Which is good for lactation. Nutrition while breastfeeding

As you know, lactation is cyclical - and every 1.5-2 months the milk decreases. If you endure the first, most difficult “crisis” well, then you don’t have to worry, because in this case you will be able to continue breastfeeding by almost 100%. And if all the same milk has noticeably decreased? What to do in this case?

You don’t need to blame yourself for everything and become isolated in depression - this will not lead to anything good. But finding affordable ways to increase lactation would be nice. Moreover, they are not at all complicated.

Method 1. Weak black tea with milk to enhance lactation

This tea not only improves lactation, but also has a calming effect for a nursing mother. If you and the baby do not have allergies, you can add honey to tea - however, it is better to do this before nightly feeding, since honey has a hypnotic effect.

Black tea with milk should be drunk half an hour before feeding 3-4 times a day. Then you will soon find a noticeable increase in your breast milk.

In addition, freshly squeezed carrot juice is very useful for increasing lactation.

Method 2. Herbal decoctions

There are a lot of recipes for herbal decoctions. But you need to keep in mind that only one decoction of herbs can effectively help you specifically. Therefore, if after a day of using any decoction of lactation improvements were not found, try another herb. There are 3 groups of lactation boosting herbs that help support moms with a variety of health issues:

Group I - anise, fennel, cumin, dill help if mom has digestive problems.

Group II - mint, oregano, lemon balm are useful for mom's nervous overload.

Probably the oldest recipe for increasing lactation is a decoction of dill seeds. To prepare it, you need to take 1 tablespoon of dill seeds, pour them with 1 cup of boiling water and let it brew in a thermos for 2 hours. This decoction should be taken chilled 2 times a day for half a cup. Instead of dill, you can use cumin or anise - they work the same way. Only now you need to drink an anise drink in 2 tbsp. spoons before each feeding for 3 days. If this is “Your” grass, this time should be enough for the final establishment of milk production.

In addition, it is very useful to drink herbal teas from lemon balm and oregano. The only thing that a nursing mother needs to pay attention to is where these herbs grew. The area where they grow must be environmentally friendly.

Method 3. "Nut milk"

Nuts and milk, as well as honey, are extremely useful products for a nursing mother. Therefore, to increase lactation, you can prepare "nut milk". To do this, you need to take 2 cups of hot milk or cream, 100 g of chopped walnut kernels, pour nuts with milk or cream - and let this mixture brew for 20-30 minutes. In another version, nuts and milk in the same ratio are boiled until thickened. After that, 25 g of sugar is added to the mixture - and they drink 1/3 cup half an hour before feeding.

Method 4. Drinking and food regimen

It is very important for successful feeding - to observe the drinking and food regimen, as well as to sleep fully (at least 8 hours a day) and feel psychological peace.

It is useful for a nursing mother to drink green and herbal teas, mineral water without gas, compotes, freshly squeezed juices (you just need to make sure that the juices do not cause allergies).

The total volume of liquid drunk per day should be approximately 2.5 liters. This also includes soups, cereals, and other liquid foods. Moreover, the drink should be very warm.

As for the diet, a nursing mother should always have protein products on the table: 250 g of veal, poultry or fish, 100-150 g of cottage cheese, 250 g of milk or kefir, 100-150 g of cottage cheese, 20-30 g of hard cheese.

Method 5. Frequent breastfeeding

Frequent attachment to the breast greatly contributes to the production of milk. Therefore, if the baby has problems with lactation, it is recommended to feed not according to the schedule, but according to his desire. If he does not ask for a breast for a long time and sleeps a lot, offer him to eat every 2 hours. And, of course, frequent night feeding is very important. After all, the hormone responsible for the amount of breast milk is produced at night.

When feeding, create close contact between you and your baby. Touch your skin to each other, look your child in the eyes, show him your love. It is also very important to ensure that the child takes the breast correctly. He should touch the chest with his chin, the lower lip should be turned outward, and part of the areola should be visible above the upper one.

In addition, it is very important to choose a comfortable position for feeding.

Method 6. Dandelion juice

Dandelion juice is made from young dandelion leaves. In the spring, when they first appear, you need to collect them, rinse and scroll through a meat grinder. After that, the juice must be filtered and let it brew. Take 1/3 cup 1 time per day before meals.

Method 7. Contrast shower and massage

The hot "component" of the contrast shower should be approximately 45 degrees. Cold - according to your feelings. Under a hot shower, it will be good to massage the mammary glands: stroking with the palm of your hand or water from the shower, massage the mammary gland from the center to the periphery.

A contrast shower should be taken in the morning and evening, directing streams to the chest and making a light massage in a clockwise direction. Then turn around and submerge your back and shoulder blades under the water.

Massage can also be done like this: smear your hands with castor oil - and massage your chest for 2-3 minutes, putting one hand under your chest and the other on your chest. With the hand that is on the chest, you need to make light movements in a clockwise direction, rubbing the oil, trying not to get on the nipple and areola.
Very useful back massage in the thoracic spine. True, an experienced massage therapist should do it - and the touch should also not be too strong.

Method 8. Compresses

If you do not want (or you cannot) take a hot shower, there is another, no less effective remedy - chest compresses. The only thing is that this compress cannot be done if you suffer from mastitis or lactorrhoea (that is, excess milk).

