Rising from sleep, we fall down to Thee, Blessed, and cry out to the angelic song of Thee, Stronger: Holy, Holy, Holy Thou, God, have mercy on us the Mother of God. And now enlighten my mental eyes, open my mouth to learn Thy words, and understand Thy commandments, and do Thy will, and sing Thee in confession of the heart, and sing of Thy all-holy name, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever centuries. Psalm 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Wash me most of all from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin; for I know my iniquity, and my sin before me is taken out. I have sinned against you alone and done evil before you, as if you were justified in your words, and conquered when you judge Thee. Behold, in iniquities I was conceived, and in sins my mother gave birth to me. Behold, thou hast loved the truth; the unknown and secret wisdom of Thy revealed to me. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Give joy and joy to my hearing; the bones of the humble will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins and cleanse all my iniquities. Create a pure heart in me, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Reward me the joy of Your salvation and confirm me with the dominating Spirit. I will teach the wicked in Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from blood, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue rejoices in thy righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will proclaim your praise. As if you would have desired sacrifices, you would have given them: you do not favor burnt offerings. Sacrifice to God the spirit is broken; a contrite and humble heart God will not despise. Please, O Lord, with Thy favor Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, an offering and a burnt offering; then they will offer bullocks on your altar.

Symbol of faith

I believe in one God the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only Begotten, who was born of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, Whom all was. For us for the sake of man and for our sake of salvation, he descended from heaven and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and Mary the Virgin and became human. Crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried. And resurrected on the third day according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And the packs of the future with glory to judge the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Life-Giving One, who proceeds from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets. Into one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. Amen.

Prayer Rule of St. Seraphim of Sarov

Prayer Eight, to our Lord Jesus Christ

Many-merciful and all-merciful, my God, Lord Jesus Christ, many for the sake of love descended and became incarnate, as if you would save everyone. And again, Savior, save me by grace, I pray Thee; if you save me from deeds, there is no grace, and a gift, but more duty. Hey, many in generosity and inexpressible in mercy! Believe in me, said thou, about my Christ, he will live and will not see death forever. If faith, even in Thee, saves the desperate, I believe, save me, for my God is You and the Creator. Faith instead of deeds may be imputed to me, my God, do not find deeds that justify me. But let that faith of mine prevail in place of all, let that one answer, that one justify me, that one show me a partaker of Your eternal glory. May Satan not steal me away, and boast, O Word, tear me away from Your hand and fence; but either I want to, save me, or I don’t want to, Christ my Savior, anticipate soon, soon perished: Thou art my God from my mother’s womb. Vouchsafe me, Lord, now love Thee, as if I sometimes loved that same sin; and packs to work for you without laziness, as if you had worked before flattering satan. Most of all, I will work for You, the Lord and my God Jesus Christ, all the days of my life, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Lord have mercy. (Three times)

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Prayer of Saint John of Damascus

Lover of mankind, will this coffin be for me, or will you enlighten my wretched soul in the daytime? Seven coffin is before me, seven death is coming. I am afraid of Your judgment, Lord, and endless torment, but I do not stop doing evil: I will always anger the Lord my God, and Your Most Pure Mother, and all the heavenly powers, and my holy guardian angel. We know, O Lord, that I am not worthy of Thy love for mankind, but I am worthy of all condemnation and torment. But, Lord, either I want it or I don't want it, save me. If you save the righteous, you are nothing great; and if you have mercy on the pure, it is nothing marvelous: for the essence of Thy mercy is worthy. But on me, a sinner, surprise Thy mercy: in this, show Thy philanthropy, so that my malice will not overcome Thy inexpressible goodness and mercy: and if you wish, arrange a thing for me.

Enlighten my eyes, O Christ God, lest I fall asleep into death, lest my enemy say: Be strong against him.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Be the intercessor of my soul, O God, as I walk in the midst of many nets; Deliver me from them and save me, Blessed One, like a Lover of mankind.

And now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

The Most Glorious Mother of God, and the Most Holy Angel of the Holy Angels, silently sing with heart and mouth, confessing this Mother of God, as if she truly gave birth to God incarnate to us, and praying unceasingly for our souls.

Mark yourself with the sign of the cross.

