Be that as it may, in any case, it is convenient for both doctors and parents when one vaccination immediately provides protection against two dangerous infections. Accordingly, the reaction of a small organism to a vaccination will have to be experienced only once instead of two.

Consider below where the diphtheria and tetanus vaccine is given.

Vaccination and its features

Doctors are required to inform parents in advance when they should be vaccinated against diphtheria, as well as the rules for preparing for it. It is carried out according to the generally accepted vaccination schedule:

  • at three months of age;
  • at four and a half months;
  • at the age of six months;
  • at one and a half years;
  • vaccinated against diphtheria and tetanus at age 7.

The required immunity of the body to the disease, as a rule, is formed only after the introduction of three vaccines. They should be placed at a certain interval of thirty to forty days. But in order to maintain the immune system, children are given two more subsequent auxiliary vaccinations against diphtheria, allowing them to maintain immunity to this infection for ten years. Therefore, revaccination after this measure will be required only at the age of sixteen years.

Where do they do it?

Another issue that concerns parents before carrying out this procedure is the interest in where children are vaccinated against diphtheria and tetanus. For these purposes, a muscle is needed, so experts recommend injecting a child under the shoulder blade. Where do they get the diphtheria vaccine at 14? This is a common question, but with age, the injection site does not change. It can also be done in the thigh, where the skin is thinner, which means the vaccine can reach its final goal more quickly.

Where are adults vaccinated against diphtheria? All vaccines containing diphtheria toxoid (ADS, DTP, ADS-M, AD-M, AD) are administered intramuscularly in the buttock (upper outer quadrant) or anterolateral part of the thigh. Deep subcutaneous injection into the subscapular region is also given to adults.

Now it is clear where the diphtheria vaccine is given.

Is consent worth it?

Despite the general usefulness, as well as the maximum effectiveness of this vaccination and the availability of information about it, many parents still doubt whether it is worth giving their consent to such a procedure. Nevertheless, the number of refusals from this vaccination does not decrease every year, but only grows.

"Pros and cons"

Parents of children before the vaccination procedure are often interested in whether it is generally mandatory or whether it can be waived. On the one hand, no one will force anyone to do it, so you can write a refusal, after which the injection will not be given to the baby. But at the same time, doctors are obliged to explain in detail to parents all the possible consequences of this decision. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind exactly what the benefits of the diphtheria vaccine are. And the advantages in this case are the following:

It should be noted that the list of professional areas that require vaccination against diphtheria and tetanus (where they make adults, we clarified) is quite impressive:

  • agricultural work;
  • building sector;
  • hydroreclamation and harvesting works;
  • geological, commercial, prospecting and forwarding industries;
  • veterinary and animal care;
  • service in the field of sewerage facilities;
  • medical and educational positions.

Therefore, in the event that parents want to see their child as a doctor or teacher in the future, it would be better to immediately agree to the vaccination, otherwise many doors will simply close in front of him.

What scares parents?

Yet why is the diphtheria vaccine so scary for parents? What forces them to refuse such a saving and at first glance, it would seem, a useful injection? Most likely, they are alarmed by the list of complications that can occur after it is carried out. True, they develop only in situations where any contraindications are not observed. As a rule, they are detected in children before they are given a vaccine.

Contraindications

One of the main advantages of this vaccination is the presence of a minimum number of contraindications. Vaccination is not carried out at all if the baby has intolerance to the components of the injected substance. In other situations, doctors can only postpone the vaccination. These situations are usually:

  • acute course of any disease;
  • the presence of high temperature;
  • when taking potent drugs;
  • the patient has eczema;
  • with diathesis in a child.

If individual intolerance or the above factors are not detected in time, then, of course, one can be afraid of the appearance of any side effects after vaccination against diphtheria. In all other situations, the reaction of the child's body to such vaccination does not go beyond the normal range.

What is the child's reaction to the vaccine?

Parents need to know how their child should respond to the diphtheria vaccine. This is important in order not to worry in vain. Despite the fact that the symptoms of a vaccination reaction can be unpleasant, they pass quickly and without a trace and do not affect the general health of the child. These symptoms most often include the following:

Main nuances

In order for the reactions after the vaccination to be normal, you need to know a few basic nuances for caring for the puncture site. For example, many parents are interested in how long they should not wash their child after vaccination against tetanus and diphtheria. But it should be noted that there are absolutely no contraindications to water procedures after this vaccination.

The only recommendation is that it is not advisable to bathe the child in too hot water with foam. It is impossible for the baby to bathe in a bath with salt, otherwise it may cause skin irritation in the injection area. In addition, you should not use a washcloth for a week. Otherwise, there are no other restrictions. Therefore, parents should not be afraid to give their consent to vaccination against diphtheria. In addition, these or other complications occur after it is extremely rare.

Possible Complications

Any consequences of vaccination against diphtheria can hardly be called complications, because, first of all, they are extremely rare, and also do not bring significant harm to the health of the child. However, possible complications include the following symptoms:

  • the appearance of diarrhea;
  • development of profuse sweating;
  • the occurrence of itching along with dermatitis;
  • the appearance of cough and runny nose;
  • the appearance of otitis and pharyngitis, as well as bronchitis.

Why do parents still refuse to be vaccinated?

All of these diseases can be cured in a short time. In the role of side effects after this vaccination, these symptoms are extremely rare. Experts do not understand the motives of parents who refuse to perform this vaccination. For all the time, neither anaphylactic shock nor deaths after injection of ADS have yet been observed. At the same time, the effectiveness, along with the benefits of this vaccination, has been repeatedly confirmed in practice.

In any case, before making such a responsible decision, parents are definitely advised to talk with a pediatrician to find out all about the advantages and disadvantages of the diphtheria vaccine. Only after such a consultation will it be possible to draw the right conclusions, on which not only health, but also the subsequent professional life of the baby will depend. Where the diphtheria vaccine is given, you can check with your doctor.

Where is immunization carried out?

The diphtheria vaccine is currently available at any of the public clinics. In addition, it is performed in special vaccination centers, as well as in various departments of hospitals.

In the event that a child, according to estimated forecasts, may develop an allergic reaction, then it would be best to deliver the vaccine in a hospital setting. In all other situations, vaccination can also be performed on an outpatient basis, for example, in a clinic or vaccination center. Where do we explained above.