If you have no contraindications, soak a terry towel (or any other terry cloth) in hot water and apply a compress on the chest. It will be possible to remove it when the fabric has completely cooled down.

If you do not have varicose veins or thrombophlebitis, you can try soaring your legs while feeding your baby. Dip your legs in a basin of hot water (only, of course, the water should be tolerably hot - there is no need to burn the limbs) - and start breastfeeding. Milk should come in gradually.

Method 9. Therapeutic bath to increase lactation

When using such a bath, make sure not to chill your chest, so immediately after the end of the procedure, go to bed, covering your chest with a blanket.

The bath is done before going to bed. Pour hot water into a large bowl and place the bowl on the table. Get comfortable next to the bowl and lower your chest into it. Add hot water as the water cools. In total, the duration of the bath should be about 15 minutes. At the end of the procedure, wipe your breasts dry - and put on cotton underwear. From above, it is advisable to wear something woolen that covers the chest - a vest, sweater or bolero.

Method 10. Gymnastics to increase lactation

Special gymnastics to increase lactation will help you not only breastfeed longer, but also maintain your appetizing shape.

What are these exercises to increase lactation?

Bend your elbows at chest level and join your palms with your fingers pointing up. Count to four: on the count of 1-2, squeeze your palms, on the count of 3-4, relax. The position of the hands should not change;

Get on all fours, raise your head up. Move around the apartment in this position for a while. The effect will be enhanced if you remove your bra before doing this exercise;

Spread straight arms to the sides, then cross them in front of you and spread them again. Gradually understand the arms up, crossing and spreading them, counting each crossing. On the count of 10, your arms should be crossed above your head, after which you should also gradually return to the starting position.

In addition to the above methods, there are also some conditions on which the level of lactation of a young mother may depend. Firstly, a nursing mother simply needs positive emotions. You can get them by doing what you love or by talking to people who are pleasant to you. Remember what you liked to do before pregnancy - and try to do it again. Of course, you may not be able to afford extreme sports or performing ballet steps yet. But the usual knitting, embroidery, modeling, listening to pleasant music, drawing, reading or classes in a flower bed are quite up to you.

Secondly, fresh air is very important for you and your child. Walk more often, ventilate the apartment - especially in the warm season. And lactation will not keep you waiting!

Sometimes nursing mothers have periods of decreased lactation, which causes anxiety and a desire to supplement the baby with formula. It will take patience, perseverance and faith that everything will work out. You must fight for every drop of milk.

Some general advice for mothers who want to keep their breast milk:

Attach the child on demand.

If you feed your baby 6 times a day and do not express, indeed, milk can disappear very quickly. If you express after each feeding, then you can support lactation for some time. The terms are different, but rarely it is more than six months, cases of feeding on such behavior for more than a year are isolated. When feeding a child on demand, the mother always has as much milk as the child needs and there is no need to express after each application. In order for the newborn to completely suck out the breast, it is applied to one breast for 2-3 hours, and to the other for the next 2-3 hours. Somewhere after 3 months, when the child is already applied relatively rarely, he may need a second breast in one attachment, then the next time he is applied to the one that was last.

Apply the baby to the breast more often (up to 12 times a day), night feedings are required. They are important for the nutrition of the child, and for his nervous system. In addition, the hormone prolactin responsible for lactation is more actively produced at night, so night feedings usually contribute to longer and better lactation. Some babies gradually stop night feedings on their own at the age of a few months. However, it is quite normal to resume night feedings in the second half of the year, when the child begins to move more actively and his body requires more food.

During periods of reduced lactation, it is necessary to give both breasts at one feeding.

But with a normal amount of milk, it is not necessary to give two breasts. A newborn baby is applied for 2-3 hours to one breast. Then 2-3 hours to another (for example, 5 times in 3 hours - to the right, all sucked - now to the left). We need this so that the baby sucks the breast to the end, and receives “forward” and “hind” milk in a balanced amount. If the baby is transferred to the other breast in the middle of feeding, he will not receive enough “hind” milk rich in fats. He will suck mainly the front portion from one breast and add the same from the other. Foremilk is rich in lactose, after a while the baby can no longer cope with the load of lactose. Lactose intolerance develops.

Do not save milk in reserve, but be sure to express it to the last drop.

There is one unpleasant “pitfall” in regular pumping after feeding, which even most doctors are not aware of. It's called lactase deficiency. When a mother expresses after a feed, she expresses just the “hind” fatty milk, which is relatively poor in milk sugar, lactose. She feeds the child mainly with the anterior portion, which accumulates in the breast between rare feedings. There is a lot of lactose in the anterior portion. The child is fed “only lactose”, the gastrointestinal tract of the child after some time ceases to cope with such volumes of lactose. Lactase deficiency develops (Lactase is an enzyme that breaks down lactose - milk sugar, it is lacking). This is one of the reasons for the development of lactase deficiency; the second, for example, is this: the mother gives the child two breasts in one feeding. But about this separately.

Increase the frequency of feeding.

Don't skip night feeds.

Take your child to your bed. Milk is formed better if you doze off together, sleep in the same bed.

Apilak (royal milk of bees) 1 tablet 3 times a day under the tongue until completely resorbed for 15 days.

Shower-massage according to R.N. Seitz: after feeding the baby and expressing milk (if you do this), pour hot water (45 degrees) from the shower over the mammary gland that was fed, while massaging in circular motions from the nipple to the periphery and from top to bottom while expressing milk. Duration 5-10 minutes. The procedure is carried out 2 times for the left and 2 times for the right breast during the day.

