Ipad air what on the account. What models of Apple iPad exist. 5" iPad Pro

Apple iPad tablets first appeared on the world market in 2010 and in 4 years managed to release 6 generations of the device:

  • 2010: iPad 1 (2 modifications) * .
  • 2011: iPad 2 (3 modifications).
  • 2012: iPad 3 (3 versions).
  • 2012: iPad 4 (3 modifications).
  • 2013: iPad Air (2 modifications).
  • 2014: iPad Air 2 (2 modifications).

Today we will talk about each of them, taking into account their features, advantages and disadvantages.

* “Modification” means equipping tablets with Wi-Fi and additional communication modules (the ability to use a SIM card).

The first prototype of the iPad appeared at Apple in the early 2000s and was called "prototype 035". According to Jonathan Ive, between 2002 and 2004 there was an active development of the external concept of the device, which later became the basis for the creation of the first generation iPad.

Photos of the prototype were made public during court cases with Samsung as evidence that the development of the device was carried out long before the rights to the patent (2005). By the way, the court made a final decision only by 2012 and ordered Samsung to pay Cupertino a tidy sum for illegal borrowing of ideas.

Returning to the 035 model, we can immediately note that it is much thicker than modern tablets and lacks the usual Home button. There is also an opinion that a full-fledged OS was installed on board the prototype as on Mac computers.

The first iPad was introduced on January 27, 2010 in San Francisco. The project could be called a pilot: Apple implemented a minimum of its ideas and gave the buyer time to evaluate the new offer on the tablet device market. Critics immediately drove the device into dusty nooks and crannies for the lack of a camera, a weak processor and iOS capabilities. But fans appreciated the new apple device at its true worth - on the first day, sales exceeded 0.5 million devices, and by the end of the year a total of 7 million gadgets were sold.

The first generation iPad is strikingly different from its future reincarnations: clear edges, prominent walls and an impressive thickness of the device (13 mm) immediately catch the eye. Moreover, the iPad 1 is the heaviest tablet in the entire Apple line. Its weight is 680 grams.

The lineup consisted of two proposals: Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G. The tablet assumed three variations of memory (16, 32 and 64 GB) and one color scheme - a black front panel and a silver body.

The first generation iPad runs on the A4 processor. The total amount of RAM is 256 MB. Its power is enough for surfing the Internet, social networking, business correspondence, note-taking and supporting the operation of simple applications. Unfortunately, modern games are too tough for him. The latest supported OS is iOS 5.1.1.

It is also worth considering that the “pilot iPad” received only an accelerometer and a light sensor.

Sales End Date: Spring 2011.

second generation iPad

iPad 2 was introduced on March 3, 2011 in San Francisco. It is noteworthy that this is the last presentation, which was attended by Steve Jobs. World sales started already on May 11, the tablet reached Russia only by May 27, 2011. The hype during the sales was so strong that there was even a demand for speculators who sold their place in line at Apple stores. According to some rumors, the bet for the first places reached 800 US dollars. According to analysts, 70% of iPad buyers purchased a tablet for the first time, indicating an increase in Apple's share in the high-tech market.

The second-generation iPad got rid of the protruding back cover - the body became smooth and streamlined. The speaker has moved to the back of the device, where it is securely hidden under the protection of a mesh with perforated holes. Before the advent of the iPad Air, it was considered the thinnest (8.6 mm) and lightest (from 601 to 613 grams) in the line of apple tablets.

The lineup repeated its predecessor: devices with a Wi-Fi module and gadgets that received mobile Internet in addition: GSM and CDMA models.

The second generation iPad received a faster Apple A5 processor with 512 MB of RAM. Moreover, the second batch of iPad 2 Rev A tablets was released. The main difference was in the modification of the processor: Apple actively defended itself against jailbreak lovers. It was possible to distinguish the parties only after connecting the device to a computer. The technical perfection of the device was expressed in the appearance of a gyroscope, rear and front cameras.

iPad 2 received a little more color variety: a silver body and a choice of white / black front panel. The amount of internal memory remained unchanged.

Sales end date: spring 2012 (for 16 and 32 GB), autumn 2014 (for 16 GB model).