Public institutions provide medical preparations for vaccination, which are purchased from the budget and are free for patients. As for the vaccination centers, they can deliver such a vaccination using an imported injection, which will turn out to be much more expensive.

If you wish, you can purchase the required drug at a pharmacy, and then contact the vaccination room of your clinic for a medical specialist to perform an intramuscular injection. In the event that a person buys a vaccine at a pharmacy on his own, he needs to take care in advance of the proper conditions for its transportation, as well as the storage of the drug.

We have considered the question of where the diphtheria vaccination is given.

Diphtheria is a dangerous infectious disease, which is especially susceptible to residents of Russia. It causes many serious irreversible consequences in both children and adults. Parents who vaccinate their children rush to vaccinate against diphtheria, protecting the child from the disease.

After the introduction of the diphtheria vaccine into the child's body, antitoxic antibodies begin to be produced in it, which are substances that protect the baby from the toxins produced by the diphtheria bacillus. The diphtheria vaccine is part of such vaccine preparations as ADS, ADS-M, DTP, Tetracoc, Pentaxim, Infanrix. DPT in its composition also contains a vaccine against whooping cough and tetanus, protecting the child's body from three dangerous diseases at the same time.

The composition of the diphtheria vaccine in children and at what age are vaccinated

Vaccination against diphtheria for children is carried out using such diphtheria toxoids, which are registered in Russia:

1. ADS - diphtheria-tetanus toxoid. It is administered to children under the age of 6 years at a dosage of 0.5 ml.

2. ADS-M - diphtheria-tetanus toxoid. It is used for vaccination of children over 6 years of age and adults, 0.5 ml is administered.

3. AD-M - diphtheria toxoid. 0.5 ml is administered to children over 6 years of age.

The DTP vaccine is used to immunize children from 3 months to 6 years of age who have contraindications to the DPT vaccine or those who have already had whooping cough. The course is two doses, the interval between the terms of vaccination against diphtheria is 30-45 days. Revaccination with ADS vaccine is carried out once 9-12 months after the second dose of the drug. Children who have reached the age of 6 are revaccinated with the ADS-M vaccine.

Revaccination: vaccination for a child at 7 and 14 years old

The ADS-M vaccine is used for revaccination of children at 7, 14 years old and adults every 10 years. This vaccine is also used to immunize children over 6 years of age who have never been vaccinated against diphtheria before.

A child at the age of 7 is vaccinated against diphtheria with the help of the DTP or ATP vaccine, ATP-M is used at this age only for revaccination or is administered to those children who have not previously been vaccinated against this infection.

According to the national calendar, vaccination against diphtheria at the age of 14 is not carried out, only revaccination is carried out.

Vaccination of children against diphtheria: the frequency of vaccinations

Vaccination against diphtheria for children of early and preschool age is carried out intramuscularly, upon reaching the age of 6, the vaccine can be administered in another way - deep subcutaneously.

When is the diphtheria vaccination given to children according to the national calendar? The first dose is administered to the baby at the age of three months, the second - at 4.5 months, the third - at six months, the fourth - at one and a half, the fifth - at 6-7 years. Full-fledged strong immunity in children is developed after the introduction of three doses of the vaccine. The frequency of diphtheria vaccinations for the first three times should be 30-40 days. In order to develop the immunity of the child's body to diphtheria, it is necessary to make two more auxiliary vaccinations - at one and a half years and at 6-7 years, they will allow maintaining protective properties for 10 years. Revaccination is carried out only after 10 years, at the age of 16–17 years of age.

Another common question asked by parents to specialists is where children are vaccinated against diphtheria. The drug is injected into the muscle, the area under the shoulder blade or thigh is best suited for injection. In these places, the skin is thin, so the drug will quickly reach its final goal.

All children who are not yet three years old, the diphtheria vaccine is injected into the anterolateral surface of the thigh. After three years, the vaccination is done in the shoulder, strictly on the side. The diphtheria vaccine contains a large amount of aluminum hydroxide, which helps to increase immunity.

Do children who have recovered from diphtheria need a vaccination against diphtheria?

Do children who have already been ill with this infectious disease need a vaccination against diphtheria? The disease of diphtheria is regarded as the first vaccination, for those who were infected after the first vaccination, the disease is regarded as the second vaccination. After suffering diphtheria, vaccination is carried out further according to the national vaccination schedule.

Most parents every time before the next vaccination of their baby doubt whether it is necessary to be vaccinated. At their discretion, parents can write a refusal to immunize in this way, but first you should familiarize yourself with the benefits of vaccination and the possible risks in case of its absence. The diphtheria vaccine has the following advantages:

  • the risk of infection is minimized;
  • if the child gets sick, he will suffer the disease in a mild form without complications;
  • if all the rules of immunization are observed, the occurrence of side effects is minimal.

If you refuse to immunize, the risk of infection increases significantly. At the same time, experts note that in unvaccinated children, the disease occurs in extremely severe forms, causing serious complications, often even fatal. Vaccinated children can also become infected, so parents should not assume that vaccination completely protects against the disease. But, nevertheless, in vaccinated children, a smooth course and a favorable outcome are noted, many children can be carriers of the infection only for a while, while they themselves do not suffer from diphtheria. The development of diphtheria in vaccinated children becomes possible with a decrease in immunity, as well as in cases of violation of the terms and rules of vaccination.

Complications after vaccination against diphtheria: temperature, pain, bump

Parents should be aware of reactions that may occur to the vaccine so they know when to seek professional help. Like any other vaccination, diphtheria immunization can cause some side effects and complications. Most often there are minor side effects from vaccination against diphtheria. The first few days, unpleasant symptoms can be observed that do not pose a threat to the child's body and, as a rule, soon pass without a trace.

Usually there are such side effects on the vaccination against diphtheria in children, such as redness of the injection site, lethargy, drowsiness, general malaise, weakness. The child may even experience pain after vaccination against diphtheria at the injection site, such a reaction is considered quite normal and can be observed within a week after vaccination. Experts even warn parents that a bump from a diphtheria vaccination may form at the injection site. It appears as a result of the vaccine preparation getting into the subcutaneous tissue, while it needs to be injected only into the muscle. There is nothing dangerous in the formation of a bump, however, such a formation will resolve for a long time - about a month, causing pain. Often, children feel pain and aches in the muscles and joints.

