The most detailed description: holy water how to use prayer - for our readers and subscribers.

Holy Water Prayer- this is the greatest prayer that flows from the lips of an Orthodox Christian.

Holy Water is the greatest church shrine. Holy water represents God's grace. Its main qualities - it cleanses, sanctifies and strengthens. That's why holy water prayer also has cleansing, sanctifying and strengthening qualities.

For the first time, an Orthodox person is immersed in holy water at baptism, when the baby is dipped into the font.

Holy water is an obligatory element of the rite during the consecration of buildings, machines, objects. Parishioners are sprinkled with holy water during prayer services.

On the day of the Epiphany, every Orthodox Christian brings home a vessel with holy water, carefully keeps it as the greatest shrine, with holy water prayer partake of sickness and every kind of infirmity.

Holy water prayer

Lord my God, may Your holy gift be: prosphora and Your holy water for the remission of my sins, for the enlightenment of my mind, for the strengthening of my spiritual and bodily strength, for the health of my soul and body, for the subjugation of my passions and infirmities through Your boundless mercy the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother and all Your saints. Amen.

The beginning of the world is water, and the beginning of the Gospel is the Jordan. A sensible light shone from the water, for the Spirit of God hovered over the top of the water and commanded light to shine out of the darkness. The light of the Holy Gospel shone from the Jordan, for, as the holy evangelist writes, “from that time,” that is, from the time of Baptism, Jesus began to preach and say: Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand (Matthew 4:17). By His baptism, Jesus Christ “drowned the sins of the whole world in the waters of the Jordan”, sanctified the water nature.

Even in its natural state - as a gift from God - holy water has some healing properties. So, for example, the spring cut from the rock by Moses spouted, of course, not ordinary water, but special water. Not simple was the water in the Source of the Samaritan, dug out by the forefather Jacob and consecrated by the conversation of the Savior near him. Not ordinary water, according to Christians from ancient times to the present, in the Jordan River, sanctified by the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, who was baptized in these waters ...

You have an excellent site. Keep promoting it and I am sure that in a year the number of positive reviews in your guestbook will increase dramatically. Good luck! Alexey (Tver)

I want to say special thanks for the article “To the holy Jordan through minefields ..”! A low bow for her, as if she herself had visited the holy Jordan and saw pigeons circling over the holy river, heard the smell of meadow grasses and felt the bitterness of the Dead Sea. Thank you. This is a real gift for a great holiday. Happy feast of the Holy Baptism of the Lord, our dear Orthodox. Ekaterina (Berlin)

On drinking holy water

THE HOLY WATER, SACRED BY THE SMALL CHARACTER,

which happens at all prayers and holidays (except for Baptism). Epiphany water is different from other holy water and is called a great shrine.

There are many cases of getting rid of ailments with the help of holy water. Its healing properties are not denied by medicine. But how to use holy water in everyday life?

  • Holy water should be drunk in the morning on an empty stomach or in the evening before going to bed (but not from a common container).
  • With a very serious illness or if a person is in a state of intense spiritual struggle, despondency, it can be drunk in unlimited quantities, regardless of food intake.
  • After drinking, you need to pray for healing.
  • For pain or just a sore spot, you can apply a compress moistened with holy water.
  • It is customary to use holy water with prayer:

“Lord, my God, may Your holy gift and Your holy water be for the remission of my sins, for the enlightenment of my mind, for the strengthening of my spiritual and bodily strength, for the health of my soul and body, for the subjugation of my passions and infirmities through Your boundless mercy the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother and all Your saints. Amen."

  • Holy water has tremendous healing power. There are cases when a few drops of such water, poured into the mouth of an unconscious patient, brought him to his senses and changed the course of the disease. But that doesn't mean you don't need to see a doctor. A special property of holy water is that, added even in a small amount to ordinary water, it imparts beneficial properties to it.
  • It is necessary to store holy water at the icon or behind the icon. Just please write on the bottle or stick on the appropriate label. Be careful that your loved ones inadvertently do not pour out holy water, or do not use it reverently. You can not store such water in the refrigerator. Do not keep it near food.
  • This water is not given to animals.
  • You can only sprinkle it on your home (while reading a prayer), a car, or some other thing, also clothes, and even pets.
  • If the water has deteriorated, it must be poured into a river or other natural source. Holy water must not be poured down the sink or drain. Holy water is not thrown on the ground. It is poured into an "impregnable" place, that is, into a place where people do not walk ( do not trample feet) and dogs do not run. You can pour water into the river, you can into a flower pot, you can into a clean place under a tree.