Multivitamins for nursing mothers - intake constantly.
- if the child sleeps for a long time, without waiting for his awakening, you need to express milk.

Eat cumin bread and brown rice dishes regularly, and eat a daily serving of seed salad (also known as lettuce) with sour cream.
- offer both breasts in one feeding and finish with the breast you started with.
- stay with the child for as long as possible, ensuring close contact with him.
- you need a calm atmosphere at home, help and psychological support from your husband and relatives. And most importantly, remember that your support is now needed by the baby and focus all your efforts on restoring hail milk.
- Sufficient night sleep (6-8 hours) and rest during the day (1-2 hours)
- proper and balanced nutrition with the use of special food products for nursing mothers (increase in calorie intake by 700 - 1000 kcal, fluid volume of at least 2 liters per day).
- visits to therapeutic measures prescribed by a doctor: physiotherapy (ultraviolet irradiation of the mammary glands, acupuncture, acupressure).

10-15 minutes before feeding, drink a glass of tea with condensed milk, rosehip broth, fermented milk product or any juice. The juices of black currant, carrot, radish and drinks from fennel, dandelions, nettle, oregano, lemon balm improve the secretion of milk.

You can take tocopherol (vitamin E) - 10-15 mg 2 times a day for 15 days.

You can try appilac (royal milk of bees) 10g (1 tablet) 3 times a day under the tongue until completely absorbed within 10-15 days.

Also, to improve lactation, you can prepare a paste from baker's yeast and dry brewer's yeast hydrolyzate, they improve the quality of breast milk, increasing the content of protein, fat, and lysozyme in it. (Beer intake has an adverse effect on the child's body, affects the central nervous system, up to mental retardation!)

It is useful to eat table salad, radish, dill, fennel, cumin, nettle, hazelnut, dandelion, oregano, lemon balm, anise, sea buckthorn, carrot, honey, angelica. These plants can be consumed in their natural form, such as lettuce or hazelnuts.

Learn how to properly apply. Babies who have had experience sucking bottles and pacifiers very often hold their breasts incorrectly, not taking the areola deep enough into their mouths. Mom may not be hurt, because. There is no extreme variant of incorrect attachment (when the child closes the jaws on the nipple), but the breast is stimulated poorly, because. the nipple and a small part of the areola lie on the tongue, and the child “expresses” them ... It is difficult for a mother who has never observed breastfeeding to determine how correctly her child sucks. The best option is to contact a lactation consultant. In the absence of such in your area, you need to find a mother who is breastfeeding a child, preferably not the first one, and the child must be really breastfeeding, without the experience of sucking foreign objects (nipple, pacifier), and the mother should not have problems with nipples - abrasions, cracks, not now, not before. It is impossible to learn how to apply from books and brochures! There is little hope in the photographs in parenting magazines, because very often in parenting magazines you can find photos of children holding their breasts incorrectly. This is the most important moment in restoring normal lactation. If the mother cannot correct the attachment, or considers the painless version of improper attachment to be good, neither frequent attachments nor nightly feedings will bring the desired result. (see attachment at the bottom of the article)

If you haven't stopped doing this yet, stop using the pacifier. The baby must forget that you can suck on something other than your mother's breast. (You can still suck on the fist or fingers, but if you see that the baby sucks them very intensively for more than 5 minutes, offer him a breast).

First of all, it is necessary to analyze the quality of the mother's nutrition and try to rationalize it, since numerous studies have shown a direct dependence of the quality of breast milk on the composition of the mother's diet. With malnutrition, not only the production of milk suffers, but also its chemical composition. During the period of breastfeeding, the calorie content of the mother's diet should be 700-1000 kcal. above normal. The approximate daily diet of a wet nurse should consist of 200 g of meat, poultry or fish, 1 liter of milk or fermented milk drinks, 100-150 g of cottage cheese, 20-30 g of cheese, 500-600 g of vegetables, 200-300 g of fruit. Of fats, it is better to use butter (15-20 g) and vegetable oil (25-30 g). To correct the nutrition of a nursing woman, we can recommend a special dry milk product "Femilak-2", enriched with protein, vitamins and minerals.

What is the correct attachment of the child to the breast?

The child should grab the nipple and areola with an energetic “butting” movement of the head, raising the chest, and then, as if putting it on the chest moving down, on the wide-open mouth, with the tongue lowered under the chest, but not protruding. It is necessary that this capture be complete and deep so that the nipple is in the child's mouth almost at the level of the soft palate, i.e. the nipple together with the areola should actually fill the entire oral cavity of the child. Such a grip requires a very wide mouth, and if the baby does not immediately open his mouth correctly, then you can help the child by running the nipple along his lower lip, causing a reflex movement of the lips and opening of the mouth. Often the first reaction of the child to the mother's breast will be her licking, and only then the capture. With a correct grip on the chest, the child retains a wide-open mouth, from the side it is clear that the lower lip is completely turned out (it is pushed out by the front edge of the tongue lying on the lower jaw). The areola completely enters the baby's mouth if it is small. If the areola is large, then its capture is almost complete, asymmetrical. From below, the child captures the areola more than from above.

The effectiveness of suckling is determined not through the creation of negative pressure, but through the rhythmic massage of the areola, carried out by the movements of the child's tongue.