The temperature after vaccination against diphtheria is a common occurrence, however, if it does not reach 40 degrees. If the temperature has risen to 38 degrees, while it lasts for more than two days, an antipyretic should be given.

In some cases, allergic reactions to the composition of the vaccine preparation may develop. They usually manifest as a skin rash, swelling, and hives.

It is extremely rare that complications occur after vaccination against diphtheria, while they usually do not pose a danger to the health of the child. These include diarrhea, profuse sweating, cough, pharyngitis, otitis media, runny nose and bronchitis.

In pediatric practice, however, there have been cases of serious complications to the ADS vaccine, which are manifested by severe allergic reactions. An allergy in a child may be to each of the components of the vaccine preparation, therefore, before immunization, children should be examined by narrow specialists. It is imperative that parents show the child to a neurologist, since complications may be associated with impaired functioning of the central nervous system.

There is only one absolute contraindication to vaccination against diphtheria, and this is an allergic reaction of the child's body to the components of the vaccine. In this case, immunization cannot be carried out at all. Temporarily, the vaccine is not given if the child has a fever or other signs of a cold. Vaccination is postponed for a month from the moment of full recovery of the child.

What is impossible after vaccination against diphtheria, so as not to cause complications?

To minimize the occurrence of side effects after a diphtheria vaccination in children, you should know how to care for the puncture site. Many parents are interested in the question of what should not be done after diphtheria vaccination so as not to cause complications.

First of all, they want to know if it is possible to bathe the baby after vaccination. In fact, there are no contraindications to water procedures, just do not allow soap to get on the injection site, and also use too hot water. During the week, it is not recommended to use a washcloth so as not to irritate the delicate baby skin. It is also not necessary to treat the injection site with any antiseptic agents.

In the event of an epidemic of diphtheria, mass vaccination is carried out unscheduled. To create strong immunity, it is very important to vaccinate on time, without violating the deadlines, because the earlier the child is vaccinated, the less likely it is to contract a dangerous infection. Knowing at what age children are vaccinated against diphtheria, parents can independently control the timing of vaccination.

All parents have the right to refuse to vaccinate their child by submitting a written refusal addressed to the head of the children's clinic.

Diphtheria is an infectious disease that causes inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, pharynx, nose, eyes, or genitals. The main threat in this case is not inflammation itself, but poisoning with a toxin, which is produced by the causative agent of the disease - diphtheria bacillus. The toxin affects the nervous and cardiovascular systems.

You can get diphtheria at any age and quite easily, as it is transmitted by airborne droplets, and sometimes through household items. For this reason, diphtheria is considered an easily transmitted and dangerous disease. Children are most susceptible to infection. Therefore, to prevent the disease, vaccination against diphtheria is necessary for children, which allows them to protect them.

Varieties of diphtheria vaccines

Combined vaccines are used to prevent diphtheria in children in Russia. The composition of the vaccines includes diphtheria toxoid - a drug that produces antibodies to the causative agent of the disease, Bacillus Loeffler.

There are 3 types of vaccines:

  • ADS (diphtheria-tetanus vaccine);
  • ADS-M (ADS in small doses);
  • DTP (has a triple counteraction against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough).

Also, a monovaccine for diphtheria AD-M is known to medicine, but it is practically not used, since a complex vaccine is usually made immediately.

The most common diphtheria vaccine is DTP because:

  • used for the simultaneous prevention of diphtheria and tetanus in children;
  • the timing of vaccination of both vaccinations are the same.

Vaccination schedule and route of vaccination

In accordance with the Russian vaccination calendar, children under one year old are vaccinated against diphtheria 3 times:

  • at 3 months;
  • at 4 - 5 months;
  • at 6 months.

3 introduced diphtheria vaccines form the body's resistance to the causative agent of the disease. The next vaccinations are done after a year to support immunity.

According to the schedule, revaccination (re-vaccination against diphtheria) is carried out:

  • at 18 months;
  • at 7 years old;
  • at 14 years old.

When all 5 vaccinations are given in childhood, the body becomes resistant to the effects of infection, so the following vaccines are given less often - once every 10 years.

The question of where the vaccine is administered remains one of the most important for parents. The injection is administered exclusively intramuscularly. The vaccine is not given subcutaneously or intravenously.

The most common injection sites are the thigh and deltoid muscle of the shoulder. Children under the age of three are injected into the middle third of the anterolateral surface of the thigh, older children - into the upper third of the protrusion in the shoulder area. After an injection into a muscle, the injection site usually hurts.

Contraindications

A huge advantage of the vaccine is that there are practically no contraindications. Vaccination against diphtheria is not given only to those children who have an individual intolerance to the components. The consequences of vaccinations for children with intolerance can be quite serious.

You should not be vaccinated if your child:

  • heat;
  • eczema, skin disease;
  • diathesis;
  • treatment with strong drugs;
  • acute infectious disease.

The consequences that occur due to the fact that contraindications were not observed may be irreversible.

Normal reaction to vaccination and side effects

Parents should be prepared for the fact that after vaccination in children there is a certain reaction to it. Normal reactions at any age in children include:

  • redness of the skin at the injection site;
  • drowsiness;
  • slight malaise;
  • lethargy, apathy;
  • the appearance of a bump at the injection site. A lump may appear when the injection is not injected into the muscle, but into the skin, that is, if it is injected incorrectly. There is nothing dangerous in this, but the lump will resolve for a long time - from 3 weeks to a month;
  • swelling in the place where the diphtheria vaccine was administered;
  • mild pain. The injection usually hurts for about a week;
  • temperature rise.

The above effects after vaccination are not considered serious complications - most of them can pass within the first week after the injection, and in some children there is no reaction to the vaccine at all.

Side effects from vaccinations may manifest as an allergy to the components of the drug. They can also be caused by non-compliance with recommendations on contraindications for vaccination against diphtheria.

Vaccinations against diphtheria and tetanus are included in one, that is, parents will not have to take their child to the clinic again. It also avoids unnecessary stress for the child, and possible side effects can be transferred at a time.

