Hydrogen sulfide baths indications and contraindications. Hydrogen sulfide water benefits and harms how to drink

Sulfide (hydrogen sulfide) mineral waters are natural waters of various salinity and ionic composition, containing more than 10 mg/l of total hydrogen sulfide. Depending on the concentration of hydrogen sulfide, there are weakly hydrogen sulfide waters (10–50 mg/l), medium concentration (50–100 mg/l), strong (100–250 mg/l) and very strong (over 250 mg/l).

The history of the use of sulfide waters in medicine: legends and legends

Sulfide (hydrogen sulfide) waters attracted the attention of mankind much earlier than any other mineral waters. This was facilitated, on the one hand, by the specific smell of these waters, and, on the other hand, by the magical effect that was attributed to native sulfur and its compounds as a remedy for many diseases. Sulfuric waters flowed in the baths of the Golden Palace of Nero. The Greek name for sulfur is theion- divine, - which is still preserved as an integral part in the names of chemical thio compounds. This is a spirit, an unburning fire, a fiery principle, we can say that “hymns of divine love - Ton theion hymnon hoi erotes” were sung to her. Sulfur acts as a kind of conductor of the forces of nature to human society. Sulfur is one of the philosophical elements - the so-called "philosophical sulfur" - and world principles, the energy and soul of nature, a kind of "nuncio" of the sun on Earth, aimed at solving the most important problems. Apparently, it was not by chance that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by brimstone and fire. At the same time, sulfur, its ability to burn and its unpleasant smell were associated with Satan and hell. “Facilis descensus Averni - The path through Avernus is easy”, that is, the path to the underworld - Lake Avernus with sulfuric waters near the city of Kuma in Campania (Italy) was considered the threshold of the underworld.

“On the entire western shore of the bay, from Naples to Kum, sulfur was found in one form or another. Attilius knew this. Sulfur in the form of green translucent blocks was extracted from the mines in the Leucogeev hills, two miles north of the main aqueduct. Around the city of Bailly there were many hot sulfur springs: the sick came to them from all over the empire. There was also a lake called Posidian, named after some Claudian freedman, that was so hot that you could boil meat in it. Even the coastal waters of Baya sometimes filled with hot sulfur, and the sick climbed into the shallow water in the hope of finding healing. Apparently, somewhere in this smoldering earth - the earth where the cave of the Sibyl was located and the flaming holes leading straight to the underworld - somewhere here the sulfur mixed with the waters of Augusta. (Augusta is the main source of the aqueduct that supplied water to the seven cities of the coast from Naples to Pompeii).

From the novel Pompeii by Robert Harris.

The deposits of sulfuric waters gave rise to legends, in them we also see the duality of understanding sulfur, and perhaps human nature. For some nations it was a gift from the gods, for others it was the breath of the devil.

The ancient Romans believed that the healing water in the very center of Tuscany made its way from the bowels of the earth at the behest of the god Saturn. One day, the god Saturn was tired of human wars and strife. He, angry, threw lightning at them. But he did not want to incinerate them, but only to calm them down. Lightning broke through the earth's firmament, and clogged the source, the waters of which had a strange smell - it smelled of hydrogen sulfide, and made everyone who was nearby peaceful, calm and benevolent. Archaeological studies show that the healing sulfurous waters in Italy, in the center of Tuscany, were known to the Etruscans, and then to the Romans. In ancient times, such waters were called "intoxicating". The ancient legend is confirmed by modern research of the Research Center for Balneology and Rehabilitation, Sochi. The use of iodine-bromine and hydrogen sulfide baths has a general sedative and vegetative-stabilizing effect in patients with neurasthenia, but a more significant change in the psycho-emotional status occurs under the influence of hydrogen sulfide balneotherapy.

The Hungarian legend says that in the town the devil plowed Mount Sarshomyo, and fetid water broke through the trail of his plow to the surface. In fact, the healing effect of Harkany water was discovered in 1823 under almost the same circumstances. A worker dug a hole filled with hot water. After spending a whole day in this water, he was surprised to find that he had no pain in his joints, which had tormented him for a long time.

Diseases of the musculoskeletal system are the main profile of all resorts built on the sources of sulfide waters. Sulfur baths of springs (lat. whitish waters) now in the Italian province of Lazio near Rome, appointed in the 1st century. BC. doctor Anthony Musa to his august patient Augustus Octavian for pain in the muscles. “... hugging me, it plays the wonderful warmth of mysterious water, which for a thousand years has been beating from the unknown kitchens of the earth and continuously flows into my bath with a weak current,” G. Hesse wrote about the sulfurous springs of Swiss Baden, where he treated sciatica. Needless to say, very successful. "In addition to the real improvement, I brought something else very valuable from Baden, I stopped pursuing my sciatica too mercilessly." This remark of the great writer, who treated sciatica in Switzerland, once again confirms the conclusion of scientists from Sochi: under the influence of hydrogen sulfide balneotherapy, a significant change in the psycho-emotional status occurs.

Sulfide waters have been used for skin diseases since ancient times. The effect, which is already visible after several procedures, could not go unnoticed. There are many sulphide sources in England, the most famous of them is Bath. "Aquae Sulis" - the Romans called it. Water in the era of the Celts who inhabited Ancient England, as, indeed, in later times, was considered a source of healing power. The resort was founded by a descendant of the sons of the legendary Troy, Bloodud (VIII century BC). This is evidenced by G. Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae, recorded in 1136. An English legend tells of the healing of a prince stricken with leprosy, who was expelled from the palace. Apparently, we are talking about psoriasis: the ancient healers often called it leprosy. The young man began to graze pigs at the edge of the forest near the swamp. After a while, he noticed that those of them who often liked to soak in warm water mixed with mud, the skin became clear and pink. The young man also began to bathe in warm, sharp-smelling waters and was healed. He returned and became king, known in the history of Britain as Bloodud, then reigned for twenty years. He founded the city of Cair Badus, which is now called Bath, and made hot baths in it to heal the sick.