A baby sucks a bottle of any shape and with any hole size in the same way as an adult sucks from a straw: by creating negative pressure. The tongue is not involved in sucking from a bottle. There are no milking movements of the tongue. The tongue is usually located behind the lower jaw. Therefore, when a child who is used to sucking a bottle gets a breast in his mouth, he does not know what to do with it. In the extreme case of improper attachment, the nipple falls between the jaws, the child sucks the breast in the same way as a bottle. If the nipple is between the jaws, the mother usually experiences quite strong discomfort. The severity of pain depends on the thickness of the skin of the areola and the individual sensitivity of the woman. But in any case, the nipple is injured very quickly and often already on the second day after childbirth, with improper attachment, abrasions appear that turn into cracks if the attachment is not corrected. This situation is so common that many women consider cracking to be a necessary evil associated with breastfeeding.

Very “insidious” is a painless version of improper attachment. In this case, the nipple itself falls behind the jaws and lies on the tongue along with a small part of the areola. The child expresses it ... In this case, the mother does not hurt, because. the baby does not bite on the nipple. The baby even receives some amount of milk. But the breast does not receive sufficient stimulation and does not empty well. This gradually leads to a decrease in the amount of milk. Usually the child in this case does not put on weight very well. Or there is a gradual decrease in the increase. For example, in the first month the child added 900g, in the second - 600, in the third - 450. If the child is somatically healthy, feeds on demand, does not suck anything except the breast, then most likely there is a painless variant of improper attachment.

If a woman has never seen how a baby should suck, if no one has shown her how to properly breastfeed a baby and how he should suck, how to control the quality of attachment during sucking, it is very likely that she herself will attach the baby not quite correctly and not will be able to teach him the correct behavior at the breast. She does not know that there is something to learn here ...

In those distant times, when breastfeeding in our society was a common occurrence, and not a rare exception, every woman could help a mother who was starting to feed, correct her mistakes, and show the necessary techniques.

Currently, most women do not have the opportunity to learn motherhood practically. Many people read a variety of magazines or books for parents, and then try to care for their baby and feed him, based on the theoretical knowledge gained.

Unfortunately, proper attachment of a baby to the breast cannot be learned from books, magazines and pictures. Practical training is required. In maternity hospitals, where most of today's babies are born in industrialized countries, no one is doing this kind of training. The vast majority of health workers do not have the knowledge necessary for this. What is needed to successfully teach another woman is, first of all, a positive personal experience of breastfeeding. Nurses and midwives, like most modern women, do not have this experience. Incorrect attachment, being a widespread phenomenon, does not cause any concern on the part of the medical staff. Women are given only routine advice to heal abrasions or cracks, if any. If the baby and mother have painless improper attachment and the lack of milk associated with it, then the problem is solved by prescribing supplementary feeding and ends with a rapid transition to artificial feeding. Supplementation is given from a bottle with a nipple. The problem of improper attachment is joined by refusal of the breast.

When attaching a child, try to follow the general recommendations:

1. Breastfeed your baby ONLY IN A WIDE OPEN MOUTH! Do not try to push the nipple into the half-open mouth, most likely the child will clamp it in his jaws or he will not take it deep enough.

2. Try to act quickly, because. the child holds the mouth wide open for a second or two. If you didn't make it, wait until next time. Help your baby open her mouth by running the nipple over the bottom lip several times in a row.

3. Be patient. Very often I observe such mother's actions: mother takes the baby, tries to attach it, the child shows active search behavior, turns his head. Mom says: "He doesn't want to!" The instinctive behavior of the child, aimed at finding the nipple, is perceived by the mother as a negative response from an adult! Or, for example, it often happens when a mother touches the child's lower lip with her nipple, he squeezes his mouth. Mom again immediately says that the child does not want to suck. Meanwhile, if she continued the sentence, the baby would definitely open his mouth. After all, the child does not yet understand what they want from him. He does not know what is expected of him to open his mouth. Most children need at least two weeks to develop a stable habit of proper nipple latching, in response to their mother's suggestion!

4. Very often, having grasped the breast correctly, the baby, while sucking, slides onto the tip of the nipple and begins to bite it. Mom has painful sensations, but she endures them. Painful sucking is unacceptable! The child does not know that he is sucking incorrectly! He needs to be taught how to suck properly. If the baby begins to slide onto the tip of the nipple, the breast must be properly picked up (opening the baby's jaws, quickly putting the tip of the finger into the corner of the mouth) and reapplying.

5. Usually the baby slides onto the tip of the nipple if during sucking he does not touch the breast with his nose. In most maternity hospitals, it is recommended to hold the chest over the nose with a finger to make it easier to breathe. But the baby feels the chest with his face! He should touch the breast with his nose while suckling. This position should be maintained during the entire sucking and at any age of the baby. If he does not touch the breast with his nose, the newborn does not know that he is already in the “place”, and can make search movements with the nipple in his mouth! His mother immediately says that the child does not want to suckle. The baby’s nose is designed in such a way that it makes a “hole” in the chest with its tip and breathes through small triangular slits at the wings of the nose. Therefore, there is no need to hold the chest with a finger over the nose. Not only does this maneuver spoil the attachment, it also contributes to the occurrence of lactostasis in the upper lobes of the gland, because. Mom pinches the ducts with her finger and makes it difficult for the outflow of milk.