Prayer to the Holy Cross

Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee from His face. As the smoke disappears, let them disappear; as wax melts from the face of fire, so let the demons perish from the face of those who love God and are marked by the sign of the cross, and in joy they say: Rejoice, Most Honorable and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, drive away the demons by the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, crucified on you, who descended into hell and corrected his strength the devil, and who gave us His Honorable Cross to drive away every adversary. O Most Honorable and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord! Help me with the Holy Lady Virgin Mother of God and with all the saints forever. Amen.

Or briefly:

Protect me, Lord, by the power of Your Honorable and Life-Giving Cross, and save me from all evil.

Prayer

Weaken, leave, forgive, God, our sins, free and involuntary, even in word and in deed, even in knowledge and not in knowledge, even in days and nights, even in mind and in thought: forgive us all, as Good and Humanitarian.

Prayer

Forgive those who hate and offend us, Lord, Lover of mankind. Bless those who do good. Grant to our brethren and relatives even for the salvation of petitions and eternal life. In the infirmities of the being, visit and grant healing. Izhe govern the sea. Travel travel. Fight Orthodox Christians. Grant forgiveness to those who serve and pardon us of sins. Those who have commanded us unworthy to pray for them, have mercy according to Your great mercy. Remember, Lord, before our departed father and brothers, and give them rest, where the light of Thy face dwells. Remember, Lord, our captive brothers and deliver me from every situation. Remember, Lord, those who bear fruit and do good in Your holy churches, and grant them even salvation, petitions and eternal life. Remember, Lord, also us, the humble and sinful and unworthy servants of Thy, and enlighten our minds with the light of Thy mind, and guide us on the path of Thy commandments, with the prayers of our Most Pure Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary and all Thy saints: blessed be Thou forever and ever . Amen.

Confession of sins daily

I confess to you the Lord my God and Creator, in the Holy Trinity, the One, glorified and worshiped, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, all my sins, even when I have done all the days of my life, and for every hour, and now, and in the past days and night, deed, word, thought, overeating, drunkenness, secret eating, idle talk, despondency, laziness, slander, disobedience, slander, condemnation, neglect, self-love, acquisitiveness, theft, ill-spokenness, foul profit, mischief, jealousy, envy, anger, remembrance , hatred, covetousness and all my feelings: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and my other sins, both spiritual and bodily, in the image of you my God and the Creator of anger, and my neighbor unrighteousness: regretting these, I blame myself to you my God I imagine, and I have the will to repent: to the point, Lord my God, help me, with tears I humbly pray to Thee: forgive me, who has passed my sins by Thy mercy, and resolve from all these, even those who have spoken before You, as Good and Humane.

When you go to sleep, say:

In Your hands, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, I commit my spirit: You bless me, You have mercy on me and grant me eternal life. Amen.

Notes:

- Printed in italics (explanations and names of prayers) are not read during prayer.

- When it is written “Glory”, “And now”, it is necessary to read in full: “Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “And now and forever and forever and ever. Amen"

- There is no sound ё in the Church Slavonic language, and therefore it is necessary to read “we call”, and not “we call”, “your”, and not “your”, “mine”, and not “mine”, etc.

“When you pray, do not speak too much, like pagans: they think for, as if in their many words they will hear: do not be like them: for the news is your Father, whom you require before your petition” Mt. 6:7-8

MORNING PRAYERS EVENING PRAYERS
READ LISTEN READ LISTEN

The prayer rule is the daily morning and evening prayers performed by Christians.

The rule can be general - obligatory for all or individual, selected for the believer by the confessor, taking into account his spiritual state, strength and employment.

The rule consists of morning and evening prayers, which are performed daily. This vital rhythm is necessary, because otherwise the soul easily falls out of the life of prayer, as if waking up only from time to time. In prayer, as in any big and difficult task, "inspiration", "mood" and improvisation alone are not enough.

Reading prayers connects a person with their creators: psalmists and ascetics. This helps to find a spiritual mood akin to their burning heart. In praying in other people's words, our example is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. His prayer cries during the sufferings on the Cross are lines from psalms (Ps. 21:2; 30:6).