Third generation - The new iPad

March 7, 2012 was the date of the official presentation of the third generation iPad tablet to the world. The official name of the tablet caused understandable bewilderment. Phil Schiller after the presentation, answering journalists' questions, said: Apple just wanted to do something unpredictable. According to other sources, Cupertino decided to abandon the numbering of products so that the user does not have an associative series: "the more the number is, the better the device." World sales began already on May 16, in the Russian Federation the tablet appeared at the end of May. It is believed that for our country the start of sales was a failure. Among the main reasons was the active activity of resellers and the subsequent sale of "gray products".

Externally, the iPad 3 is fully consistent with the tablet of the second generation. It was possible to distinguish them only by the model number, which was located on the back cover. The gadget has become heavier by more than 50 g, which users immediately felt during long-term work with the device. Moreover, many noted that the iPad is “the hottest” among the entire Apple line - the rapid heating of the case also caused discomfort during prolonged use of the device.

The main advantages of The new iPad are:

  • Chic Retina Display, which supported a resolution of 1536 by 2048 pixels per inch. At the same time, the overall color saturation increased by as much as 44%;
  • Work in 4G networks;
  • Rear camera performance has been improved to 5 mpx;
  • Full HD video;
  • For the first time, it became possible to recognize faces during video shooting, as well as additional image stabilization sensors;

The new iPad is powered by the Apple A5X processor. The RAM capacity has increased to 1024 MB. It first appeared the voice assistant Siri and the ability to dictate.

The offered memory sizes (16, 32 and 64 GB) and color schemes (black/white silver) remained unchanged.

Sales end date: November 2012.

4th generation - iPad with Retina Display

On October 23, 2012, another presentation of new products from Apple took place, where the iPad with Retina Display was introduced. In fact, it was a well-finished version of the iPad 3. It is noteworthy that for the first time in many years, the presentation was held in San Jose.

The main external difference between the iPad 4 and previous models was the updated Lighting USB connector. From that moment on, the lineup consisted of 3 varieties: Wi-Fi model, "American" and "global" Cellular. The difference is in the supported ranges of LTE networks.

The tablet has become the proud owner of the Apple A6X processor, which is twice as powerful as the 5th series and has four graphics cores on board. The dual-core processor operates at a clock frequency of 1.5 MHz.

Despite the increased capabilities, the iPad 4 Gen is able to work without additional recharging for more than 10 hours. The gadget also boasts a front-facing HD camera and AirDrop support.

For the first time, Apple has expanded the amount of possible user space to 128 GB.

Sales end date: November 2013.

Fifth generation - iPad Air

On October 22, 2013, Apple introduced the iPad Air. The presentation took place at the Center for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco. The event was held under the mysterious slogan "we have more to tell about." Cupertino showed a tablet that is able to conquer the airspace: "Air" - lighter than air. Already in the first month of sales, iPad Air took 3% of the share of all apple tablets on the market. It is noteworthy that in Russia the tablet officially appeared on November 13th.

With the fifth generation, significant external metamorphoses took place. The first thing that catches your eye is that the frames around the screen have become much narrower. Overall dimensions are impressive, especially against the backdrop of past generations. Since the release of the first iPad, the total length of the gadget has been reduced by 3 mm, width - by 20.5 mm, and thickness - by 5.5 mm. Since 2010, the device has lost 201 grams (for the wi-fi model) and 202 grams (for the cellular), which can be equated to a full glass of semolina. On the back cover, two stereo speakers and one internal microphone were added. And the volume buttons are divided into two halves.

The lineup again made up three positions: Wi-Fi, LTE and TD-LTE. The latter is intended for the countries of Southeast Asia.

The production capacity of the device has increased tenfold thanks to the well-coordinated work of the Apple A7 processor and the M7 co-processor. Despite the fact that the amount of RAM remained unchanged (1024 MB), but its clock frequency jumped to 800 MHz.

iPad Air is available in two colors: Silver and Space Gray. The amount of user memory is presented in 4 variations and ranges from 16 to 128 GB.

Sales end date: October 2014 (64 and 128 GB models). 16 and 32 GB can still be found on store shelves.

