Enuresis in women and men

Enuresis in adults, or urinary incontinence, is a rather delicate problem that causes great discomfort. This problem is associated with discomfort not only from the physiological state, it is difficult for the patient to adapt in society, often there are problems with others and psychological disorders.

Few people are pleased to talk about this problem at all, yet the treatment of enuresis in adults is the task of a qualified specialist. Usually, the pathological process is considered by doctors not as a separate disease, but as a result of some other disorders. In general, you may need to consult various specialists: a psychologist, a neurologist, a nephrologist, a urologist, etc.

Varieties of the disease

Enuresis in adult men can be of several types:

  • stress urinary incontinence. Any physical activity or emotional outburst can cause involuntary urination. Sneezing, coughing, running, jumping, laughing - all this and more can serve as a catalyst for an unpleasant symptom. The very principle of the development of incontinence is due to the fact that an increase in intra-abdominal pressure leads to an increase in intravesical pressure, but at the same time, a person does not have a direct urge to urinate;
  • urgent type. In this case, there is an urge to urinate, but there is a very small interval between it and urine leakage. A person simply does not have time to run to the restroom;
  • mixed look . This is a combination of the two previous varieties. It most often occurs in older women.

In general, the number of urination depends on the amount of fluid you drink. If we talk about the night time of the day, then a person should not wake up from the desire to urinate. This is due to the fact that the kidneys responsible for the production of urine are at rest.

What causes the problem to develop?

The causes of enuresis in adults can be the following:

  • inflammatory processes of the reproductive system;
  • emotional overstrain, stressful conditions, physical overwork;
  • overactive bladder. In this case, a person may also have a natural urge to urinate, and at the same time, at some moments, he may involuntarily urinate;
  • disorders of the spinal cord or spinal column;
  • anatomical features of the genital organs;
  • neoplasms of the bladder;
  • surgical intervention on the prostate gland;
  • after taking alcohol in large doses;
  • taking certain medications;
  • in children, this may be due to the fact that they still cannot properly control their reflexes;
  • in girls, this problem may be associated with psychological disorders: moving, divorce of parents, transfer to another school, etc.;
  • gynecological problems in women and prostate disorders in men.

Psychological causes of enuresis

Along with the main treatment of the disease, often experts prescribe a consultation with a psychotherapist. Why? It should be understood that the work of our brain and the activity of internal organs is one big mechanism. Often, if there is a physiological problem, then there are violations in psychosomatics.

A healthy person urinates about five to six times a day.

Psychological therapy is associated not only with the identification of the true causes of the disease. It also consists in adapting to life in the conditions of this problem. Such patients may develop complexes and even depression may begin. A person may have phobias of a different nature, with which a specialist will have to deal with.

Separately, I would like to say about the alcohol factor. As you know, alcoholic beverages inhibit the work of the central nervous system, which means that it is already much more difficult to control the bladder. If we talk directly about alcoholism, then the constant poisoning of the body leads to a violation of the functions of the brain, in particular, the production of antidiuretic hormone is disrupted. These factors create favorable conditions for the development of the pathological process.

Night diuresis

The causes of nocturnal diuresis can be varied. Symptoms associated with nocturnal diuresis may precede serious urological disorders, so they should be monitored.

Nocturnal diuresis can be inherited

Despite the fact that enuresis is not a genetic disease, the pathology can be transmitted from parents to children. As statistics show, if both parents had a problem, then the probability of an ailment in a child is about eighty percent. If only one parent suffers, then the risks of developing the disease are approximately forty percent.

The antidiuretic hormone in our body prevents urine from being produced at night, so that a person does not need to urinate at night. If this hormone is not produced enough by the body, then a problem arises. Some drugs for insomnia, as well as those used in psychiatric practice, can lead to nocturnal diuresis as a side effect.

Primary nocturnal enuresis in adults is usually the result of disorders of the urethra. If we talk about a secondary problem in an adult, then it can be a symptom of serious disorders in the body, namely:

  • diabetes;
  • stones or urinary tract infections;
  • neurological disorders;
  • cancer of the prostate or bladder;
  • prostate enlargement;
  • anatomical features.

Two methods are used to treat enuresis in adults:

  • pharmacological therapy. Nevertheless, many pills are aimed at alleviating clinical symptoms, but they do not eliminate the very cause of the disease. That is why at the end of the treatment course, the disease can recur again. The attending physician should select the medicine;
  • surgical intervention. This is an extreme measure, which is used when other methods are ineffective.

Male enuresis is more common than female

Help at home can include:

  • mattress covers. You can purchase waterproof covers or screen protectors that make cleaning easier;
  • absorbent swimwear. This development helps prevent involuntary urination. Such swimming trunks are suitable even for people with sensitive skin;
  • skin care products: soaps, lotions, cleansing wipes. They help relieve irritation.

Enuresis treatment

How to treat enuresis in adults? The treatment process includes a whole range of activities. You should not self-medicate. A qualified specialist will be able to conduct a differential diagnosis and prescribe the correct treatment.

In the treatment of the disease, the following medicines are used:

  • antibacterial agents are used if the cause of urinary incontinence is an inflammatory process in the urinary system;
  • tranquilizers for normal sleep. This group of medicines calms the nervous system well, helps to tune in to positive emotions;
  • nootropics improve the functioning of the nervous system and contribute to the development of a conditioned reflex;
  • antidepressants are needed for psychogenic incontinence;
  • M-cholinolytics relieve spasm of the bladder;
  • The artificial hormone desmopressin prevents the production of urine at night.

Is it possible to cure the disease with folk remedies?

Traditional medicine as a means of struggle

Consider the popular non-traditional methods:

  • honey calms the nervous system well and helps retain water in the body. Before going to bed, a spoonful of honey is eaten, you can drink two sips of water;
  • decoction of dill. Dill seeds are first fried in a pan, then two tablespoons of raw materials are poured with half a liter of boiling water and allowed to brew for four hours. The remedy is drunk for two weeks, twice a day, one glass;
  • corn tea. You will need corn silk. It is enough to take a teaspoon of the product for a glass of boiling water. The tool should be infused for half an hour. Next, a small amount of honey is added there. It is necessary to take a decoction on an empty stomach for a month. The effect will be felt gradually.

Honey is an excellent folk remedy for urinary incontinence.

So, enuresis is a rather unpleasant and delicate problem that can occur both in childhood and in adults. There can be a lot of reasons, and not always they are due to physiological processes. Even psychological problems can be the culprit. Treatment should be carried out under the supervision of a specialist. Self-activity will only take precious time and can lead to serious complications.