Another English resort - Harrogate in North Yorkshire - is famous for its 88 springs. The source of sulphide waters "Stinking Well - fetid source", known for its beneficial effect on the skin, has been used as a raw material for the production of cosmetic soap since the 19th century. Another Harrogate source - carbonic ferrous waters - "Tuewhit well", named after the pagan god of war, gave the name to the whole industry. In 1596, the court physician of Queen Elizabeth I, T. Bright, confirmed the similarity not only in taste, but also in chemical composition with the waters of the Belgian spa resort, the waters of which were brought to Northern England in jugs. T. Bright suggested using the word "spaw" to refer to waters suitable for drinking treatment. So in the 16th century, the word "spa" entered the English language as a designation of a place where healing waters are treated.

When drinking treatment, sulfide waters have a laxative effect, which also cannot be overlooked. Therefore, they have long been considered the most healing. The smell of hydrogen sulfide inherent in these waters was tried to be reduced by mixing the waters of the source with an infusion of licorice, as was done in North Yorkshire. Dr. Short, in his book Mineral Waters of Yorkshire, published in 1700, calls the sulfuric waters of Darlington and Askern the most disgusting in taste and aroma and recommends adding a little soda to them. Sometimes tea was brewed in these waters for the sole purpose of slightly reducing the specific taste and smell of these miraculous waters.

The first Russian sources of sulfide waters were discovered during the time of Peter I. For the production of the "spirit of war" - gunpowder, a lot of sulfur was required. In 1703, three factories were built near Samara in the places where sulfur springs came out, next to them they built the Sergievsk fortress from an oak forest, named after St. Sergius of Radonezh. The factory population used the healing properties of sulfuric waters - they got rid of various skin diseases. The facts of healing reached the ears of Peter I. In 1717, he sent Doctor of Medicine Gottlieb Schober to Sergievsk with an order to investigate and describe local mineral springs. Dr. G. Schober, having made a chemical analysis of water, revealed the presence of free hydrogen sulfide in it, "... which can pass into the sweat holes of the skin and is suitable for the health of the human body." But only in 1833, the Sergievsky waters appeared on the map of the Russian Empire. In the summer of 1848, the famous Slavophile, critic, poet and publicist I.S. Aksakov, son of the remarkable writer S.T. Aksakov. In his letters, he wrote about the miraculous power of sulfur springs: “... Sulfuric waters do miracles in many cases, especially in relation to rheumatism. I myself saw legless ones who were beginning to walk, crippled with paralysis, who are now dancing, covered with scrofulous measles and a hat on their heads, who are now peeling off like a testicle and have become almost handsome; however, most of them came in the second year or took more than sixty baths ... "

Sulfide water springs form lakes of unusual, often opalescent hues, from whitish-bluish-greenish like "Acque Albule" (lat. whitish waters), to blue, the color of which is named after one of the most famous sanatoriums in Ukraine - "Sinyak". The main attraction of the Sergievsky mineral waters is Sulfur Lake. The area of the water mirror is about a hectare, the depth does not exceed 3 meters. Its water has an unusual turquoise color with various shades. In 1704, Peter Alekseevich ordered to dismantle the oak fortifications of Sergievsk and float them with water to the Terek River in order to build a city in the Caucasus. Perhaps, remembering an old grievance, the old-timers claimed that, compared to Sulfur Lake, the famous Pit in Pyatigorsk was a mug of water with a solution of vitriol. The "stone mug" of Lake Proval is a funnel-shaped 15 m in diameter and 41 m high per quarter (11 m) filled with hot up to 42 ° C, turquoise sulphide water.

In Russia, one of the most famous sources of sulphide waters is "Matsesta" in Sochi, which means "fire water" in Ubykh, and "Utly su" in Bakirovo, which also means "fire water" in Tatar. It is possible that from time immemorial this was the name given to sulfuric waters, not only due to the reddening of the skin from the action of the waters, but also due to the magical fire that the ancient philosophers endowed with sulfur. In ancient Greek mythology, it is mentioned that the sorceress Medea treated the father of the leader of the Argonauts with sulfur, fire and water.

Sulfide (hydrogen sulfide) mineral waters: the mechanism of therapeutic action in balneotherapy

Sulfide (hydrogen sulfide) mineral waters- natural waters of various mineralization and ionic composition, containing more than 10 mg/l of total hydrogen sulfide. Depending on the concentration of hydrogen sulfide, there are weakly hydrogen sulfide waters (10-50 mg/l), medium concentration (50-100 mg/l), strong (100-250 mg/l) and very strong (over 250 mg/l). Sulfide waters are among the most active methods of balneotherapy. AT

Russia is best known for the strong sulphide waters of the Matsesta deposit (Sochi resort). The effect of this type of water (manifested at a hydrogen sulfide content of 70 mg/l) is often referred to in the literature as the Matsesta reaction. The Matsesta effect of exposure is manifested directly by the redness of the skin, which is based on the expansion of blood vessels, the acceleration of blood circulation, and the increase in the number of functioning capillaries. In parts of the body in contact with hydrogen sulfide water, there is a feeling of rush and warmth, as well as a slight burning sensation.

Therapeutic effect of sulfide waters due mainly to the free hydrogen sulfide present in the water, which has active chemical properties. In the mechanism of the therapeutic action of sulfide waters, a large role is played by hormonal changes, changes in the function of the sympathetic-adrenal system, and the state of immunological reactivity. From water to the body, hydrogen sulfide penetrates through the skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract. The duration of hydrogen sulfide circulation in the blood is very short, the gas is very quickly oxidized in the liver and excreted from the body.

When exposed to hydrogen sulfide on the skin, irritation of nerve endings occurs, the amount and activity of histamine, acetylcholine and other substances in it changes. This causes the expansion of small vessels and, as a result, intense redness of the skin, improved blood circulation in the skin and underlying tissues: joint bags, cartilage, internal organs.

Hydrogen sulfide increases the content of sulfhydryl and disulfite groups and activates glutathione, which activates enzyme systems, increases the energy resource of cells and tissues, enhances regenerative processes, and normalizes the processes of excitation and inhibition in the central nervous system. The direct inclusion of hydrogen sulfide and its compounds in biochemical reactions occurring in tissues determines the effect of sulfide waters on the state of metabolic processes, the activity of sulfhydryl groups, which are an integral part of many enzymes.

As a result of the action of sulfide waters, blood pressure normalizes, blood flow speed increases, heart rate slows down somewhat, blood supply and innervation of organs and tissues improves, various types of metabolic processes change, oxygen consumption increases, and pulmonary ventilation increases. Hydrogen sulfide baths also affect the rhythm of heart contractions, contribute to the unloading of the heart, lengthen its periods of rest. “In the Matsesta water, the heart is on sick leave, even more likely on a sanatorium regime. It works less, rests more and receives enhanced nutrition” (N.S. Pravdin, 1925).