Sixth generation - iPad Air 2

By October 16, 2014, the Yerba Buena Center (San Francisco) was transformed again and introduced the world's thinnest tablet to the world: the iPad Air 2. "Do you even see it?" - asked Tim Cook, demonstrating the novelty to the audience. For the first time, Russia was secretly included in the list of countries of the first wave - official sales started on October 24th.

The length and width of the Air-tablets remained unchanged. But the thickness was 6.1 mm (-1.4 mm), and the weight was 437 (Wi-Fi) and 444 grams (LTE).

Combining the display with the touchscreen made it possible not only to significantly reduce the thickness of the device, but also to add an anti-reflective screen coating.

The main production load fell on the A8x processor, in which it was possible to increase the CPU parameters by 40% and improve the performance of the graphic display by 2 times. The M8 co-processor took over the motion control, barometer and sensor calibration functions.

A long-awaited update is the addition of Touch ID fingerprint recognition sensors and Apple Pay support to iPad tablets. The quality of photography has increased due to the implantation of an 8 megapixel camera. Additional features included shooting in slo-mo and time-lapse modes, as well as the ability to take a series of shots. The device was decided by a lever, which was responsible for switching modes.

It is noteworthy that for the first time there will be no 32 GB model on sale. But a model with a golden body color appeared in the line.

Sales End Date: Currently on sale.

The lines of iPod Touch multimedia players (including) have already been the topic of our articles. Today, at the request of our readers, we will talk about the development of Apple tablets and the differences between them. After reading this article, you will be able to freely answer the question: “What is the difference between iPad 4 (iPad with Retina display) and iPad 3 and other models of Apple tablets.”

At the moment, Apple is positioning only three models iPad, as relevant and officially available:, iPad 2 and, moreover, the “kopeck piece” is only available in Wi-Fi modification with 16 GB of memory. In the secondary market and on the Internet, you can find all generations of iPad in any modification.

iPad original

The first iPad(or iPad original) was a pilot and revolutionary project for Apple at the same time. It was presented at a presentation in San Francisco on January 27, 2010. As it turned out later, the idea of releasing a tablet is not new and has been disturbing the brain for quite some time. And so, his dream came true and the world saw the first Apple tablet. The pilot project was due to the fact that not all the developments were applied in the first iPad, as if Apple was afraid of the negative reaction of users and did not make an overly expensive and technological device.
Despite this, the “Apple magic” worked once again and the tablets were swept off the shelves. The first pancake turned out to be not lumpy, but critics insignificantly rotted the first iPad for a weak processor, and for the lack of a camera, and for all other iOS limitations.

iPad 2

Having done work on the bugs, on March 2, 2011, Apple announces iPad 2. The model received two cameras and became a little lighter and thinner than its predecessor, and its improved version iPad 2 (Rev A) with a more advanced processor, it is still Apple's best-selling tablet to this day.

iPad 3 (The New iPad)

On March 7, 2012, a real revolution awaited the iPad line in the form of The New iPad. The creators deliberately did not mark the tablet with the number "3", explaining this by the fact that the new model is a rethinking of the entire line. became thicker than its predecessor, however, this made it possible to hide a more capacious battery in its case. This was done for the sake of a stunning Retina display. The filling has also improved. The New iPad.

iPad 4 (iPad with Retina display)

The happy owners of the third did not rejoice for long iPad, after all, after half a year on October 23, 2012, Apple, as part of the transfer of all the latest gadgets to connectors, released. It became an exact copy of its predecessor with a new connector and slightly more advanced hardware innards.

Then it was presented. For the first time, Apple went down the screen size from 9.7″ to 7.9″ and dressed the tablet in a matte black shell. So Cupertinovtsy entered the market of budget "pills". iPad Mini mainly criticized for the lack of a retina display. Analysts suggest that the smaller first generation tablet is a tentative step into a new niche, and the next model will already boast.
Half a year later, without much fuss, Apple announced (all previous models have only 16, 32 or 64 GB modifications).

Separately, it is worth mentioning the 3G / 4G (radio) module. All versions of the iPad are available in versions with a 3G module, they are called cellular, and without it. It is quite easy to distinguish such a modification by the black plastic roof on the rear panel and a small slot for sim cards on the side.
Such modifications are more expensive and have the ability to access the Internet through the networks of mobile operators. Of course, this requires a SIM card and costs money, but here lies the second difference between the models, which is not advertised by Apple. All iPads with a 3G module have a built-in GPS module, which is not available in the Wi-Fi model. This allows cellular versions of tablets to locate without an Internet connection and use applications for navigation and geolocation. Wi-Fi versions of the iPad can only do this if they have an internet connection.

