or psychotherapist - is needed.

It must be remembered in any disease that the sooner treatment is started, the greater the chance of success.

Depression is the most "curable" of all mental disorders. Ongoing Research in this area led to the creation of new highly efficient medicines for the treatment of depression, which have virtually no negative side effects. With the right and enough long-term treatment depression often resolves completely, but if help is insufficient, the disease can become chronic.

With a mild depressive state, sometimes the help of a psychotherapist is enough, with more serious condition the use of drugs - antidepressants. Usually improvement occurs after 1 - 2 weeks of treatment and by the end of the month the condition improves significantly. However, it is necessary to continue treatment, since only the external manifestations of depression have disappeared, and for complete cure a longer time is needed - from 6 months to a year, only then the risk of recurrence of depression can be minimal.

Treatment ends gradually under the supervision of a doctor.

According to the World Health Organization, the risk of a recurrence after the first depressive episode is 50-60%, after the second - 60-70%.

If you or someone close to you suffers from depression, do not waste time and consult a specialist. There is no need to suffer if it is possible to get the necessary and effective help.

Svetlana Ovchinnikova,
psychotherapist-psychoanalyst.

Ways to get out of depression are inherent in ourselves - we just need to be able to activate them, says neuroscientist David Servan-Schreiber. Sometimes this requires the help of a psychotherapist, but we can change the physical activity, nutrition and our environment ourselves.

Standing on the Pont Neuf, I watch the Seine flow between the white stones. On the beach, in the heart of Paris, a man is fishing with his son. The boy has just caught a fish, and his eyes are shining with happiness.

I often think of long walks along this same river with my father when I was that boy's age. My father told me that when he was little, his father, my future grandfather, still bathed in the Seine, even in winter. And he added that now the river is so polluted that it is not only impossible to swim in it, but even there are no fish.

Thirty years later, the fish returned. Maybe it's time to swim again. It was enough to stop polluting the Seine for it to cleanse itself. Rivers are living beings. They, like us, strive for balance, homeostasis. Basically, self-healing. When they are left alone, when they stop throwing waste into them, they are purified.

Like all living things, rivers live in constant interaction with their environment: rain, air, earth, trees, algae, fish and people. And this living exchange creates order, organization, and ultimately cleanliness.

Only stagnant waters are not involved in the exchange and therefore rot. Death is the opposite of life: there is no more interaction with the outside world, and the constant restoration of balance, order, characteristic of life, gives way to chaos and destruction. But as long as the natural forces are active, they are drawn towards balance.

Aristotle believed that any form of life hides in itself a force that he called "entelechy", or self-completion. A seed or an egg contains the power to become a much more complex organism, be it a flower, a tree, a chicken, or a person. This process of self-completion is not only physical - in man it continues with the acquisition of wisdom. Carl Jung and Abraham Maslow made the same observation. The mechanisms of self-healing and self-completion were seen by them as the foundation of life itself.

The treatments I've talked about on previous pages are designed to support the self-completion mechanisms inherent in all living beings, from cells to entire ecosystems, including humans. Precisely because they use the natural forces of the body and contribute to finding harmony, they are very effective and have almost no side effects. Since each of these methods supports the efforts of the brain and body to find harmony in its own way, they have a strong joint action(synergy), and it would be a mistake to choose one of them to the exclusion of all the others. Together, these methods mutually reinforce each other, having the ability to stimulate the activity of the parasympathetic system, which calms and heals the body and soul at a deep level.

In the 1940s, with the advent of antibiotics, medicine changed radically. For the first time, with the help of medical treatment, it was possible to defeat diseases that until then were considered fatal. Pneumonia, syphilis, gangrene receded before simple drugs. Their effectiveness was so high that it led to a revision of the postulates of medicine, which were considered immutable. Communication "doctor - patient", food, behavior of the patient - everything turned out to be unimportant. The patient took his pills, and they helped: even if the doctor did not talk to him, even if the diet was wrong, and even if the patient himself remained completely indifferent to his treatment. It was from this fantastic success of antibiotics in the West that a new approach in practical medicine was born: one that does not take into account either the circumstances of the disease, or the patient's inner vitality, or his ability to heal himself. This mechanical approach has become mainstream in medicine, moving beyond infectious diseases.

To date, almost all medical education is to learn how to diagnose the disease and prescribe the appropriate treatment. This approach works great for acute cases: when you need to operate on appendicitis, prescribe penicillin for pneumonia or cortisone for allergies ... However, when it comes to chronic diseases, this approach only helps to cope with symptoms and exacerbations. As well as we can treat heart attacks and save the patient's life with oxygen, trinitrine and morphine, just as well this treatment of ours does not cope with a disease in which the coronary arteries of the heart are clogged. Not so long ago, it was possible to establish that only cardinal changes in the patient's lifestyle can make this ailment recede. We are talking about stress management, nutrition control, physical activity and so on.

