Treatment of COPD with folk remedies: infusions, nutrition, inhalations. Treatment of COPD with folk remedies: real and safe

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an independent progressive disease, which is characterized by an inflammatory process, as well as structural changes in the tissue and blood vessels of the lungs. The disease is accompanied by a violation of bronchial patency.

COPD usually occurs in men over 40 years of age. And in the absence of proper treatment, it leads to swelling of the bronchial mucosa and spasms of smooth muscles.

Quite often, the disease is accompanied by bacterial complications, increased pressure and a decrease in the level of oxygen in the blood. In the presence of such symptoms, the probability of death reaches 30%.

Treatment of the disease is carried out with the help of traditional and traditional medicine.

The exact cause of the development of the disease has not been identified.

The main factors that increase the risk of developing COPD include:

  • smoking;
  • living in damp and cold climates;
  • chronic or acute protracted bronchitis;
  • unfavorable working conditions;
  • various lung diseases;
  • genetic predisposition.

The risk group includes:

  • low-income people who use solid fuels for heating and cooking;
  • long-term smokers;
  • residents of large cities with a high level of gas pollution.

Therefore, 9 out of 10 cases are diagnosed in low- or middle-income countries. This is due not only to worse living and working conditions, but also to the lack of effective prevention.

Symptoms and stages of the disease

The most common symptoms of the disease include shortness of breath and cough with sputum production. With the development of lung disease, even minimal physical activity becomes much more difficult.

The most characteristic signs of the disease include:

Depending on the severity of the disease, four stages can be distinguished, each of which is characterized by its own symptoms:

  1. First stage. It flows lightly. Most often, patients do not even notice a violation of their lungs. Among the symptoms, a chronic cough should be distinguished, according to which doctors make a diagnosis. However, in the first stage, cough may also be absent;
  2. Second stage. The course of the disease in the second stage is of moderate severity. There is an exacerbation of the disease, accompanied by a strong cough, sputum production and shortness of breath with significant physical exertion;
  3. Third stage. The course of the disease is characterized as severe. Often there are exacerbations of the disease, shortness of breath increases and passes into respiratory failure;
  4. Fourth stage. At this stage, a person's condition deteriorates greatly, and frequent exacerbations become life-threatening. At this stage, severe bronchial obstruction is noted, and cor pulmonale may develop. The fourth stage of the disease leads a person to disability, and can be fatal.

Diagnostics

Diagnosis of the disease consists in collecting an anamnesis, assessing the general condition of the patient, as well as using various examinations and tests.

The main method of accurate diagnosis is spirometry. Volumetric and speed indicators of lung function are also used.

To assess the nature of inflammation of the bronchi, a cytological examination of sputum is used. A blood test reveals polycetomy, which occurs with the development of hypoxia.

Blood gas analysis is used to detect acute respiratory failure.

Additionally, an X-ray of the lungs may be prescribed to exclude similar diseases. An electrocardiogram can detect pulmonary hypertension. A pulmonologist deals with the diagnosis and treatment of COPD.

Traditional Treatments

The most effective way to cure chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is to eliminate the factors that provoke it, especially smoking.

Additionally, the doctor will prescribe a treatment that can slow down the process of destruction of the lungs, as well as significantly improve well-being.

In the treatment of the disease, the following means are used:

Bronchodilators are most often available in the form of inhalations that can be used by people of any age, including the elderly. This form of the drug is the safest, and does not burden the liver, kidneys and other organs.

An effective method of treatment is to visit a rehabilitation program that helps you learn how to stop an attack on your own. The program includes a set of exercises, as well as nutritional recommendations.

Treatment with folk remedies

One of the safest and most popular treatments is the use of herbal medicines and other natural remedies. However, before using any of them, it is recommended to consult with your doctor.

The most effective means for treatment:

Conclusion

COPD is an incurable disease. However, if it is diagnosed in a timely manner, it will be possible to stop lung damage.

To do this, you need to stop smoking, always wear a respirator in hazardous production and treat respiratory diseases in time.