In order to determine the model by appearance iPad use a simple algorithm. With it, you can always determine which model iPad in front of you. If you have never held iPad 2 or iPad 3, then some difficulty may arise in their identification. If both tablets are nearby, the difference is obvious, but when only one sample is visible, you will have to take a closer look. In other cases, you can effortlessly distinguish one version of the tablet from another.

In conclusion, we present a comparative table with the characteristics of all Apple tablets.

How to check iPad model using iTunes?

The last way to determine the iPad model, which also has the right to exist, is carried out using regular iTunes.

Using this method is very simple:

  1. connect the tablet to your computer;
  2. launch iTunes and go to the device page;
  3. see the model of your iPad.

The same can be done with any device from Apple. And it's convenient enough that you're always reminded how outdated your device is.

conclusions

The article turned out to be not too big, but informative enough so that you can find out the model of your favorite iPad.

There are many more ways, but I thought that these three are the simplest and you will spend very little of your time on them.

Apple introduced its first iPad in 2010, and since then, this name has been the first to come to mind of any user from any country in the world when trying to find an association with the concept of a tablet computer. We think of a tablet and the iPad immediately comes to mind, even if we are an ardent fan of Samsung or Microsoft products. In this material - the history of the development of the iPad from 2010 to 2018.

First iPad (2010)

  • Screen- 9.7 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A4;
  • Memory: 16, 32, 64 GB;
  • Colors: silver back panel, black front panel;
  • Model numbers: A1219 (Wi-Fi) and A1337 (Wi-Fi + Cellular).

The idea of creating a tablet was born by Steve Jobs back in the middle of the 2000s, but the employment of Apple engineers with iPod Touch and iPhone projects made it possible to start implementing it and release the finished device only by 2010. This is how the first iPad appeared - an intermediate link between a laptop and a smartphone, with a 9.7-inch multi-touch screen and a resolution of 1028 × 768 pixels (132 ppi).

The first iPad had a single-core Apple A4 processor with a frequency of 1 GHz and 256 MB of RAM, which looks very sad by today's standards. The tablet did not have cameras at all, although the iOS 4 it supported already provided the ability to make FaceTime video calls. Among the archaic elements, one can also mention the tray for a full-sized SIM card.

iPad 2 (2011)

  • Screen- 9.7 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A5;
  • Memory: 16, 32, 64 GB;
  • Colors:
  • Model numbers: A1395 (Wi-Fi), A1396 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1397 (Wi-Fi + CDMA).

So, even for the level of technology development at the end of 2010, the first apple tablet did not impress with its characteristics, to put it mildly. But already in March 2011, Apple introduced a new version of the iPad, in the description of which you can find a lot of numbers "2". The iPad 2 processor became 2-core, the RAM was installed 2 times more (512 MB), 2 cameras with a resolution of 0.3 and 0.7 megapixels appeared at once. In addition, Cellular models now support the more popular MicroSIM cards, instead of the bulky standard ones.

In 2012, Apple also released a modified version of the iPad 2 with extended battery life, which was achieved through an improved Apple A5 processor (manufactured using the 32nm process) and a larger battery.

iPad 3 (Early 2012)

  • Screen- 9.7 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A5X;
  • Memory: 16, 32, 64 GB;
  • Colors: silver back panel, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers: A1416 (Wi-Fi), A1430 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1403 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, Verizon subscribers only)

The main innovation of the iPad 3 was the Retina display with a resolution of 2048 × 1536 pixels, which provided twice the picture quality - 264 dots per square inch compared to 132 dots in previous models. In addition, instead of a useless 0.7-megapixel main camera, iPad 3 was equipped with a competitive iSight optical module with a 5-megapixel matrix. The Apple A5X processor had the same two cores and a clock speed of 1 GHz, but the capacity of the RAM module was doubled again, to 1 GB.

iPad 4 (Late 2012)