The baby should not be allowed to pull the nipple or pass it between the jaws back and forth. It is necessary to hold the head while trying to pull the nipple. And take the breast if the baby starts to “play around”, causing pain to the mother. An older child should not be allowed to turn his head with a nipple in his mouth if he wants to look at some object. The kid should follow the object of interest only with his eyes. Or he should let go of his chest and turn his head, if it is so necessary for him.

6. Separately, I want to note the “uncomfortable” forms of the nipple - flat, inverted, long, thick nipples. Any newborn that can suckle can adapt to any shape of its mother's nipple. A mother with an “unconventional” nipple should be more patient and persistent in teaching her baby to suckle properly. And she should make sure that her little one never gets any other "oral objects" because. they will in any case seem to him more comfortable to suck on than the mother's breast.

7. For a mother with flat and inverted nipples, the moment the baby draws the breast into her mouth is very important. If a bottle, pacifier or nipple gets into the baby's mouth, he stops making a retracting movement. Both the nipple and the pacifier are already elongated, they do not need to be retracted additionally. Therefore, when the mother's flat nipple gets into the baby's mouth, he simply opens his mouth and waits, does not try to draw it in. A mother with flat or inverted nipples should try to prevent other sucking objects from getting into her baby's mouth. If necessary, you can give supplements or your expressed milk from a spoon, syringe or pipette.

If the mother has long and (or) large nipples, it is very important for her to put them into her mouth as deep as possible, bringing the nipple itself past the jaws. In the case of a long nipple, the baby very often closes the jaws on the nipple or just behind the nipple. The areola practically does not get into the mouth, the baby does not express it, it turns out that he just licks the nipple. He cannot express milk in this way, the chest is not emptied and is not stimulated. There is a shortage of milk. A large nipple cannot be inserted into an insufficiently open mouth. The baby, having sucked on a pacifier or a pacifier, ceases to open his mouth wide, because. for sucking these objects it is absolutely not necessary to open the mouth wide.

A child with the smallest mouth can suck on his mother's breast with the largest or longest, or any other “uncomfortable”, from our point of view, nipple. It is only necessary to correctly put the chest into the mouth, show patience and perseverance. All in all.

In conclusion, I would like to say that by teaching a child to suckle correctly, a mother provides him with full, ideal nutrition in the future, and for herself - long-term stable lactation.

Basic rules for successful breastfeeding.
Conform to WHO/UNICEF recommendations

Every woman should know that her milk is the most complete food for her child in the first 6 months, and according to individual observations, during the first year of life. Therefore, she must follow the rules of successful breastfeeding in order to ensure health for her baby, as well as the best conditions for the growth and development of his body:

Early breastfeeding within the first hour after birth.

Eliminate pre-breastfeeding by bottle or other method to avoid unwanted imprinting and not to set the baby on any other feeding other than breastfeeding.

Joint maintenance of mother and child in one room.

The correct position of the baby at the breast, which allows the mother to avoid many problems and complications with the breast. If the mother was not taught this in the hospital, she should invite a specialist and learn it on purpose.

Feeding at the request of the child. It is necessary to apply it to the chest for any reason, giving the opportunity to suckle the breast when he wants and how much he wants. This is very important not only for the saturation of the child, but also for his feeling of comfort and security. In addition, the mother can offer the baby a breast up to 4 times per hour. There will be nothing wrong in the fact that the baby once again attaches to the breast. From this, both he and his mother will only benefit.

The duration of feeding is regulated by the child. You should not tear the baby from the breast before he releases the nipple.

Night feedings of the baby will ensure stable lactation and protect the woman from the next pregnancy. In addition, night milk is the most complete.

Lack of soldering and introduction of any liquids. If the baby is thirsty, it should be applied to the breast more often.

Complete rejection of nipples and bottle feeding. If a supplement is needed, it should only be given by cup, spoon, or pipette.

You should not transfer the baby to the second breast before he sucks the first breast. If the mother rushes to offer the baby a second breast, he will not get enough late milk rich in fats.

Avoid washing nipples before and after feeding. . Frequent breast washing removes the protective layer of fat from the areola and nipple, leading to cracking. The chest should be washed no more than 1 time and a day during a hygienic shower. If a woman takes a shower less often, then in this case there is no need for additional breast washing.

Refusal of frequent control weighings of the child. This procedure does not provide objective information about the nutritional value of the infant. It only irritates the mother, leads to a decrease in lactation and unreasonable introduction of supplementary feeding.

Exclusion of additional expression of milk. With properly organized breastfeeding, milk is produced exactly as much as the baby needs, so there is no need to express after each feeding.

A child under 6 months of age is exclusively breastfed and does not need additional nutrition and complementary foods. According to separate studies, he can be breastfed without prejudice to his health up to the age of 1 year.

Support for mothers who breastfed their children up to 1-2 years of age. Associating with women who have had positive breastfeeding experiences can help a new mother gain self-confidence and practical advice to help her breastfeed.

All young mothers who are determined to seriously and long-term feeding their baby with breast milk are concerned about lactation issues: will there be enough milk, will it be saturated enough, how to protect themselves from its disappearance and how to increase lactation during breastfeeding? Breastfeeding will always be a pleasant and useful moment, both for the mother and for her baby, if this process is properly organized and measures recommended by experts are taken to improve lactation (both qualitatively and quantitatively).