There are three basic prayer rules:

1) a complete prayer rule, which is printed in the "Orthodox Prayer Book";

2) a short prayer rule; in the morning: “King of Heaven”, Trisagion, “Our Father”, “Virgin Mother of God”, “Rising from sleep”, “God have mercy on me”, “Symbol of Faith”, “God, cleanse”, “To You, Master”, “ Holy Angele”, “Most Holy Lady”, invocation of the saints, prayer for the living and the dead; in the evening: “King of Heaven”, Trisagion, “Our Father”, “Have mercy on us, Lord”, “Eternal God”, “Good King”, “Angel of Christ”, from “Choose Governor” to “It is worthy to eat”;

3) a short prayer rule of St. Seraphim of Sarov: three times "Our Father", three times "Virgin Mother of God" and once "Symbol of Faith" - for those exceptional days and circumstances when a person is extremely tired or very limited in time.

It is undesirable to completely omit the prayer rule. Even if the prayer rule is read without due attention, the words of the prayers, penetrating into the soul, have their cleansing effect.

The main prayers should be known by heart (with regular reading, they are gradually remembered by a person even with a very poor memory), so that they penetrate deeper into the heart and so that they can be repeated in any circumstances. It is advisable to study the text of the translation of prayers from Church Slavonic into Russian in order to understand the meaning of each word and not pronounce a single word meaninglessly or without accurate understanding. It is very important that the person approaching prayer banish resentment, irritation, and bitterness from the heart. Without efforts aimed at serving people, at fighting sin, at establishing control over the body and the spiritual sphere, prayer cannot become the inner core of life.

In the conditions of modern life, given the workload and accelerated pace, it is not easy for the laity to set aside a certain time for prayer. The enemy of morning prayer is haste, and evening prayer is fatigue.
Morning prayers are best read before the start of any business (and before breakfast). In extreme cases, they are pronounced on the way from home. Late in the evening it is often difficult to concentrate due to fatigue, so it can be recommended to read the evening prayer rule in free minutes before dinner or even earlier.

During prayer, it is recommended to retire, light a lamp or a candle and stand in front of the icon. Depending on the nature of intra-family relationships, one can recommend reading the prayer rule together, with the whole family, or for each family member separately. Common prayer is recommended before eating food, on solemn days, before a festive meal, and on other similar occasions. Family prayer is a kind of church, public prayer (the family is a kind of “home church”) and therefore does not replace individual prayer, but only complements it.

Before the beginning of prayer, one should make the sign of the cross and make several bows, half-length or earthly, and try to tune in to an inner conversation with God. The difficulty of prayer is often a sign of its true effectiveness.

Prayer for other people is an integral part of prayer. Standing before God does not alienate a person from his neighbors, but binds him to them with even closer ties. We should not be limited only to prayer for those close and dear to us. Praying for those who have caused us grief brings peace to the soul, affects these people and makes our prayer sacrificial.

It is good to end the prayer with thanksgiving to God for the gift of fellowship and contrition for one's inattention. Getting down to business, you must first think about what you have to say, do, see during the day and ask God for blessings and strength to follow His will. In the midst of a busy day, you need to say a short prayer (Jesus Prayer), which will help you find the Lord in everyday affairs.

Once upon a time, I asked “all-knowing grannies” in the Church about everything that was not clear to me. Once again, I asked about reading the Psalter: how to read, what to pray for, etc. To which my grandmother replied that the Psalter must be read only in the Church Slavonic language, otherwise “LOW”! I was very upset and began to study the letter of the church language. But I was tempted to ask the priest about this in confession. Batiushka smiled through his beard and said that the Psalter can and should be read in the language you understand. The Lord understands all languages, you just need to sincerely ask Him, from the bottom of your heart! And he also advised me to ask all questions only to the priest and never listen to the know-it-all grandmothers!

    Question to the priest

Question to the priest- section of the site "Russian faith", which is especially popular. We are getting new questions to the Orthodox priest almost every day, and especially a lot of them come from novice Christians who have only heard about the Old Believers, but did not have the opportunity to get to know him better.

We know how difficult it can be, - cross the threshold of the temple and ask your question to the priest live. And of course, a personal conversation and a lively word of comfort will never replace electronic correspondence. However, we need spiritual advice.

We believe that all the efforts of our shepherds will not be in vain even if at least one of those who asked receives some spiritual benefit!

    Ask a priest a question

Is it possible to read prayers in Russian?