The same is true with depression, which is a chronic disease in the fullest sense of the word. It would be misleading to believe that a single intervention, no matter how good it may be, can for a long time balance the complex set of causes that have supported the disease for many years and even decades. All practitioners and theorists of medicine agree on this. Even the most die-hard supporters of psychoanalysis on the one hand, and the most advanced neuropsychologists on the other, are forced to admit: the best treatment chronic depression, which only classical medicine can offer, combines psychotherapy and drug treatment. This is supported by an impressive multi-university study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

I started with the image of a river that cleanses itself when a person stops polluting it. Similarly, in the treatment of chronic diseases, it is necessary to develop a program that will solve the problem, while simultaneously using various mechanisms of self-healing. It is necessary to create a powerful synergy of different intervention methods that will outstrip the development of the disease. It is in order to create this synergy that I have described the various ways of self-healing in this book. Their combination, adapted to each specific case, is more likely to transform emotional pain and restore vitality.

We have looked at many ways to get to the bottom of emotional being and re-establish coherence. But where to start? The experience gained at the Pittsburgh Complementary Medicine Center has made it possible to develop fairly simple rules for choosing, suitable for each person. Here they are.

  1. First of all, one should learn to control your inner state. Each of us throughout life finds for himself ways of self-comfort that help to overcome difficult moments. Unfortunately, more often we are talking about cigarettes, chocolate, ice cream, beer or whiskey, and even anesthesia with TV programs. These are the most common ways to distract from life's adversities. If we resort to the help of classical medicine, these daily toxins are easily replaced by tranquilizers or antidepressants. And if friends and classmates give us advice instead of a doctor, tranquilizers, as a rule, are replaced by more radical methods of self-comfort: cocaine or heroin.
Obviously, such ineffective and most often toxic effects should be replaced by techniques that use the self-healing capabilities of the emotional brain and allow you to restore harmony between reason, emotions and a sense of self-confidence. In Pittsburgh, we encouraged each patient to discover their ability to cohere in the heart and learn to enter into this state at the slightest stress (or when it is tempting to relax with a less healthy and less effective way to relieve tension).
  2. If possible, Painful past events that continue to evoke feelings in the present should be identified. Most often, patients underestimate the significance of the emotional abscesses that they carry within themselves and which affect their attitude towards life, impoverishing it. Most medical practitioners tend to be oblivious to this, or they don't know how to help patients release bad memories. But usually a few sessions of EMDH (desensitization and processing by eye movement, a modern method of psychotherapy. - Approx. ed.) are enough to get rid of the burden of the past and give rise to a new, more harmonious outlook on life.
  3. Not less important always analyze chronic conflicts in emotional relationships: both in personal life - with parents, spouses, children, brothers and sisters - and at work. These relationships directly affect our emotional ecosystem. By becoming healthier, they will allow you to regain inner balance. And by continuing to regularly pollute the "stream" of our emotional brain, in the long run, they block the mechanisms of self-healing.
Sometimes, simply revisiting past traumas allows emotional relationships to resurface with renewed vigor. By freeing yourself from the ghosts, which, I note, have nothing to do in the present, you can discover a whole new way to connect with other people. When we learn to control our heart coherence, it will be easier for us to manage our emotional relationships. Non-violent communication also allows you to directly and effectively harmonize emotional contacts and find inner balance. We must constantly strive for better emotional communication. If learning these methods from an experienced psychotherapist is not enough, one should get involved in the more complex process of family therapy (when the most important conflicts lie in the sphere of personal life).

  4. Almost everyone will benefit power correction, allowing you to get the required amount fatty acids omega-3, thus delivering the ideal building material for body and brain to recover. Today it is known that the so-called "Cretan" (Mediterranean) diet allows not only to cope with stress and depression, but also to increase heart rate variability. Therefore, everyone should reconsider their diet, preferring fish (or taking omega-3s in the form of dietary supplements) and reducing their consumption of omega-6s.
  5. available to everyone and almost does not require financial investments. As for the time spent, it is enough to practice for twenty minutes three times a week.
  6. It is also within our power to change our way to wake up in the morning. To reset the biological clock, it is enough to replace the alarm clock with a lamp that simulates dawn - the effort is minimal, and the result can be impressive.
  7. Acupuncture On the contrary, it requires time and money investments. I recommend it mainly to those who, in addition to emotional suffering, also have physical problems - mainly pain. In such a situation, needles usually allow you to deal with both problems at the same time (it is very difficult to alleviate depression for someone who is constantly tormented by pain in the body).
  8. And finally, to achieve true inner peace, it is very important to have a deeper understanding of the role we play in society, beyond our family. Those who have managed to find meaning in this, as a rule, are not limited only to achieving peace of mind. There is a feeling that these people discover a source of energy that gives life a new impetus.

