The name of the greenery in the garden. Plum details. Cultivation, useful properties and variety selection. Spicy herbs: photo

We have a special garden bed in our garden, on which, given the compatibility of the greenery in the garden and other early ripening vegetable crops, we harvest 6 crops per season. The secret is in fertile soil, a 3-time sowing schedule, and planting compatible crops. And now in order.

How to make beds for greens and early vegetables

Our garden bed is located in a well-lit place, its size is 3 square meters. m. Considering that from it we harvest greens and early ripening vegetables of 30 - 35 kg per season, this amount is more than enough for us.

For ease of use, we made a high bed: we assembled a box of boards, 80 cm by 3 m in size and 30 cm high, in which fertile soil is located.

We have been preparing the ground for the new season since autumn, after harvesting the last crop. For 1 sq. m of soil, add a bucket of compost or manure, as well as a handful of complete mineral fertilizer with trace elements. We dig everything up and leave it until spring.

How to plant greens in the garden

As already mentioned, we plant plants in 3 terms. At the same time, we must take into account both the compatibility of vegetables, and after which crops which can be planted. Since with mono plantings of plants, as well as with their planting several times in the same place, pathogens accumulate. And in the soil, the amount of elements consumed by one crop in large quantities is rapidly decreasing.

So, as soon as the sun warms up and the snow melts, we sprinkle the bed with wood ash, loosen it and make grooves for vegetables and herbs, in which we plant the following crops:

  • April is the first sowing date. We plant onions on greens on one half of the beds, and radishes on the second.
  • The second sowing date is at the beginning of June, we plant dill and spinach. We remove the onion and sow dill in its place, and sow spinach on the half of the bed that has been vacated after the radish.
  • The third sowing date is at the beginning of August. We remove the spinach and dill, and sow the vacated area with radishes (in place of dill) and lettuce.

After a few years of experimenting with the distribution of greenery and planting dates, we came to just such a scheme. Why? It is quite simple and convenient, with such joint cultivation, neighboring crops need the same care. It is also important that it is precisely when sowing radishes, dill, lettuce and spinach and onions on greens that they need the least care, the plants quickly increase their green mass and do not go into the arrow.

How to care for greenery in the garden

Caring for such a bed for greens and early ripening vegetables is normal:

  • regular watering and loosening,
  • weed weeding,
  • double feeding. Twice a season we feed with 30 g of urea and 20 g of superphosphate per bucket of water.

At the end of September we harvest the last crop of radish and lettuce. By the way, read the article about how long to keep the last radish crop.

Greenery in the garden and at their summer cottage

Anyone who becomes an avid gardener is usually surprised to learn that peptic ulcer, due to which doctors forbid the use of spicy and salty foods, is not a reason to ban herbs such as peppermint, fennel, thyme, sage. But more beginners are surprised that on the site you can grow not only ordinary greens (parsley, dill, garlic, sorrel, spinach), but also “unusual” (lovage, cumin, tarragon and more). And that many plants growing in flower beds can be used as spices and add piquancy to boring dishes (calamus, large nasturtium, saffron, marigolds).

Herbs and spices are grown not only to experience unusual taste sensations, but also because of the great benefits, which are as follows:

  • the ability to remove toxins and carcinogens;
  • opportunities to reduce sugar levels;
  • elimination of bad cholesterol;
  • normalization of metabolism;
  • stimulation of immune abilities;
  • weight loss;
  • restoration of liver activity;
  • increased hair and nail growth by improving cell regeneration capabilities;
  • hormonal improvement.

Therefore, it is worth studying the types of garden greens and growing them!

Typology of herbs and spices

To unite into a whole what we understand when we say "greens", such a definition as "leafy vegetables" will help. There are no more precise distinctions and classifications, because some plants differ in that both leaves and roots (parsley, horseradish, bulbs) are used as food. In addition, there is a group that we have already mentioned - these are spicy plants used as seasonings. And then pollen from stamens can be used, like saffron, and flowers with leaves, like thyme, and seeds, like pepper - peas.

An idea of what groups the greens grown in the garden are divided into can be given by the following classification.

Classification table

The variety of genera and families of these plants is very wide:

  • watercress belongs to the genus "Bedbug";
  • celery itself forms the name of the genus;
  • garden spinach is part of the genus "Spinach", the family "amaranth", and so on.

It is much better for the average summer resident to classify the greens in the garden according to the time of germination and ripening. Leafy vegetables that grow earlier than others and are called "spring" include sorrel, rhubarb, perennial onions, parsley.

The optimal set of what should be planted for later use in healthy food in the summer includes:

  • tarragon;
  • asparagus;
  • lettuce;
  • spinach;
  • dill.

Thinking about what kind of greens to grow in the garden, you should clearly calculate:

  • what area can you afford to allocate for such landings;
  • how to "stretch" the presence of a variety of useful herbs for the whole summer;
  • what kind of plants you can actually take care of without harming all the other inhabitants of your plot.

Consider individual representatives of your future "useful beds"!

Parsley

A cold-resistant friend of the gardener, the cultivation of which will help increase the level of hemoglobin, improve the quality of vision, and eliminate winter immunodeficiency.

Landing can begin shortly after the snow melts. The plant is able to bear fruit for 2 years, but for this, suitable soil should be prepared. Each square meter of soil must be supplied with 1/3 bucket of clean sand, 1/2 bucket of high-quality humus and add 1 tbsp. a spoonful of superphosphate. Someone soaks the seeds in warm water two days before planting, someone plants them without soaking, someone does it in the fall. In any case, the grooves for the seeds should be 10-15 cm apart, and a centimeter layer of soil is laid out on top of the poured seeds.