In contact with

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a collective concept that includes many diseases of the bronchopulmonary system. Most of these pathologies are characterized by a chronic course with periods of exacerbation and remission. Diseases of this group are considered quite dangerous, as they lead to a strong narrowing of the bronchi. This includes chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, emphysema, cystic fibrosis and many other pathologies. It is very important to diagnose diseases of this group in a timely manner, as the quality of life of the patient and the prognosis depend on it. Treatment of COPD with folk remedies gives good results, therefore, such prescriptions can be supplemented with drug treatment.

Symptoms

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease usually worsens when viruses or pathogenic bacteria enter the body. The symptoms of this pathology are very similar to a number of other diseases of the respiratory organs. The main signs of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are:

  • Violent cough, with a small amount of sputum.
  • Shortness of breath that occurs both during physical activity and in a state of complete rest.
  • Swelling of limbs.
  • Inadequate sleep, interrupted by cough attacks.
  • abnormal weakness.
  • Pain in the region of the heart.
  • Rattling in the chest, which can be heard even at a distance.

A patient with COPD often has more bronchitis and colds. Symptoms of respiratory failure and emphysema may appear.

When the first signs of the disease appear, it is urgent to see a doctor. If delayed with treatment, it will quickly lead to a number of serious complications, including death.

In severe COPD, the patient's heart function is disrupted and fainting occurs.

Traditional medicine recipes

You can supplement COPD Treatment with folk remedies at home. Many herbal recipes are just as effective as medicines. For the treatment of COPD diseases, various drugs, decoctions and infusions are used.

You need to be treated in this way for at least 2 weeks. For children, the dosage is reduced to a tablespoon, 3 times a day.

For treatment, you can use only plant materials collected in ecologically clean areas. It is better to buy herbs in a pharmacy, where all drugs have the appropriate documents.

Ginseng

Ginseng will also help to get rid of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease forever. This plant occupies a separate place in Chinese medicine and helps well in the treatment of diseases of the respiratory organs. Ginseng improves immunity, tones the body well and improves the well-being of the patient..

To prepare a healing infusion, take two tablespoons of ginseng and pour a liter of well-warm boiled water. Infuse for about half an hour and take half a glass, 3 times a day. If the broth is too knit, it is allowed to dilute it with water and add a little honey.

Altey

Althea root has a strong mucolytic effect. This medicinal plant is used not only in traditional medicine recipes, but also for the manufacture of some medicines. On the basis of this raw material, Mukaltin and cough mixtures are produced, which can be given not only to adults, but also to children.

To prepare the drug, take a teaspoon of crushed plant material, put it in a thermos and pour a glass of boiling water over it. Infuse the composition for about an hour, then filter and drink half a glass 3 times a day, always after meals.

The duration of such treatment should be at least a month. After that, you need to take a short break, and then repeat the course.

You can add a little mint or lemon balm to the marshmallow decoction, in which case the taste of the drink will improve significantly.

Licorice

Licorice has long been used to treat diseases of the bronchopulmonary system and throat. This vegetable raw material has found application not only in folk, but also in traditional medicine.

A medicine is prepared from a tablespoon of crushed licorice and a tablespoon of eucalyptus leaves. Vegetable raw materials are poured into 0.5 liters of boiling water and insisted for an hour. After that, filter and drink 1/3 cup before each meal. To improve the taste, you can add a little honey to the broth.

Bee products can only be used if they are not allergic!

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a long-term medical condition. With therapy, his symptoms may subside, and home care methods can reduce the intensity of coughing, eliminate excess mucus production, and solve other problems.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by a reduction in the flow of air that goes in and out of the lungs. People with COPD often experience shortness of breath and therefore may have difficulty doing physical activity and performing daily life tasks.

There are currently no therapeutic strategies that can permanently cure COPD, but some home treatments can open up the airways and improve quality of life.

In this resource, we will describe home care practices that help manage COPD. In particular, we will discuss positive lifestyle changes, as well as supplements and essential oils.

The following are home treatments and natural remedies that often help people manage COPD symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.

