Benedict XVI, Francis and Patriarch Kirill: a comparative analysis of material requests

The “interlocutor” found out what he was hiding and who was being driven by the Pallada yacht, which, according to rumors, was presented by Putin to Patriarch Kirill.

Aki on dry

The appearance of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church in public never goes unnoticed. And not only thanks to the high rank, but also in connection with the entourage that accompanies every appearance of the Patriarch in the people. Last week, Kirill arrived at a meeting with pilgrims on a yacht, which immediately got into the camera lenses. According to the most conservative estimates, the boat costs several hundred thousand euros.

“The yacht was rented and does not belong to the Patriarch,” the Moscow Patriarchate assured journalists.

According to Sobesednik, the rent of such a vessel costs from 14 to 100 thousand rubles per hour, not counting the services of the crew. A cruise from Moscow to Plyos can take 1-3 days, and in general, such a trip can cost from 500 thousand to 1.5 million rubles.

This time, the Patriarch did not use his Pallada yacht, which Russian Orthodox Church representatives call “modest transport” in their press releases, and catalog compilers call it an exclusive luxury vessel. "Pallada" was made to order by Dutch craftsmen and is luxurious in a presidential way. She was the President. In the sense that it was on the balance sheet of the Presidential Administration and was intended for Vladimir Putin's water movements. After 2 years of ownership, the Manager of Affairs sold the yacht to the Lukoil oil company, so that the oilmen would immediately give it to Patriarch Kirill, who is not indifferent to water and boat trips. Most of the time the yacht is moored at the St. Petersburg courtyard of the Valaam Monastery.

VIP prayer

"Interlocutor" traced where "Pallada" is now located. A special resource that controls the movement of all yachts registered the Pallada on June 28 in the port of Rybinsk, and on July 4 in the port of St. Petersburg. Now the yacht has been cruising on Lake Ladoga for several days.

- Who is now rolling along Ladoga "Pallada"? – the “Interlocutor” asked the press secretary of the Valaam Monastery Mikhail Shishkov.

– There are two types of visits to our monastery: official and unofficial. Everything that is official, we report in open sources. We do not cover informal visits. "Pallada" is used not only for walks and trips of the Patriarch, but also for meeting VIP guests who can come both openly and non-publicly - just to pray. These can be members of the government, and the first persons who at the moment do not want to be in the frame, as they come with a private purpose. Some of them also fly in helicopters. Our pilgrims have very different material status and different requirements for their safety.

Mikhail Shishkov did not name the names of the Pallada VIP passengers, but even without this it is clear that the circle of people whom the Patriarch can receive on board is not wide. The yacht has a living room with a home cinema and a bar counter, a dining room with a dining table for 8 people, several bedrooms with king size double beds, white carpets, white leather, luxury wood furniture. The estimated cost of the vessel is 4 million euros. The yacht is designed for comfortable accommodation of 8 people. The maintenance of a yacht of this class costs about 10% per year of its value. The ROC does not answer the question about the sources of money for the repair and maintenance of the vessel. They say that the Valaam monks, who were responsible for looking after the yacht, were at first shocked by the cost of it. But now, apparently, the issue is resolved.

The visit of Patriarch Kirill to the Ivanovo region on a yacht made a lot of noise / patriarchia.ru

Patriarch Kirill is among the non-poor people of our country. He travels around Moscow in an armored Mercedes as part of a motorcade, and a Breguet watch worth $100,000 was seen on his wrist. Not so long ago, there was a scandal with an apartment for 50 million rubles in an elite building on Frunzenskaya Embankment. Manufacturers of luxury Italian furniture, each piece of which costs several thousand euros, boasted that they furnished the patriarch's chambers to order.

The "Patriarch's Dacha" on the Black Sea near Divnomorskoye has also been in the center of public attention for several years now.

- Significant areas of the relict pine forest were cut down in order to free up the territory for the construction of residence facilities. It all ended with the erection of capital fences, the installation of electronic security systems, the taking of the territory of the facility under the control of the FSO so that even a mouse could not slip through and interfere with the rest of his Holiness, - Andrey Rudomakha, coordinator of the Environmental Watch for the North Caucasus, told the Sobesednik. - Residents of Divnomorskoye and vacationers were deprived of the opportunity to use the old Dzhankhotskaya road for walking and for recreation, the forest and the coast, seized under the residence.

