Four unusual causes of coughing. View Full Version

Hello! Tell me please! (child 1 year 7 months) The child had 3 attacks of bronchial obstruction in 4 months. The first attack in January 2015 began with a runny nose (there was no temperature, the gums were swollen). After a couple of days, a wet cough began, the lungs were clear. Treatment was prescribed: rinse the nose, instill miramistin, lazolvan syrup. A few days later there was an attack of coughing (cough is wet), he breathed through the ribs, on exhalation vulture. An ambulance was called. They breathed soda. Within an hour, the child returned to normal. Treatment was prescribed: inhalation with mineral water, drinking mineral water, rinsing the nose, suprastin. The second attack in February 2015. Against the background of an absolutely healthy child, a dry cough began; By the time the ambulance arrived, things got much better. Have made inhalation pulmicort. Appointed a few days to drink suprastin. Third attack in March 2015. It all started with a slight cough (dry). The next day, the cough became more frequent (wet), the temperature rose to 37.5. The pediatrician diagnosed Laryngitis. Treatment was prescribed: antibiotics Suprax (taken for 4 days), Befiform, Suprastin (taken for a week), inhalations with Pulmicort (4 days), Ascoril syrup (5 days). By the evening the temperature rose to 38.5, kept for 3 days. On the third day there were rashes on the skin - the pediatrician diagnosed chickenpox (rashes lasted 5 days, not frequent, but large). Against the background of chickenpox, there was a cough (wet), infrequent, slight runny nose, lymph nodes increased. They washed the nose, made inhalations with mineral water, drank mineral water. A few days later he had a coughing fit. The cough was wet, breathing through the ribs, wheezing on exhalation. They called an ambulance. They breathed soda, inhaled berodual. The attack was over in 30 minutes. We were also at the ENT, diagnosed us with Adenoids of the 2nd degree. Treatment: nasal spray Avamys at night, Kollargol 2% alternate with thuja oil, Lymphomizot 3 times a day. At the moment, the child is coughing, dry cough 1-2 times a day, but prolonged. I noticed that the cough begins when the child wants to sleep, but cannot sleep. They took a picture of the lungs, everything is in order. Were at the allergist, they said that it was an untreated catarrhal disease, they prescribed inhalations with pulmicort, drops of Zirtek. Were at the pulmonologist, upon examination revealed that in the lungs breathing is hard, it is carried out in all departments, with forced breathing, an elongated whistling exhalation. Treatment was prescribed: inhalations with berodual, after 15 minutes with pulmicort. Drops Zyrtec. After a few days of treatment, the child got better. But the cough remained, became not long and not every day. I had a general Ig E blood test - the result was 232 IU / ml. What can happen to the child? Whether has sense to hand over analyzes on worms?

In the cold, our households can repeatedly be exposed to mild colds and ailments. But if you notice that the child has an uncharacteristic cough, it is time to sound the alarm. Surely this is something more serious than a common cold. When should you be concerned? We will talk about this in the materials of the next publication.

barking cough

Your child went to bed with a stuffy nose and slept peacefully for several hours. But in the middle of the night you were awakened by a loud sound, reminiscent of the boisterous barking of dogs. You jump up to the bed and see that the baby is unable to catch his breath.

This symptom may indicate croup, a viral disease that affects young children (6 months to 3 years). This disease causes inflammation of the larynx and trachea, raging during the cold period (from October to March). In the afternoon, as a rule, the cough disappears. Hiding, he seems to be waiting in the wings. With the onset of night, severe attacks are repeated. Sometimes when inhaling, a piercing whistle is heard from the child's larynx. A similar ailment more often overtakes children who live in a cold apartment.

Walking in the cold will bring immediate relief. Cold air relaxes the airways. If you don't feel like going out in the middle of the night, then put your coughing baby in a tub filled with hot water for 20 minutes. Warm moist air improves breathing. If the situation does not improve, call an ambulance.

Mucous cough

Have you noticed that the child coughs up mucus. This is accompanied by a runny nose, sore throat, poor appetite and tearing. Such symptoms may indicate a long-term (two-week) cold or are its initial stage. On average, children may be exposed to colds six to ten times a year.

Make an appointment with your pediatrician, but don't insist on antibiotics. In this case, they are powerless. Mucous cough will disappear as soon as you clear the nasal passages. If the child is unable to blow his nose, use saline solutions for flushing and special devices for pumping out mucus.