HOLY WATER IS NECESSARY NOT ONLY TO KEEP CAREFULLY, BUT ALSO USE REGULARLY.

  • Eternal storage of water "in reserve" is unacceptable if it was brought to their church once for Baptism according to the principle "to be in the house, because everyone has it." This is a kind of confinement of the shrine. The grace of holy water does not decrease, no matter how much it is stored, but people who do not turn to the shrine rob themselves.
  • Once blessed water is always like that. In the case when we have little holy water left, but we need some significant amount, we can add holy water to ordinary water. All water will be sanctified.

Finally, the most important:

Holy water will not bring us any benefit if we spend our lives away from God. If we want to feel God in our lives, to feel His help, His participation in our affairs, we must become Christians not only in name, but also in essence.

Being a Christian means:

Fulfill the commandments of God, love God and neighbors;

Participate in Church Sacraments and pray at home;

Work on fixing your soul.

EVERYTHING ABOUT BAPTIC WATER

Epiphany water - Agiasma - water in which God Himself is present

This is a church shrine, with which the grace of God came into contact, and which is required.

What exactly is the power of Epiphany water, where does it come from and how to handle it. Here we answer the most popular questions.

According to the results of a series of experiments by scientists that were carried out over two years, it can be seen that the values of the optical density of water from the Jordan River, where Jesus Christ was baptized, are practically.

In our time, the “silver” theory has quietly been replaced by the “energy” one.

With this, the Church puts a limit to the spread of sinful impurities, prevents the multiplication of the disastrous consequences of our sins.

On Epiphany, on January 19, a miracle happens every year on the Jordan River. + video

This action is followed by a great number of visitors: therefore, there is a colossal number of eyewitnesses who saw with their own eyes how the waters.

Encounter with a shrine

At the end of the prayers, our hostess bowed several times, and then took out a bottle from the bedside table standing under the icons, poured something into a small glass, crossed herself, and drank.

This stack did not fit into my grandmother's morning action. No, we didn't think it was something alcoholic, but still a curiosity.

Prayer for the adoption of holy prosphora and water

Good time of the day Everyone! We will be glad to see you on our video channel in YouTube Video channel. Subscribe to the channel, watch the video.

God's grace extends to people through various attributes, icons, prayer books, church utensils. Gracious energy can be obtained through prayers for the adoption of prosphora and holy water, which form a single whole.

Special bread is prepared in the bakery at the church and the baking conditions and composition are strictly observed. Such work is entrusted only to pious people.

Conditions for taking prosphora and consecrated water

There are some rules in Orthodoxy on how to perform the ceremony of taking blessed water and prosphora:

  • Prayer before taking the prosphora is read on an empty stomach and washed down with consecrated water, which is used for various spiritual and physical illnesses.
  • The ceremony is always carried out before the main meal of other food, water must be poured from the dishes into a glass or cup.
  • On the eve of Holy Communion, they do not eat prosphora.
  • It is impossible to treat and give prosphora to unbaptized people.
  • The very use of holy water will be useless. They drink it after a prayer with a request to send mental and physical strength, then they ask for health. This should be understood not only as deliverance from illnesses, but also from sinfulness, because according to the canons of the church, it is for them that suffering and illness are sent.
  • They end with a prayer request to get rid of addictions, spiritual and physical weakness.

The text of the prayer before taking the prosphora:

Lord, my God, let there be Your holy gift (prosphora) and

Your holy water for the remission of my sins, for the enlightenment of my mind,

To strengthen my mental and bodily strength, for the health of my soul and body,

In the subjugation of my passions and infirmities through infinite mercy

Yours with the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother and all Your saints. Amen.