Under the influence of sulfide waters in the central nervous system, the processes of inhibition begin to clearly predominate over the processes of excitation. This explains the slight drowsiness while taking sulfide baths. Free hydrogen sulfide and hydrosulfide ions provide a corrective effect on many pathogenetic mechanisms in neurosis, which is manifested by a decrease in anxiety, an improvement in mood, and a smoothing of autonomic dysfunction.

Sulfide balneotherapy is used in the form of general baths, semi-baths, two and four-chamber baths, irrigation of the head, face, gums, inhalations with sprayed sulfide water, gynecological irrigation, rising shower. A technique for irrigation of the periodontium with hydrogen sulfide water in the complex treatment of chronic generalized periodontitis has been developed.

In 1992, the Ministry of Health developed and approved in the prescribed manner a method for the treatment of post-burn hypertrophic and keloid scars using Matsesta hydrogen sulfide irrigation. When exposed to a directed flow of Matsesta hydrogen sulfide water under a certain pressure, three factors act on the organs: chemical composition, temperature, osmotic pressure, which have a stimulating effect on blood circulation and improve tissue nutrition through the activation of metabolic processes. The technique is a means of pathogenetic therapy aimed at normalizing the disturbed functions of the nervous system, a significant improvement in blood circulation and local metabolism in the affected areas of the skin.

Sulfide (hydrogen sulfide) mineral waters: the mechanism of therapeutic action in drinking treatment

For drinking treatment, weakly sulfide waters are used. with the content of free hydrogen sulfide and thiosulfides 10-40 mg/l. Sulfide waters reduce gastric secretion, have a laxative and choleretic effect. Such waters tend to act as antioxidants in liver damage, and are effective in chronic occupational heavy metal poisoning. The hydrogen sulfide ion forms an insoluble complex with heavy metal ions (lead, mercury, cadmium, cobalt, nickel, copper, tin, zinc), and salts of these metals can significantly weaken their toxic effect, which helps to remove them from the body. Sulfide mineral waters have diuretic, choleretic effects. Their therapeutic effect is due to the presence of not only sulfides, free sulfur, but also thiosulfates, which are important in the correction of the immune status.

Sulfide waters are widely used in the treatment of various diseases in children. They are well tolerated by children and adolescents aged 7 to 17 years. Waters have positive changes in the functional state of the cardiovascular system, favorably affect the general and immunological reactivity and improve the general condition of sick children.

Despite the broad indications for use, specific contraindications to their use should be borne in mind.

Indications for the use of sulfide waters

The property of sulfide waters to expand both large and smallest blood vessels is used to treat patients with hypertension I and II-A stages, obliterating endarteritis, atherosclerosis of the vessels of the heart, brain and peripheral vessels of the extremities. Matsesta balneotherapy is used for myocardial dystrophy, heart defects, sclerotic changes in the heart muscle.

Contraindications are diseases with circulatory insufficiency of II degree, with prognostically unfavorable disturbances of heart rhythm and conduction.

Indicated for the treatment of polyarthritis of various origins with a chronic or subacute course, post-traumatic arthritis, chronic spondyloarthritis, spinal osteochondrosis, and Bechterew's disease. Recently, the indications have been expanded to include patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis with a low activity of the inflammatory process without lesions of the internal organs.

The Research Center for Balneology and Rehabilitation (Sochi) has developed differentiated regimens of hydrogen sulfide balneotherapy in the treatment of patients with deforming osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis with concomitant coronary heart disease.

Contraindications include cases of rheumatoid arthritis with a high activity of the inflammatory process, arthritis of tuberculous etiology and chronic osteomyelitis in the presence of abundant discharge and large sequesters, as well as irreversible changes in the joints and spine that prevent self-care and movement.

Consequences of traumatic injuries of the spinal cord and its membranes, residual effects of brain injuries, encephalopathy due to various intoxications, meningoencephalitis without the acute stage.

Recently, the indications for the treatment of atherosclerosis of the cerebral vessels without a tendency to cerebrovascular accidents and frequent vascular crises, rheumatic, brucellosis and post-influenza encephalitis and meningoencephalitis have been expanded.

Neuralgia, neuritis, polyradiculitis, plexitis of traumatic and infectious origin, vertebrogenic diseases of the peripheral nervous system, as well as other diseases of the peripheral nervous system without exacerbation.

The best results have been achieved in the treatment of patients with chronic eczema in all its forms, as well as occupational and seborrheic eczema. With psoriasis, it is necessary to take into account the seasonality of the disease: "summer" forms should be treated in winter, and "winter" - in summer. All itchy dermatoses (neurodermatitis, pruritus, chronic urticaria, pruritus, etc.), congenital dermatoses with hyperkeratosis symptoms (ichthyosis, keratoderma), scleroderma are indicated for treatment.

Chronic non-specific diseases of the female genital area in remission, tubal infertility, especially (sulfide waters are indicated for unchanged ovarian function, in the presence of hypoestrogenism). Violation of menstrual function (Due to changes in the ovaries and in the uterus after the inflammatory process).

Sulfide waters enhance the functional activity of the thyroid gland. Under the action of hydrogen sulfide, the basal metabolism also increases.

Balneotherapy with sulfide (hydrogen sulfide) waters is indicated for diseases of the thyroid gland with reduced function, impaired fat metabolism, and diabetes.

With increased thyroid function (hyperthyroidism), treatment with strong sulfide waters (such as Matsesta) is contraindicated.

Contraindications for balneotherapy with sulfide waters

In addition to general contraindications to hydrotherapy, sulfide therapy is contraindicated in patients with bronchial asthma, with advanced atherosclerosis of the vessels of the heart and brain, after repeated myocardial infarctions, in patients with a recurrent form of myocardial infarction, and also complicated in the acute period by a severe course (cardiogenic shock, severe cardiac arrhythmias), aneurysm, patients with circulatory failure greater than grade I, patients with severe frequent attacks of angina pectoris, peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum, chronic diseases of the liver and biliary tract with a tendency to exacerbate, chronic nephritis and nephrosis, diseases of the thyroid gland with symptoms of thyrotoxicosis.

