Benzocaine ointment is a local drug used in the symptomatic treatment of diseases accompanied by pain. The drug has contraindications, so it should be used as prescribed by a doctor.

What is benzocaine?

(in Latin - benzocaine) - a substance that has an analgesic effect. It is a white crystalline substance with a bitter taste. Benzocaine is soluble in water, ethyl alcohol, ether, chloroform and oils.

Medicinal properties

The active substance has the following properties:

  • reduces the permeability of the cell membrane, preventing the leakage of sodium ions;
  • removes calcium ions from receptors located inside the cell membrane;
  • inhibits the formation and movement of nerve impulses.

When used locally, the substance is practically not absorbed into the systemic circulation. The therapeutic effect occurs 1 minute after application and lasts 15-20 minutes.

What preparations include the substance?

The specified active substance contains the following medicines:

  • Anestezin;
  • Relief Advance;
  • Dentispray.

Indications for use of Benzocaine ointment

Ointment is used for:

  • severe inflammation of the middle part of the auditory canal;
  • pain in the external auditory canal;
  • skin diseases accompanied by pain and itching (urticaria, labial and genital herpes, shingles)
  • painful teething in children;
  • ulcerative and herpetic stomatitis;
  • fungal infections of the mucous membranes of the oral cavity;
  • performing diagnostic procedures (endoscopic examination of the esophagus, stomach, ear canal, urethra, vagina and rectum).

With hemorrhoids

Anestezol ointment, the active ingredient of which is benzocaine, is used when accompanied by:

  • inflammation of the hemorrhoidal veins;
  • infringement of nodes;
  • irritation of the skin of the perianal region;
  • the formation of anal fissures;
  • inflammation of the mucous membranes of the rectum.

Application

Dental ointment is applied in a thin layer on the inflamed areas of the gums, rubbing with light massaging movements. The drug is used 3-4 times a day. Ointment for hemorrhoids based on benzocaine is applied in the morning and evening after performing hygiene procedures.

Contraindications to the use of Benzocaine ointment

The drug is contraindicated in case of individual intolerance to the active substance and auxiliary components.

Side effects of Benzocaine ointment

When using ointments based on benzocaine, the following undesirable consequences occur:

  • contact dermatitis, manifested by itchy skin rashes;
  • allergic reactions (erythematous rashes, burning and redness of the skin and mucous membranes, urticaria, swelling of soft tissues);
  • persistent numbness of soft tissues at the site of application of the ointment;
  • methemoglobinemia (when using the drug in children under 7 years of age).

Overdose

When applying the drug to large areas of the skin, there are:

  • dizziness;
  • breathing problems;
  • impaired coordination of movements;
  • cyanosis of the skin.

Substances that neutralize the effect of benzocaine have not been found. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.

special instructions

In some cases, caution or refusal to use the ointment is required.

During pregnancy and lactation

It is not known how the drug can affect the development of the fetus, so it is rarely prescribed to pregnant women. Despite the fact that a small amount of the active substance is excreted in breast milk, it is not recommended to use the ointment during lactation.

Local anesthetics selectively block the process of excitation transmission in the afferent nerves and their endings, causing a loss of pain sensitivity at the site of their injection. There are different types of local anesthesia:

Superficial (terminal) anesthesia - occurs when anesthetics are applied to the surface of the skin, mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, etc .;

Conduction anesthesia - occurs when an anesthetic is injected into or near a nerve, as a result of which pain sensitivity is lost in the area innervated by this nerve; with spinal anesthesia, the anesthetic solution is injected directly into the subdural space (in the lumbar region), while the pain sensitivity of the lower half of the trunk and lower extremities is lost;

Infiltration anesthesia, in which the tissues of any part of the body are impregnated with an anesthetic in layers;

Intraosseous anesthesia is achieved by introducing an anesthetic into the cancellous bone with a tourniquet applied above the injection site of the anesthetic.

For each type of anesthesia choose a local anesthetic, taking into account its characteristics; to prolong the effect, a 0.1% solution of adrenaline is added (1 drop per 2-3 ml of a local anesthetic solution, but not more than 20 drops per entire dose of the solution administered to the patient).

COCAINE- In medical practice, cocaine hydrochloride is used for surface anesthesia. Cocaine hydrochloride is used in ophthalmic practice 1-3% solutions; for anesthesia of the mucous membranes of the larynx, nose, oral cavity - 2-5% solutions. Cocaine constricts blood vessels, dilates the pupil when instilled into the eye, and can increase intraocular pressure. When absorbed into the blood, cocaine excites the central nervous system, causes a state of euphoria, which is the cause of drug dependence (cocainism) and limits its use in medical practice. Side effects of cocaine hydrochloride: increases intraocular pressure, exacerbates glaucoma attacks. Release form cocaine hydrochloride: powder List A.