Then they eat antidoron and drink blessed water with prayer words.

The meaning of prosphora

The origin of the antidoron has deep roots and means from the Greek language “donation”, which was carried to prayer services. Such offerings as bread, wine, oil, candles were taken by the deacons. Then the people who offered food and wax were mentioned in prayers during the consecration of food. Prosphora was the name given to the bread used during services. Then they began to cook bread the way they are now in churches.

The prosphora consists of two parts:

  • one part at the top with a unique seal of church symbols, the bottom one looks like a small loaf of bread;
  • the lower part of the bread personifies the origin of man, and the upper spiritual human essence.

The value of prosphora is greater than that of an ordinary product. The products that are used in cooking also have a symbolic meaning. Yeast and consecrated water are a symbol of the human soul, and liquid with flour of the physical body.

Five antidorons are needed for divine services, one for communion, another in the name of the Mother of God, the third for the angelic order, the fourth for health, the fifth for repose.

To get prosphora, you need to order Sorokoust "For health" or "For peace" after the service. Pieces are taken for the names that are written in the note. A small piece of antidoron is used in the church during the Bright Week. They eat it with diseases and special cases with the words "Christ is Risen." Artos - a whole prosphora is given after the end of Easter services.

The meaning of holy water

Few people know about the existence of two types of consecrated water. One view, which takes place every Sunday in the church, the other only on Christmas Eve and on the feast of Epiphany on January 19th. The water that has received consecration is called agiasma.

To bless the water, the priest lowers the cross into the water three times with prayers. As a result, she is endowed with divine energy. After baptism, the shrine is collected and brought home, it does not deteriorate all year, it personifies divine power, and it is cherished as a shrine. It has sacred qualities and clears the mind of negative thoughts, strengthens the soul and body. They sprinkle housing with it, give it to wash with the evil eye, damage, drive away evil power. Such water is also used in the consecration of churches, apartments, cars, icons, household items.

A three-time immersion on the feast of Epiphany washes away sinful evil spirits and brings one closer to the Lord. Water is used for consecration, prayer and procession. The church preaches that hagiasma is the embodiment of spiritual life that connects heaven and earth.

Saint Dmitry of Kherson pointed out the healing properties of water, Seraphim of Sarov gave it to pilgrims, Ambrose of Optina treated, Seraphim of Vyrinsky advised to use it in case of illness.

Prayer for the tasting of prosphora and holy water makes a person virtuous, illuminates for the service of the Lord and drives away the forces of the devil.

Prayer for the adoption of prosphora and holy water

Lord my God, may Your holy gift and Your holy water be for the remission of my sins, for the enlightenment of my mind, for the strengthening of my spiritual and bodily strength, for the health of my soul and body, for the subjugation of my passions and infirmities through Your boundless mercy with the prayers of the Cleansing Your Mother and all Your saints. On the use of holy water

All our life next to us is a great shrine - holy water.

Consecrated water is an image of the grace of God: it cleanses believers from spiritual filth, sanctifies and strengthens them for the feat of salvation in God.

We first plunge into it in baptism, when, while receiving this sacrament, we are immersed three times in a font filled with holy water. Holy water in the sacrament of baptism washes away the sinful impurities of a person, renews and regenerates him into a new life in Christ. Holy water is necessarily present at the consecration of churches and all objects used in worship, at the consecration of residential buildings, buildings, and any household item.

We are sprinkled with holy water in religious processions, during prayer services.

On the day of Theophany, every Orthodox Christian brings home a vessel with holy water, carefully keeps it as the greatest shrine, praying to partake of holy water in sickness and all kinds of infirmity.

Epiphany water, like Holy Communion, is taken by believers only on an empty stomach. “Consecrated water,” as St. Demetrius of Kherson wrote, “has the power to sanctify the souls and bodies of all who use it.” She, acceptable with faith and prayer, heals our bodily diseases.

Holy water extinguishes the flame of passions, drives away evil spirits - that is why they sprinkle the Dwelling and every thing that is consecrated with holy water.