To give up smoking

Stopping smoking can slow the progression of COPD

Smoking is the main cause of COPD worldwide. 90% of deaths associated with COPD are recorded due to human addiction to cigarettes.

Tobacco smoking irritates the airways in the lungs. Inflammation of the airways causes them to narrow, which makes it difficult for air to pass in both directions.

A study conducted in 2011 by an international team of scientists showed that in smokers, lung function in COPD fades faster. In addition, these patients are associated with a higher risk of complications and mortality.

Smoking can also reduce the effectiveness of steroid inhalers prescribed by doctors to treat COPD.

Quitting smoking is the most effective way to slow the progression of the disease. Patients with COPD should ask their doctor how to quit smoking quickly and easily.

Improving environmental air quality

Certain irritants can make it difficult for people with COPD to breathe. These include the following:

  • paints and varnishes;
  • chemical cleaners;
  • pesticides;
  • cigarette smoke;
  • dust;
  • pet hair.

Here are some tips to help improve the air quality in your home:

  • limit contact with household chemicals;
  • open a window to improve airflow;
  • use air filtration systems;
  • clean air filtration systems regularly to prevent the development of harmful mold;
  • Vacuum and maintain order in the house to prevent dust accumulation;
  • Wash bedding weekly to reduce dust mites.

Breathing exercises

Breathing exercises are done to relieve symptoms of COPD by strengthening the muscles involved in breathing. Another goal of such exercises is an easier perception of physical activity by the body.

In 2012, Australian researchers conducted a study comparing COPD patients who did breathing exercises over 15 weeks with those who did not.

Among the breathing exercises, scientists have included the following.

  • Breathing with tight lips. This exercise involves inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth with tightly pursed lips.
  • Diaphragm breathing. To perform this exercise, you need to contract the diaphragm so that breathing is deeper. The abdomen expands significantly when inhaling and relaxes when exhaling.
  • Pranayama. This method of controlled breathing is often used in yoga. Pranayama involves concentration on those areas of the body that are involved in the respiratory process.

The results of the study did not show a significant improvement in symptoms and quality of life with the use of these techniques, but people who exercised saw an improvement in the body's susceptibility to physical activity.

stress management

Psychological stress weakens the immune system and may contribute to COPD outbreaks

COPD can cause sudden flare-ups of symptoms, also known as flare-ups in medical terms. Anxiety and depression can increase the risk of these episodes. In addition, techniques that reduce stress levels improve overall health.

A study by American scientists, the results of which were published in 2016, showed that if a person suffering from COPD is faced with depression, then he has a higher chance of being re-admitted to the hospital thirty days after the previous discharge. Emotional stress can weaken the immune system and thus increase the risk of respiratory infections.

For many people, mindfulness meditation helps reduce stress. A small 2015 US study found that a two-month course of mindfulness meditation improved breathing rates in people with COPD. Participants in this study also reported improved emotional well-being to doctors after six weeks of attending classes.

healthy weight

COPD patients who are underweight are associated with an increased risk of mortality compared with those who are obese with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

People with COPD and low body weight are more likely to develop the following:

  • weakening of the respiratory muscles;
  • decreased ability to perceive physical activity;
  • decrease in lung capacity.

According to a recent review by Dutch scientists, a balanced diet can help people with COPD by improving lung function. In addition, a proper diet supports heart health and promotes metabolism. People with a low body weight can especially benefit from nutrition if they consume foods that are rich in calories, protein and unsaturated fats. All of the above, combined with physical activity, leads to an increase in muscle mass and an increase in energy levels.

Muscle strengthening

Many people with COPD find it difficult to perform various types of physical activity because breathing becomes more difficult during exercise.

However, it should be understood that complete cessation of exercise may worsen COPD symptoms. In particular, it helps to reduce muscle strength and increase fatigue.

The following types of physical activity help COPD patients build muscle strength and increase lung capacity.

