Lev Nikolayevich was born in 1828 into a large noble family. He lost his parents early. He was raised by a distant relative.

At that time there were very few schools in Russia, and there were none at all in the villages. The children of poor people could not learn. Leo Tolstoy decided to open a school for peasant children in his estate Yasnaya Polyana.