The Monk Seraphim, after the confession of the pilgrims, always gave them to eat from the cup of holy Epiphany water.

The Monk Ambrose sent a bottle of holy water to the terminally ill, and the incurable disease, to the amazement of the doctors, passed away.

Elder Hieroschemamonk Seraphim Vyritsky always advised to sprinkle food and food itself with Jordanian (Epiphany) water, which, in his words, "consecrates everything by itself."

When someone was very ill, Elder Seraphim blessed to take a tablespoon of consecrated water every hour. The elder said that there is no stronger medicine than holy water and consecrated oil.

How was water blessed for the first time?

The consecration of water was accepted by the Church from the apostles and their successors. But the first example was given by the Lord Himself, when He plunged into the Jordan and sanctified the whole nature of water.

Not always water needed consecration. There were times when everything on earth was pure and holy.

“And God saw everything that He had created,” says the book of Genesis, “very good” (Genesis 1:31). Then, before the fall of man, everything was created by the Word of God, everything was made alive by the Holy Spirit, which hovered over the water. Everything on earth was sealed with the all-sanctifying blessing of God, and therefore all earthly elements served for the benefit of man: they supported life, protected the body from destruction. Living in this harmonious, heavenly environment, man, according to God's promise, had to be immortal, for "God did not create death" (Wisdom 1, 13).

But man himself, through communion with an unclean spirit, received the seed of uncleanness into his soul. And then the Spirit of God departed from the unclean creature: “And the Lord [God] said: It is not forever for my Spirit to be neglected by people [these], because they are flesh” (Genesis 6:3).

Now everything that the hands of sinners touched became unclean, everything became an instrument of sin, and therefore was deprived of God's blessing and was subjected to a curse. The elements that previously served man have changed. The earth now brings thorns and thistles, the smoldering air becomes dangerous and sometimes deadly. Water, having become a drain of sewage, became contagious, dangerous, and now, in the hands of the Justice of God, it began to act as an instrument of punishment for the wicked.

But this does not mean that humanity was deprived of holy water. The spring that Moses brought out of the rock spouted, of course, not ordinary water, but special water. The water in the spring of the Samaritan woman, dug by the forefather Jacob and later consecrated by the conversation of the Savior at this source, was not simple.

The concept of holy water is found in the Old Testament: “and the priest will take holy water in an earthen vessel” (Numbers 5:17).

But very special water flows in the Jordan River. Our Lord Jesus Christ appeared on the Jordan to sanctify the watery nature and make it a source of sanctification for man. That is why, at the Baptism of the Lord in the Jordan, the miracle of creation seemed to be repeated: the heavens opened, the Spirit of God descended, and the voice of the Heavenly Father was heard: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).

Thus, after the fall of man, the consecration of water took place for the first time.

Why does the Church sanctify water?

Why does the Church sanctify water again and again when it has already been sanctified by the Baptism of the Son of God Himself? We, fallen, though renewed by the grace of God, people, always, until death, carry in ourselves the seed of ancient sinful impurity, and therefore we can always sin, and thereby again and again introduce impurity and decay into the world around us. Therefore, our Lord Jesus Christ, having ascended to heaven, left us his living and life-giving word, granted believers the right to bring down the blessing of the Heavenly Father to earth by the power of faith and prayer, sent down the Comforter of the Spirit of truth. Who always abides in the Church of Christ, so that the Church, in spite of the human seed of sin and impurity that is inexhaustible in the heart, always has an inexhaustible source of sanctification and life.

Keeping this commandment of the Lord, the Holy Church always sanctifies not only the person himself, but also everything that he uses in the world with the Word of God, the sacraments and prayer. With this, the Church puts a limit to the spread of sinful impurities, prevents the multiplication of the disastrous consequences of our sins.

The Church sanctifies the earth, asking God for the blessing of fertility, sanctifies the bread that serves us as food, and the water that quenches our thirst.

Without blessing, without sanctification, could this corruptible food and drink sustain our lives? “It is not the generation of fruits that nourishes a man, but Your word preserves those who believe in You” (Wisdom 16:26).