“Each visit of the Patriarch to rest caused huge problems for local residents and vacationers - from blocking the sea area near the village to a ban on funerals with mourning music in the cemetery adjacent to the residence. To disguise the dacha of the Patriarch, they gave the long official name "Patriarchal and Synodal Spiritual, Administrative and Cultural Center of the Russian Orthodox Church in the South of Russia." In fact, this is the “summer residence of the Patriarch,” and this fact is documented,” the ecologists write in their appeal to the department of Rosprirodnadzor for the Southern Federal District, the prosecutor’s office of the Krasnodar Territory, and the regional Ministry of Natural Resources.

Smaller church hierarchs are also not content with God's grace alone, but enjoy all the achievements and benefits of civilization and the material world. The craving for luxury, conciliation with secular authorities, the friendship of the church elite with moneybags has more than once generated scandals within the church. Dissenting priests left the ROC.

“All this talk about who owns what and who has what is from envy, which is a sin,” Mikhail Shishkov expresses the point of view that prevails in the modern Russian Orthodox Church. - Whoever envies the monks and their lives - welcome to tonsure! You can answer with the words of John of Kronstadt, who said: how can I offend a person who gives me a gift, I must accept it with humility! The second question, John said, is how I will relate to this: if with prejudice, then this is sinful.

Yes, John of Kronstadt accepted gifts. But he distributed everything donated to monasteries and the needy.

/ And how are they?

What does the Pope have

Pope Francis became famous for being unpretentious in everyday life and gradually getting rid of the luxury inherited from his predecessors.

Residence. After inspecting his residence in the Vatican, the pope was dissatisfied: “Too luxurious. There is enough space for 300 people,” and ordered to reduce the number of rooms allotted for him. The throne, installed in the Clementine Hall, was replaced by the pontiff with an ordinary chair.

Popemobile/Global Look Press

Popemobile. The former head of the Catholic Church rode in a special armored car ("popemobile"), which was converted from a Mercedes-Benz SUV. The car of the new dad is also made to order, but on the basis of a fundamentally cheaper car - the Hyundai Santa Fe. The priest refused the glass bulletproof superstructure.

ring. The traditional papal ring of impressive size has always been made of gold. Francis decided to save money and ordered a gilded silver item from a jeweler.

Self service. Francis sometimes refuses the services of assistants and secretaries. At first, this led to curiosities. One day, the operator, who did not expect to be called by His Holiness himself, reacted: “Yes? Pope? And I am Napoleon.

will be rewarded to each according to his deeds. (Ps. 61:13; Matt. 16:27.)

I. And while he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, those who were with him came to him, and implored him, and asked him, saying: Tell us what are the signs of your coming and the end of the world, so that we may know and notice the time of your coming and taught those who come after us, to whom we preach the word of your gospel and whom we bring into your church, so that when they hear, pay attention and notice the time of your coming. (Matthew 24:3.) And our Lord answered us, saying: Beware lest you be deceived , (Matt. 24:5.)

As for the elect who have done good, they will come to me and will not see the fire that devours death. But the villains, sinners and hypocrites will stand in the depths of the darkness that does not disappear, and their punishment is fire, and the angels will bring their sins and prepare for them a place where they will be executed forever, each according to his sin. The angel of God Uriel will bring the souls of those sinners who died in the flood, and all those who lived in all idols, in every statue and all images of those who were called gods, on all hills, and on stones, and along the roads.

And in another place there were flaming flints, sharper than swords and all kinds of spears; and men and women, dressed in dirty rags, rolled over them in agony. These were those who were rich and relied on their wealth and did not spare orphans and widows, but despised the commandment of God.

And next to them were other men and women who were roasted and baked on skewers. They were those who had abandoned the way of God. And I rejoiced and thought that I understood what was written in the book of my Lord Jesus Christ. And I said to Him: Lord, would you like me to make three tabernacles here: one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah? (Matthew 17:4.) And He said to me in anger: Satan is fighting against you, and he has clouded your thoughts, and the blessings of this world overcome you.. (Compare Matt. 16:23.)

Pope Francis received a luxurious gift from Lamborghini - a supercar Huracan in an exclusive performance worth $ 200,000. However, given the age and status of the pontiff, this transport is, to put it mildly, specific, so a logical fate awaits a unique car.

The gift was presented during a meeting between Pope Francis and the management of Lamborghini. A special version of the Huracan for the pontiff was prepared by Ad Personam, a division of the company that personalizes Lamborghini cars for individual customer orders. The supercar for the pope features a special body color in white Bianco Monocerus with neat stripes in golden yellow Giallo Tiberino - this color scheme was chosen based on the white and yellow flag of the Vatican.