  • Interval training. They provide for the alternation of periods with low and high intensity loads. Interval training can be especially beneficial for people with severe COPD because it works the muscles without overworking the heart and lungs.
  • Power training. In this case, resistance methods are used to improve the condition of the muscles, for example, with the help of heavy objects, tape expanders or the person's own body weight. Building muscle in the lower body can reduce the degree of shortness of breath.

As soon as a person begins to lose physical fitness, the loads for him become more and more difficult, and lung function may deteriorate. Therefore, doctors recommend that people adhere to a physical activity regimen from the initial stages of COPD.

water exercises

People with COPD may have muscle or bone conditions that make it difficult to be physically active. Water exercise places less stress on body structures, which is why these types of training are considered more manageable and often more suitable for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In 2013, Australian scientists conducted a study and found that sports performed in water increase the intensity of permissible physical activity and improve the quality of life. In the case of disabled people with COPD, water exercise was found to be more effective than regular exercise and no physical activity at all.

Scientists suggest that this is due to the unique properties of water, which supports the weight of the body and at the same time provides resistance, allowing you to increase the intensity of physical activity.

Additives

COPD symptoms can be relieved by taking a variety of supplements. Below are the most effective of them.

Vitamin D

Deficiency can increase airway inflammation and impair the body's ability to fight bacteria.

Coenzyme Q10 and creatine

Coenzyme Q10 and creatine are natural chemicals that promote energy flow to the body's cells.

In 2013, American scientists set out to find out if coenzyme Q10, in combination with creatine, improves COPD symptoms in people with chronic respiratory failure.

After two months of supplementation with creatine and coenzyme Q10, patients improved exercise capacity, improved breathlessness, and improved quality of life.

Essential oils

COPD patients can also use essential oils to widen the airways and clear mucus from the lungs. These products can be taken through a diffuser or diluted with carrier oils and applied directly to the skin. Eucalyptus oil is one of the essential oils that can help with COPD.

Eucalyptus oil has anti-inflammatory properties

Eucalyptus oil contains eucalyptol. It is a naturally occurring chemical compound that may benefit COPD patients due to the following properties:

  • is an antioxidant and natural anti-inflammatory agent;
  • opens the airways in the lungs;
  • reduces mucus production;
  • helps clear mucus from the lungs;
  • prevents outbreaks in moderate and severe forms of COPD.

According to another study, scientists suggested that people add 12 drops of eucalyptus oil to 150 milliliters of boiled water and breathe the steam three times a day.

When should you see a doctor?

A doctor should be consulted if symptoms of an exacerbation of COPD appear, namely:

  • more severe shortness of breath;
  • increased volumes of secreted mucus;
  • yellow, green or brown mucus;
  • thicker or stickier mucus;
  • fever;
  • cold and flu symptoms;
  • increased fatigue.

Some signs and symptoms are indicative of severe COPD flare-ups, so seek emergency medical attention if they occur. These signs include the following:

  • dyspnea;
  • blue lips and fingers;
  • clouding of consciousness;
  • drowsiness.

By treating exacerbations of COPD at an early stage, the chances of developing further complications can be reduced.

Conclusion

COPD is a chronic medical condition that is not easily controlled. People can manage its symptoms with home care methods that include physical activity, breathing techniques, nutritional supplements, and essential oils.

If the symptoms of COPD worsen, then it is better to consult a doctor in such a situation.

The essence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a gradual and irreversible difficulty (obstruction) of breathing in humans. And, unfortunately, this disease of the respiratory system is very common.

The group of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease includes such diseases (one or a combination of them) as:

  • - asthma;
  • - emphysema;
  • - Chronical bronchitis.

During the development of the disease in the bronchial tree, a change in its walls occurs, which is reflected in the difficult evacuation of sputum and the violation of air movement in the broncho-pulmonary system (air accumulates in large quantities in the lungs). Due to the accumulation of sputum, emphysema develops.

Main the reasons The reasons for the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are adenovirus diseases, environmental pollution of the air, hereditary predisposition, harmful working conditions (for example, among miners, as well as among workers of metallurgical plants), but first of all, smoking. In smokers, the disease occurs in the most severe form.