This is where the answer to the question of why the Church sanctifies water arises.

By consecrating water, the Church returns the water element to its original purity and holiness, brings down to the water, by the power of prayer and the Word of God, the blessing of the Lord and the grace of the Most Holy and Life-Giving Spirit.

Why is water consecrated in special vessels?

Like everything else in the Church, the vessel in which the consecration of water is performed carries a great symbolic meaning. Outwardly, the water-consecrated vessel looks like a chalice for communion. A vessel for consecrating water is a large bowl on a low stand with a round base for putting it on the table. On the eastern side of the cup there are cells where, at the beginning of the blessing of water, three candles are placed - in the image of the Holy Trinity, which sanctifies and enlightens people with Divine grace. As a vessel and receptacle of God's grace, the chalice of water approaches in its symbolic meaning the Eucharistic chalice - chalice (translated from Greek - a vessel for drinking) and, like the chalice, marks the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, in whose womb human nature was formed Lord Jesus Christ. The round base of the bowl for blessing water is a sign of the circle of the earthly Church, the round bowl itself, into which water is poured, marks the Heavenly Church, and all together is a symbol of the Mother of God, as the purest vessel of God's grace.

The baptismal font has the same basic symbolic meanings. This vessel is also made in the form of a bowl, only much larger than the water-consecrated one, and on a high stand.

How does the rite of the great blessing of water take place?

The rite of consecration of water, which takes place on the feast of the Epiphany, is called great because of the special solemnity of the rite, imbued with the remembrance of the Baptism of the Lord, in which the Church sees not only the prototype of the mysterious washing away of sins, but also the actual sanctification of the very nature of water, through the immersion of God in the flesh into it.

The Great Blessing of Water is sometimes performed at the end of the Liturgy, after the prayer behind the ambo, and sometimes at the end of Vespers, after the litanies: “Let us fulfill our evening prayer…”. It is performed at the liturgy on the very day of Theophany, and also on the eve of Theophany, when this eve takes place on any day of the week, except Saturday and Sunday. If the eve of Theophany is on Saturday or Sunday, then the great blessing of water takes place at the end of Vespers.

On the very day of the Epiphany (January 6, January 19, according to a new style), the consecration of water is performed with a solemn procession, known as the “walk to the Jordan”. Both on the eve of Theophany, and on the feast itself, the clergy come out to bless the water through the royal gates. Before the removal of the Cross, the priest or bishop in full vestments censes the honest Cross three times only in front. They carry out the Cross on the head, preceded by two candle-bearers and deacons with censers. One of the priests carries the Holy Gospel. In this order, they go to large vessels filled with water beforehand. Here the clergyman carrying the Cross removes it from his head. At the water, he overshadows the Cross on four sides and puts it on a bedded and decorated table. Those gathered light candles, the rector, preceded by a deacon with a candle, incenses three times near the table, the image, the clergy and the people.

The great consecration of water begins with the singing of troparions: “The voice of the Lord cries out on the waters, saying: come, receive all the Spirit of wisdom, the Spirit of reason, the Spirit of the fear of God, the Christ who has appeared”, “Today the nature of the waters is sanctified” and others. Then three parimia are read from the book of the prophet Isaiah (35, 1-10; 55, 1-13; 12, 3-6). The great Old Testament prophet three times predicts the Baptism of the Lord from John, which took place on the verge of two Testaments. He expresses the joy and hope of the Church about drawing water from the source of salvation: “Thirsty ones! go all to the waters... Seek the Lord when you can find Him; call upon Him when He is near. Let the ungodly leave his way, and the lawless man his thoughts, and turn to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him, and to our God, for He is much merciful” (Is. 55:1; 6-7).

Then they read the Epistle of the Apostle Paul (1 Cor. 10, 1-4) about the mysterious type of the baptism of the Jews, in the name of Moses in the midst of the cloud and the sea, and about their spiritual food in the wilderness and drinking from the spiritual stone, which was the image of the coming Christ.

Finally, the Gospel of Mark (1, 9-12) is read, where the apostle tells about the very Baptism of the Lord.