The press service of Lamborghini does not report any other alterations to the car. It is only known that this is a modification of the RWD Coupe, that is, the car has a rear-wheel drive (by default, the Huracan model is all-wheel drive, and the RWD version is designed to be even more driver-friendly). This means that the supercar is powered by a 5.2-liter V10 with a capacity of 580 horsepower, which allows it to accelerate to hundreds in 3.4 seconds, and a top speed of 320 kilometers per hour.

Obviously, such a powerful and, admittedly, cramped supercar is hardly suitable for the needs of the Pope, so the transfer of the car to Francis was rather a symbolic gesture: it is known that, by decision of the pontiff, the supercar will be sold at Sotheby's auction, the auction will take place on May 12 2018. Francis left his autograph on the hood, which, in theory, will increase the potential auction value of the supercar. Proceeds from the sale of the car will go to charity.

"Cadillacs" of Patriarch Kirill
Material from 2010 but still relevant!

Patriarch Kirill (second from left)

4,000 policemen guarded Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church in Dnepropetrovsk.

“We were not even allowed to look at Kirill through the windows! complained the inhabitants of the houses located next to the Sevastopol park (the patriarch laid flowers there at the mass grave of those killed in the Russian-Turkish war). - You couldn’t even go out onto the balcony or open the window! They ordered everything to be closed, and it was better for ourselves to leave the house for this time. Someone even saw snipers on the rooftops!

Dnepropetrovsk residents also noticed that the rocket launcher (already inactive, stands as part of the city’s diorama dedicated to the Second World War), which was located not far from the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral, where Patriarch Kirill served yesterday, disappeared somewhere. It turned out that she was covered with a camouflage net. […]

In Dnepropetrovsk, the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church was driven in a hefty black Cadillac Escalade jeep (its price is about 100 thousand dollars). And His Holiness ate at the restaurant "Khutorok", where Leonid Kuchma and Vladimir Putin once dined. The Russian high priest spent the night in the five-star hotel "Ukraine" (a day in the presidential suite costs $810). By the way, dozens of believers stood under his windows all night from Saturday to Sunday. The police, however, pushed them back from the walls and the porch of the hotel at a distance of 15 meters.

What His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow traveled in Odessa

Patriarch Kirill visited Odessa, where he was driven by a fairly solid motorcade, consisting of several Cadillac Escalades, Toyota Land Cruisers and S-class Mercedes, including an armored modification.

Well, you can still put up with a C-class car - well, he can’t go to the Kremlin in a Zhiguli, although ... Why not? And even a watch for a million dollars can be swallowed - men, they are obsessed with watches, even a priest, even an atheist.
But a yacht?
"Pallada", one of the most luxurious yachts in Russia, is moored at the Nikolsky skete of the Valaam archipelago, near the Valaam residence of the Patriarch.
A private pier has been built for it, and locals say that VIP guests ride on it (4 luxurious cabins each for 2 people)
When Patriarch Kirill traveled on the Pallada to the Yaroslavl and Rostov diocese, his press service, which covered this event through the secular media, delicately called the Pallada a "small ship."
Compared to cruise ships, the Pallada is really small: 32 meters long and about 8 meters wide. Its cost, according to various estimates, is $4 - 6.7 million. Annual maintenance of such yachts costs an average of 10 - 20 percent of the cost.
Before serving the Patriarch, "Pallada" belonged to the Administration of the President of Russia. Then Vladimir Putin was president.
They say that the yacht was specially built for the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, so that the head of state could adequately welcome guests of the sea capital of Russia on it. On the same yacht, Putin took part in the celebrations on the occasion of the 1250th anniversary of Staraya Ladoga.
The press reported that in 2005 Pallada was donated to the Russian Orthodox Church. But not directly by the president, but through an “intermediary”. From the property of the Manager of Affairs, the yacht was bought by Lukoil, and then the oil workers donated it to the church. Most likely, the donation scheme was built in advance at the highest level through mutual agreements between the leaders of business, church and government.

There is no distinction between a Jew and a Gentile (Rom. 10:12), between a man and a woman, between the poor and the rich, where not persons are taken into account, but deeds.

Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew.