The development of the disease can be judged by the following featured:

  • - feeling of tiredness;
  • - cough with the release of some mucus;
  • - shortness of breath (especially during physical activity);
  • - whistling and wheezing in the chest;
  • - feeling of tightness and tightness in the chest;
  • - frequent occurrence of respiratory diseases.

Due to damage to the lung tissue, less oxygen enters the body, which nourishes the muscles and organs, so a person has a feeling of shortness of breath, fatigue. And the mucus that accumulates in the bronchi causes a feeling of constriction, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath.

For the treatment of COPD (at the first signs), you should consult a general practitioner or pulmonologist. For diagnosis, the patient is referred to spirometry(for the study of the functions of external respiration). Additionally, the following may be assigned: fluorography or radiography lung, electrocardiography, analysis outgoing sputum and blood. These tests confirm the diagnosis of COPD and rule out other possible cough-related illnesses.

In addition to the treatment prescribed by the doctor, traditional medicine methods help to alleviate the symptoms of the disease and prevent its progression. However, before using any medicinal plants, it is necessary to make sure that they are safe and that there are no contraindications to their use (including an allergic reaction).

Traditional medicine methods should have an anti-inflammatory effect, a tonic effect, a beneficial effect on the respiratory system, and facilitate the removal of sputum from the bronchi.

To increase the effectiveness of treatment, it is necessary, if possible, to exclude smoking, to be more in the fresh air. Physical exercise will help improve lung ventilation. A balanced diet will help strengthen the body, reduce the development of inflammation.

Bring to a boil about half a liter of milk and crushed garlic clove. It is good to insist, add honey. Drink throughout the day, warming up before drinking.

Inhalations

The most effective treatment for COPD. Vapors directly deliver medicinal substances to the lungs. At the same time, blood vessels expand, metabolism increases, swelling and inflammation are removed. In addition, healing inhalation steam destroys pathogenic organisms, restores the mucous membrane of the lungs.

When using inhalations, a number of rules must be observed: steam inhalation should not be done in case of an acute inflammatory process, since heating will additionally increase tissue swelling and further expand blood vessels; the procedure can last no more than ten minutes; After physical activity and eating, at least half an hour should pass.

Inhalation recipes:

Breathe over decoctions of herbs: oregano, mint, calendula, chamomile, needles, rosemary. Herbs can be combined.
Chop the onion, put in a glass. Hold the glass tightly to your mouth. Inhale the onion phytoncides deeply with your mouth, holding the exhalation. Exhale through the nose.
Add essential oils of pine, eucalyptus, chamomile to a pot of boiling water. Use oils in very small amounts. Enough 3 - 5 cap. Breathe in vapors, covered with a towel.
Breathe in the steam of cooked potato peels.
Steam inhalation with sea salt: 3 tbsp. l/liter
Another option: one glass of water and 5 grams of baking soda.

Breathing exercises

Folk remedies also include breathing exercises and physical exercises. They are aimed at getting rid of shortness of breath, strengthening the intercostal and diaphragmatic muscles. In addition, exercise normalizes gas exchange and improves ventilation of the lungs.

Insert a cocktail straw into a jar of water. Take a deep breath, taking in as much air as possible, and then slowly exhale into the straw. Do it for 10 minutes.
Count: “one, two, three”, while exhaling as much as possible, while the stomach should be pulled in. On the count of four, stick out the abdominal wall as much as possible and inhale (through the diaphragm). Sharply contract the muscles and clear your throat.
Lie on your back. As you exhale, pull your legs towards you, bending them at the knee joint, fix them with your hands. Exhale to the end, inhale with the diaphragm (as in the previous exercise) and take the starting position.
Standing position. Hands to the side. Inhale, then quickly “hug yourself” and exhale strongly.

It often happens that unpretentious folk recipes cope with the disease better than the advertised "super drugs". The main thing is to choose a remedy, taking into account contraindications (and plants have enough of them). A multifaceted approach to treatment should also be followed. That is, use decoctions, and inhalations, and compresses. And COPD will definitely be defeated!

Be sure to check with your doctor before using any of the methods.