In resorts with weakly sulfide waters (10 mg/l), for example, the Pyatigorsk type, contraindications to the use of sulfide baths are mainly among the diseases that preclude the use of balneotherapy.

Resorts of Russia at the sources of sulfide waters

Sulfide waters are the main natural healing factor in the Russian resorts of Bakirovo (Tatarstan), Krasnousolsk (Bashkiria), Goryachiy Klyuch, (), (Stavropol Territory,), (Perm Region), Khilovo (Pskov Region), Chuvashia (Chuvashia).

Balneotherapy with sulfide waters is used in complex spa treatment in the sanatoriums of NP Sankurtur: in the resort of Sochi in the sanatoriums "", ""; in the resort of Pyatigorsk in the sanatorium "", on

Various physiotherapy procedures, including electro-, water- and light therapy, are becoming increasingly popular. Without medical intervention, they can cure or prevent many diseases. Therefore, it is not surprising that many are interested in the harm and benefits of hydrogen sulfide (sulfide) water. This product, unique in its chemical composition and physical properties, has been known to medicine for a long time. True, disputes about its effectiveness and safety do not subside even today. According to most physiotherapists, a properly conducted and well-planned course of hydrogen sulfide baths or ingestion of water will provide a clear therapeutic effect.

What is hydrogen sulfide water?

Hydrogen sulfide water got its name from the main elements that make up its composition. It should not have a gray color, as some people think, but it can be easily distinguished by a special "soapy" texture and a characteristic smell of rotten eggs. Hydrogen sulfide has been known to mankind for many centuries. But to use it for therapeutic purposes began not so long ago.

From chemistry lessons, many people know that hydrogen sulfide is a very poisonous gas. But for medical purposes, it is used in low concentrations, which determines its medicinal properties and guarantees safety. In addition to hydrogen sulfide itself, the composition of high-quality water should include the following elements and compounds:

  • sodium chloride;
  • magnesium;

Interesting fact
Items that are exposed to hydrogen sulfide for a long time turn black. According to scientists, the Black Sea, rich in hydrogen sulfide deposits, got its name precisely for this reason.

  • bicarbonate;
  • hydrosulfides;
  • calcium ions.

Hydrogen sulfide does have a pronounced unpleasant odor. But practice shows that getting used to it is developed quite quickly. The specific aroma ceases to irritate after several procedures.

The benefits of baths with hydrogen sulfide water

The pronounced therapeutic effect of hydrogen sulfide baths is due to the fact that the healing component penetrates through the respiratory tract of a person and his skin. Three factors act simultaneously on the body:

  1. Special water temperature.
  2. Set of chemical elements.
  3. The pressure created by the fluid.

During the procedure, hydrogen sulfide penetrates the tissues, enters the bloodstream and circulates through the body. The composition is oxidized, saturates the cells with microelements and is excreted from the body.

The course of hydrotherapy with hydrogen sulfide has a versatile positive effect on the body:

  • The walls of blood vessels are strengthened, become more elastic. This provokes a decrease in high blood pressure in people suffering from hypertension.
  • There is an acceleration of metabolic processes, as a result of which the tissues are better saturated with useful components and get rid of decay products and toxins faster.

Advice
Despite the fact that hydrogen sulfide springs are not uncommon and can be found everywhere, only equipped ones should be used for medicinal purposes. Most of these are in Russia, for example, in the vicinity of Sochi.

  • Hydrogen sulfide acts as an irritant of nerve endings, which has a positive effect on the state of the central and peripheral nervous system.
  • Warm water opens the pores of the skin, hydrogen sulfide stimulates the sebaceous glands. The skin is cleared, its condition noticeably improves.
  • Hydrogen sulfide baths stimulate liver cleansing. True, if problems are noted in the work of this body, increased care should be taken in the process of recovery.
  • Healing baths are prescribed for problems with the musculoskeletal system. They have proven themselves from the best side in the treatment of inflammatory processes in women.
  • Baths from such water can be prescribed in combination with other actions aimed at treating diabetes mellitus, diseases of the digestive system.
  • Due to the fact that hydrogen sulfide normalizes metabolic processes, it can be used as one of the means of normalizing weight in obesity.

Hydrogen sulfide baths are used both for treatment and prevention for healthy people.

In any case, a physiotherapist should prescribe a course based on the state of the body. After just a few sessions, it will be possible to notice an improvement in the condition of the skin and the functioning of the joints. The body will be cleansed, which will positively affect the general condition.

Harm of hydrogen sulfide baths

Any physiotherapy procedure can be harmful if not carried out according to the rules. The concentration of the solution, the duration and number of sessions, their frequency is prescribed exclusively by the doctor. Also, the therapy has a number of contraindications:

  • Sessions are accompanied by increased stress on the heart. They should not be visited after a recent heart attack, in the presence of serious heart disease.
  • Hot water in combination with hydrogen sulfide can provoke the growth of tumors. So in the presence of neoplasms of any nature, baths are prohibited.
  • Procedures can worsen the condition during an exacerbation of systemic diseases of the liver, intestines, stomach.
  • Hydrogen sulfide baths are an energy-consuming procedure. They should not be taken after exercise or if symptoms of chronic fatigue are present.
  • Absolute contraindications to physiotherapy are the active phase of tuberculosis, any pathology of the kidneys, severe forms of hyperthyroidism, hypotension.

In addition, hydrogen sulfide is perceived differently by people, including, it can cause allergies. Therefore, even before the start of the sessions, you need to make sure that there is no negative reaction of the body to the components of sulfide water.

Is it possible to drink hydrogen sulfide water

More recently, it was believed that drinking hydrogen sulfide water is prohibited. However, the concentrations at which sulfide water has a therapeutic effect have now been established. A solution with the lowest concentration of hydrogen sulfide (10-40 mg/l) is suitable for drinking. Such a drink reduces the secretion of gastric juice, has a mild laxative and choleretic effect. At the same time, the solution also works as an antioxidant, helping to cleanse the body.

Sulfide water as a drink shows its effectiveness even with severe liver damage, poisoning with salts of heavy metals. Sometimes the solution is used as a diuretic.

Only a doctor can prescribe the use of such water. Treatment is carried out strictly under the supervision of a specialist, it is impossible to exceed the dosage. There are quite a few contraindications to the use of the solution, which is why self-medication sometimes leads to unpleasant consequences.