  • Screen- 9.7 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A6X;
  • Memory: 16, 32, 64, 128 GB;
  • Colors: silver back panel, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers: A1458 (Wi-Fi), A1459 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1460 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, MM (multi-mode))

Six months later, in October 2012, another update awaited the line of apple tablets. The main thing, from the point of view of the evolution of the lineup, was the appearance in the new iPad of an 8-pin Lightning port (before that, a wide 30-pin port was used), which is used to charge and synchronize iOS devices to this day. In addition, the iPad 4 is equipped with a faster Apple A6X processor and PowerVR SGX554MP4 graphics core, as well as a 1.2 megapixel FaceTime front camera. In February 2013, the iPad 4 went on sale with 128 GB of built-in memory.

iPad mini (Late 2012)

  • Screen- 7.9 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A5;
  • Memory: 16, 32 and 64 GB;
  • Colors:
  • Model numbers: A1432 (Wi-Fi), A1454 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1455 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, (multi-mode)).

The first "minicom" became another intermediate link between a smartphone and a full-sized tablet PC. iPad mini with a screen diagonal of 7.9 inches received a resolution of 1024 × 768 pixels (which corresponds to 163 ppi), as well as the Apple A5 processor, which was pretty outdated at that time. The compactness of the device was ensured by narrowed side frames, and the volume rocker was divided into two independent buttons.

iPad Air (Late 2013)

  • Screen- 9.7 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A7;
  • Memory: 16, 32, 64 and 128 GB;
  • Colors: silver back or space gray, black or white front;
  • Model numbers: A1474 (Wi-Fi), A1475 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1476 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, TD-LTE).

Introduced in October 2013, the “airy” name of the iPad Air was explained by the compactness and lightness of the device - it became 2 mm thinner, as much as 16 mm narrower and almost 30% lighter than the previous model. Following the iPhone 5s, the new flagship of the tablet line has become the second Apple mobile gadget with a 64-bit A7 processor of its own production (in comparison with the “smartphone” counterpart, it was even overclocked by 0.1 GHz).

iPad mini 2 (Late 2013)

  • Screen- 7.9 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A5;
  • Memory: 16, 32, 64 and 128 GB;
  • Colors: silver or gray back panel, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers: A1489 (Wi-Fi), A1490 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1491 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, TD-LTE)).

iPad mini 2, aka iPad mini with Retina display, was introduced at the same time as iPad Air on October 22, 2013. It is easy to guess that the main difference from the first mini-model was the high-resolution Retina screen (2048 × 1536 pixels, 326 dpi). The compact version of the tablet was also equipped with a 62-bit Apple A7 chip and an M7 motion coprocessor, thus putting it on the same shelf as the top gadgets of its time.

iPad Air 2 (Late 2014)

  • Screen- 9.7 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A8X;
  • Memory: 16, 32, 64 GB and 128 GB;
  • Colors:
  • Model numbers: A1566 (Wi-Fi), A1567 Wi-Fi + Cellular).

In the iPad Air 2, for the first time in a mobile device, Apple used the 3-core Apple A8X processor, which had a decent clock speed of 1.8 GHz, and also increased the amount of RAM to 2 GB. In addition, it was decided to abandon the specification with 32 GB of internal memory (later it was added) and implement the Touch ID fingerprint scanner expected by many users, which has passed a year's run-in on the iPhone 5s. Another long-awaited improvement is the upgrade of the main iSight camera matrix to 8 megapixels.

iPad mini 3 (Late 2014)

  • Screen- 7.9 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A7;
  • Memory: 16, 64 and 128 GB;
  • Colors:
  • Model numbers: A1599 (Wi-Fi), A1600 (Wi-Fi + Cellular).

iPad mini 3 did not receive three processor cores; in general, its filling and design are practically the same as the previous model. Of the notable innovations, only the appearance of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and the golden color of the case can be noted.

iPad Pro 12.9" (Late 2015)

  • Screen- 12.9 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A9X;
  • Memory: 32, 128 GB and 256 GB;
  • Colors: silver, gold back or space gray, black or white front;
  • Model numbers: A1584 (Wi-Fi), A1652 (Wi-Fi + Cellular).