Like all French schoolchildren, at the age of sixteen I read Camus' novel "The Outsider". I remember very well the excitement that seized me then. Yes, Camus is right, nothing makes sense. We swim blindly in the river of life, stumble upon strangers who are as confused as we are, arbitrarily choose paths that determine our entire destiny, and ultimately die without having time to understand what we should have done. to another... And if we are lucky, we will be able to maintain the illusion of wholeness, while at least partially realizing the universal absurdity of being. This awareness of the absurdity of existence is our only advantage over animals. Camus is right. There is nothing more to wait.

Today, at forty-one years old, after many years spent at the bedside of men and women of all nationalities, confused and suffering, I again remember the "Outsider", but in a completely different way. It is now absolutely clear to me that Camus' character has lost touch with his emotional brain. He had no inner peace, or he never turned to it: he did not feel sadness or pain at his mother's funeral, he did not feel tenderness in the presence of his wife; he hardly felt anger as he prepared to commit murder. And apparently he had no connection to a society he could cherish (hence the title of the book).

But our emotional brain, the product of millions of years of evolution, just craves these three aspects of life that the Outsider did not have access to: emotions, which are the movements of the soul of our body, harmonious relationships with those who are dear to us, and the feeling that we occupy their place in society. Deprived of them, we look in vain for the meaning of life outside of ourselves, in a world where we have become ... outsiders.

It is the waves of sensation emanating from these sources of life to activate our body and our emotional neurons that give our existence direction and meaning. And we can become healthy only by developing each of them.

Depression is generally not a pleasant state for the person himself and the people around him. But I think it's hard to get out of it. It's good to have family or friends help. At one time, a friend helped me, she dragged me everywhere, shops, walks, a summer residence, and so on. Well, I supplemented it with vitamins.

Of course, first of all, go to the doctor, maybe she will write something useful. Well, if your legs don’t reach there, then you can drink bioadditives for now. It’s just that she herself suffered the same garbage, and for a long time, she drank and fees and herbs, by the way, and I have a cat, so we cuckooed at night with him sitting on the bed. At that time, I bought at the pharmacy the dietary supplement "Tryptophan Calm Formula". Well, I can say that after drinking the course, I said goodbye to insomnia, and the drug "works" even after the end of the intake (apparently, the accumulated effect, like many dietary supplements). I, too, had no particular illusions about dietary supplements, but here we must pay tribute - it works. The sleep became good, plus the anxiety went away, I became more calm. So, try it, it won’t be worse in any case, the composition is natural there.

after childbirth severe depression and I don't know how to get rid of it

I got depressed after the divorce, at first I couldn’t sleep - there was no sleep and that’s it, then self-criticism began (they say, it’s my own fault), then thoughts appeared that everything was over and there would never be joy in life. to the point of thinking about death. As a result, I went to a neurologist, who prescribed mexiprim for a healthy sleep, psychotherapy is a must, moderate sports such as fitness ... and I won’t say that life began to improve, but I began to sleep and thoughts of death were gone.

as I remember, the hardest thing was to force myself to do something: get up, put in order, go to work, and even go to the gym - it was just a feat.

with no help from loved ones. Either “you must be strong”, then “he himself is a goat, it’s right that he left it”. All around accusations of weakness. So terrible... And when I realized that all these "shoulds" drive me even further, I began to allow myself to be weak... the first in our family. I allowed myself to get sick and even go to the doctor, and not courageously bear the cross. And this is where my recovery began.

To avoid depression. you need to think positively and not take all the problems to heart. Otherwise, no health is enough to survive all the depression.
Thanks for the article!

Yeah. Depression is a problem. You need to rest, sleep, eat well and everything will pass.

Such an instructive article. I, an emotional person, often irritate everything and my mood jumps like pressure. So it is useful for me to read such articles.

Of course, this is a painful condition. Depression is a hard thing and to get out of it alone accumulated fatigue can drag you into depression. You need to spit on everything and leave. It was like that for me, to the point of trembling and tears, I couldn’t do anything ...