Complications after vaccination

There are more unpleasant consequences of vaccination. However, they are also very rare and do not cause serious harm to health. These include:

  • profuse sweating;
  • itching, scabies;
  • dermatitis;
  • cough;
  • diarrhea;
  • otitis;
  • pharyngitis;
  • bronchitis;
  • runny nose.

The listed diseases are complications that can occur after vaccination.

You can get more serious diseases that can occur if contraindications to vaccination are not followed. After a child has been ill with diphtheria, among the most serious complications in the cardiovascular system, one can often single out myocarditis, heart rhythm disturbances.

Neurological complications of diphtheria are caused by damage to various cranial and peripheral nerves and are manifested by accommodation paralysis, strabismus, paresis of the extremities, and in more severe cases, paralysis of the respiratory muscles and muscles of the diaphragm.

However, medical practice does not know a single death after vaccination with ADS, not a single child fell into anaphylactic shock - these facts speak of the benefits and harmlessness of vaccination. Of course, parents' concerns about whether or not to get vaccinated are understandable, but before refusing or agreeing to a vaccine, it's always best to consult a specialist.

Rules of conduct for parents before and after vaccination

In order to avoid unpleasant complications, which are usually caused by the fact that parents do not comply with contraindications, you should know a few simple recommendations.

After vaccination, it is worth monitoring the condition of the baby - for any hint of side effects. If they appear, you need to visit a pediatrician to be sure that this is a normal reaction to the vaccine.

Some useful tips for parents who are going to vaccinate their baby against diphtheria:

  1. Consult with a specialist. Ask your doctor about the specifics of the vaccine, the vaccination schedule, possible side effects, the pros and cons of the vaccine, and based on the information available, make the right decision.
  2. When wondering where to go to get vaccinated, give preference to public clinics or doctors recommended to you by loved ones.
  3. Before agreeing to be vaccinated, it is important to remember that the child must be absolutely healthy before vaccination.

The key question - is it possible to wet the injection site? The vaccine is allowed to be wetted on the first day after the injection, but not with hot water. It is better to wash the child in the shower and warm water; in the first days after vaccination, refuse to take a bath. You should not use various shower gels, but it is better to use ordinary baby soap. In the first week after vaccination, you should not use a washcloth, because it often causes redness or inflammation of the injection site.

After vaccination, it is not desirable that the child is supercooled or, conversely, overheated - this can reduce immunity.

Most parents believe that diphtheria vaccination should be mandatory, but you can opt out of it if you wish. It is important to remember that diphtheria vaccination protects the child from an infectious disease. According to statistics, only 5% of children become infected with diphtheria, but if a child is vaccinated, even if he becomes ill, he will endure the disease much easier.

Diphtheria: get vaccinated or get sick

Answers

The strong toxin that diphtheria bacilli secrete is the main cause of severe poisoning and death, but thanks to the introduction of mandatory vaccination into the calendar, the prevalence of this infection has been significantly reduced.

WHAT IS THE DIPHTHERIA VACCINE

The diphtheria vaccine, unlike many other vaccines, does not contain live and weakened microorganisms. To acquire stable immunity, a specially processed toxin of the pathogen is injected subcutaneously. After that, the body begins to actively produce antibodies in the form of antitoxins. These substances provide a person's immunity to diphtheria bacillus. The effect of the vaccine lasts about 10 years, then revaccination is necessary.

Diphtheria toxoid is used as an integral element in the complex vaccines ADS (without pertussis component) and DPT (pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus antitoxins).

Children of the first year of life, preschoolers and schoolchildren are subject to mandatory vaccination, since the child's body is especially susceptible to the negative impact of this infection.

For adults, routine vaccinations are provided, which should be carried out every 10 years, but more often vaccinations are postponed or completely abandoned.

Population groups that are subject to mandatory vaccination:

  • medical workers;
  • staff of catering establishments;
  • people working in preschool and school educational institutions;
  • people living in a region with an unfavorable epidemic situation.

The first revaccination is usually carried out between the ages of 18 and 27, the second - at the age of 28 to 37 years, etc.

CONTRAINDICATIONS TO DIPHTHERIA VACCINATION

Even in a healthy adult, the diphtheria vaccine can cause a reaction, so before the procedure, the doctor conducts an examination and asks the patient about contraindications to vaccination.

Conditional contraindications:

  • viral infection less than a month ago;
  • body temperature is above normal;
  • conditions that are accompanied by a decrease in immunity;
  • acute period of skin diseases;
  • exacerbation of chronic pathologies;
  • first trimester of pregnancy.

WHO points out the need to vaccinate even pregnant women after 12 weeks of pregnancy. Anatoxin will not harm the fetus, but will provide protection to the newborn in the first 3 months of life.

Reactions to the diphtheria vaccine are rare in adults. However, for some time after the procedure, it is recommended to avoid crowded places, avoid the influence of high temperatures, have more rest, and do not abuse food and alcohol.

SIDE EFFECTS AFTER DIPHTHERIA VACCINATION

In adults, side effects of the vaccine are rare.

Cases of severe allergies or neurological disorders were not recorded.

Possible consequences of vaccination against diphtheria:

  • pain and swelling at the injection site;
  • an increase in regional axillary lymph nodes;
  • fever;
  • irritability, manifestation of aggression;
  • fatigue and apathy;
  • decreased appetite.

Fever in the first day after the injection is considered normal. The temperature can be brought down with drugs that are used for colds. If you feel unwell for more than a week, then it is better to consult a doctor.

COMPLICATIONS AFTER DIPHTHERIA VACCINATION IN ADULTS

Subject to these rules in adults, side effects of diphtheria vaccination in the form of complications are rarely recorded. It happens that it is impossible to identify a predisposition to such a reaction and predict the outcome.

Sometimes side effects from vaccination are accompanied by Quincke's edema, an attack of anaphylactic shock, diarrhea and vomiting.

Possible complications of vaccination:

  • Anaphylactic shock occurs in persons predisposed to allergic reactions, or in patients with bronchial asthma.
  • An increase in body temperature to critical levels.
  • Abscess at the injection site.
  • Complications from the heart (tachycardia, arrhythmia).
  • Seizures.