It should be understood that hydrogen sulfide water, like any drug, can manifest itself differently in each case. Therefore, you need to carefully monitor your condition during the physical procedure and after it.

Update: October 2018

Hydrogen sulfide bath is a balneological procedure based on the use of mineral water saturated with hydrogen sulfide. It is one of the most frequent and affordable procedures during spa treatment, rehabilitation and therapy of a number of diseases. The specificity of treatment is determined not only by the composition of the water, but also by its temperature, exposure time, and a number of others.

Hydrogen sulfide baths have strict indications and limitations, so they cannot be prescribed to everyone: all contraindications are absolute.

A bit of history

The benefits of water from hydrogen sulfide sources were first noted under Peter I. Already at the beginning of the 18th century, factories were built near Samara, whose workers bathed in Sulfur Lake, and the water from it treated various skin diseases well. This lake was located not far from the Sergievsk fortress, therefore the waters began to be called Sergievsky.

A little later, a specific effect was noted that develops in a person against the background of the use of these baths, which was called the Matsesta reaction. The name is associated with the most popular Russian resort Matsesta, located near Sochi.

Baths with water from natural hydrogen sulfide sources began to be actively used in sanatoriums that were built in places of hydrogen sulfide deposits (natural waters containing from 10 mg / l of total hydrogen sulfide are classified as hydrogen sulfide). These waters are used for baths, inhalations, irrigation, etc. In addition, many beauty salons offer this method, and using concentrates, you can go through the procedure at home.

Types of hydrogen sulfide baths

Depending on the level of hydrogen sulfide content, baths are classified into:

  • weak, with the amount of hydrogen sulfide from 10-50 mg/l;
  • medium, with the level of the active substance 50-100 mg / l;
  • strong, the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in which is 100-250 mg / l;
  • very strong, with a concentration of hydrogen sulfide from 250 mg / l.

Healing mechanisms and beneficial effects

The benefits of hydrogen sulfide baths are realized through the action of active substances. Hydrogen sulfide ions enter the body through mucous membranes, skin pores, and the respiratory system. When released into the bloodstream, free ions are oxidized and, having a certain effect, are excreted naturally through the kidneys and partially through the lungs.

The higher the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in water, the more it penetrates the body through the skin. At high concentrations of 250 mg / l and above, hydrogen sulfide begins to circulate in the blood. In addition to the irritating effect on the skin receptors, hydrogen sulfide, which is located in the blood vessels, has the same effect on the interoreceptors.

Most of the hydrogen sulfide is oxidized to sulfates, hyposulfite and other inorganic sulfur compounds. A small part of hydrogen sulfide takes part in the synthesis of organic compounds.

Hydrogen sulfide is a strong reducing agent: a natural antioxidant capable of being oxidized. Oxidation produces sulfur dioxide. Its increased concentration is dangerous for humans, but natural water contains the substance in low concentrations, which is why baths have a therapeutic effect.

Also, water from natural sources contains ions of fluorine, iodine, bromine, trace elements such as iron, barium, potassium, magnesium, gold, sodium, copper, as well as hydrocarbonates.

What happens while taking a bath?

Redness of the skin occurs 2-3 minutes after immersion in the bath. Penetrating through the skin, hydrogen sulfide affects the nerve endings localized in the walls of blood vessels. A pronounced reaction of cellular elements develops, namely mast cells that secrete active substances such as heparin, acetylcholine and histamine. Under the influence of these substances, the capillaries expand and in such an expanded state are able to place inside 1/3 of all freely circulating blood in the body. Those. blood from the internal organs, as it were, is collected under the skin, saturated with active substances and continues to circulate throughout the body. The result of vasodilation are objective sensations: a surge of heat to the skin, a slight burning sensation. The second stage of this reaction is the expansion of blood vessels located in the internal organs.

Blood microcirculation improves not only in the skin, but also in the tissues located under it, in the internal organs, cartilage, articular bags. Thus, the action of baths is associated with reflex reactions that develop in response to irritation of sensitive nerve endings located in the skin and blood vessels. And the humoral reactions transmitted by lymph and blood are also associated with the reflex action, which are included in the overall response of the body to the procedures. It turns out that the response is complex - neurohumoral and manifests itself in relation to the respiratory organs, cardiovascular system, endocrine glands, metabolism. A complex chain of reactions is implemented, involving all the main systems of the body.

It should be understood that this is a course treatment, and the maximum effect can be expected after passing all the procedures prescribed by the doctor.

Hydrogen sulfide baths:

  • activate the activity of enzymes and hormones in the body;
  • accelerate blood circulation, thereby improving the blood supply to organs. While taking baths, the minute and systolic volume of the heart improves, the speed of blood flow increases, and this is especially noticeable in patients with slow blood circulation;
  • slow down blood clotting and prevent the formation of blood clots in the vessels;
  • increase the permeability of cell membranes, improving the quality of tissue nutrition,
  • normalize blood sugar both in patients with diabetes and in healthy people with a sugar load;
  • activate metabolic processes. Hydrogen sulfide accelerates the processes of oxidation and increases the activity of sulfur-containing enzymes, helping to increase the energy resources of the myocardium. It has been proven that hydrogen sulfide affects acetylcholine and histamine metabolism by changing the activity of the corresponding enzymes (cholinesterase and histaminase) involved in metabolism;
  • improve metabolism in the heart muscle, due to which the energy of heart contractions is spent more economically;
  • increase oxygen consumption by organs and tissues;
  • increase the speed of recovery processes in damaged tissues, which contributes to the resolution of sluggish inflammatory foci;
  • improve lung ventilation;
  • improve energy and metabolic processes in the joints and skeletal muscles, which lead to a decrease in pain, inflammation; the processes of restoration of cartilaginous tissues are accelerated;
  • normalize blood pressure. The procedures align the work of the vasomotor centers by regulating the main nervous processes and normalizing vascular reactions. More significant shifts in blood pressure are observed in hypertension: there is a phase change in vascular tone in patients with this pathology. While in the bath, the pressure in such patients decreases, when leaving, it rises, and after 15-20 minutes it drops below the initial state and becomes normal or close to it;
  • normalize the pulse and rhythm of heart contractions. In the first minutes of the procedure, the pulse rate increases, and by the end of the procedure, the pulse slows down;
  • calm and relax the central nervous system, cause a slight drowsiness due to the prevalence of inhibition processes over excitation;
  • restore the disturbed balance between the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system, which regulate the activity of internal organs and metabolism;
  • improve the condition of the skin, which heals and smoothes. Its elasticity increases, allergic, inflammatory phenomena decrease or disappear;
  • stop premature aging of the body.