And a little history about the Serbian Patriarch

The visitor accidentally looked at the feet of the patriarch and was horrified at the sight of his shoes - they were old, once torn, and then darned shoes. The woman thought: “What a shame for us Serbs that our patriarch has to walk around in such a rag!” The patriarch immediately said with joy: “See what good shoes I have? I found them near the urn when I went to the patriarchate. Someone threw it away, but it's real leather. I hemmed them a little - and now, they can serve for a long time ”

I have never seen Patriarch Pavel in person, although I have heard about him for a long time. I first came to Serbia in autumn 2006. I really wanted to see His Holiness, especially since, as far as I know, he was usually quite accessible. Not that I counted on an audience, I just wanted to look with my own eyes at the holy man of our days and approach him for blessing, and that would already be happiness. But it didn't. Just then, in the fall of 2006, his health deteriorated, and in subsequent times it got worse. Apparently, I was unworthy to see St. Paul.

It is known that the Serbian Patriarch, even being endowed with such a high rank, continued ascetic exploits, and tried to keep himself very modest, and this came out very naturally, without any deliberately shown shade. He walked around the city on foot or traveled by ordinary transport, among the crowd of people, was non-possessive, and ate as little as the ancient desert fathers, simply because he was like that. In the first photo, by the way, the photographer just captured him on an ordinary Belgrade street.

good boots
Mrs. Janya Todorovich told me a story that happened to her sister. She somehow got an appointment with the patriarch on some business. Discussing the case, she accidentally looked at the feet of the patriarch and was horrified at the sight of his shoes - they were old, once torn, and then darned shoes. The woman thought: “What a shame for us Serbs that our patriarch has to walk around in such rags, can’t anyone give him new shoes?” The patriarch immediately said with joy: “See what good shoes I have? I found them near the urn when I went to the patriarchate. Someone threw it away, but it's real leather. I hemmed them a little - and now, they can serve for a long time. ”

"I went to bed later"
There is another story connected with these boots. A certain woman came to the patriarchate demanding to speak with the patriarch on an urgent matter, about which she can only tell him personally. Such a request was unusual and was not immediately allowed, but the visitor's perseverance bore fruit, and the audience took place. Seeing the patriarch, the woman said with great excitement that that night she dreamed of the Mother of God, who ordered to bring money to the patriarch so that he could buy new shoes for himself. And with these words, the visitor held out an envelope with money. Patriarch Pavel, without taking the envelope, affectionately asks: “At what time did you go to bed?” The woman, surprised, replied: "Well ... somewhere around eleven." “You know, I went to bed later, at about four o’clock in the morning,” the patriarch answers, “And I also dreamed of the Mother of God and asked me to tell you to take this money and give it to those who really need it.” And he didn't take any money.

The commandment of non-possession

One day, approaching the building of the Patriarchate, His Holiness Pavel noticed many foreign cars standing at the entrance and asked whose cars they were. He was told that these were the bishops' cars. To which the patriarch said with a smile: “If they, knowing the Savior’s commandment about non-acquisitiveness, have such cars, then what kind of cars would they have if this commandment did not exist? »

Justice

Once, the patriarch flew somewhere on a plane for a visit. As they flew over the sea, the plane hit a turbulence zone and began to shake. The young bishop, who was sitting next to the patriarch, asked him what he thought about if the plane was about to crash. His Holiness Paul calmly replied: “For myself personally, I will take this as an act of justice: after all, in my life I have eaten so many fish that it is not surprising if they now eat me.”

Perhaps it would not be superfluous to also quote an excerpt from the conversation between Nikolai Kokuhin and Deacon Neboisha Topolic:
“By the grace of God, we have such a spiritual shepherd as His Holiness Patriarch Pavel… He leads an ascetic life and is for us a living example of an evangelical shepherd. He lives in Christ in the full sense of the word... As an Orthodox monk, he fasts, that is, he does not eat meat, and on Monday, Wednesday and Friday he has a very strict fast... Every morning he serves the liturgy in a small chapel, which is located in the building of the Patriarchate. There is no choir, and only parishioners sing ...

He himself dresses before the service and undresses himself after the service, he himself confesses the parishioners and himself communes them. He has been wearing a cassock and a cassock since he took the angelic rank (and this happened fifty years ago). And doesn't change them. He himself washes, irons and repairs them. He cooks his own food. Once he told me how he made good shoes out of women's boots, he has all the shoe tools, he can repair any shoes. He often serves in different churches, and if he sees that the priest's cassock or felon is torn, he tells him: “Bring it, I will fix it” ... Staying next to such a person is a great blessing for educating one's own soul, for spiritual growth.

At the same time, Patriarch Pavel is a doctor of theology (this title was awarded to him even before the patriarchate), he is the author of several books - a monograph on the monastery of St. translation into Russian.