Of course, this is a painful condition. Depression is hard and hard to get out of it alone. You need to set some goal for yourself, for example, to change the situation for a short time, I’m sure that you haven’t been anywhere for a long time. Be sure to set a goal before leaving to clean your apartment in order to return to a clean house and your condition has not worsened from rest, but on the contrary, set the tone for you. To begin with, decide on what day and what time you can pay attention to this painstaking task. Cleaning hastily "come on, come on!" nothing good can come of it. In a hurry, you can only make a mess, and not order or throw out something you need. If you don't know where to start, then start with SORTING items, take a small area, corner or cabinet or drawer where cleaning is required. At first it will be superficial. rags in one pile, all sorts of paper documents, checks, brochures in another pile, cosmetics in a third, trinkets in a fourth, medicines separately, etc. In a separate bag, put aside what no doubt needs to be thrown away. By the end of the cleaning, expose this bag to the exit. When your husband returns, boast to him that you have finally begun a gradual cleaning. And show at the same time a bag of garbage, I think that it will help to take it out, even if there is a garbage chute. Take pictures (for yourself) of what was "before" and "after" what happened. Don't rush and everything will be fine. It's just that you are stressed at work, and at home you relax. And do not read vile comments here, they are written by narrow-minded, mediocre people, they are "fat meats" as a rule and cannot give practical advice. These are mediocrities who just want to say - you would better soul you need to clean yours!

I had a real, not invented depression, at the age of 30, it looked like this: nothing in life has meaning, life itself has no meaning. I listened to a friend, for example, about the fact that she bought herself a new washing machine, and I myself thought: "why do you need to buy something, everything is pointless, everyone will die someday." I myself am now reading and I understand that words cannot describe my condition correctly until you feel it, it would be good for no one to experience it.

In past years, I thought it was depression and lack of finances. Ha ha, then I found out that it can be worse, and there is no time to suffer from depression, just "I'll think about it tomorrow" (c)

I have three children, the oldest is 4 years old, the middle one is 3 and the youngest is 1. The middle child has autism. Well, to say I'm depressed is an understatement. When the little one was half a year old, she was even afraid to open the windows, as there was a desire to throw herself out. Panic attacks developed from stress. constant sleep deprivation, chronic stress, the eternal lack of money, even the pampas had to be abandoned, it's just tin, at home you have to clean and wash all the time (srach breeds instantly), endless trips to the clinic. There is no place in the apartment where they won't get you. Many thanks to the special kindergarten, where they took the middle daughter, if it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here. So it could be much worse, don't be sad.

Something familiar, I think...

Two, IMHO, ways:
1. Or, as the dachshund advises, lose to the end.
2. Or - this is how I would do it - introduce tough self-discipline. My former boss, an Englishman, in excellent physical shape, over 60, got a big promotion, where the work involves a freak load (two or three business trips a week, long flights). The first thing he did was stop drinking (before that he drank - half a glass, one glass of red), absolutely, completely. And so a healthy diet has tightened up, or something. There are some germinated grains. Lost weight, but energy .... dear mother.

I don't drink at all in the middle of the week now, unless something extraordinary and entertaining happens. Try not to feel sorry for yourself. Boot up. Get tired of physical activity - not because you want to, but because you need to. Healthy simple food. Light dinner and yogurt. Sports, such as running - and try to load the muscles, and not just grimacing in front of the mirror. More water. Yes, you know everything. Otherwise, IMHO, a vicious circle - feel sorry for yourself, drink, eat, swollen and tired in the morning, and all over again. Good luck. Sorry that I write here, and not on soaps.

SW. Sonyukha! My advice: in addition to a good gastroenterologist, you need to contact an endocrinologist: I have a similar situation: from the 7th month of pregnancy I lay in bed, while there was weakness, sweating, a feeling of fear, etc. After childbirth (a month later), the gallbladder was removed, weakness did not stop, there was liquid stool, nausea, a feeling of heat, cold, fear for oneself and all the next of kin (all the time I was afraid that someone would die), in general, what was happening in 2 words cannot be conveyed. although all tests are good. Then I found an endocrinologist, they took tests for thyroid and adrenal hormones, they did an ultrasound, they drank a course of pills to restore the functioning of various organs and things started to get better, now I repeat the course for prevention.