Indications

There is a wide range of indications for the appointment of hydrogen sulfide baths. Be sure to take into account: the concentration of hydrogen sulfide (most often, on the rise), water temperature, duration of the procedure, the possibility of combining with other types of treatment, the number of baths per course and general health, especially the activity of the pathological process, which is the main indication for treatment.

Main indications:

How are the procedures carried out

The procedure is carried out only in a specially equipped room with good ventilation and exhaust - this is a very important point to avoid poisoning with volatile hydrogen sulfide. The floor and walls are covered with special tiles, and metal parts (pipes, radiators) are painted with oil varnish. The bathroom is made of faience or concrete and covered with tiles.

How to take:

  • The air temperature is 25 C. 200 liters of water T 35-37 C are taken into the bath and the concentrate is added, bringing it to the required concentration (or water from a natural source with a predetermined concentration). The patient is immersed in the bath and takes it for 6-15 minutes. After the bath, rest for 30-40 minutes in a horizontal position.
  • The course is 10-14 baths with a frequency of 1 or 2 days. You can repeat the same course in 4-6 months.
  • Also used are half-baths, foot and multi-chamber baths for individual parts of the body, irrigation and inhalation. Local baths can be carried out up to 20 minutes at a T of water of 38 degrees, daily or every other day.

After the procedure, a slight specific smell emanates from the body, which persists for a certain period of time.

Treatment regimens

Clear treatment regimens have been developed that have already known, expected effects on the patient.

  • Weak impact (1 mode). Baths with a concentration of hydrogen sulfide 25-50 mg / l, taking 6-15 minutes, every other day. A combination with a local procedure using mineral water (irrigation, inhalation) is acceptable. They have a soft and gentle effect and do not cause sharp responses. Normalize the disturbed reactivity of the body gradually, improve metabolism and blood supply and lead to the strengthening of the defenses.
  • Moderately intense exposure (mode 2). The concentration of hydrogen sulfide is 100-150 mg/l, the exposure is 6-15 minutes, the frequency is 1-2 days. They have a versatile effect, which can be called sparingly training. Increase the functional and adaptive capabilities of the body.
  • Intense impact (3rd mode). The concentration of hydrogen sulfide - 250-350 mg/l, duration 3-10 minutes, after 1 day. A multifaceted action that causes a deep restructuring of functions, reactivity and metabolism in the body, improves blood circulation and compensatory capabilities of the body.

The indicated modes are an approximate scheme that is modified for each patient. In any regimen, treatment begins with low concentrations of hydrogen sulfide.

Hydrogen sulfide baths at home

On sale there are special compositions for conducting baths at home. But it is very important to follow all precautions and follow the instructions in order to avoid poisoning with volatile hydrogen sulfide vapors. However, it should be understood that baths have a lot of contraindications, before taking them, you should undergo an examination and exclude pathologies, diseases and conditions in which procedures cannot be taken.

Contraindications for hydrogen sulfide baths

There are a number of strict contraindications that cannot be ignored:

  • hyperthermia;
  • exacerbation of chronic pathology and the acute period of any disease;
  • pregnancy;
  • fibroids, uterine fibroids and other gynecological diseases against the background of hyperestrogenism;
  • tuberculosis;
  • chronic diseases of the liver and biliary tract;
  • all kidney diseases;
  • thyrotoxicosis;
  • tendency to bleed;
  • blood diseases;
  • recurrent myocardial infarction in history;
  • decompensated endocarditis or myocarditis;
  • angina pectoris 2 or more degrees, severe stenosis accompanying valve damage, atrial fibrillation, blockade of the conduction system of the heart, terminal stages of hypertension;
  • oncological diseases;
  • bronchial asthma;
  • tendency to allergic reactions;
  • individual intolerance.

In these conditions and diseases, hydrogen sulfide baths can only bring harm to the body: worsen the condition and lead to exacerbation and progression of pathologies.

Adverse reactions

The course of procedures leads to a significant favorable restructuring of the whole organism, but in a number of patients it is accompanied by a temporary imbalance in the functioning of various systems. This is called a balneological reaction. Main manifestations:

  • deterioration of well-being;
  • lethargy, weakness;
  • sleep disorder;
  • local rise in temperature.

There are several degrees of balneological reaction. It can be hidden, subclinical, subclinical with manifestations, of moderate severity, bordering on exacerbation and strong, which almost always leads to an exacerbation of chronic pathology.

A mild balneological reaction does not apply to pathological phenomena. But if the reaction is pronounced, it threatens to exacerbate the disease, from which, in fact, the treatment is carried out, so it should not be allowed. And here there is a very fine line - and the possibility of an acute inflammatory reaction, and its transition to an acute process can be in different patients with the same intensity of balneological procedures, i.e. the benefits and harms of treatment are actually on two scales. Therefore, it is very important to choose all the parameters of the treatment in accordance with the reactivity of the patient's body.

The most popular resorts and sanatoriums in Russia with natural hydrogen sulfide sources

Matsesta

The most famous Russian resort located near Sochi. Matsesta mineral water is distinguished by a record concentration of hydrogen sulfide over 700 mg/dm3. In addition, the climate of the resort is unique - this is the only place in Russia with humid subtropics. In a relatively small area, mineral waters with different concentrations of hydrogen sulfide are brought to the surface of the earth, which are indicated for balneotherapy.
In Sochi there is the only plant in the country for the preparation of medium-mineralized highly sulfide therapeutic mud from local freshwater silts and Matsesta strong hydrogen sulfide water. These muds have found application in the resort's sanatoriums. In addition, they are also exported to other resorts in the country in packaged form.

Hydrogen sulfide baths in the body of Mount Mashuk

These are the oldest baths in Pyatigorsk, which are formed in natural rock in places where hydrogen sulfide sources come to the surface of the earth. These baths have long been a source of health for the local population. The people spoke of them as "shameless" or "Yermolov's" baths. They still exist today: modern bathroom buildings were built above them, where patients from all over the world come for treatment.