Dry cough at night

A regular dry cough at night may indicate asthma or chronic respiratory disease. The lungs become inflamed, which leads to constriction of the channels and excess mucus, resulting in a cough. Some parents mistakenly believe that characteristic wheezing from the throat indicates asthma. However, sometimes the only symptom of this disease can be a dry night cough.

If you suspect asthma, contact your pediatrician. Already at the age of 5, this disease can be detected. The child blows into a special tube that checks lung function. In younger children, it is difficult to confirm the diagnosis immediately. Usually, after examining the crumbs, parents are interviewed in detail and raise the history of allergic diseases of relatives.

Weak cough

A child for the first time in his life refuses to play and is overly depressed? This is accompanied by a weak, slightly hoarse cough, high fever, muscle pain and runny nose. An acute viral disease (influenza) affecting the respiratory system took over the baby's body. Be aware that the influenza virus in children has a long incubation period. They can be infected for several days before the symptoms show up so clearly. This disease can be transmitted from a classmate who sneezed at a distance. Through microscopic droplets, the influenza virus will quickly spread throughout the room.

Give your child plenty of fluids and antipyretics before seeing the pediatrician. If the child is often sick, it is better to play it safe and resort to vaccination.

hoarse cough

A few days after the child catches a cold, he develops a hoarse cough accompanied by whistling sounds. In this case, breathing can be intermittent and rapid. Such symptoms may be signs of bronchiolitis, inflammation of the smallest passages in the lower respiratory tract. When swollen, the bronchioles fill with mucus. This makes it difficult for the baby to breathe. The disease is common in babies under the age of one year.

When such manifestations are detected, one should not hesitate. It is necessary to contact the pediatrician for a referral for an X-ray examination. In this case, blood tests are also shown. In especially serious cases, the baby should be placed for treatment in a hospital.

Whooping cough

Such attacks can be noted in children who have already had a cold for more than one week. Attacks of convulsive cough are observed with a high frequency on one breath (up to 20 spasms). Between the attacks themselves, breathing is accompanied by strange sounds. Whooping cough is the most likely cause of these symptoms. Children under 6 years of age receive a dosed vaccine against this disease. However, in the intervals between vaccinations, until immunity has developed, the child runs the risk of "catching" whooping cough. Especially at risk are infants under the age of six months, as their lungs do not yet have sufficient strength. In this regard, the symptoms of the disease are not so pronounced, which makes it difficult to detect.

If whooping cough is suspected, a child under six months of age needs urgent hospitalization. Older children recover from antibiotic treatment. However, other family members will need preventive measures in order to avoid this disease. Remember that whooping cough is contagious, and immunity begins to weaken as early as 5 years after vaccination.

Moist cough

With a prolonged cold, the child may become worse and worse. At the same time, the baby is tormented by a wet cough with sputum and mucus, the elevated body temperature does not subside, and breathing is speeded up. Probably, the crumb was overtaken by pneumonia. In pneumonia, a virus or bacteria infects this organ, completely filling it with fluid. Pediatricians cannot always visually diagnose this disease, so an x-ray or an oxygen level test will be needed to show the full picture. Unlike viral pneumonia, bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics. Most often, the child requires hospitalization.

Hello

I know that I need to see a doctor, but which one? Our local therapist will 100% prescribe all the same ACCs.

Please help, thanks in advance

01.11.2009, 12:03

Start with an ENT doctor.

02.11.2009, 00:03

I was, though at that time the cough was not so frequent, although of the same type. he said he didn't find anything

To an allergist, but I have never had allergies, and I would not say that this is due to some special conditions

On one forum, they wrote to me that this is supposedly a reflux of bile, it is annoying, but it’s not clear which doctor this is for

How do I subscribe to a thread to get notifications?

14.11.2009, 20:34

help me please

Please tell us what it is, why bile gets into the throat, and which doctor is it?

Now I understand why the "cough" is so painful - there is nothing to clear your throat, apparently a reaction to these same droplets.

I couldn't find the gastroenterologist section in the forum :(

15.11.2009, 01:57

I do not know of such a situation that bile regularly, like this, by itself, first enters the stomach, then into the esophagus (without vomiting).
However, gastro-sophageal reflux is possible, acidic contents of the stomach and without bile will cause irritation of the mucous membrane and cough.
There is no section "gastroenterology", describe your problem in Therapy

Hello

Some strange cough worries me, it starts with a strange sensation in the throat - not perspiration, but at the very entrance (almost the end of the sky) like itching, it doesn’t itch, but discomfort - if I start coughing after a while it stops, if not, it’s wildly unpleasant , tears flow, unbearably endure.

