Surgical treatment of urinary incontinence

Almost every woman is familiar with the problem of urinary incontinence directly or through complaints from others. Urinary incontinence surgery is a reliable way to improve the quality of life and get rid of discomfort. Methods of such operations have been developed and improved for many years. But is surgical treatment of urinary incontinence always appropriate? What types of such treatment exist and what is their effectiveness?

Unstarted stages of enuresis can be eliminated without cardinal methods.

Non-invasive methods

Traditionally, surgical intervention is resorted to in cases where other methods of treatment cannot help. The approach also works in the treatment of urinary incontinence. In the view of many women, “old-fashioned” methods are used to correct their problem, and urinary incontinence after surgery can only intensify. But in the event that an acute problem arose due to poor-quality work of muscle tissue, before lying down on the surgeon's table, it is necessary to turn to Kegel exercises. The world-famous complex in a short time increases the tone of weakened muscles, including those in the bladder. For the “lazy”, electrical stimulators are used for the same purpose, which work for the benefit of health while the body is resting. With hormonal failures that led to urinary incontinence, drug treatment is indicated. Up to 30 percent of patients are cured without surgery, but what awaits the rest?

Effectiveness of surgical treatment for urinary incontinence

Modern practical medicine has made a huge breakthrough in treating the problem of every third woman on the planet - women's surgeries are performed using minimally invasive techniques, do not require long-term recovery and are highly effective both immediately and in the future. However, the qualification of the surgeon and the correct choice of treatment method are important.

Operation types

Invasive techniques include up to 300 different types. Only a qualified and comprehensive assessment of the totality of factors will make it possible to correctly determine the further treatment. The choice will be influenced by:

  • the nature and cause of the disease;
  • age, previous and chronic diseases;
  • the possibility of using general anesthesia and laparoscopic access;
  • other features of the body.

The use of slings

It is permissible to physically adjust the functioning of the bladder by introducing slings.

Everything ingenious is simple, as in this operation. A loop-shaped synthetic mesh is implanted under the bladder to support the urethra and prevent incontinence. The material of such a mesh is not rejected by the body; over time, living tissues surround it and create a reliable bed for organs. The intervention does not require general anesthesia and lasts 30 minutes. The incisions are delicate and cannot spoil the appearance of the body.

The advantages include a short rehabilitation period - discharge from a medical institution occurs, as a rule, on the same day, and a return to a full life in about a month. More than 90 percent of women who underwent surgery confirm by their own example that 30 minutes on the surgical table will allow them to forget about an unpleasant problem for the rest of their lives.

Colporrhaphy

If the use of slings is an innovative method, then anterior colporrhaphy is rather a relic of the past. Such an intervention will become the embodiment of nightmares passed down by women from generation to generation. It is necessarily carried out under general anesthesia, while the muscles surrounding the vagina and urinary organs are tightened. It will take a long time to recover from such a traumatic intervention.

The consequence will certainly be scarring of the tissues, which will further complicate the correction of the results of the operation. And a correction will be needed, since the effect does not last long - after 3 years, only 25 percent of the women who underwent the operation are still satisfied with their well-being. Such an intervention will be justified if the sling method cannot be used (pregnancy is planned) or is ineffective.