Patriarch Pavel died at 10.45 am on November 15, 2009 after receiving the Holy Mysteries at the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade. The coffin with the body was transferred to the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel in Belgrade, where access to it was open around the clock. The line to the coffin did not dry out day and night, until the morning of November 19; a three-day mourning was declared in the country (November 16, 17 and 18), the day of the funeral was declared a non-working day.

Farewell to Patriarch Pavel.

MOSCOW, 5 October. "People's Pope" and "Prada Pope" are the nicknames given to the current and past pontiff. In 2013, Francis was named Person of the Year by Time magazine. Moreover, he was awarded the title for emphasized modesty and calls to donate more to the poor.

RBC, in turn, decided to compare the housing, fleet and wardrobe of the current pontiff with his predecessor and the Russian patriarch.

So, the current pontiff cannot be blamed for wastefulness. On the contrary, with the advent of Francis on the throne, the Vatican was not up to luxury. Although the three-story Magazzino luxury goods store, opened during the reign of Benedict XVI, is still in operation. Here you can buy an Armani suit, Swarovski jewelry, and Chanel perfume. There is even a separate corner with English church shoes. Goods in the store are not taxed, and only employees of the Vatican can become its customers. Dad himself does not go to Magazzino. He saves on himself and strongly advises his subordinates to follow the example.

It is noteworthy that immediately after accepting the dignity in 2013, Francis reduced the income of a number of employees, including several cardinals.

As for housing, usually after the election of a new pontiff, the 10-room papal chambers on the third floor of the Apostolic Palace are renovated in accordance with the taste of the new tenant. In 2005, when Benedict XVI ascended the throne, the work dragged on for three months.

In 2013, when Francis was elected pontiff, there was no need to repeat the procedure. The new pope never entered the Apostolic Palace. He settled in a modest three-room apartment in the Santa Marta guest house. The pontiff eats in the dining room of the boarding house, where he makes the only concession. Francis is served freshly squeezed juice, while the rest of the guests are served only packaged drinks.

But the difficulties of the housing problem bypassed the Russian patriarch. Back in 1994, the then Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad was given an apartment in the famous House on the embankment. After the scandal that broke out in 2011, which was dubbed a “dusty affair” (the rare library of the patriarch was covered with construction dust), Kirill admitted that he had not lived in a 5-room apartment overlooking the Cathedral of Christ the Savior for a week, but settled his second cousins there sisters. In 2009, when Kirill became patriarch, he had several residences at once: a pseudo-Russian-style tower in Peredelkino and a renovated old palace in the Danilov Monastery. But the patriarch rarely appears in them. And he lives in a Moscow residence in Chisty Lane.

The Pope spends his days off from work in the Vatican and, out of “excesses”, allows himself to sleep a little longer and spend a couple of extra hours reading books.

Despite the presence of the summer residence of the Roman popes - the Palace in Castel Gandolfo - Francis is rarely here, although it takes only 10 minutes by helicopter to get to the country palace. In addition, the pontiff opened it to the public. Last year, tourists were given access to local gardens, and in 2015, to the palace itself.

Meanwhile, the Russian patriarch several years ago called on Russians to spend their holidays “not in fun, but in solitude” in order to “free themselves from emotional and psychological burdens.” This summer, he himself chose to retire to a residence in the Krasnodar Territory. In addition, in September, photographs appeared on the network in which a man resembling a patriarch was captured during a boat trip on the yacht Azimut Magellano 43 Fly worth from 680 thousand euros.

Francis inherited from Benedict XVI got a Mercedes popemobile with a special armored cab. However, the pontiff preferred the Hyundai Santa Fe convertible to him. The Korean-made model was not equipped with a traditional protective capsule. Francis also has personal transport at his disposal. He himself gets behind the wheel of a modest Ford Focus or a 30-year-old Renault with a mileage of more than 300 thousand km.

Patriarch Kirill, in turn, moves to the Mercedes S-class. In an interview with the Ekho Moskvy radio station, when asked why His Holiness needs such a car, Father Vsevolod Chaplin replied: “He has such charisma in the church, if you like.”

As for accessories, in particular, wristwatches, Francis distinguished himself by the modesty of his requests. The current pontiff prefers plastic models from Swatch and Casio, the cost of which Bloomberg compared with the price of a paperback Bible. The watches on the wrists of John Paul II and Benedict XVI were many times more expensive. The first preferred Rolex, and the second - Calatrava Patek Philippe.