But the problem is that if you cough strongly, then it’s generally terrible, sometimes I even catch my breath.

For me, coughing is a popular problem, and resp. I had lungs, but such a cough occurred once or twice during the whole cold. Now this is my third week. Broncholithin has always helped before. This time I drank it, and ambrobene, and some other powders, now I drink ACC a little easier - a cough of the same type, but at least clears my throat.

There is no allergy. It happens that coughing intensifies the itching, I can even get out of the subway / minibus, I have such a strong cough that it’s already embarrassing.

Please tell any doctor what this strange symptom is - not in the chest, the cough begins as usual, but at the entrance to the throat. It’s as if I’m trying to cough up a foreign object, no matter how the sand would get there.

/However, the presence of gastro-sophageal reflux is possible, acidic contents of the stomach and without bile will cause irritation of the mucous membrane and cough./

I really had something with the esophagus, did a gastroscopy. Then, in my opinion, nothing was even appointed. But what provokes the worsening of the course of the disease? And how to mitigate it?

thanks in advance

Your age?
What started the cough? Was there a fever, nasal congestion, runny nose and other signs of SARS?
Does the cough get worse when lying down? Is there heartburn?

Is there nasal congestion?
Does coughing interfere with sleep?

16.11.2009, 22:30

Your age?

What started the cough?

I can't find any particular reason. He's been there before with a cold, but rarely. If you cough hard, it gets worse. It seems to increase if the air is dry, but maybe it seems to me. If you start chewing gum during a cough, it will intensify very much.

Was there a fever, nasal congestion, runny nose and other signs of SARS?

No. Perhaps a slight runny nose, but during cold weather I almost always have it.

Does the cough get worse when lying down?

Is there heartburn?

No. The current that I looked at Wikipedia what it is, in my opinion, it never happened, unless in childhood I don’t remember

Cough flare-ups in spring/autumn? At home/outside?

No, seizures are not tied to anything. Start coughing strongly = intensify the attack, stop drinking water in small sips

Is there nasal congestion?

Does coughing interfere with sleep?

No. If I start to cough strongly, it will intensify, but then it goes away. Sometimes it happens at night but rarely

Tell me, can't he have a psychological character? I understand this is nonsense, but in my opinion sometimes it starts when I do something uninteresting, I have a habit of holding my breath in a hurry. But maybe it just seems to me.

Thanks for the questions and thanks in advance for the answer.

Do you smoke?

16.11.2009, 23:30

Do you smoke?

Are you taking any medications?

Examination of the therapist, ENT doctor, X-ray of the chest.

The therapist and ENT were about a month ago, an x-ray in April, everything is ok

The cough almost disappeared, or rather, I found how to deal with it, drink. seizures are much less common, but still I want to know what it is

16.11.2009, 23:33

Also try to avoid contact with tobacco smoke, "strong" perfumes, paint and varnish products, household chemicals for a period until the cough goes away.

16.11.2009, 23:52

Perhaps it will help to inhale warm humidified air.

Where can I get it ... but not for me yet, some water helps. it is as if it is not connected with the lungs, I say, the sensation is in the throat. no sensations in the chest, as happens with a normal cough

Also try to avoid contact with tobacco smoke, "strong" perfumes,

Well, I always use perfume, but I don’t see any connection, I can sprinkle at home and nothing, and in the evening, when everything has disappeared, cough

Paint and varnish products, household chemicals for a period until the cough passes.

By the way, does the cough get worse after laughing?

That is, it is not connected with the stomach, is it something with the respiratory organs?

16.11.2009, 23:53

Does anyone know why drinking water helps me?

16.11.2009, 23:58

For sore throats, sucking or chewing stimulates saliva production, which in turn reduces irritation. Any warm liquid has the same effect.
For the same purpose, I advise you to breathe warm humidified air. It's actually easy to do. It is enough, for example, to open hot water in the bathroom.

It is connected with the stomach or not - is unknown. 40% of people with extraesophageal manifestations of gastroesophageal reflux disease do not have heartburn. In your case, it is impossible to determine clinically. What did you have according to FGDS?
You can also use a trial intake of drugs that suppress secretion.

Cough is a reflex mechanism for the removal of foreign bodies or substances that have entered the respiratory tract. Cough has a protective character, without it we would simply suffocate, choking, for example, when drinking plain water. A special cough center in the brain makes us cough. From it, nerve impulses travel to receptors in the airways and back. Cough is a sign of many diseases, primarily infectious and non-infectious lesions of the respiratory system. However, coughing can also occur if there is a breakdown at any stage of the path from receptors to the brain. Consider the unusual causes of coughing.