Yes, yes, everything is exactly like that, and anemia, and low blood pressure, and lack of vitality generally. Plus depression, and stress, and all that.
I got it. Thanks to all. And I will definitely sit on vegetables and fruits :)

1. There may be medical problems, the thyroid gland, for example. It would not hurt to go to the doctor, only to the good, not to the district clinic, although with SUCH fatigue, dragging yourself and the doctor to the doctor is stressful.
2. In any case, the diet helps - not quantitative, but qualitative - give up fried, smoked, fatty, buns and sweets for 2 weeks. Eat fresh vegetables, cereals, low-fat dairy products, meat, fish, boiled or baked chicken for pleasure.
3. I will say the terrible word charging. It is better to do yoga exercises for stretching and breathing, 15-20 minutes, not necessarily in the morning, you can do it after work, most importantly, not on a full stomach.
P.p. 2 and 3 personally help me a lot, I’m just starting to fly, but alas, I don’t practice all the time :(

About depression. Interesting on the web. About his own, about a girl's. Discussion of questions about the life of a woman in the family, at work, relationships with men. My beloved noticed me, but I snapped and said that everything was normal. and I don't have the ability to hide my feelings...

Discussion

It's wonderful that you can't understand, so it wasn't with you.
This is when you think all day - it would rather be evening, and then you go to bed, because. you don’t have the strength to do anything, and then you wake up at 3 a.m. and think about life, you think, and two conflicting feelings - the night would soon pass and 6 a.m. wouldn’t come, otherwise you have to get up and go to work.
This is when nothing brings joy, even what was happy a month ago.
This is if no one touches, then he would lie on the couch for days without getting up.
This is when you become unnecessary to yourself and enthusiastically suck on thoughts of suicide.
And this does not last a day, two, a week, but for months ...

P.S. With me it was at the age of 23, so the next crisis of age passed. She left on her own, without doctors and medicines. Then, six months later, I read about this condition in honey. magazine, and what threatens and what needs to be treated. It was 100% recognizable. Now I follow the rules of mental hygiene, and with signs of disorder in my soul, I take measures - they are described below. Sometimes I change my life, sometimes my attitude towards it. It's been 10 years and it hasn't happened again. I guess I had to go through THIS in order to become a different person.

AT biological sense, this is a violation of the chemical processes in the brain, mainly due to stress, although there are also organic disorders, as in manic-depressive psychosis. Depression mainly affects the production of serotonin. Without going into details, I will say that the normal chemical feedback in the brain with depression and other emotional disorders turns into a vicious circle. If you have already experienced depression at least once, then you probably know what the harbingers of this state are, and that when the next attack occurs, the most important thing is not to let yourself slip into it. How is another question.

It’s hard for you, it’s hard for him, but you just talk ... And not blaming each other, but as if listing all the problems and difficulties, but at least write everything down on a piece of paper. So it will be clearer to both what the problem is.
Let your husband read the conf, the answers ... The main thing is to both understand that now is a difficult period for both. Now both of you are no longer living for yourself, but for the third little man. And this must be taken into account. :)
This happens in almost all families, so the family, if you like, is checked for strength.
Good luck!!

Women, even during depression, can go to work and do everyday household chores, while men are practically not capable of this during a period of mental illness.

According to the forecasts of the World Health Organization, by 2020 depression will become the most common disease in the world. Many call it an epidemic of the XXI century, although even Hippocrates described a condition called "melancholy".

To treat this ailment in his time, tincture of opium was prescribed, cleansing enemas, prolonged warm baths and drinking mineral water, as well as primitive psychological support: the patient was recommended to "encourage" and "cheer". 26 centuries have passed since the time of Hippocrates, but the word "depression" in the minds of many Russians is still mythological in nature and is associated with laziness and an overabundance of resources.

What exactly is depression, why does it occur and how to deal with it? These and other questions are answered by Dr. medical sciences Vasily Glebovich Kaleda, psychiatrist, deputy chief physician Science Center mental health Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor of PSTGU.

- Vasily Glebovich, what are the signs of depression and how to recognize it?

(from the Latin deprimo, which means "oppression", "suppression") is a painful condition that is characterized by three main features, the so-called depressive triad. Firstly, this is a sad, sad, melancholy mood (the so-called thymic component of depression), secondly, motor, or motor, lethargy, and finally, ideational lethargy, that is, a slowdown in the pace of thinking and speech.

When we talk about depression, the first thing we think of is a bad mood. But this is not enough! The most important symptom of the disease is the person becomes powerless. Outwardly, his movements are smooth, slow, inhibited, while mental activity is also disturbed. Patients often complain about the loss of the meaning of life, a feeling of some kind of stupefaction, internal slowdown, it becomes difficult for them to formulate thoughts, there is a feeling that the head is empty at all.