But the Russian patriarch several times got into the frame with a classic Breguet model with a gold case on his arm. The cost of such watches is estimated at $30-35 thousand.

For the first time, the model was noticed in 2009 during the visit of the patriarch to Ukraine. And in 2012, an unsuccessful attempt with the help of Photoshop to “remove” a similar watch from the hand of the head of the Orthodox Church at the protocol shooting turned out to be awkward. As a result, in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda, the patriarch admitted that he really does have expensive watches, but he does not wear them, but accidentally discovered them among the gifts after all the scandals.

"People's Dad" and "Prada Dad". Such nicknames were given to the current and past pontiff. In 2013, Francis was named Person of the Year by Time magazine...

Moreover, he was awarded the title for emphasized modesty and calls to donate more to the poor.

History remembers cases when popes led a more luxurious and dissolute lifestyle than Roman emperors. The favorite pastimes of Leo X (1513-1521) were hunting and ballet, on which he spent twice as much as the amount brought by papal estates and mines.

The pontiff even kept a tame white elephant, Happo. When Happo fell ill, papa began to sell indulgences right and left, so as not to spare money for the treatment of the beast.

The current pontiff cannot be blamed for anything like that.

Immediately after accepting the dignity in 2013, Francis cut the income of a number of employees, including several cardinals. RBC Style decided to compare the housing, fleet and wardrobe of the current pontiff with his predecessor and the Russian patriarch.

Housing

According to tradition, after the election of a new pontiff, the 10-room papal chambers on the third floor of the Apostolic Palace are being renovated in accordance with the taste of the new tenant.

In 2005, when Benedict XVI ascended the throne, the work dragged on for three months. The library of the apartments was being prepared to receive the rich collection of books of the new pope, consisting of 20 thousand volumes, equipped with a personal dental office and a piano room.

In 2013, when Francis was elected pontiff, there was no need to repeat the procedure. The new pope never entered the Apostolic Palace. Instead, he settled into a modest three-room apartment in the Santa Marta guest house.

The pontiff eats in the dining room of the boarding house, where he makes the only concession. Francis is served freshly squeezed juice, and the rest of the guests - only packaged drinks.

Vacation

The palace in Castel Gandolfo, the summer residence of the popes, was built in the 17th century. Almost all the pontiffs visited here. John Paul II spent a total of 6 of the 27 years of his papacy in Castel Gandolfo.

And Benedict XVI could not leave the summer residence for two or three months. As for Francis, he rarely comes here, although it takes only 10 minutes by helicopter to get to the country palace.

Palace in Castel Gandolfo

The pontiff spends his days free from work in the Vatican and, out of “excesses”, allows himself to sleep a little longer and spend a couple of extra hours reading books. And so that Castel Gandolfo would not stand idle in vain, the pontiff opened it to the public. In 2014, tourists were given access to local gardens, and in 2015, to the palace itself.

A few years ago, the Russian patriarch urged Russians to spend their holidays “not in fun, but in solitude” in order to “free themselves from emotional and psychological burdens.”

Automobile

As a legacy from Benedict XVI, Francis got a Mercedes papamobile with a special armored cab. But the new pontiff refused him.

“The new car has a lot of work to do, but please choose something modest. And if you like the artsy version, just remember how many children in the world are dying of hunger, ”said the head of the Catholic Church.

In the summer of 2015, he received a new car for official visits and appearances in front of the flock. They became a convertible Hyundai Santa Fe. Moreover, the Korean-made model was not equipped with a traditional protective capsule. Francis also has personal transport at his disposal. He himself gets behind the wheel of a modest Ford Focus or a 30-year-old Renault with a mileage of more than 300 thousand km.

Patriarch Kirill moves in a Mercedes S-class. In an interview with Ekho Moskvy, when asked why His Holiness needs such a car, Father Vsevolod Chaplin replied: “He has such charisma in the church, if you like.”

Wardrobe

Benedict XVI during his papacy managed to become a true legislator of the Vatican style. He received the nickname "Papa Prada" not by chance - the pontiff preferred bright red shoes sewn by an Italian brand.

In addition, Benedict, who had to wear exclusively black as a cardinal, brought bright colors to his new attire. He began to appear in emerald and purple robes, cassocks with gold clasps, and fur-lined headdresses.

The supplier of papal outfits at a price of several thousand euros apiece was the Gammarelli company, which has been sheathing the pontiffs since 1792. The exquisite boutique of the brand is located on Via dei Cestari near the Pantheon.