Many people think that coughing is a symptom of lung disease, but there are causes of coughing that are completely unrelated to the lungs. Moreover, it can last a long time and be painful for the patient. Such patients take expectorants for a long time, but they do not work at all. The most common of the unusual, that is, not related to the respiratory tract, causes of cough is hiding in ... the stomach. This cause is quite common and is perceived by most people as a lung problem.

In a healthy person, the acidity of gastric juice has a certain indicator, and the valve (sphincter), which prevents food from the stomach from returning to the esophagus, fits tightly. Conversely, excess acid and sphincter deficiency can cause stomach contents to back up into the esophagus, a condition called gastroesophageal reflux. From this arises heartburn- irritation of the lower part of the esophagus, where cough receptors are also located. Therefore, the person begins to cough. What is the treatment for cough in this case?

First, there are foods that provoke sphincter insufficiency. This is all that contains menthol and mint, which itself helps to relax the sphincter muscles. This includes chewing gum with menthol or mint. In addition, the work of the sphincter is disrupted by everything that greatly expands the stomach, namely carbonated drinks. Finally, the sphincter is affected by excessive consumption of chocolate and coffee. It is clear that it is better to refuse all this. Secondly, in such cases, the best cough remedy is drugs that lower the acidity of gastric juice. These are proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole, which have been used for a long time and are very effective drugs.

Runny nose as a cause of cough

In some cases, in particular, with allergic rhinitis, a fair amount of mucus can accumulate in the nasal cavity, which also enters the nasopharynx. This also happens in cases where a person has the habit of not blowing out excess mucus, but drawing it into himself, constantly sniffing. Having reached the lower part of the nasopharynx, the mucus irritates the cough receptors located there. There is a cough. Moreover, it is long and hoarse, which intensifies in the prone position. This condition is called nasal congestion. At the same time, the lungs are healthy, and the cause of the cough is neglected, untreated runny nose. What can we do to treat a cough due to a runny nose?

The first is, of course, to see a doctor about a runny nose. And he, most likely, will advise doing a nose wash, in which all the mucus comes out. Also, as a cough remedy, you can use vasoconstrictor drops in the nose. They will relieve swelling and relieve both a runny nose and a cough at the same time. In addition, it is useful to be able to blow your nose correctly. First of all, you need to blow your nose with your mouth open, then the pressure in the Eustachian tube will not increase and your ears will not be blocked. You need to blow your nose in turn, first with one, then the other nostril. In this case, it is best to use disposable paper napkins, which can be thrown away after blowing your nose. Really, what's the point of keeping dried slime in a handkerchief until the next time? Thus, in this case of an unusual cough, it is not the lungs that need treatment, but the nose.

It is the second most common cause of cough after lung disease. Cough can occur with heart failure, which in turn is caused by coronary disease or heart disease. In this case, the heart works poorly, slowly, and blood stagnates in the pulmonary circulation. The liquid part of the blood leaks into the lungs and contributes to a cough that worsens when the person lies down. Therefore, such patients prefer to sleep with several pillows under their head and back. It turns out that the lungs are generally healthy and can perform their function - unhealthy heart. And such a patient can not only cough, but also suffocate - a condition that is familiar to doctors under the name of cardiac asthma.

Another cause of coughing caused by a pathology of the heart is called pericarditis, that is, inflammation of the “shirt” that the heart is dressed in. Inflammation irritates the nearby pleura, which is why a cough occurs. Treatment of cough in these cases begins with the treatment of pericarditis. If a person cannot sleep horizontally, as he is suffocating, he must first do an ultrasound of the heart to rule out defects. As you know, the cardiologist is engaged in the treatment of the heart, and the means that he prescribes will simultaneously work for the treatment of cough.

Very rarely, cough is associated with the pathology of the cough center itself. This happens, for example, when a tumor or cyst grows in this area. It is very difficult to diagnose such a cause of cough. And usually the patient goes through more than one specialist before the diagnosis is made. While delaying cough treatment in this case is very dangerous. Fortunately or unfortunately, brain tumors present with symptoms other than coughing. Therefore, sooner or later, but better sooner, the patient will get an appointment with a neurosurgeon-oncologist, and then on the operating table. Not every oncological disease can be successfully cured, but it is well known that the earlier the diagnosis is made, the higher the chances of recovery. That is why, with an incomprehensible cough, it is best to quickly go to a doctor who will figure out what the reason is and save you from both the disease that causes coughing and the cough itself.