It has been scientifically proven that the hormone responsible for lactation in the body is prolactin, and its production depends entirely on the number of times the baby is attached to the breast. Thus, the more the child suckles at the breast, the greater will be its production.

For the same reason, it is not necessary to supplement the baby with water in the first months, mistakenly assuming that in this way milk can be “saved” for the next feeding. It is important that the child actively and well empties the breast (this will stimulate the production of the next milk portion), but if the baby’s appetite is interrupted, the sucking activity will decrease.

To increase the lactation of milk during breastfeeding, the baby should be fed at his request, the once recommended strict hourly application does not give the desired result. The night hours are very useful for increasing milk flow, so nighttime application should not be ignored.

Necessarily, a young mother needs time for sound sleep and rest, fatigue and excitement always have a negative effect on lactation. The fact is that in the female body, the hormone oxytocin is also responsible for the secretion of milk, and its production directly depends on the psycho-emotional state of the woman. The level of this hormone decreases with depression, nervous exhaustion, after stress.

All teas for lactation recommended today contain herbs aimed at normalizing the nervous state of a woman: lemon balm, chamomile, fennel seeds. This once again confirms that emotional calmness is needed to increase lactation.

Stimulates the secretion of milk, helps speed up the process and increase the amount of warm drink. A nursing mother should definitely drink tea with milk, rosehip broth, dried fruit compotes, herbal teas, just warm boiled water as much as possible.

To a greater extent, it is a warm drink that contributes to milk formation - neither hot nor cold. It is better to drink half an hour before the estimated time of the next feeding and immediately after it.

How to improve lactation

When considering how to increase the amount of milk while breastfeeding, do not forget about its quality. It should be saturated with all the necessary proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, useful trace elements. All this gives the milk to the mother's body, which needs to be saturated as much as possible.

A nursing mother does not need to eat for two in the truest sense of the word, you just need to balance your own nutrition.

Lactation experts have identified several types of foods that will help both increase milk during breastfeeding and saturate it as much as possible. The recommended list includes:

  • caraway. It can be chewed alone, eaten with bread or used as a spice in cooked dishes, added to herbal tea when brewed;
  • nuts, preferably almonds, you can also walnuts and pine nuts. They can be eaten every other day in very small quantities, this is a very fatty product that can cause severe constipation in a baby and provoke an accumulation of gases. In addition, a nursing mother should not eat salted and roasted nuts. It is good to make a drink from pine nuts: pour them with a glass of water overnight, leave until morning, boil, insist a little, drink, sweetening with a little honey;
  • ginger. It can be added to cooked dishes, used as a spice, but warm ginger tea gives the best effect;
  • Hercules. Such porridge is an ideal breakfast for a nursing mother, you need to cook it in milk, add dried apricots and an apple when the baby grows up a little - you can sprinkle it with grated nuts every other day;
  • broths from lean meats;
  • fish broths;
  • vegetable soups;
  • cheese and Adyghe cheese;
  • carrots (in any form);
  • barley coffee. This drink, in addition to a beneficial effect on lactation, will help those “coffee addicts” mothers who are hard pressed by the lack of their favorite drink;
  • lettuce mixed with dill, seasoned with olive oil - a particularly healthy dish for a nursing mother;
  • a cocktail of seeds: dill, cumin, anise and fennel fruit. All ingredients must be mixed, poured with boiling water, insisted, and then drunk, sweetened with honey.

Honey and anise can cause allergies in a baby, be sure to introduce them gradually, starting with a very small portion.

Increasing milk production with drugs

In search of effective ways to increase the amount of milk in a nursing mother, many women try to choose exactly the complex of drugs, considering it the fastest and most reliable. Today for nursing mothers are offered:

  • homeopathic remedies;
  • multivitamin complexes;
  • various dietary supplements;
  • teas to increase lactation.

Why and how does the chest hurt during and after breastfeeding

Of the entire list, the safest and without side effects are multivitamin complexes and teas. Dietary supplements are dietary supplements, for nursing mothers they are made on the basis of lactogenic herbs and contain royal jelly. The need for the use of these additives by young mothers, the benefits or dangers for the child's body - today all this remains a controversial issue among doctors. Of the homeopathic remedies, the most common is Mlecoin.

For such a question, how to add milk to a nursing mother, teas are also produced by many manufacturers, the most popular are Humana, HiPP, Lactavit, Nestik. They differ mainly in price, as for the main components, most often they include: lemon balm, anise, fennel, nettle, cumin. Nestik has chamomile and rose hips added to its composition, while Humana offers an improved taste due to blackberries and hibiscus extract.

You can make tea in order to successfully solve such a problem as increasing the amount of milk in a nursing mother, you can do it yourself at home, looking at the composition from a manufacturer you like. You can also add hawthorn and oregano to homemade tea.

Hello dear readers. The Internet is replete with requests on the topic: Products that increase lactation of breast milk. Wow, future and real moms, ek you wrapped. Either " lactation ", or "production of breast milk." Here's what the unfortunate Yandex should do with such an "overoiled" request? Look for someone who understands the topic. And, perhaps, he found the answer for you! Well, let's try to figure out if you need to increase lactation in general and how to do it.

Why do you think you don't have enough milk? Does the child not eat up, cries, often asks for a breast?