Benedict XVI

But who is definitely not to be found here is the current pontiff. Having taken the dignity, Francis declared that the time for carnival, silk and ermine was over. For shopping, he goes to the budget Euroclero and buys his favorite cotton white vestments here for a couple of hundred euros.

Watch

As for wristwatches, Francis distinguished himself by the modesty of his requests.

The watch is reminiscent of Le Réveil du Tsar from the Breguet Classique line

Catholicism and Orthodoxy

Both Orthodox and Catholics are Christians who believe in Christ and strive to live according to His commandments. Both of them have one Holy Scripture - the Bible. The true role model, the basis of all life for Christians, is Jesus Christ. Despite differences, Catholics and Orthodox profess and preach faith in the Holy Trinity and proclaim the same gospel to the world.

Both Catholics and Orthodox recognize that they are not the same thing, that Orthodoxy and Catholicism are different Churches. This difference is so significant for both sides that for a thousand years Catholics and Orthodox have not received communion together. At the same time, both Catholics and Orthodox look at the mutual division with bitterness and repentance.

The division of the single Church into Catholic (Western) and Orthodox (Eastern) took place at the beginning of the 11th century. Until then, the Church, represented by five local Churches, the so-called patriarchates, split. In June 1054, the mutual anathematization (excommunication) of the Pope of Rome and the Patriarch of Constantinople was proclaimed. A certain political tension of those years revealed the isolation of the religious life of the two parts of the former Roman Empire that had already taken shape and strengthened over the centuries. A distinctive feature of Catholicism is legalism and rather rigid structure. Rome and the Western tradition stood apart in relation to Byzantium, the difference in cultures, mentalities, and national characteristics was too significant. The final division occurred after the destruction of Constantinople by the participants of the fourth crusade in 1204.

What is the difference between Catholics and Orthodox?

First of all, they have a different understanding of the Church. For Orthodox Christians, the one, so-called Universal Church is manifested in specific independent, but mutually recognizing Local (territorial) Churches. At the moment, these are Russian, Constantinople, Jerusalem, Antioch, Georgian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Helladic (Greek) and other Churches. In total - fifteen. To be Orthodox means to belong to one of the Local Churches, to share the same faith with all, to mutually recognize the priesthood and sacraments (Baptism, Communion, Wedding, Repentance, etc.). Catholics recognize the one and only Church as an organizational structure - Catholic, subordinate to the Pope. Dioceses, churches, patriarchates are included in it as administrative units and are subordinate only and strictly to the Pope. There is a very significant difference between the Patriarch and the Pope, but more on that below.

There are differences in important doctrinal matters. For example, in the doctrine of God - the Holy Trinity, or rather, the Holy Spirit. Catholics also have their own teachings on the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and the infallibility of the Pope. These seemingly speculative subtleties have quite serious consequences in theological systems and practice of life.

Over the past centuries, not only have the cultural, disciplinary, liturgical, legislative, mental, and national features of the religious life of Orthodox and Catholics been strengthened, but also developed. Despite the secondary nature of many of them, overcoming disagreements in this area seems unlikely, because these features make up the real life of ordinary believers, for whom it is sometimes easier to give up philosophizing than this or that custom.

An important, albeit private, difference lies in the different attitudes towards sexual issues. Catholics are categorically against divorces, while the Orthodox, proceeding from no less lofty teaching about the family, allow divorces. In Catholicism, there is a practice of unmarried clergy, while in the Orthodox tradition, priests can be both married and monastic. Orthodoxy does not regulate the sexual life of spouses, in particular, it calmly looks at the use of non-abortive contraceptives. Catholics are categorically against any contraceptives.

Pope and Patriarch - what do they have in common?

It is very important to understand that both Catholics and Orthodox proclaim the equality before God of all Christians, regardless of the rank and the ministry that they perform.

Orthodoxy and Catholicism are Churches with a hierarchical structure. I have already spoken about the priestly ministry more than once. Both Catholicism and Orthodoxy know three degrees of priesthood - deacons, priests and bishops (bishops). The latter, in fact, own the fullness of the priesthood in their Church (eparchy). Both Catholics and Orthodox agree that the bishop is the successor and direct successor of the apostles, he is the head and guardian of the Church, possessing the fullness of church authority in matters of doctrine, worship and administration. The bishop governs the church with the conciliar assistance of the clergy and laity. Priests and deacons are assistants to the bishop, it is from him that they receive their dignity, and only he can prohibit them from serving or deprive them of their dignity. It is important for us that both the Pope and the Patriarch are essentially bishops. Both Churches do not know such a thing as a bishop over bishops, although in practice certain Popes, Patriarchs or even Emperors aspired to such a position.