If an acute allergic reaction to the first vaccination is detected, subsequent stages of vaccination are not carried out.

Vaccination against diphtheria does not eliminate the risk of infection, but the disease in this case will be much easier than in an unvaccinated person.

Diphtheria is a disease from a number of infectious diseases, which is characterized by inflammation of the oropharynx and nasopharynx (in more rare cases, inflammation.

Diphtheria vaccination for adults: side effects after, whether to do

A lot of speculation and legends are associated with vaccinations, and the question "to do or not?" vaccination, for example, against diphtheria is faced by many. On the one hand, it seems like a good thing to do, because the disease and its consequences are serious. But on the other hand, nothing has been heard about such a disease as diphtheria for a long time, and the Internet is "teeming" with stories about the dangers of various vaccinations. Let's try to understand these issues.

All basic vaccinations are given to a person within the first year after he was born. Then, about the same number more, over the following years, until he becomes an adult. The only exception is unscheduled vaccination, which happens infrequently. The total number of certain types of vaccinations given to children before they reach the age of majority is around 25.

However, this is only a “mandatory program”. Medical thought does not stop for a minute and, almost every year, it produces all new drugs, the essence of the actions and effects of which is to improve immunity, by infecting a child or an adult with a mild form of the disease. Vlachi, using various pretexts, try to convince a person to get vaccinated, often simply by fulfilling the standard indicators.

What is diphtheria?

If we fast forward a few decades into the past, then the question of whether or not to vaccinate against diphtheria did not even stand then. The disease was widely known, one way or another, its outbreaks periodically occurred in the family circle, in large work groups or among friends. And such a result is easily explained, because diphtheria is an infectious disease that is caused by a microbacterium belonging to root bacteria (Bacillus Leffer) and it is perfectly transmitted by airborne droplets. As a result of infection, the respiratory system, skin, eyes, nervous and, sometimes, the genitourinary system are negatively affected. Symptoms of diphtheria are fever, sore throat, swelling in the neck. In addition, many groups of lymph nodes may increase, a film plaque will appear on the tonsils, as well as many other symptoms and signs. Among the most dangerous complications of diphtheria are:

  • Paralysis of the respiratory tract, the muscular skeleton of the legs, arms, neck and other organs, indicating that the nervous system is affected.
  • Inflammatory process in the cardiovascular system

The most dangerous damage to the function of respiration and heart, as this can lead to death

Do adults need a diphtheria vaccine?

To the question of whether to vaccinate against diphtheria, the answer of physicians is unequivocal - of course, yes! In recent years, the word diphtheria has been forgotten, and this has happened mainly due to the systematic vaccination of the population over the past decades. At the same time, in the form of single outbreaks of the disease and its consequences occur, but only in those who are not vaccinated or are vaccinated incorrectly with a violation of the scheme.

How and where to vaccinate adults?

When is it necessary to vaccinate adults? They do this if this has not been done before, especially when the person was a child. In addition, if the course of injections was made according to the wrong vaccination schedule or a weakened vaccine was used.

When, before reaching the age of 16, the entire course of diphtheria vaccinations has been done, then it is necessary to administer the drug mixture every 10 years. It often happens that for various reasons, the planned vaccination of the child was not done. This can happen due to contraindications, or if the parents refuse. In such cases, revaccination should be done not at the age of 26, but sooner or later.

Information about the vaccination that needs to be given contains a vaccination card and a medical book. They are managed by the local polyclinic, which, based on information about the necessary vaccination, plans to purchase medicines for each year. At the right time, the patient is called for the procedure for administering the vaccine.

So, ideally, adults should be vaccinated once every 10 years, but until what age? Previously, the upper threshold was considered the age of 66 years. However, in recent years, human life expectancy in Russia has increased and now there is no upper age limit.

In the case when an adult for some reason did not deliver as a child, special lightweight vaccines are used, in which the concentration of the antigen is intentionally reduced. In such a situation, the vaccination schedule also changes, the initial course here is considered to be two vaccinations, which are separated by 1-1.5 months. The first revaccination is carried out after about half a year, the second after another five years, then the schedule returns to the usual interval of 10 years.

As a drug for revaccination, a substance called "ADS-M Anatoxin" is used. The amount of antigen in it is reduced, it acts quite effectively against both diphtheria and tetanus.

People are often afraid of injections and are very interested Where and how is the diphtheria vaccine given to adults? If the drug is administered intramuscularly to children, then for people who have reached the age of majority, the method of deep subcutaneous injection into the area under the scapula is suitable. In addition, intramuscular administration is also possible. In this case, the anterior outer part of the thigh is used as the injection zone.

Diphtheria vaccination contraindications

By itself, the vaccine is administered to adults without any special preparatory measures. However, there is a list of contraindications, vaccination is prohibited for:

  • Pregnant and lactating women
  • Adults with kidney or liver problems
  • Those who have previously been diagnosed with an allergy to the constituent drugs, including the toxoid itself against tetanus and diphtheria
  • Patients with acute illnesses. In this situation, the procedure is delayed for several weeks.
  • People with exacerbation of chronic diseases and any allergic processes, for example, to food, medicine. In this case, the injection is done after the exacerbation stage has passed.

The vaccine itself must be of high quality, the storage conditions and expiration date must not be violated. If possible, for an ampoule with medicine, you need to check:

  • Is the integrity of the ampoule broken?
  • Presence of labeling with an expiration date
  • If you shake the ampoule, the precipitate should disappear

Side effects of vaccines in adults

Usually, the diphtheria vaccine does not cause any worries and consequences, except for a small combat effect when administered. Poor tolerance and an acute reaction of the body is extremely rare. We list the most common manifestations of side effects when injecting a vaccine in adults:

  • Probably a short feeling of malaise with impaired well-being, as well as an increase in body temperature
  • Irritation, redness, swelling in the area where the injection was given
  • An area of inflamed tissue appears around the injection site, usually the diameter of such localization does not exceed 20 mm
  • Infrequently, an allergic reaction is possible, for example, a local manifestation of urticaria or a general manifestation of Quincke's edema

To assess the response to a diphtheria vaccination in an adult, it is necessary to wait a day after its administration.