You raise a very serious question, the answer to which is not as simple as it might seem at first glance. For a person deeply rooted in the Orthodox tradition, it seems unthinkable how one can address God in modern Russian. And for a person who is just coming to faith, the Church Slavonic language is unusual and incomprehensible. In the temple, the texts of the Holy Scriptures are read in Church Slavonic, and in literature, in sermons, in letters and answers to contemporaries, we most often use the text of the synodal translation of the Bible into Russian. But we use it only in order to more clearly convey the idea to modern man, although this translation is also rather archaic. In passing, I note that work is underway to publish an Old Believer translation into Russian of the Holy Gospel.

It must be said that the Church Slavonic translation of the Bible and liturgical texts is more accurate and closer to the original than the synodal translation. Specialists in the field of linguistics speak of the difficulty of interpreting prayer formulas and the impossibility of accurately conveying liturgical semantics with the tools of modern language.

A wonderful article about our liturgical language is published in the preface to the "Prayer Book", published by the Old Believer Metropolis of the Russian Orthodox Old Believer Church (M., 1988, etc., pp. 8-9). It briefly but essentially reveals the meaning of the Church Slavonic language and the reasons why the Church cannot switch to modern Russian. Here I will only quote one paragraph.

The centuries-old prayer experience of the Russian Church shows that the Church Slavonic language is the best suited for prayerful communion with God. After all, a conversation with God is not a conversation with a person. Therefore, the language of prayer must be different from the language of ordinary speech. The Church Slavonic language gives prayers and glorifications an elevated style, distracting the soul from vain earthly worries and sorrows. In this regard, the language of our worship is an inexhaustible treasure.

Start praying according to the prayer book, and you will see how the words of prayer flow organically from the heart.

The liturgical and modern Russian languages are closely related. Therefore, I would advise you to make an effort on yourself and try to master Church Slavonic. We can recommend the following tutorial: Pletneva A.A., Kravetsky A.G. Church Slavonic: Proc. ed. – 5th ed., stereotypical. - M.: AST-PRESS BOOK, 2013 - 272 s. It is also necessary to use a dictionary, although not many church words require translation. Further, when reading Holy Scripture, be sure to refer to patristic interpretations. Compare Church Slavonic and Synodal translations. This will allow you to understand that the translation does not give a complete understanding of the meaning. After all, the Lord apostles open the mind to the understanding of the Scriptures"(Luke 24:45). Obviously, such work requires some effort and time, but it is generously rewarded. You will gain a deeper understanding of the Bible and worship. " For I want mercy, and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings"says the Lord (6:6).

I can give you an example. On Monday of the Holy Spirit, the following words of the Apostle Paul are read in the temple: … redeeming time» (Eph. 5:16). And in the synodal translation in the same place we read: … cherishing time". Agree that this instruction in Church Slavonic sounds much deeper and stronger? And here is his interpretation.

“Amma Theodora asked Archbishop Theophilus: what is the meaning of the saying of the Apostle: “Redeeming time”? He answered: “This means that our whole earthly life is like the production of trade. For example: when the time comes when reproaches will fall on you, you will redeem this time with humility of mind and gain benefit (profit) for yourself. Thus, everything that is contrary and hostile to us can turn, if we want, in favor of us ”(Alphabetical Paterik).

I also recommend that you familiarize yourself with the translations of the psalms made by the outstanding Russian philologist, academician Sergei Sergeevich Averintsev (1937-2004). See for example: Selected Psalms / Translation and commentary by S.S. Averintseva. - M .: St. Philaret Orthodox Christian Institute, 2005. - 176 p. These translations are remarkable in that they allow the modern person to convey the meaning of the psalms, firstly, in the Russian language (which excludes modern words, barbarisms and borrowings), and secondly, in such a Russian language that also conveys the imagery of the original, allows feel the structure of the psalm.

In conclusion, it is necessary to say a few words about the modern Russian language. This phrase is often used to denote common language, excluding everything that sounds "archaic". " The use of such a language writes S.S. Averintsev, - “creates the illusion that the environment in which the action takes place is modernity. … God comes to the believer in the reality of today; but I am afraid that He will not come to an isolationist ideological space that does not want to know anything but himself(op. cit. pp. 148 and 150).