“Great ecu Lord, and marvelous are Thy works, and not a single word will be sufficient for the singing of Thy wonders! By Thy will, from non-existence, Thou hast brought into being all things: By Thy power, keep creation, and by Thy Providence build the world - All smart Forces tremble for You: The sun sings to You: The moon praises You: The stars are present to You: The light listens to You: The abysses tremble for You: They work for You sources. Thou hast stretched out the sky like a skin; The angelic forces serve you: Archangels bow down to you - this God is indescribable, without beginning and inexpressible - Himself, the Lover of mankind to the King, come and now by the influx of Your Holy Spirit and sanctify this water.

At the same time there is censing over water. The consecration of water during the reading of the prayer is accompanied by a triple blessing by her hand of the shepherd when pronouncing the words: “Ubo yourself, Lover of mankind, King, come now by the influx of Your Holy Spirit and sanctify this water.”

The great agiasma (Greek - “shrine”, this is the name of the water consecrated according to the order of the Great consecration) is consecrated, in addition to three times immersing the honest Cross in it, with the sign of the cross, blessing and more powerful and complex prayers and chants than with a small consecration of water performed at prayers.

“Ubo himself, Lover of mankind, King, come and now by the influx of Your Holy Spirit and sanctify this water. And the rain for her is the grace of deliverance, the blessing of the Jordan: create a source of incorruption, a gift of sanctification, resolution of sins, healing of ailments, destructive demons, impregnable forces, full of angelic fortresses, ”this is said about water, that it asks for the fulfillment of an angelic fortress, and if is asked, then, therefore, with faith that the acquisition of such a mysterious power by water is possible - and will be ...

“The angelic fortress is full, but those who draw and partake have ecu for the purification of souls and bodies, for the healing of passions, for the consecration of houses, and for every good benefit ... Thyself and now, Lord, sanctify this water with Your Holy Spirit. Give sanctification, health, cleansing and blessing to all who touch it and take communion, and smear it, ”the priest prays with such strong and responsibly authoritative words.

And before that, the deacon raises approximately the same petitions:

“For the hedgehog to be sanctified by this water by the power and action and influx of the Holy Spirit, let us pray to the Lord.

About the hedgehog to descend on the waters of this cleansing action of the eternal Trinity ...

Oh hedgehog to be granted to them the grace of deliverance, the blessing of the Jordan, by the power and action and influx of the Holy Spirit ...

Oh hedgehog send down to the Lord God the blessing of the Jordan and sanctify this water ...

About the hedgehog being this water, sanctification for the gift, deliverance from sins, for the healing of the soul and body, and for a fair amount of great benefit ...

About the hedgehog being this water that brings eternal life ...

Oh, this hedgehog will appear to drive away every slander of the visible and invisible enemy ...

About those who draw and eat it for the consecration of houses ...

About this hedgehog for the purification of souls and bodies, to all who draw with faith and partake of it ...

Let us pray to the Lord for a hedgehog to be filled with sanctification, with the communion of these waters, with the invisible manifestation of the Holy Spirit.

At the end of the reading of all the prayers, the priest immerses the honest Cross into the water three times, holding it straight with both hands, while singing the troparion of the feast of the Epiphany:

“In the Jordan, to you who are baptized, O Lord, Trinity worship has appeared: the voice of your parents testifies to you, calling your beloved Son, and the Spirit, in the form of a dove, knows your word affirmation: appear, Christ God, and enlighten the world, glory to you.” The priest, taking a vessel with consecrated water and sprinkled, sprinkles crosswise on all sides.

Then they approach him to kiss the Cross, and each suitable priest sprinkles with consecrated water.

Even St. John Chrysostom said that the holy water of the Epiphany remains incorruptible for many years, it is fresh, pure and pleasant, as if it had been drawn from a living spring just this minute.

This is the miracle of God's grace, which everyone sees even now!

According to the Church, agiasma is not simple water of spiritual significance, but a new being, a spiritual and bodily being, the interconnectedness of heaven and earth, grace and matter, and, moreover, very close.