Characterized by a decrease in self-esteem, the emergence of a conviction that a person is a complete loser in life, that no one needs him, is a burden to his loved ones. At the same time, patients have sleep disturbance, difficulty falling asleep, often there are early awakenings or the inability to get up in the morning, reduced appetite, and a weakening of sexual desire.

The clinical manifestations of depression are very diverse, so there are quite a lot of its varieties, which outwardly can be very different from each other. But one of the main characteristics of depression is its severity: it is relatively mild - subdepression, depression of moderate severity and severe depression.

If, with a mild degree of the disease, a person retains his ability to work and this mood does not greatly affect his daily life and the sphere of communication, then moderate depression already leads to a breakdown and affects the ability to communicate. With severe depression, a person practically loses both working capacity and social activity. With this form of depression, a person often has suicidal thoughts - both in a passive form, and in the form of suicidal intentions and even suicidal readiness. Patients suffering from this form of depression often attempt suicide.

According to a WHO study, about 90% of all suicides on the planet are committed by patients with various mental disorders, of which about 60% suffered from depression.

With severe depression, a person suffers unbearable mental suffering; in fact, the soul itself suffers, the perception narrows real world, it is difficult - or even impossible for a person - to communicate with his relatives and friends, in this state he may not hear the words of the priest that are addressed to him, often loses the life values that he had before. They already, as a rule, lose their ability to work, because the suffering is very severe.

If we talk about people of faith, then they make suicidal attempts much less often, because they have a life-affirming worldview, there is a sense of responsibility before God for their lives. But it happens that even believing people are not able to endure this suffering and do something irreparable.

From sadness to depression

How to understand when a person is already depressed, and when “just sad”? Especially when it comes to close people, whose condition is objectively extremely difficult to assess?

Speaking of depression, we mean a specific disease that has a number of formalized criteria, and one of the most important is its duration. We can talk about depression when this condition lasts for at least two weeks.

Each person is characterized by a state of sadness, sadness, despondency - these are normal manifestations of human emotions. If some unpleasant, psycho-traumatic event occurs, then normally there is also emotional reaction on him. But if a person has a misfortune, but he is not upset - this is just a pathology.

However, if a person has a reaction to a traumatic event, then normally it should be adequate to the level of the event. Often in our practice we are faced with the fact that a person has a traumatic situation, but his reaction to this situation is inadequate. For example, being fired from a job is unpleasant, but reacting to it with suicide is not normal. In such cases, we are talking about psychogenic-provoked depression, and this condition needs medical, medication and psychotherapeutic support.

In any case, when a person has this long-term condition with a sad, sad, depressed mood, loss of strength, problems in understanding, loss of the meaning of life, lack of prospects in it - these are the symptoms when you need to see a doctor.

Depression for no reason

It is important to understand that in addition to reactive depression, which occurs as a reaction to some kind of traumatic situation, there are also so-called endogenous depressions, the causes of which are purely biological, associated with certain metabolic disorders. I had to treat people who are no longer there, and who can be called ascetics of the 20th century. And they also had depression!

Some of them had endogenous depressions that arose without any visible, understandable reason. This depression was characterized by some kind of sad, sad, depressed mood, loss of strength. And this condition went very well with drug therapy.

- That is, believers are also not immune from depression?

Unfortunately no. They are not immune from both endogenous depression and psychogenic-provoked depression. It must be borne in mind that each person has his own special level of stress resistance, depending on his character, personality traits and, of course, worldview. One of the greatest psychiatrists of the 20th century, Viktor Frankl, said: “Religion gives a person a spiritual anchor of salvation with a sense of self-confidence that he cannot find anywhere else.”

"Christian" depression

When we talk about people who believe, in addition to the above symptoms associated with mood and lethargy, there is a feeling of God-forsakenness. Such people will say that it is difficult for them to concentrate on prayer, they have lost their sense of grace, they feel on the verge of spiritual death, that they have a cold heart, a petrified insensibility. They can even talk about some special sinfulness and loss of faith. And that feeling of repentance, the degree of their repentance for their sinfulness will not correspond to the real spiritual life, that is, the real misconduct that such people have.

Repentance, the sacraments of Confession and Communion - these are the things that strengthen a person, instill new strength, new hopes. A depressed person comes to a priest, repents of his sins, takes communion, but he does not experience this joy of starting a new life, the joy of meeting the Lord. And for believers, this is one of the main criteria for the presence of a depressive disorder.

They are not lazy

Another important complaint of a person suffering from depression is that he does not want to do anything. This is the so-called apathy, the loss of desire to do something, the loss of the meaning to do something. At the same time, people often complain about the lack of strength, fatigue- both in physical and mental work. And often people around perceive it as if a person is lazy. They tell him: "Pull yourself together, force yourself to do something."