Possible complications and consequences

In autumn, some of the following complications are infrequently likely:

  • Long-term fever, weakness, purulent phenomena in the area around the injection site due to the existing toxic reaction. Usually this happens due to neglect of the general rules for introducing a substance, as a result of which an infection enters the body in the same place.
  • Convulsive syndrome caused by lesions of various parts of the nervous system
  • Very rarely, post-vaccination encephalitis or inflammation of the brain is possible. There is such a complication in the truest sense of the word "one in a million", and usually develops in the first few days after vaccination

The above pathological conditions, consequences and side effects associated with the introduction of a diphtheria vaccination are temporary and in most cases are subject to a practiced adjustment with the help of medications prescribed based on the symptoms. As a rule, the list of such drugs for adult patients includes antiallergic, antipyretic, anticonvulsant, antispasmodic and other drugs.

How likely is it for an adult to get diphtheria after being vaccinated against it? Such situations are very rare and are mainly explained by the fact that a low-quality vaccine is used, with a reduced effect, or the timing of planned revaccination is disrupted. It should be noted that in the case of such an infection, the symptoms of the disease will still be lower, it will be easier to treat and tolerate.

Let's summarize a little

  • How often is the diphtheria vaccine given to an adult? The revaccination schedule for the desired effect is 10 years, provided that a course of standard vaccination was completed in childhood.
  • The diphtheria remedies used today are well detoxified and easily tolerated.
  • Why get vaccinated against diphtheria as an adult? This is necessary to avoid falling into the risk group, since this type of disease is infectious and easy to catch. It is enough to go to any region where the epidemic situation is unfavorable and the probability of getting sick will increase sharply.
  • Where can I go if I am an adult and want to get a diphtheria vaccine? To do this, you need to contact the therapist at the clinic at the place of residence.

Vaccination against diphtheria: consequences and effects on the body

Forewarned is forearmed. This expression is most appropriate for the disease called diphtheria. Diphtheria is a disease of infectious origin, which is very difficult to fight. And in most cases, it's useless.

Statistics have shown that infections among children in 50-70% of cases end in death. For nearly 50 consecutive years, the diphtheria vaccine has saved millions of children's lives. And infection is observed in less than 10%.

What is the diphtheria vaccine

Diphtheria bacillus toxin is made weakened and incapacitated, and then injected into the human body. At the same time, the disease is not able to develop a priori. Vaccination against diphtheria is done artificially in qualified laboratories, undergoing many tests. Therefore, the fear of getting infected through an injection must be discarded forever. The main thing is to observe contraindications and health will not be harmed.

The effect of the diphtheria vaccine on the body

The diphtheria vaccine does not act on the stick that has entered the body. Its effectiveness is aimed at toxic elements from bacteria. If you get rid of them, then the disease will recede. The injected drugs provoke the immune system to produce antitoxins. Thanks to such elements, the disease is no longer terrible for your body.

In order not to give an injection thoughtlessly or just refuse it, it is worth knowing what consequences can overtake you or your child in case of infection with diphtheria. The disease is made dangerous not by the presence or concentration of diphtheria bacillus, which enters the body through household or airborne droplets. And the toxic substance that this microbe releases. It affects the mucous membranes, larynx, respiratory tract, etc.

Plaque envelops the walls of the mucosa in a single layer and it is very problematic to remove it mechanically. Ulcerative formations and tissue injury remain. By chemical means, that is, by medication, it is also not easy to defeat the disease.

Where is the diphtheria vaccine given?

Usually, the injection site for diphtheria is selected depending on the age category:

  • children - intramuscularly, often in the left forearm, thigh, under the shoulder blade;
  • adults - the injection is done under the skin.

When to vaccinate

Again, it all depends on age. Children are usually vaccinated according to the following schedule:

  • at 3 months the first vaccination against diphtheria;
  • 2 more injections in the interval after 45 days each injection;
  • next diphtheria vaccine at 1.5 years;
  • further at school age - at 6, 14 and 18 years.

Further, you need to be vaccinated yourself 5 years after the last injection, and the next diphtheria vaccine is needed every 10 years of life. If the first vaccination against the disease was made in adulthood, then he is vaccinated in 3 approaches:

  • the first vaccination against diphtheria - any age;
  • the second - exactly 30 days later;
  • the third - in a year;
  • subsequent vaccinations - after 10 years each.

The schedule is acceptable only for people without contraindications for diphtheria vaccination.

Types of diphtheria vaccine

Injections are divided into 3 types:

  1. DTP - the most known to us since childhood with triple counteraction (diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus), is used for children under 6 years old;
  2. ADS - against diphtheria and tetanus, applicable to people with contraindications to pertussis vaccine;
  3. ADS-M - its injections are given to children over 6 years of age and diphtheria vaccinations to adults who have already received DTP in childhood.

Contraindications

A period of illness is undesirable for vaccination. Even if only a runny nose or a cold struck the body. It is also strictly forbidden to give injections to persons allergic to substances from the vaccine. Also pregnancy up to 12 weeks.

Is the body fully protected after vaccination

No vaccine or injection guarantees that a person will not get diphtheria. Vaccination greatly reduces the risk of infection - up to 100%. It all depends on the characteristics of the body and the support of the immune system.

Pregnancy as a reason to stop vaccinating

The World Health Organization notes that pregnancy is not a hindrance to vaccination. Unless the pregnant woman has inherited contraindications. After vaccination against diphtheria, the baby will be born already protected against infection for the first months of life, just up to 3 months of age.

Neither the child nor the mother will become infected, because the injection contains only antitoxin. But the pregnancy must last more than 12 weeks. Because there is no time that is more dangerous for medical intervention than pregnancy during the formation of the fetus.

How to care for the injection site

Children often confuse injections and are afraid to wet or touch the place where the drug was injected, as when handling Mantoux tests. The diphtheria vaccine has no restrictions on contact with the injection site. But still, it is better to avoid intense influences: friction, scratching, hot water with salt when bathing, etc. This will make it possible to avoid the appearance of external reactions on the skin.

Body reactions after vaccination

The effects that the vaccine can cause are quite diverse, but do not be afraid. This is a natural reaction of the body and the struggle with an unfamiliar substance in the body. So, when symptoms appear, keep the patient calm. If complications or side effects are suspected, it would not hurt to visit a doctor. Especially if a woman is pregnant, regardless of the term.