In September 2015, Apple introduced the first device in its line of professional tablets, which can handle many tasks previously performed exclusively on laptops and stationary PCs. The gadget received a large 12.9-inch screen with a resolution of 2732 × 2048 pixels, a 2-core Apple A9X chip with PowerVR Series 7XT graphics and an M9 co-processor, as much as 4 GB of RAM, a smart connector for connecting an equally smart keyboard, stylus support Apple Pencil and four speakers for better sound.

iPad mini 4 (Late 2015)

  • Screen- 7.9 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A8;
  • Memory: 16, 32, 64 and 128 GB;
  • Colors: silver, gold or space gray back, black or white front;
  • Model numbers: A1538 (Wi-Fi), A1550 (Wi-Fi + Cellular).

At the same time, in September 2015, the last model of the 4th generation iPad mini was shown to the public. The gadget pulled itself up to the iPad Air 2 in terms of technical characteristics, having received an Apple A8 processor, 2 GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel camera. In addition, for the first time, the parameters of the case have been changed (for example, it has become thinner), which made a difference when buying accessories for iPad mini 4 and earlier models in the line.

iPad Pro 9.7" (2016)

  • Screen- 9.7 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A9X;
  • Memory: 32, 128 and 256 GB;
  • Colors:
  • Model numbers: A1673 (Wi-Fi), A1674/A1675 (Wi-Fi + Cellular).

The professional iPad in the usual 9.7-inch form factor is somewhat inferior to its older brother in terms of technical characteristics. It was equipped with a slightly less productive specification of the Apple A9X processor (2.16 GHz versus 2.26 GHz for the 12.9-inch model) and a halved RAM module - two gigabytes versus four. But the 9.7-inch iPad Pro was the first among all apple gadgets to receive True Tone technology, which allows the display to change the color temperature depending on the level of ambient light.

iPad 5 (2017)

  • Screen- 9.7 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A9;
  • Memory: 32 and 128 GB;
  • Colors: silver, gold or space gray back, black or white front;
  • Model numbers: A1822 (Wi-Fi), A1823 (Wi-Fi + Cellular).

In March 2017, Apple diversified its tablet line again, offering a more budget-friendly option for users who don't need iPad Pro features. The 9.7-inch gadget received a rather modest display matrix with a resolution of 2048 × 1536 (like the first generation iPad Air), an Apple A9 processor (without the “X”), an 8-megapixel main camera. At the same time, the device added in size and weight when compared with the iPad Air 2.

iPad Pro 10.5" (2017)

  • Screen- 10.5 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A9X;
  • Memory: 64, 256 and 512 GB;
  • Colors: silver, gold back or space grey, rose gold, black or white front;
  • Model numbers: A1701 (Wi-Fi), A1709 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1852 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, Chinese market).

Apple engineers managed to fit the 10.5-inch iPad Pro into a case comparable in size to the iPad Pro 9.7, while equipping the device with the top 6-core Apple A9X processor, manufactured using a 10-nanometer process technology. In addition, ProMotion technology has been introduced into the tablet, which allows reaching a display refresh rate of 120 Hz.

iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation (2017)

  • Screen- 10.5 inches;
  • CPU- A10X Fusion;
  • Memory: 64, 256 and 512 GB;
  • Colors: silver, gold back or space gray, black or white front;
  • Model numbers: A1670 (Wi-Fi), A1671 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1821 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, Chinese market).

Like the 10.5-inch model, the second-generation iPad Pro 12.9-inch was introduced in June 2017 and mainly differed from its predecessor by the presence of a productive Apple A10X Fusion chip, as well as a display with ProMotion technology. In addition, a new 512 GB internal memory option has been added.

iPad 6 (2018)

  • Screen- 9.7 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A10 Fusion;
  • Memory: 32 and 128 GB;
  • Colors: silver, gold or space gray back, black or white front;
  • Model numbers: A1893 (Wi-Fi), A1954 (Wi-Fi + Cellular).

A year after the release of the fifth generation iPad, Apple made a minor update to the device, mainly related to performance. Visually, the tablet has not changed at all, but it has received a new Apple A10 Fusion processor, an M19 Motion co-processor and updated graphics.

iPad Pro 11" (2018)

  • Screen- 11 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A12X Bionic;
  • Memory: 64, 256, 512 GB and 1 TB;
  • Colors:
  • Model numbers: A1980 (Wi-Fi), A2013 and A1934 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1979 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, Chinese market).