When such symptoms appear in adolescence, the relatives surrounding them, harsh fathers sometimes try to influence them physically and force them to do something, not realizing that the child, the young man, is simply in a painful state.

Here it is worth emphasizing one important point: when we talk about depression, we are talking about the fact that this is a painful condition that arose at a certain moment and caused certain changes in a person’s behavior. We all have personality traits, and they tend to accompany us throughout our lives.

It is clear that with age a person changes, some character traits change. But here is the situation: before, everything was fine with a person, he was cheerful and sociable, was active, studied successfully, and suddenly something happened to him, something happened, and now he looks somehow sad, sad and sad, and there seems to be no reason for sadness - here there is a reason to suspect depression.

Not so long ago, the peak of depression was between 30 and 40 years old, but today depression has dramatically “younger”, and people under 25 often get sick with it.

Among the varieties of depression, the so-called depression with "youthful asthenic failure" is distinguished, when it is the manifestations of the decline of intellectual, mental strength that come to the fore, when a person loses the ability to think.

This is especially noticeable among students, especially when a person successfully studies at an institute, has completed one course, a second, a third, and then there comes a moment when he looks at a book and cannot understand anything. He reads the material, but he cannot master it. He tries to read it again, but again he cannot understand anything. Then, at some stage, he drops all his textbooks and starts walking.

Relatives can't figure out what's going on. They try to influence him in some way, and this condition is painful. At the same time, there are interesting cases, for example, “depression without depression”, when the mood is normal, but at the same time the person is motorally inhibited, he cannot do anything, he has no physical strength, no desire to do anything, his intellectual abilities disappeared somewhere.

Is fasting depression a reality?

If one of the signs of depression is the loss of the physical ability to work, to think, then how safe is it for mental workers to fast? Can a man, working for a responsible leadership position, feel good eating porridge or carrots? Or, for example, a woman accountant who has just the reporting period during Lent, and no one has canceled household duties? To what extent can such situations cause stress, lead an organism weakened after winter to depression?

First, the time of fasting is not the time of hunger strike. Be that as it may, lean foods contain enough necessary for the body substances. One can cite as an example a large number of people who strictly observed the fast and at the same time fulfilled the serious duties assigned to them.

I remember Metropolitan John of Yaroslavl and Rostov (Wendland), who, of course, led an entire diocese, a metropolis, who had a unique dish during Lent - semolina porridge on potato broth. Not everyone who tried this lean food was ready to eat it.

My dad, (Kaleda - ed.), always, as far as I remember, strictly fasted, and combined fasting with serious scientific and administrative work, and at one time he had to drive one and a half to two hours one way to his place of work. There was quite a serious physical load, but he coped with it.

It has become much easier to fast now than it was 30 years ago. Now you can go to any supermarket, and there will be a huge selection of dishes marked “Lenten product”. AT recent times seafood appeared that we did not know before, a large number of frozen and fresh vegetables. Previously, in childhood, relatively speaking, we only knew at the time sauerkraut, pickles, potatoes. That is, the current variety of products was not.

I repeat: fasting is not a time of starvation and not a time when a person simply follows a certain diet. If fasting is perceived only as observing a certain diet, then this is not fasting, but only unloading diet, which, however, can also be quite useful.

Fasting has other purposes - spiritual ones. And probably, here each person, together with his confessor, must determine the measure of fasting that he can really endure. People may be spiritually weak or, due to various reasons and circumstances, begin to fast very strictly, and by the end of the fast, all their physical and psychic powers but instead of joy Christ's Resurrection- fatigue and irritability. Probably, in such cases it is better to discuss this with the confessor and, perhaps, get a blessing for some weakening of the fast.

If we talk about us, about people who work, then in any case, lean food differs from ordinary food in that it is more “labor-intensive”. In particular, with regard to cooking - it needs to be cooked longer and more in quantity. Not every person at work has a buffet where lean food is offered, or at least close to lean. In this case, a person must somehow understand what fast he can endure and what his personal fast will consist of.

My dad once gave an example - his spiritual daughter came to him (it was the beginning of the nineties or the end of the eighties). She lived with unbelieving parents, and it was very difficult for her to fast at home, causing constant conflicts with her parents, tension in the family situation.

It is clear that because of these conflicts, a person approached the bright holiday of Easter not at all in a festive mood. And dad told her as an obedience to eat absolutely everything that her parents prepare at home. Just can't watch TV. As a result, after Easter, she said that it was the hardest post in her life.