Resort "Sergievsky Mineralnye Vody"

located in the Samara region, or rather, in the steppe part of the Samara Trans-Volga region. There are multi-debit sources of hydrogen sulfide waters, which have no analogues on the territory of the Russian Federation. These are low-mineralized hydrocarbonate-sulfate magnesium-calcium waters, the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in which is 50-100 mg/dm 3 . The resort is also rich in lake-key medium sulphide mud.

Resort "Ust-Kachka" is located in Perm Krai

It is rich in natural iodine-bromine and hydrogen sulfide waters, which are extracted from a well depth of 200-500 m. Hydrogen sulfide water belongs to 2 groups: brine with a concentration of H2S and HS 76 g / dm 3 and very strong (301 mg / dm 3). Used for baths, as well as irrigation for the gums and scalp.
The history of the resort is interesting - hydrogen sulfide mineral waters were accidentally discovered in 1935 during geological exploration, when healing water was extracted from the Glavneft well. Its composition turned out to be close in composition to the sources of Matsesta, and after a while a health resort was built here.

Balneo-mud resort "Usolye" is located in the Irkutsk region

The natural water deposit is unique both in its composition and in its formation. Usolsky waters are saturated with bromine, chlorine and sodium, iodine, silicic acid, potassium, manganese and hydrogen sulfide. Water, flowing through underground labyrinths, washes the rocks and is saturated with useful minerals, salts, gases, acquires healing value, and comes to the surface in the form of springs and springs with the help of natural pressure. Those. sources are natural in all respects.

Hydrogen sulfide baths in Abkhazia

On the territory of Abasia there are many natural sources of mineral waters with hydrogen sulfide, which are popular.

  • Famous thermal springs are located in Kyndyga, the water from which has T +110 C at the outlet, flows down the mountain, cools down to a comfortable temperature and enters special distribution troughs, under which you can take a kind of healing shower.
  • Besletka is a river located on the edge of Sukhumi. It is here that 7 wells were drilled, from where warm waters are extracted with a temperature of +29 to +42 and enter special baths.
  • The hydrogen sulfide source in Gagra contains about 44.2 mg/l of hydrogen sulfide, the outlet water temperature reaches +43 C.
  • The hydrogen sulfide springs in the village of Primorsky are a modern small complex where, in addition to water treatment, you can also take procedures with healing mud.

Some patients are wondering if it is possible to take hydrogen sulfide baths if they are intolerant to the specific smell of hydrogen sulfide? If this condition is not associated with an allergy to the substance, then some discomfort can be tolerated, for example, by using a special nose clip during the procedure.

Hydrogen sulfide baths are widely used in balneology. Such baths help to cope with many diseases, having a positive effect on the blood vessels, heart, metabolic processes and the human nervous system. Hydrogen sulfide baths, depending on the concentration of the solution, i.e. on the amount of hydrogen sulfide dissolved in water, have a strong effect on the body, which is provided by a number of factors.

First, hydrostatic water pressure and temperature. Secondly, getting through the human skin, sulfides have an irritating effect on the nerve endings, which allows you to activate the work of all organs and systems of the human body.

Such baths are often prescribed by doctors in spa treatment. It is not recommended to use them at home. Why, as well as indications and contraindications of hydrogen sulfide baths, find out in this article.

Hydrogen sulfide bath indications

The healing effect of hydrogen sulfide baths has been noticed for a long time. The oldest known source of such mineral waters is Matsesta, located near Sochi. Despite the prevalence of the use of these baths for treatment, many people do not know what diseases they are prescribed for.

Hydrogen sulfide baths can be prescribed both independently and in addition to the main treatment. Indications for the appointment are diseases:

Of cardio-vascular system;

Musculoskeletal system;

Hydrogen sulfide baths have a positive effect on the thyroid gland with reduced function, in violation of fat metabolism, diabetes mellitus.

Occupational diseases, such as vibration disease and chronic poisoning with salts of heavy metals, may be an indication for the appointment.

Hydrogen sulfide baths benefit

Hydrogen sulfide, which is contained in water, activates metabolic processes in the human body, improves regeneration processes, increases blood flow to all organs and tissues. Due to the increase in blood circulation, the flow of oxygen increases, blood pressure normalizes.

Taking hydrogen sulfide baths has a calming effect, which is useful for a shattered nervous system, for people with neurasthenia, constant anxiety. After baths, sleep normalizes, mood improves.

When exposed to hydrogen sulfide water, a pleasant warmth is felt that irritates and warms the skin, biologically active elements are formed that contribute to the expansion of capillaries and small blood vessels, inflammation and pain decrease, and joint mobility improves.

Hydrogen sulfide baths have on the body:

Anti-inflammatory;

Regenerating;

Immunomodulatory;

Sedative

Effect. Especially such baths are useful for people with various vascular diseases, with a tendency to thrombosis, increased blood clotting.

Hydrogen sulfide baths how to take

Hydrogen sulfide mineral water is natural water containing more than 10 mg per liter of total hydrogen sulfide. Depending on the concentration of hydrogen sulfide emit:

Low concentrated water with the content of the main substance from 10 to 50 mg per liter;

Medium concentration with hydrogen sulfide content from 50 to 100 mg per liter;

Solid (as salt) containing 100 to 250 mg hydrogen sulfide per litre;

Highly concentrated salt - the content of hydrogen sulfide is more than 250 mg per liter.

In most cases, except for places where there are natural sources of such water, it is carried out using hydrogen sulfide salt or the composition is prepared independently.

The procedure for preparing an artificial hydrogen sulfide bath is as follows. Hydrochloric acid is mixed with sodium sulfide and then sodium bicarbonate and common table salt (sodium chloride) are added to this solution. It should be noted that free hydrogen sulfide is highly reactive and it can be dangerous to prepare a solution on your own.

The methodology for conducting hydrogen sulfide baths differs little from the methodology for conducting any water procedure. But there are some features.

First, the bath is filled with ordinary hot water (200 liters), in which all the necessary chemical components are dissolved in strict sequence.

After dissolution, the bath is topped up with cold water until its temperature is about 35-37 degrees. After that, the patient is immersed in the bath.

The duration of the bath is from 8 to 12 minutes and is prescribed by the attending physician. After taking the body, you just need to wrap it in a sheet or towel, without rubbing the body.