Colostrum, milk, its quantity...

The chest is soft and there is a small amount of light brown secretion? That's right, it's colostrum. In the first month after childbirth, the process of becoming lactation begins. It goes differently for everyone. And it doesn't start with milk.

After childbirth your glands do not produce milk, but colostrum. This is a nutritional concentrate, on the first day the baby needs 5 ml for feeding. Your glands produce up to 100 ml of colostrum per day, and the breast only seems empty. For the first 3 days, you will feed your baby with this invaluable concentrate.

When feeding, keep in mind that a child needs 10 ml of mature milk for each day of life. That is, on the 3rd day, for each feeding, the baby needs an average of 30 ml of milk. Of course, the amount of nutrient substance is variable and depends on the volume of the baby's stomach and its weight.

How much should a baby eat?

Child's ageThe amount of milk eaten per feeding, mlThe amount of milk eaten per day
3-4 days20-60 200-300 ml
Week 150-80 400 ml
2 weeks60-90 20% of the child's weight
1 month100-110 600 ml
2 months120-150 800 ml
3 months150-180 1/6 of the child's weight
4 months180-210 1/6 of the child's weight
5-6 months210-240 1/7 of the child's weight (800-1000 ml)
7-12 months210-240 1/8-1/9 of the child's weight

Then, on days 4-5, colostrum is replaced by transitional milk, and only from day 6 your glands are filled with mature milk. The rate at which colostrum is replaced by mature milk varies among women. Therefore, pediatricians recommend taking your time with ways to increase lactation. Feed your baby on demand. In the first month babies should literally "hang on the chest."

Neonatologists say that a child in the first 28 days of life wants to feed from 8 to 20! once a day, and this is the norm. If your baby requires a breast every hour, this does not mean that you have little milk or that it is not high in calories.

Remember that in primiparous women Mature milk will appear 6-10 days after natural delivery.

Now about fat

Your glands may produce enough secretions, but milk may not be available fat content. How to check the fat content of milk at home, we talk in a separate article. You can also donate milk for analysis. Read about it in ours on this site.

About other problems

At a nursing mother there are many worries and there is not always experience to determine whether the right amount of secretion is contained in the glands. Obstetricians in the maternity hospital are often faced with complaints about the lack of nutrient fluid and requests to supplement the baby with formula. But having tried to evaluate the breast, they discover that the woman has plenty of milk, she just does not know how to express it, just as she cannot properly give the child a breast. We have prepared separate materials about the rules of pumping and how to properly feed your baby.

lactation after operative delivery

This is the topic of a separate article. Because lactation after cesarean has a number of features. Let's take a look at them briefly..If the operation is performed urgently before the onset of contractions, you will indeed encounter a problem with breastfeeding (LF). Because during childbirth, a woman's body produces hormones that stimulate the production of milk secretion (prolactin) and its release (oxytocin).

In the absence of contractions, the body "does not know" that the baby was born and it is time to feed him. And it will take about a week until the mechanism of lactation "disinhibits". True, in this case, we are not talking about increasing the production of milk and products that stimulate it, but about the most complete contact with the child, stimulating the nipples with a small mouth, so that signals about the need for feeding enter the brain and start the entire breastfeeding system.

If you were unable to give birth to a child due to the weakness of labor and you underwent surgery during labor, after cesarean you will feed the baby in almost the same way as after a natural birth, perhaps with a slight delay (1-2 days). This happens for 2 reasons:

  1. The sucking reflex in children after cesarean is late.
  2. Competent imprinting (imprinting or learning, in this case, imprinting the sucking reflex of a newborn, the first application of the child to the nipple) occurs in isolated cases.

It is important that you put your baby to the breast in the first 30-60 minutes after birth. This will speed up the process of secretion of nutrient fluid and fix the sucking reflex in the baby. This is important since the peak of sucking activity in children occurs 25-40 minutes after birth. At this point, you need to attach the baby to the nipple and fix the reflex important for his survival. If the baby does not take the nipple or does not suck, but he is healthy, you need to insist and give the breast until he makes at least a few sucking movements.

Women after cesarean colostrum and milk may not be produced for the first few days. But that is not a problem for the baby. You may be surprised, but a newborn is able to do without breast milk for several days (according to some sources, up to 10 days, if the “wet diaper” test is positive, that is, the baby continues to urinate). True, he will have to drink water.

About insufficient secretion

Even with natural childbirth woman 2 problems may arise:

  1. Hypolactation - a decrease in the secretion of nutrient fluid after a period of normal production. It occurs when the baby is premature, the nipple is not properly grasped, the mother is unwilling to feed the baby, as a result of the baby’s illness or feeding according to the regimen, and also due to the frequent use of nipple substitutes (nipples and mixtures).
  2. Hypogalactia - a decrease in milk production during breastfeeding.

The last one could be:

  • early (develops in the first week after delivery);
  • late (occurs after 10 days);
  • primary, develops in puerperas as a result of drug stimulation of labor (oxytocin, estrogens or prostaglandins administered artificially);
  • secondary, occurs against the background of fatigue.

Secondary hypogalactia is easy to correct for relatives and husband. Let the young mother get enough sleep, help to apply the offspring to the nipple more often, and lactation will return to normal! In other cases, you will have to work hard.

What if the milk is really low or low fat?

