  3. Berries condition. Rose hips are often crushed or cut before brewing - this is a mistake, the decoction must be prepared from whole berries. Therefore, we will “set aside” steams and tinctures aside and deal only with how to properly brew rose hips in a metropolis. How to brew fresh rosehip?

In our area, it is rare to brew fresh rose hips - only at the time of its ripening (only a few weeks). However, it is in these short weeks that rosehip is able to give a person a maximum of useful substances contained in it. However, it should be understood that fresh fruits are very delicate and require the same “gentle” approach to extracting vitamins, minerals and other useful components of this plant.

At the same time, unfortunately, there is still no consensus on how exactly fresh rose hips should be brewed. And everyone brews it in their own way.

For our part, we offer the following algorithm for making a healing drink from the fruits and seeds of fresh rose hips:

  • Rinse the rose hips, open and clean them of “rough” hairs, which, when they get on the skin and mucous membranes of the throat, cause itching and perspiration (and even cough), respectively.
  • Mash the fruits and seeds peeled from hairs with a fork.
  • Place the resulting mass in any glass container - ideally a thermos with a glass flask - and pour 60-degree water (better cold than hot). The ratio of rose hips and water for prophylactic use is 1 teaspoon of the mashed mass of fruits and rose hip seeds per 1 glass of water.
  • Keep the infusion for about 40 minutes and strain through cheesecloth or a fine sieve.
  • After that, the used fruits should be put in a saucepan / stewpan or mug, pour water (1 teaspoon per 0.5 liter of water) and boil for half an hour.
  • Strain the broth, cool and mix with the infusion.
  • Add honey if desired and drink.

This option of brewing fresh rose hips will first allow you to carefully extract vitamins and minerals sensitive to high temperatures, and then “pull out” useful elements from the plant that are not afraid of prolonged cooking.

Important! The temperature of 60°C was chosen for a reason. Further heating destroys vitamins, and also leads to a change in the structure of some minerals (for example, calcium), after which these elements will be useless for humans.

How to brew dried rose hips?

In terms of brewing, dried rose hips are not much different from fresh ones in terms of the procedure itself. There are some minor tweaks though. Let's recap the entire recipe:

  • Rinse.
  • Grind in a coffee grinder or blender (without cleaning from hairs).
  • Next, pour the resulting "flour" into a thermos with a glass flask, pour 60-degree water and leave for 45-50 minutes (longer infusion is due to the need to soak dry rosehip particles).
  • Filter the infusion.
  • For 30 minutes, boil the "sediment" (1 tsp of feedstock per 0.5 liter of water).
  • Filter again, cool, mix the decoction with the infusion and add honey (or any other "sweetener").

In addition, whole rose hips can also be brewed. Just immediately tune in that this brewing process will take much longer, or rather, from 7 to 12 hours. Well, you can’t do without a thermos with a glass flask either. Metal thermoses somewhat reduce the useful properties of wild rose, which is why we recommend using only thermoses with a glass flask for brewing wild rose.

The simplest option for brewing whole dry rosehips looks like this: put rosehips in a thermos, pour 60-degree water and soak for 7 to 12 hours (depending on the limits of your patience). It is ideal to leave the infusion overnight, and in the morning drink a healthy drink with honey or apple jam ...

After the night, the infusion can be drained, and several new fruits can be added to the used fruits and brewed again with 60-degree water. Old fruits can be thrown away after 3-4 days. This approach will allow you to extract vitamins and hard-to-reach minerals from rose hips.
