excipients: sodium benzoate, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, sorbitol 70% (E420), glycerol, magnesium aluminum silicate, polysorbate 80, povidone, apricot flavor, antifoam, citric acid, sodium hydroxide, purified water up to 15 ml.

Description

Suspension of light yellow color with a characteristic odor.

Pharmacotherapeutic group

Anthelmintic drugs, a derivative of tetrahydropyrimidine.

The codeATX:Р02СС01

Pharmacological properties

The drug is used primarily for infections with pinworms. (Enterobius vermicularis) and roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides).

Can be used for hookworm infection; more effective in treating duodenal hookworm infections (Ancylostoma duodenale), than the American hookworm (Necator americanus).

After oral administration, the drug is poorly absorbed from the digestive tract. After oral administration, it reaches very low plasma concentrations, at the limit of detection. After taking a single dose of the drug at 11 mg/kg body weight, the maximum plasma concentration achieved after 1-5 hours (Tmax) ranged from 0 µg/ml to 0.1 µg/ml.

There are no data on the penetration of the drug through the placenta and into the milk of a nursing woman. The minimum amount of the drug resorbed from the digestive tract is partially metabolized in the liver to N-methyl-1,3-propanediamine.

About 93% of an oral dose of the drug is excreted unchanged in the feces and no more than 7% is excreted in the urine in unchanged form or in the form of metabolites.

If you are not sorry to stuff your child with chemical synthetic compounds, then this article is just for you.

Drug Pirantel is available in suspension and is used for children as a means of expelling worms.

Below you can read the instructions for use, set out "in your own words."

How does it work?

Suspension Pirantel it is also convenient because it does not require any special preparation of the child for its reception, and the worms do not move through the intestines so quickly, which makes the effect of the drug softer. By the way, after using the drug, no additional manipulations are required for the final removal of paralyzed worms from the intestines. At least that's what the instructions say.

Parents should be aware that the active substance of Pirantel is absorbed into the blood and decomposed in the liver. Draw your own conclusions.

When do doctors prescribe Pirantel suspension to children?

Small children often mess around in sand and earth, and from dirty hands, helminths very easily enter their bodies. Therefore, it is not surprising that it is in childhood that infection with worms occurs most often. Pirantel is recommended for getting rid of round worms, that is, for the treatment of enterobiasis, ankylostomiasis, necatoriasis and ascariasis. To avoid re-infection, all family members should be treated at the same time as the child. In addition, you need to periodically carry out wet cleaning and cleaning of all clothes.

The effectiveness of Pirantel in trichocephalosis is not so pronounced (the causative agent is whipworm).

Contraindications for use

As for the contraindications to the use of the suspension by children, it must be said here that the instructions for use prohibit its use in case of severe damage to the nervous system with an increase in muscle weakness, with individual intolerance to the drug and at the age of up to 6 months.

Dosage

Pirantel suspension should be given to children immediately after or during meals 1 time per day. The dosage is calculated individually, based on the age and weight of the child.

Usually prescribed once 10 mg per kilogram of the child's weight. It turns out that if the child weighs less than 75 kg, then the standard dose is 750 mg, or 3 scoops of the suspension (15 mg). If the weight is greater, then the dose is increased to 1000 mg, or 4 scoops of the suspension (20 mg).

Very young children 1.5-2 years old should be given 125 mg of suspension, or half a spoonful (2.5 mg); children 2-6 years old - 250 mg, or 1 scoop (5 ml); children 6-12 years old - 500 mg, or 2 scoops (10 ml).

If the doctor has diagnosed ankylostomiasis, he usually prescribes the same dose, but you need to drink for three days in a row. If the diagnosis necatorosis- the dose is doubled and the course of administration continues for 2 days.

The instruction also warns that it is impossible to take Pirantel and another antihelminthic drug, for example, Decaris, at the same time. The instructions also list side effects from taking Pirantel.

Instructions for use for Pirantel suspension for children contain basic information regarding the effective and safe use of this anthelmintic drug in the treatment of young patients. How to give Pirantel to a child? What are the indications and contraindications? What adverse reactions can provoke this drug and its analogues?

Pirantel is produced in the following forms:

  1. Tablets (intended for adult patients).
  2. Suspension (suitable even for newborn babies).

As a rule, a tablet preparation for combating helminths in young patients is not used, and the suspension has a milder effect and does not require special preparation of the baby to take the drug.

The description indicates that this medication has not only therapeutic, but also preventive properties. Tablets can be prescribed to small patients over 2 years of age, but they should be used with extreme caution and only on the advice of a qualified pediatrician.

Children's Pirantel is designed specifically for young patients. The drug acts more gently, as a result of which the helminths move along the gastrointestinal tract more slowly. In addition, the suspension can be given to children from the first months of their life, while the drug in tablet form must be chewed, so it is unsuitable for infants.

When are they assigned?

  1. Ascariasis.
  2. Necatorosis.
  3. Enterobioses.
  4. Ankylostomiasis.
  5. Trichocephalosis.

Helminthiases are often accompanied by characteristic symptoms. Therefore, it is possible to give Pirantel from worms for children in case of manifestation of painful symptoms, such as:

  • nausea;
  • bouts of vomiting;
  • bronchitis;
  • permanent lack of appetite;
  • pain in the abdomen;
  • drastic weight loss.