Probably, those people who, due to some circumstances, find it difficult to fully observe the fast in relation to food - and all of us - need to set some individual goals during the fast. Everyone knows their weaknesses and can impose some feasible restrictions on themselves. This will be a real fast, which has primarily spiritual goals, and not just abstaining from food, a diet.

You and I must always remember that Orthodoxy is the joyful fullness of life in Christ. A person by nature consists of three parts: spirit, soul and body, and we must strive to ensure that our life is full and harmonious, but at the same time the spirit must dominate. Only when spiritual life dominates in a person is he truly mentally healthy.

Interviewed by Lika Sideleva

Recognizing the signs of depression can help save your loved one. This mental disorder is very dangerous.

Today I want to teach you how to identify the symptoms of a real epidemic of the twentieth century, from which every second adult inhabitant of our planet has suffered or is suffering to a greater or lesser extent.

Signs of depression you need to see in order to be able to save a person close to you in time, because this mental disorder is very, very dangerous.

Where does depression and its symptoms come from?

Many people mistakenly believe that depression is a modern disease, which appeared either because of the difficult life of today, or because people with fat are mad.

Like, in our time this was not the case.

I hasten to upset you: it was.

Depression, as a mental illness, has been known since antiquity, it just used to be called “melancholy”.

Before talking about signs of depression, it is worth dwelling on the causes that cause such a dangerous disease.

Very rarely, but it happens that depression arises just like that from a violation of the metabolism of neurotransmitters.

That's all in a person's life safely, he did not experience any special cataclysms, but a mental disorder took and appeared out of the blue.

For the most part, depression is caused by quite simple and understandable reasons:

  • peer pressure;
  • the inability to achieve the desired for a long period;
  • failures in personal life or career;
  • disease;
  • loneliness and so on.

If you understand that a black streak has come in your life, then try to mobilize all your strength so as not to become a victim of depression.

Relax, focus, even on small, but still joys, fight difficulties, and do not give in to them.

Why is it dangerous to ignore the signs of depression?

Depression is indeed a common disease, and given that stress or bad mood are often mistaken for this disease, the picture emerges very, very bleak.

Usually, the reaction of friends and relatives of people suffering from depression is divided into three types:

  • those who begin to run around the patient (often imaginary), like a mother hen;
  • those who simply ignore it;
  • those who get angry because of his bad mood and call in an aggressive tone to “shake yourself up”, “do not turn sour”, “do not fill your head with nonsense”, etc.

Not right and one, and the second, and the third. The first ones feed the manipulators and shape the weaklings. And the second and third often, with their egoism and indifference, bring a sick person to suicide.

Yes, you heard right, this is how many people suffering from manic depression end up.

Once, on one of the psychological forums, I read the story of unfortunate parents.

Their teenage daughter suffered from an unrequited first love.

They, instead of extending a helping hand to her, only yelled: “Better think about grades! There will be more such loves in your life!

Turns out it won't.

A child driven to manic depression committed suicide.

Parents who failed to save their daughter are trying to warn other moms and dads against mistakes.

15 main signs of depression

As you can see, depression is very dangerous.

And even more dangerous is that non-specialists cannot diagnose it, so often the condition of a loved one is attributed to a bad mood or temporary difficulties.

And even those suffering from depression themselves do not always understand that they are sick and require help.

According to psychologists, the 15 main signs of depression look like this:

  1. Man complains about constant fatigue , to something that cannot restore strength either overnight or over the weekend.
  2. You just talked about something and suddenly the person completely turns off, stops responding to comments, and then cannot remember what it was all about.

The desire to hide from people, voluntary imprisonment within four walls.

Especially, you need to be wary if a sociable, cheerful person who used to have many friends begins to behave this way.

  3. Established bad habits: alcohol, cigarettes, drugs.
  4. Concentration on negative life moments.

Even if something good happens, the depressed person perceives it without much enthusiasm, as an accident.

But he is ready to talk about troubles all the time.

Unwillingness to take care of their appearance.

Indifference to the condition of their clothes and shoes.

A person may stop washing, so an unpleasant smell will begin to accompany him.

Loss of the ability to experience any feelings: compassion, pain, joy, surprise, delight, etc.

My teacher told me that the mother of one of her patients diagnosed depression in her daughter (and she was absolutely right) when they witnessed the tragedy (the car ran over the dog), and the girl did not even react.

Watch also an informative video about what depression is

and how to diagnose it:

If you find yourself or a loved one signs of depression(I repeat, depression, not bad mood), then you should not try to fight them yourself.

This disease is not so easy to overcome without outside help.