  • General deterioration in health. It looks like a cold or a breakdown. The patient wants to sleep, markedly passive behavior. The condition can last a maximum of a week. If the term of symptoms is rapidly increasing, then it is impossible to be against a visit to the clinic.
  • Pain, swelling, induration at the injection site. Also no reason to worry. The drug will completely leave the injection site in a week and at the same time the discomfort in this area will disappear.
  • Increase in body temperature. It happens that during the day a similar symptom appears. Knock down the fever with the usual medicines you use for colds. But if the temperature did not appear in a short period of time after the injection, then find out with the doctor what could provoke such a condition.

Complications and consequences of vaccination

So far, in the history of vaccination against diphtheria, no cases similar to complications have been recorded. The most significant manifestation effects are an undiagnosed allergy to the drug, which is effectively dealt with by doctors. Or an injection introduced into the child's body during diathesis and similar diagnoses. This should be attributed to non-compliance with contraindications, and not complications.

Side effects of the diphtheria vaccine

Unlike complications, side effects do exist. But they do not pose a serious threat to the life or health of the patient.

  • external - itching, skin manifestations, sweating;
  • internal - problems with stools, ear inflammation, bronchitis and other side effects.

Nevertheless, the diphtheria vaccine is considered the safest and most harmless in medicine, because the side effects are akin to a mild cold. Remember, the doctor's task is to provide you with prevention and protection of the body. And yours is to follow the safe effect in order to avoid negative consequences.

I was vaccinated at the age of 27, the first day I had a temperature and malaise, then everything went away.

They were vaccinated at the age of 45 - a day later the temperature rose to 37.3 with weakness. malaise and wanted to lie down on the third day it got better and the temperature returned to normal.

They vaccinated a child of 6 years old .. they suffer from headaches, temperature

A 12 year old child was vaccinated. temperature 3 days 37, 38

made in years the temperature rose immediately to 39, today the second day the temperature is 38.5, the general condition is sluggish, the head hurts and the throat hurts a lot. Weakness

I got vaccinated, the injection site on my back hurt so much that I couldn’t move for the first three days, there was a tumor, then it began to subside, the pain disappeared. But I suffered terribly (

I was vaccinated for 28 years, nothing hurts anywhere, it doesn’t itch, only I’m too lazy to do everything!

Same story. The temperature rose the next day to 38.8. Holds the third day 37.5. My back hurts like I was hit with a crowbar)) it’s impossible to move) last time it was just as hard to endure. But a colleague from work doesn’t hurt anything, as if they didn’t do anything)

She was vaccinated against diphtheria and tetanus at the age of 48. On the first day she was shivering. Then there was severe rhinitis for a week.

I got vaccinated at 55. After 10 days, my throat started to hurt. After a while it seemed to pass. And then the sores began - inflammation of the conjunctivated sacs, purulent tonsillitis, or diphtheria? Than I just don’t treat her - it doesn’t help.

They were vaccinated at the age of 34, the injection site immediately began to hurt, at first the arm was very dressed up, then, on the contrary, it became limp as it became sluggish, then the pain increased to the hand, it hurts and hard to raise or strain the arm until there was no nepiratura, about 18 hours passed. I asked about the side effects, neither the doctor nor the nurse told me anything except the temperature (I would have known, I didn’t do it before flying to another city.

Did ADSM four years ago.

After it there was a temperature, problems with a chair, a throat, a nose. After all this has passed (relatively), I suffer - my throat always hurts, my nose became weak, just a little stuffiness, constant weakness, no strength. I'm still in pain for 4 years. Life has changed radically, they made me a sick person! Are experiments being staged on a federal scale? ...

The first day after the vaccination, I already had depression ... my back hurt for two days. Weakness. Apathy. A few days later, the throat ached, then the trachea and an empty, barely receding cough began ... the head hurts and the nose works every other time ... (((In the vaccination room, they didn’t even warn about anything like that, but to a direct question - “does the vaccine weaken immunity from diphtheria?" - I received a counter indignant question - "No, of course. Why would I?!"

got vaccinated, a reason to get drunk ...

two weeks ago I got vaccinated on my back, the bump hurts, it turned red, I feel terrible discomfort, I went to the vaccination room and they said to do vodka compresses. Terrible, I wouldn't have known

I got this vaccine a year ago ... The injection site still hurts.

I was vaccinated yesterday in the shoulder, by the evening the scapula began to hurt in one place.

I got vaccinated against diphtheria in March 2016. Within two weeks, a small lump formed in the form of a ball under the skin, the hospital said that there was no reason to worry. This bump still lives in my body. And already in January 2018, she swelled for no reason - for no reason at all. Now it is about 3 cm in diameter and it hurts. Looks like you need to go to the hospital.

made 2 vaccinations against flu and diphtheria at the same time after vaccinations for 3 months now mucus and sore throat and paroxysmal cough were checked by a pulmonologist asthma and bronchitis ruled out Tired of this condition

:evil: a child of 10 months I'm afraid to put the ADS vaccine on him

I'm 23 got the Indian diphtheria and tetanus vaccination yesterday. There were no side effects during these two days. Immediately after the habit, the head ached, but maybe from excitement.

After vaccination, a runny nose, a swollen neck in the region of the lymph node on the left, tears flow from the eyes, red eyes, I sneeze. Noise with pulsation in left head. No temperature.

Damn, such reviews are sad. Did everyone do it Indian?

I got vaccinated yesterday. The injection site still hurts, swollen and reddened. Hope it goes away soon

“I got vaccinated at 55. After 10 days, my throat started to hurt. After a while it seemed to pass. And then the sores began - inflammation of the conjunctivated sacs, purulent tonsillitis, or diphtheria? Than I just don’t treat her - it doesn’t help. ”

ARE YOU SERIOUSLY? After 10 days.

All adults behave like little ones: the injection site hurts a lot, your head hurts, your throat hurts, etc. Yes, there is discomfort at the injection site, but this is not the kind of pain from which you whine and scare other people.