Patriarch

From apostolic times, it so happened that issues that went beyond the competence of one bishop or went beyond the scope of his church (eparchy) were decided by Councils. For this, special authoritative bishops were needed, taking care of the life of several churches, having some special rights, convening councils and presiding over them. Such a pre-eminent bishop was honored as the first among equals. He could not act outside his diocese at his own discretion, without the advice of other bishops.

The centralization of church power in Byzantium led to the emergence of Patriarchs - bishops of the capitals or areas historically significant for Christianity (Constantinople, Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria), who had rights that went beyond the "first among equals". For example, the patriarchs themselves could subjugate individual churches or monasteries in other dioceses. Often, with the support of the Emperor, they intervened in the affairs of other dioceses and even carried out trials on bishops. But such a practice, although widespread and rooted for centuries, did not find a deep reflection in Orthodox church legislation, and since the disappearance of Orthodox empires has ceased to be significant and decisive. From this point of view, the Pope is perceived as nothing more than the Roman Patriarch.

Today, the Patriarch of one Local Church, for example, Constantinople, is in no way superior to the Patriarch of another Church, say, Georgian. The highest authority in each of the Orthodox Churches in all matters belongs and can belong only to the Council of Bishops. In the inter-council period, the Churches are most often governed by Synods - small cathedrals of the most authoritative (and in the Russian tradition, the most titled) bishops. The Patriarch carries out the operational management of the Church on current issues, but does not interfere in the internal life of the dioceses. At the same time, the Orthodox tradition does not recognize either the Council, or the Synod, and even less the Patriarch of infallibility or infallibility.

For example, in the statute of the Russian Church on the Patriarch in relation to other bishops, it is said that he has the right only to visit the dioceses in necessary cases. He has the right to give fraternal advice to bishops, to receive complaints against them and to give them the proper course. But the judgment of the bishops and the power belongs to the Council.

The patriarchate is essentially an administrative position with some special powers. But, the life of Orthodox local churches, Orthodox church legislation and history tell us that the patriarchate is not an obligatory attribute of the Church, and even more so is not a guarantor of the integrity of the Church, its safety or its prosperity. For example, the Greek (Greek) Church is governed by a synod chaired by an archbishop. The Russian Church from the time of Peter I until 1918 was also governed by a Synod, consisting not only of bishops, but also of a secular official representative of the emperor, endowed with enormous power. It can be unequivocally said that any Local Church has the right to determine itself in choosing the form and means of self-government. The main thing is unity with other Local Churches.

Pope

The Catholic Church, in turn, teaches that Christ placed the head over the assembly of the apostles, namely Peter, who created the Roman Church (community). Therefore, the Pope is not just a bishop of Rome, but the successor of the supreme apostle and Vicar of Christ Himself. The Pope, as Roman Pontiff, has full, supreme and ecumenical power over the Church, which he is always free to exercise. The Pope is the guarantor and foundation of the unity of the Catholic Church. The Council of Bishops is legitimate and has power only in union with the Vicar of Christ as head. The Council, in fact, is nothing more than an advisory body.

The position of the Pope in relation to bishops is far from what can be called "first among equals". The Roman Pontiff has authority not only over the entire Church, but also over each of the dioceses and local Churches. The Roman Church includes several of its patriarchates, for example, Alexandria (of the Coptic rite) and Antioch (of the Syrian rite). These are the churches that, having retained their cultural identity and doctrinal tradition, became part of the Catholic Church, recognizing the Pope as their head. Each bishop or patriarch performs his ministry only in communion with the Roman Pontiff. Only the Pope has the right to appoint bishops, which is done, in fact, by him, though with the participation of one or more bishops.

Catholics teach that Christ endowed the Pope with the blessed gift of infallibility (infallibility) in matters of faith and morals, which he possesses as the Supreme Shepherd and Teacher of all believers. Doctrine epistles, sentences and decrees of the Roman Pontiff are not subject to appeal or annulment, and no appeals are filed against them. The Council of Bishops also possesses infallibility, but on the condition of unity with Peter's Successor. This infallibility is essentially identical with the concept of divine revelation.

Catholicism is impossible and inconceivable without its High Priest - the Pope. He is a kind of guarantor of the existence of the Catholic Church.