If a child has problems with appetite, he becomes moody, sleeps poorly and grinds his teeth in a dream, then this may indicate the presence of helminthiasis. In this case, Pirantel or its analogues may be recommended. In addition, this medication can be used for prophylactic purposes.

When is it contraindicated?

According to experts, Pirantel in the form of a suspension is not recommended for giving to a child if there are the following contraindications:

  1. Individual intolerance and hypersensitivity to active substances.
  2. Violations in the functioning of the nervous system, accompanied by muscle weakness.
  3. Liver failure.

An appropriate indication from a qualified pediatrician is also required in order to give a suspension to babies who have not reached six months of age.

Tablets are contraindicated in small patients under the age of 2 years, as well as children with the following health problems:

  • hepatic pathologies;
  • increased susceptibility to allergic reactions;
  • myasthenia.

Before starting a therapeutic course, it is imperative to consult with a pediatrician to identify possible limitations and contraindications to the use of Pirantel in the baby.

What adverse reactions can cause?

Reviews of doctors and parents of young patients indicate that in most cases Pirantel is well tolerated by the children's body. Sometimes during the therapeutic course, side effects of the drug may occur:

  • nausea;
  • bouts of vomiting;
  • general weakness of the body;
  • bouts of dizziness;
  • headache;
  • sleep disorders;
  • the appearance of skin rashes of an allergic nature;
  • drowsiness during the daytime;
  • increase in body temperature;
  • diarrhea;
  • hives.

About overdose

The optimal dose of Pirantel should be calculated by a specialist on an individual basis, taking into account the age category of the baby and his body weight. Otherwise, there is a high chance of an overdose. In large quantities, Pirantel and its analogues can cause the following painful symptoms in babies:

  • nausea;
  • diarrhea;
  • bouts of vomiting;
  • stomach upset;
  • lack of appetite.

Cases of severe poisoning are possible if an excessively large amount of syrup is taken. In such situations, small patients do gastric lavage and prescribe activated charcoal.

How to take Pirantel for children, what dosage is needed, the attending physician will tell you. Preliminary consultation with a specialist will help to avoid accidental overdose and the development of other undesirable reactions.

Features of the use of suspension and tablets

How many days should the therapeutic course last? This question interests many parents. Pediatric specialists recommend continuing treatment for 1 or 2 days. If necessary, the therapeutic course can be repeated after a mandatory 3-week break.

Pirantel for prevention is usually taken 1 time per day. It is recommended to give the baby a suspension during a meal or immediately after the child eats.

During the therapeutic course, it is not advised to use enterosorbents and antihistamines, since they significantly reduce the effectiveness of anthelmintic drugs.

Pirantel tablets are allowed to be prescribed to babies from the age of 2 years. However, many experts do not recommend using them for the treatment of children under 6 years of age. This is due to the fact that the tablets must be thoroughly chewed before swallowing, and a small child may simply accidentally choke on the medicine. In addition, the product does not have a very pleasant taste, and getting the baby to chew it and then swallow it can be very problematic.

The daily dosage of Pirantel tablets for small patients is calculated by the attending physician, taking into account the age category, body weight and individual characteristics of the child.

How often can babies take Pirantel? This question worries many parents of young patients. The answer to it depends on the indications for the use of the drug. So, for preventive purposes, Pirantel is recommended for babies to give no more than 1 time per year.

For medicinal purposes, in case of manifestation of characteristic symptoms, the drug is taken as prescribed by the doctor. A repeated prophylactic course can be carried out no earlier than after a six-month break.

In diseases such as enterobiasis or ascariasis, therapy is advised to be repeated 3 weeks after the completion of the main treatment course. Therefore, only a qualified specialist on an individual basis can accurately answer questions regarding the frequency of taking this anthelmintic agent.

Pirantel is an effective anthelmintic drug, one of the few approved for the treatment of the smallest patients. Most parents are interested in what can replace Pirantel if necessary? Doctors distinguish the following acceptable analogues:

  1. Decaris.
  2. Nemocide.
  3. Helmintox.

Pirantel for children is an effective and safe remedy in the fight against helminthic invasion. Treat the baby with Pirantel should be prescribed by a doctor, strictly following the recommendations of a specialist regarding the dosage and duration of the therapeutic course.

Reviews about the drug

Anastasia, 25 years old

Irina, 22 years old

When my son got worms, according to the doctor's prescription, they began to give him Pirantel syrup. The effect was positive, but during the treatment the baby felt bad: he felt sick, his stomach ached, his temperature rose. This condition lasted for a couple of days, then passed. The doctor said that this was due to the process of cleansing the body of worms.

Inna, 30 years old

Mom with two children. The eldest son is 8 years old, the youngest is 5 months old. During the medical examination, it turned out that both boys were infected with worms. The pediatrician advised Pirantel and helped to calculate the safe dosage for children. Very satisfied with the drug. Now we take it with the whole family for prevention.

    P.S. Only now I myself am from the city and did not find it in pharmacies, I ordered it via the Internet.

    Rita, you seem to have fallen from the moon. In pharmacies - grabbers and even want to make money on it! And what kind of divorce can there be if payment after receipt and one package can be received free of charge? For example, I ordered this TOXIMIN once - the courier brought me, I checked everything, looked and only then paid. At the post office - the same thing, there is also a payment upon receipt. And now everything is sold on the Internet - from clothes and shoes to appliances and furniture.