Once again, Apple engineers have demonstrated the ability to save space - with an 11-inch Liquid Retina screen with a resolution of 2388 × 1688 pixels, the new tablet fits into the body of the previous 10.5-inch model, and even became a little thinner and lighter.

At the same time, the gadget was equipped with a top-end 8-core Apple A12X Bionic processor, Face ID facial recognition technology (TrueDepth, Portrait Mode, Animoji and Memoji) and a USB-C port for charging. Separately, it is worth noting the appearance of a version with a 1 TB drive.

iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd generation (2018)

  • Screen- 12.9 inches;
  • CPU- Apple A12X Bionic;
  • Memory: 64, 256, 512 GB and 1 TB;
  • Colors: silver or dark gray back panel, black front panel;
  • Model numbers: A1876 (Wi-Fi), A2014 and A1895 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1983 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, Chinese market).

The larger model has the same distinctive features as the 11-inch. There is also no 3.5mm headset jack, Lightning has been replaced with USB-C, the Home button along with Touch ID has given way to Face ID technology. The latter, by the way, implies the presence of another patented apple development TrueDepth, which allows you to take pictures in Portrait mode, create Animoji and Memoji.

According to yablyk

There have already been a huge number of iPad models released for quite some time, Apple has received a lot of well-deserved praise and criticism, including about the lack of a pronounced difference between all tablets. There were only a handful of Air and Mini versions before the company introduced the 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch Pro models.

Fortunately, the iPad hierarchy has become much simpler. The 12.9-inch Pro is the most expensive tablet, starting at Rs. and up, while its smaller cousin, the 9.7-inch Pro, starts at Rs. The new 9.7-inch iPad retails for Rs 25,000 and the best budget option is Rs 30,000 — a good price for the only small 7.9-inch iPad Mini 4.

Just because the new iPad lineup is smaller doesn't mean picking the right model is less of a challenge. What good is a 12-inch screen if you value portability above all else? Why pay more for a top-end graphics chip if you only occasionally play heavy games?

In an attempt to answer these questions and more, we've evaluated each iPad pragmatically, in an attempt to determine the best fit for any given use. This buying guide, in the truest sense of the word, will show all the advantages and disadvantages of each iPad, in understandable words. To say that this will lead to your absolute purchase is a joke - we have no such goal, but this guide should at least help you choose which Apple iPads to consider and what to avoid.

Budget iPad - iPad 9.7 (from 25,000 rubles)

The latest 9.7-inch iPad arrived in March and is one of the most affordable Apple products the company has ever offered. It's the cheapest option in the current iPad line after the iPad Mini 2 was discontinued.

It's a great tablet for watching movies, thanks to its 9.7-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. The device has a fast A9 processor and a large battery that can keep the tablet running for up to 10 hours on a single charge. You'll also find an 8MP rear camera, a 1.2MP front camera, dual speakers, a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, Apple Pay support, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

With the announcement of the new iPad, Apple also announced that the iPad Air 2 will be discontinued. In fact, the difference between the two tablets is small. The new iPad is 7.5mm thicker than the svelte, 6.1mm Air 2. The new model has a faster processor than its sibling, and is slightly heavier, but with a bigger battery. The iPad 9.7 lacks the processing power for the 12-megapixel camera found on the 9.7-inch Pro versions.

What does this mean in practical terms? If you don't need superior power, play the latest games, or run extremely demanding apps, the new Apple iPad will do just fine. It fits comfortably in the hand and is ideal for everyday content consumption - reading, watching movies, casual games, etc. But for serious work, you should look at the Pro line.

It's hard to find a better iPad for the money. If budget is a major factor, this tablet is the obvious choice.

Powerful and compact iPad - iPad Mini 4 (from 30,000 rubles)

If you're looking for power in a small form factor, the iPad Mini 4 has it for you. Evolving from the iPad Mini 3, it takes into account all the shortcomings of its predecessor and even more: it has the same A8 processor as in the iPhone 6, 8-megapixel rear camera, fast Wi-Fi (802.11ac), ID scanner, thinner (6.1 mm) and lightweight (299 g) aluminum body.