What to do if the milk doesn't come? It is best to seek the advice of a lactologist. He will get acquainted with the causes of the condition and develop an individual scheme for the restoration of HB processes. We will introduce you to the physiology of a nursing mother and how to use them:

  1. For the process of production (production) of milk in a nursing mother hormone responds. Its maximum amount is produced at night between 2 and 4 hours. Feed your baby during this period to stimulate lactation.
  2. Sleep with the baby for the first year of his life, do not rush to shift the baby to the arena. Co-sleeping stimulates lactation.
  3. Spend more time with your child, tune in to GW. One of the reasons for the decrease in milk secretion is the psychological unpreparedness of the mother to feed. If you thought throughout your pregnancy that breastfeeding would ruin the beauty of the bust and did not want to feed the baby, problems may well arise with the development of milk secretion. Even if, taking the crumbs in your arms, you changed your mind. Therefore, when feeding, try to be as close to the baby as possible (skin-to-skin, eye-to-eye - this is the rule of successful lactation).
  4. Try to relax, use relatives for household chores. A catastrophically sleep-deprived mother will have a nutrient deficiency.
  5. Before feeding, drink warm tea, do a light breast massage, such as warm shower jets.
  6. Feed your baby on demand. During suckling, the baby stimulates the nipple receptors and they signal to the brain that it is necessary to actively replenish the secretion of the mammary glands.
  7. Eat small, frequent meals.
  8. Consult your doctor and choose lactogenic teas and homeopathic tablets (Apilak, fennel tea).
  9. Increase the amount of fluid you drink to 2 liters per day.

Teas pretty fast help to increase the production of mammary secretion, if your physiology allows it. Remember that if your mother fed you artificially and her glands could not cope with the production of the required amount of milk, there is a risk that you are predisposed to this phenomenon.

And, finally, about products that increase the quantity and improve the quality of the secret

Food breastfeeding mothers should be:

  • fresh;
  • saturated with minerals, vitamins, proteins;
  • vegetables and fruits should prevail over meat.

What kind exactly the products help to improve the product of the mammary glands, and increase its quantity? Let's see list.

BeveragesHerbs and spicesFood
SourFennelAdyghe cheese
walnut juiceCarawayDried fruits (dried apricots, prunes, raisins, figs)
carrot juiceAniseNuts (do not eat at 1 month, causes constipation and increases blood clotting)
Freshly squeezed blackcurrant juiceNettleBuckwheat (fried in a pan and eaten as seeds or consumed as porridge)
Meat broth (not fatty)HawthornOatmeal with dried fruits or nuts
Birch sap (natural)DillSeeds
Chicory drinks with milkGinger (be careful with this product, it can cause a burning sensation in the stomach for you and the baby, you need to add quite a bit to tea)Sesame
Dairy productsOreganoHoney (be careful with this product, the child may be allergic!)

With a deficiency of milk, some mothers are recommended yeast. Agree menu with a doctor. Some foods should not be consumed by you, for example, if you suffer from increased blood clotting (nettles and nuts will increase it even more) or gastritis (in this case, be careful with ginger).

Bee products, especially honey and royal jelly, are good for health, strengthen the immune system, stimulate lactation, improve the quality of mammary secretion, but can cause allergies.

Do not forget to coordinate the rules for preparing the intake of lactogenic decoctions, infusions, tea with your doctor.

This is where we conclude our review, we hope we helped you deal with the difficulties of lactation and you will invite your friends to the site using the possibilities of social networks.

The article contains information necessary for a nursing mother who is faced with the problem of a lack of milk.

When a young mother begins to lose milk or simply does not have enough, all possible methods are used. With a persistent struggle, it is quite possible to return the milk and feed the child with pleasure.

How to increase lactation of breast milk?

  • Follow the diet (read below)
  • Eating certain foods (read below)
  • Observe the drinking regimen: 2-3 liters of liquid, including soups. Try to drink water 10-15 minutes before feeding
  • Sleep well. When there is a shortage of milk, you should start taking care of yourself: rest, sleep with your baby
  • Shared sleep. Co-sleeping allows your baby to breastfeed whenever they feel like it.
  • Feeding on demand and increasing the number of applications. Offer your baby the breast more often than you have done before. So you give a signal to the body that you need more milk, as a result of which the hormone and milk will begin to be produced.
  • Night feedings are obligatory in the interval from 2 to 6 in the morning. At this time, the body produces more of the hormone prolactin, which is responsible for the production of milk. If the baby "hangs" on the chest all night, then this is the best way to increase lactation.
  • Taking lactagon drugs (read below)
  • Using folk methods (read below)
  • Additional pumping (read in detail in the article)

  • Warm shower. Taking a warm shower, there are flushes of milk
  • Do not be nervous. Against the background of stress and nerves, milk may become less

IMPORTANT: To increase lactation, you need to act comprehensively: use all the methods that are available to you

How to increase lactation in the first month?

In the first month, the body is still trying to figure out how much milk it needs to produce.

Therefore, in the first month, the best way is to attach the baby to the breast.

  • If the child sleeps a lot, then give him a breast in a dream

  • Don't wait 3 hours between feeds if you're feeling low on milk.
  • If there is not enough milk, and the baby sleeps a lot, then express milk
  • If in the first month you feed only once every three hours, then when the baby stops sleeping so much and wants to eat more, you will see a lack of milk
  • Other methods of increasing lactation in the first month also take place.