That is why the Great Hagiasma, according to the canons of the Church, is regarded as a kind of lower degree of Holy Communion: in those cases when, due to sins committed, a member of the Church is penalized and forbidden to partake of the Holy Body and Blood, the usual reservation is made to the canons: “Let him drink to this agiasma.”

Many people mistakenly believe that the water consecrated on Epiphany Eve and the water consecrated on the very day of Theophany are different, but in fact, on Christmas Eve and on the very day of Theophany, the same rite of great blessing of water is used during the consecration of water.

Epiphany water is a shrine that should be in every home of an Orthodox Christian. It is carefully kept in the holy corner, near the icons.

How is water blessed at a prayer service ordered by believers?

In addition to baptismal water, Orthodox Christians often use water consecrated at prayer services.

Prayer singing, or a prayer service, is a special divine service in which they ask the Lord, the Mother of God and the saints to send down mercy or thank God for receiving blessings.

Prayers are performed in the temple or private homes.

In the temple, prayers are performed after the liturgy and are performed at the request and needs of the faithful. Such prayer songs include prayer rites performed with the blessing of various objects, about the healing of the sick, about those heading on a long journey, about warriors, etc. At prayer services, the rite of small consecration of water usually takes place.

The small consecration of water is also performed by the Church on the day of the Origin (wearing out) of the honest trees of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord and on the day of Midlife, when the words of the Savior, full of the deepest mystery, spoken by Him to the Samaritan woman are remembered: “Whoever drinks the water that I will give him, he will not thirst forever ; but the water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water springing up into eternal life” (John 4:14).

For a small blessing of water, a covered table is placed in the middle of the church, on which a bowl of water is supplied and the Cross and the Gospel are relied upon. Candles are lit in front of the bowl. After the exclamation of the priest, Psalm 142 is read: “Lord, hear my prayer…”. Then they sing: “God is the Lord” and troparia: “To the Mother of God is diligently now as a parson ...”, “We will never be silent, Mother of God ...”. At the same time, the priest incense crosswise water.

After reading Psalm 50: "Have mercy on me, God ...", troparia and litanies, the temple or house is incense.

At the end, the prokeimenon is pronounced and the Apostle is read (Heb. 2:14-18), in which St. Paul speaks of Christ:

“And since the children share in flesh and blood, He also took them in order to deprive by death of power the one with the power of death, that is, the devil, and to deliver those who, through the fear of death, were subject to slavery all their lives. For He will not receive angels, but He will receive Abraham's seed. Therefore, He had to become like the brethren in everything, in order to be a merciful and faithful high priest before God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. For just as He Himself endured when tempted, He is able to help those who are tempted.”

Then the Gospel is read (John 5:2-4):

“There is a pool in Jerusalem at the Sheep Gate, called in Hebrew Bethesda, in which there were five covered passages. In them lay a great multitude of the sick, the blind, the lame, the withered, waiting for the movement of the water, for the Angel of the Lord at times went into the pool and disturbed the water, and whoever entered it first after the disturbance of the water, he recovered, no matter what disease he was possessed.

The litany is pronounced: “Let us pray to the Lord in peace,” in which petitions are raised for the blessing of water. This is usually done by censing water. Then the priest reads a prayer for the blessing of the water.

Sometimes a special prayer is also read: “God of great name, work miracles, they are innumerable! Come now to Thy servants who pray to Thee, Master, and eat of Thy Holy Spirit and sanctify this water: and the rain of those who drink from it and receive and sprinkle it with Thy servant is a passionate change, the remission of sins, healing by illness, and liberation from all evil, and affirmation and the sanctification of the house and the cleansing of all filth, and the slander of the devil's driving away: as if blessed and glorified, Thy most honorable and magnificent Name, the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever. Amen".

After reading the prayers, the priest, taking the honest Cross with the Crucifix towards him, makes a cruciform movement on the surface of the water with its lower part, then immerses the entire Cross in the water. At the same time, troparia are sung: “Save, Lord, Thy people ...” (three times) and “Thy gifts ...”.