The tablet takes the design from the iPad Mini 3, has the same battery life (10 hours), and the same screen resolution (2,048 x 1536 pixels).

The iPad Mini 4 supports all the multitasking features of iOS 9's and is by far the most compelling device, allowing you to organize and interact with two apps at the same time. You can copy and paste text from the nearby Wikipedia window into a Word document, or watch a video while replying to an email. (Multiple windows on a small screen can be difficult to maneuver, which goes without saying).

The iPad Mini 4 has an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with an improved aperture compared to the iPad Mini 3, the A8 chip - which also powers the Apple TV - is capable of handling almost any graphics-intensive game.

All in all, the iPad Mini 4 can multitask like a pro, take great pictures, and play the latest games. If these prospects are exciting, go for it - buy it. But if they don't and you want the same features in a bigger package, consider buying an iPad off the top shelf.

Elephant in the room - iPad Pro 12.9 (from 59,000 rubles)

The iPad Pro is Apple's largest tablet at 12.9 inches. It is thick and hefty, about 6.9mm thick and weighs about 700g.

The device justifies the performance and functionality, our impressions support these claims. The iPad Pro 12.9's display is a whopping 2,732 x 2,048 pixels, more than any iPad, and is powered by an A9X processor, a beefed-up version of the A9, paired with 4GB of RAM.

The tablet is well-endowed on the outside, with massive four speakers, an ID touch sensor, an 8-megapixel camera, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi with LTE connectivity. It's a multi-tasking monster.

Powerful hardware are just some of the best in Pro. The real value is in the supposedly offered accessories. There's the Smart Keyboard with attached QWERTY keys, and the much more interesting Apple iPad stylus.

This is Apple's first foray with a stylus, and the company touted its superiority over competing models in the area of pressure sensitivity (it can distinguish between hard and light presses) - the battery lasts up to 12 hours.

The Pro version may come with improved performance as well as additional services such as dual stereo speakers and a Touch ID scanner. But the device is not for everyone, Pro is the most expensive iPad with a base price of 59,000 rubles. Its huge screen is as inevitably awkward as it is unwieldy - it will be difficult to use it on the subway or plane. The tools and performance really make it the best, but Apple's smart keyboard and stylus will have to fork out extra.

The big Apple Pro is built for a very specific market: businesses and enterprise users who might otherwise be influenced by equivalent PCs like Microsoft's Surface. That's not to say its features don't appeal to the average consumer, but if you're not prepared to put up with the extra-large 12.9-inch size, it's worth considering a more portable option.

Best of all - iPad Pro 9.7 (from 45,000 rubles)

Perhaps Apple has realized that giant tablets really aren't for the vast majority of people. The smaller version of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, will sweetly amaze you. It is largely identical, although smaller than its predecessor. The 9.7-inch model gets the same A9X processor as its big brother, along with the same array of multiple speakers and a 2048 x 1536 Retina display.

The tablet is compatible with many, if not all, 12.9-inch accessories, including the Apple Pen and Smart Keyboard.

The small iPad Pro uses only half the 2GB RAM of its counterpart, but features better cameras in the form of a 12-megapixel rear shooter and a 5-megapixel sensor on the front. In general, the differences are minor. From an empirical standpoint, you get the same technology from last year's iPad Pro in a lighter package.

For most people, there is no danger. The 9.7-inch iPad Pro has not only better portability, but also better processing capabilities, plus the added benefit of being compatible with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro accessories. I am glad that the tablet has slightly risen in price, in comparison with the iPad 2 Air.

There is no, as we said at the beginning, a perfect iPad. The new iPad 9.7 lacks a top processor; The iPad Mini 4 is the only compact choice; and the 12-inch iPad Pro is a little big. But, all iPad tablets are better suited for most users than others.

Want a cheap, relatively uncompromising iPad? The standard 9.7-inch iPad is a great option. Do you want a top line that can fit in your portfolio? Choose the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

Ultimately, when it comes time to make a purchasing decision, we always reserve some practical time for ourselves. Whether you buy an iPad at your local M. Video or Apple Store, you'll always get a device that's strong all around. Apple tablets aren't the cheapest investment, so weigh your options carefully.