A 7-year-old child was vaccinated on February 20, 2018, his leg was very sore, February 22, 2018 it was very swollen and everything turned red around the vaccination, the temperature was 37, they called an ambulance, they said nothing terrible (((today February 23, it didn’t get better (((

I will add))) On the 24th, there were no spots, which means that the reaction to the vaccine is true, but you should not panic)))

I have three children. Everyone was vaccinated. The maximum temperature rose, the vaccination site swelled and turned red. It all went away after a couple of days. These are trifles in comparison with the disease of diphtheria and mortality from it. We already have in the city. measles epidemic. When to expect diphtheria?

Diphtheria vaccination; what are the side effects in adults

Diphtheria is an infectious disease caused by toxigenic strains of diphtheria bacillus, which is accompanied by an acute inflammatory process of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.

Diphtheria is spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. The causative agents of diphtheria in the course of their life activity secrete toxins that affect the palatine tonsils, the upper respiratory tract (often the larynx). Toxins can also cause intoxication of the body and affect internal systems and organs. Diphtheria is one of the most feared childhood diseases.

That is why a timely vaccination against diphtheria is so important, the side effects of which are not as terrible as the disease itself. Diphtheria currently affects many adults and unvaccinated children. This disease is treatable, but even with timely and proper therapy, mortality reaches about 10%.

The main preventive measure to prevent diphtheria is vaccination. For many years, routine vaccinations that have been given to the population have helped to avoid epidemics. The diphtheria vaccine is given either under the shoulder blade or in the shoulder.

Diphtheria vaccine side effects

In the first 24 hours after administration of the drug, temporary local and general reactions may occur.

  • Severe pain at or around the injection site. Pain can also spread to the lymph nodes that are in the armpit.
  • Increased body temperature.
  • Aggressiveness and irritability.
  • Decreased performance due to reduced immunity.

All of these symptoms usually resolve within one to two days. Side effects do not pose a serious threat to the life and health of the patient.

In most cases, the first adverse reactions appear within 24 hours after the injection. They go away on their own and do not require any treatment. All this suggests that you should not be afraid of vaccination.

To vaccinate or not to vaccinate is up to you. For example, if you live in a small town and do not travel anywhere, then the risk of contracting diphtheria is minimal. If you live in a big city or metropolis, travel often, then the diphtheria vaccination will save you from undesirable consequences.

Diphtheria vaccination for children: side effects, contraindications

Young children are vaccinated from the age of three months. In this case, various types of vaccines are used - ADS, ADS-M, DTP and their combinations. Adults are vaccinated subcutaneously, and children intramuscularly. In some cases, at the request of the patient, an injection is given in the buttock. Regardless of where the vaccine is given, the effect is always the same.

Side effects of the diphtheria vaccine can occur as early as a few hours after vaccination, and sometimes not until the next day. A person may feel drowsiness, apathy, refuse to eat, suffer from fever. Swelling and, in some cases, redness may appear at the injection site.

Children are vaccinated according to the following schedule:

  • 3 months - the first vaccination against diphtheria.
  • 2 more injections with an interval of 45 days.
  • The next vaccination is carried out at 1.5 years.
  • Further, the vaccine is administered at 6, 14 and 18 years.

In the future, a person should be vaccinated on their own every 10 years.

Types of diphtheria vaccines:

  • ADS - against diphtheria and tetanus
  • DPT - vaccination against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, for children under 6 years old
  • DTP-M - injections for adults who received DTP in childhood and children over 6 years of age.

Contraindications

Vaccination against diphtheria has a minimum of contraindications. The vaccination is not done if the child has an individual intolerance to the components of the drug. Vaccination is delayed for a while:

  • in the acute course of any of the diseases
  • At high body temperature
  • If the patient is taking strong medications
  • If the child has diathesis
  • With eczema.

Side effects are possible if individual intolerance was not detected in time. In other cases, there is a normal reaction to vaccination.

Possible reactions to the vaccine

As a rule, side effects pass quickly, although they cause some discomfort. The most common reactions include:

  • lethargy
  • drowsiness
  • local reaction: redness of the skin
  • general malaise
  • pain at the injection site (may be present for up to a week)
  • slight swelling at the injection site, may last for a week until the drug is absorbed into the blood
  • a bump at the injection site (dissolves within a month, this happens when the drug enters not into the muscle, but into the fiber under the skin)
  • an increase in body temperature (usually not very large). At a very high body temperature, antipyretics are used.

To avoid side effects, you need to follow the basic rules for caring for the puncture site. Although bathing is not forbidden, bathing in too hot baths with foam or salt should be avoided. It is better not to use a washcloth for a week.

Parents should not refuse vaccination against diphtheria. Of course, the vaccine does not guarantee that a person will not get sick, but it significantly reduces the risk of infection - by almost 100%.

Diphtheria vaccination: side effects in adults, contraindications

Adults are vaccinated against diphtheria in three approaches:

  • first vaccination - at any age
  • the second - after 30 days
  • third - after 1 year

Subsequent vaccinations are carried out with an interval of 10 years.

If adults refuse vaccination, then complications such as respiratory failure, swelling of the throat and neck, damage to the nervous system, heart and kidneys may occur when infected with the disease. Vaccination against diphtheria reduces the risk of infection, but only for 10 years, so vaccination is carried out periodically.

First of all, vaccinations are given to students, construction workers, military personnel, railway workers and those people who live in areas where there is an unfavorable epidemiological situation.

Contraindications

There are no specific contraindications against vaccination of adults. However, it is not carried out for colds, chronic and acute diseases, allergies. Vaccinations are not given to pregnant women in the first and third trimesters of pregnancy.

After vaccination, drafts, exposure to high temperatures, contact with people should be avoided, since all this significantly reduces immunity. But you can wash.

Side effects

In adults, complications rarely occur after vaccination. However, sometimes there is pain at the site of vaccination, the temperature may rise, a rash and swelling may appear.

After a diphtheria injection, the risk of diphtheria is reduced. If a person gets sick, then the disease will proceed in a milder form, that is, it is still worth vaccinating.

The diphtheria vaccine promotes a strong immunity to the disease, which persists for years after the injection. It all depends on the individual characteristics of the organism.

The introduction of the vaccine promotes the formation of antitoxic bodies that prevent the development of the disease.