A rest of half an hour to two hours is required.

The number of procedures, as well as the concentration of hydrogen sulfide, is prescribed by a doctor and depends on the disease and the individual characteristics of the patient. As a rule, the course of treatment can be from 11 to 14-15 baths, which are taken every other day or two days, rest on the third. A second course of treatment can be carried out no earlier than after four or six months.

In most cases, hydrogen sulfide baths are combined with other types of baths: carbonic acid or sodium chloride.

In addition to baths, a hydrogen sulfide mineral bath is used for irrigation in gynecological diseases, oral cavity and nose, in the form of inhalations, douches, enemas.

What are the benefits of hydrogen sulfide baths

The first sign of the action of hydrogen sulfide is warmth and redness of the skin. At this time, irritation of the nerve endings occurs and the blood flow is activated, and then all internal organs and systems.

But outwardly, we can only see reddening of the skin. It can swell, opening the sebaceous glands and pores through which harmful substances are removed. due to warming up and improved circulation, histamine, serotonin and other active substances are released.

Hydrogen sulfide baths at home

At home, for hydrogen sulfide baths, you need to buy a special salt containing hydrogen sulfide. Do not try to prepare the solution yourself. First, you need to know the proportions of the original components. Secondly, it is dangerous to health. Hydrogen sulfide is a volatile substance and can be poisoned when urgent hospitalization is required.

Before deciding on the use of baths at home, you need to consult a doctor about the advisability of using. For them there are contraindications, and moreover, very serious ones. The doctor must not only allow the use, but also prescribe the concentration, duration of the bath and the number of baths.

When prescribing a highly concentrated solution, a patient may experience side effects in the form of:

Weaknesses;

dizziness;

Heart rhythm disturbances;

breathing problems;

orientation disorder.

In this case, the procedure should be stopped immediately, get out of the bath and breathe fresh air. Subsequent treatments should be used at a lower concentration.

Sometimes allergic reactions or individual intolerance can be observed. In such cases, bathing is strictly prohibited.

Taking baths at home is no different from taking baths in a sanatorium. To do this, you need to fill the bath with hot water with a temperature of 35-37 degrees. Dissolve salt in it. As a rule, one liter of water requires 20 to 50 milligrams. But first of all, you must strictly adhere to the recommendations of the doctor and the instructions for the drug.

It is forbidden to take baths earlier than 2 hours before meals and after meals. You can not take baths with great physical exertion, while on a special diet, starvation. Be sure to tell the doctor about such nuances.

After the bath, you need to rest for at least half an hour.

It is also forbidden to drink alcohol, smoking, so as not to expose the internal organs to a large load.

After the first baths, an exacerbation of chronic diseases can sometimes occur. Be sure to tell your doctor about this. In most cases, the course of treatment can be continued, while reducing the concentration of the solution. After a full course, the condition may improve markedly.

Which sanatoriums have hydrogen sulfide baths

Artificial hydrogen sulfide baths can be obtained in many sanatoriums. The most famous natural sources of mineral hydrogen sulfide water in Russia are Matsesta in the Krasnodar Territory. There are such sources in the Saratov region, Sernovodsk, Pyatigorsk, Ust-Kachka, Perm region.

There are hydrogen sulfide sources in other countries. The most famous is Baden-Baden, located in Austria.

In the Czech Republic, you can get treatment at the Piešťany resort. In France - Aix-les-Bains and Dax. In Italy - in the resort of Sirmione. And who wants to sunbathe and get treatment, you can go to California in Palm Springs, where it's always summer.

Hydrogen sulfide baths contraindications

First of all, you need to know that hydrogen sulfide evaporates easily and can cause poisoning when released in high concentrations.

There are a number of contraindications when treatment with such baths can do more harm to health than good.

It is forbidden to take them to children.

It is impossible to carry out treatment with an exacerbation of any disease, even when they are indicated.

Baths are contraindicated for:

Liver diseases;

kidney disease;

Disease of the biliary tract;

Diseases of the urinary system;

tuberculosis;

Bronchial asthma;

Hyperthyroidism;

angina pectoris;

heart failure;

Violation of the heart rhythm;

Irreversible processes in the joints and spine;

epilepsy and seizures;

Severe form of atherosclerosis of cerebral vessels.

Before starting the course, you need to consult a doctor to make sure that there are no contraindications. Especially the elderly, who may have a whole list of age-related chronic diseases.

However, indications and contraindications for hydrogen sulfide baths, despite all their positive properties, are the same as for other medical procedures.

Hydrogen sulfide in water is a natural antioxidant that is able to quickly restore all organs and systems. Penetrating through the skin, ions, trace elements and other nutrients in its composition, actively saturate every cell inside the body. Therefore, the benefits of hydrogen sulfide baths are invaluable.

In addition to the therapeutic effect, hydrogen sulfide water is successfully used for cosmetic purposes. It perfectly smoothes fine wrinkles on the face, gives the skin elasticity, eliminates allergic, inflammatory reactions and gives a healthy look in general.

You can also drink hydrogen sulfide water, but it is recommended to do this only under the supervision of a doctor. Otherwise, you risk harming your body. Contraindications for sulfide baths

As you already know, treatment with hydrogen sulfide baths has a number of contraindications. They are appointed only after a medical examination and passing some tests. Sometimes a person may not even think about the presence of a particular disease, so the examination is first of all, since the expected benefits and harms of a hydrogen sulfide bath can ultimately overlap each other.

Baths with sulfide acid should not be taken under the following conditions:

  1. pathologies of the kidneys, liver;
  2. pulmonary tuberculosis;
  3. heart disease;
  4. diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;
  5. cancers;
  6. various kinds of bleeding;
  7. reduced pressure;
  8. high temperature;
  9. inflammatory and viral diseases;
  10. hemorrhoids;
  11. III degree of diabetes;
  12. vein diseases;

Remember that you can not make hasty independent decisions about the passage of a particular medical procedure. Not always what turned out to be useful for your girlfriend, neighbor or close relative will also work for you without negative health consequences. And the advertisements of newfangled salons, full of calls to improve your health with the help of another new product, are always silent about contraindications to hydrogen sulfide baths, however, as well as to any other procedure. Take such information as no more than a call for thought, and not as a competent solution to the problem. Seek appointment only from a specialist. And only after the prescribed course, proceed to its passage.