Then the priest kisses the Cross, taken out of the water, and sprinkles all those present and the whole church. Those present venerate the Cross, and the priest sprinkles each.

After the blessing of water, everyone who ordered a prayer service can receive holy water.

Why does the Church pray for water sources?

“The main of all the needs for human life are water, fire, iron, salt, wheat flour, honey, milk, grape juice, oil and clothing: all this is beneficial to the pious, but sinners can be harmed” (Sir. 39, 32-33).

“…What gift is so necessary for us as water? - says the holy martyr Hippolytus of Rome. - With water everything is washed, and nourished, and cleansed, and irrigated. Water waters the earth, produces dew, fattens the grapes, brings ears of corn to maturity... But why talk too much? Without water, nothing that we see can exist: water is so necessary that when the other elements have a dwelling under the vaults of the heavens, it received a container for itself above the heavens. The Prophet himself testifies to this, calling; “Praise him, you heavens of heavens and the waters that are higher than the heavens” (Ps. 149:4).

And the Church, with a fervent prayer, calls out to the Lord to call forth sweet and abundant water from the bowels of the earth.

In the well, the digging of which is done according to the special prayers of the priest, there is not ordinary water: the “digging of the well” is already consecrated by a special ceremony.

“Give us water in this place, sweet and tasty, sufficient for consumption, but not harmful for acceptance ...” - the priest prays and the first begins to dig a well.

A special prayer is again performed over the dug well: “To the Creator of the waters and the Maker of all ... You Yourself sanctify this water: eat Your holy power on every resistive work, and give to everyone who receives from it, for drink, or for washing, the health of soul and body , for a change in every passion and every ailment: as if there would be healing of water and peace to all who touch it and accept it ... "

Ordinary well water becomes an object of worship and, moreover, a miraculous object - "water of healing and peace."

Many sources, wells, springs are known, where, through the prayers of the saints, water is poured out, which has a greater blessing than the waters of Bethesda of Jerusalem. Not only drinking this water, but even dipping into the waters of these springs brings many healings and miracles.

The Church has always performed and is now performing the consecration of the waters of public springs, rivers, lakes. This water also ends up in reservoirs, and then in water pipes, in our apartments.

It can be argued that there is not a single stream of water in the world, not a single drop that would not be sanctified, spiritually fertilized by prayer, blessed and, consequently, which would not be life-giving and saving for people, animals, birds and the earth itself.

If we always acted as the Church and the Word of God teach us, then the grace-filled gifts of the Holy Spirit would constantly be poured out on us, then every spring would be a source of healing for us from bodily and spiritual ailments, every cup of water would serve as purification and enlightenment, "water of healing and rest", holy water.

But that doesn't happen. People get sick from water, water becomes a dangerous, deadly and destructive element. Yes, tap water - and holy water does not help us!

Are the prayers of the Church powerless?

When God intended to punish the first world with water, then He said to Noah: “The end of all flesh is come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and, behold, I will destroy them from the earth ... I will bring a flood of waters on the earth to destroy all flesh that has the spirit of life under the heavens; everything that is on earth will lose its life” (Genesis 6:13:17). These words can be applied to our day as well. Do not be surprised that water does not heal, does not benefit. What is surprising here, when the main sacrament - the Eucharist, the acceptance of the Body and Blood of the Lord - serves many not for salvation, but for condemnation ...

“Whoever eats and drinks unworthily, he eats and drinks condemnation to himself, not considering the Body of the Lord” (1 Cor. 11:29).

Miracles and healings are happening today. But only those who accept it with living faith in the promises of God and the power of the prayer of the Holy Church, those who have a pure and sincere desire to change their lives, repentance, and salvation are rewarded with miraculous effects of holy water. God does not work miracles where they want to see them only out of curiosity, without a sincere intention to use them for their salvation. An evil and adulterous generation, the Savior said about his unbelieving contemporaries, is looking for a sign; and no sign will be given to him.

In order for holy water to be beneficial, we will take care of the purity of the soul, the lordship of thoughts and deeds. And with every touch of holy water, let us offer up this prayer in our minds and hearts.