The plant is convenient because, with the maximum benefit, it requires a minimum of care: weed removal and watering. Top dressing can be carried out no more than 1-2 times per summer, using superphosphate and nitrate for this. Harvesting parsley for the winter is also surprisingly simple: drying it out of the sun, in a ventilated room, or pickling chopped parsley in a jar. Being frozen, it is also useful.

Sorrel, spinach, rhubarb

Early-ripening sorrel and slightly more heat-loving spinach are similar in that both are perennial and grow from a basal rosette formed by leaves. It is known that spinach strengthens the immune system and gives healthy energy to the body, but sorrel is no less useful. In its composition, everything is only the most useful: carotene, vitamins of groups B, C, A, potassium, calcium, magnesium and much more.

Both plants are added to first courses and salads, sorrel is used to make stuffing for ravioli, pies are baked with it (as with rhubarb), and jam is made. Gardening experts advise considering planting, alternating early-ripening and late-growing varieties so that there are no interruptions in the use of vitamins.

Arugula

If you have a desire to plant more exotic greens in the garden, pay attention to arugula. Despite the fact that the birthplace of the plant is sun-loving Italy, arugula is considered cold-resistant.

It must be planted so that the growth period falls on the time of the first summer freshness at temperatures not higher than 18 °, otherwise, instead of tender shoots, you risk getting hard “arrows”. Another requirement of the "overseas guest" is not acidic soil, ideally it should be placed in areas after legumes, tomatoes and potatoes. By planting it in fertile soil, you will get young sprouts, which contain a lot of iodine, healthy fatty acids, macro- and microelements, vitamins, beta-carotene.

The subtleties and tricks of planting greenery

When growing greens, a planting scheme, especially mixed, will help solve such problems:

  1. Reduction (reduction) of large doses of mineral dressings and sprays.
  2. Increase in yield.
  3. Use for re-landing on areas freed from early crops.
  4. Improving the taste, composition and nutritional value of crops.
  5. Competent organization of soil prevention from depletion.

Greens in your first aid kit

Traditional medicine makes extensive use of the capabilities of "auxiliary" plants. Doctors recommend iodine-saturated lettuce to patients with thyroid pathology, spinach is excellent for rickets, aging and retinal diseases, leaf beet-meingold improves the condition of the walls of blood vessels, the duodenum, eating celery improves blood composition and so on. Those who know the consequences of long-term use of medications are well aware that greens in medicine do not bring as much harm to the body as artificially synthesized substances can do.

Grown in your own garden, the greens whose beneficial properties are undeniable in comparison with those collected near highways or factories with harmful emissions, will become a real lifesaver for many. If a slightly pampered salad does not grow on your site, plant cilantro, it also contains quite a lot of iodine, and in addition, vitamins of all groups, pectin, aromatic oils, poutine and other trace elements. From the extensive list of plants with edible stems, you can make a set for a universal green first aid kit!

Astrakhan tomatoes ripen remarkably lying on the ground, but you should not repeat this experience in the Moscow region. Our tomatoes need support, support, a garter. My neighbors use all sorts of pegs, garters, loops, ready-made plant supports, and mesh fences. Each method of fixing the plant in an upright position has its own advantages and "side effects". I'll tell you how I place tomato bushes on trellises, and what comes of it.

Every summer resident knows that plants need nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for full development. These are the three main macronutrients, the deficiency of which significantly affects the appearance and yield of plants, and in advanced cases can lead to their death. But at the same time, not everyone understands the importance of other macro- and microelements for plant health. And they are important not only in themselves, but also for the effective absorption of the same nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Garden strawberries, or strawberries, as we used to call them, are one of the early fragrant berries that summer generously endows us with. How we rejoice in this harvest! In order for the "berry boom" to repeat every year, we need to take care of the care of the berry bushes in the summer (after the end of fruiting). The laying of flower buds, from which ovaries will form in spring, and berries in summer, begins approximately 30 days after the end of fruiting.

Spicy pickled watermelon is a savory snack for fatty meat. Watermelons and watermelon rinds have been pickled since time immemorial, but the process is laborious and time consuming. According to my recipe, it’s easy to cook pickled watermelon in 10 minutes, and a spicy snack will be ready by the evening. The watermelon marinated with spices and chili is stored in the refrigerator for several days. Be sure to keep the jar in the refrigerator, not only for the sake of safety - chilled, this snack is just licking your fingers!

Among the variety of species and hybrids of philodendrons, there are many plants, both gigantic and compact. But not a single species competes in unpretentiousness with the main modest - blushing philodendron. True, his modesty does not concern the appearance of the plant. Reddening stems and cuttings, huge leaves, long shoots, forming, although very large, but also strikingly elegant silhouette, look very elegant. Philodendron blushing requires only one thing - at least minimal care.

Similar thick soups are prepared in India, Morocco, and the countries of Southeast Asia. The tone is set by spices and seasonings - garlic, chili, ginger and a bouquet of spicy spices, which can be assembled to your liking. It is better to fry vegetables and spices in melted butter (ghee) or mix olive oil and butter in a saucepan, this, of course, is not the same, but it tastes similar.

Many ornamental and fruit crops, except for drought-resistant ones, suffer from the scorching sun, and conifers in the winter-spring period - from the sun's rays, enhanced by the reflection from the snow. In this article we will talk about a unique preparation for protecting plants from sunburn and drought - Sunshet Agrosuccess. The problem is relevant for most regions of Russia. In February and early March, the sun's rays become more active, and the plants are not yet ready for new conditions.

“Each vegetable has its own time”, and each plant has its own optimal time for planting. Anyone who has experienced planting is well aware that the hot season for planting is spring and autumn. This is due to several factors: in spring, the plants have not yet started to grow rapidly, there is no sweltering heat, and precipitation often falls. However, no matter how hard we try, circumstances often develop in such a way that landings have to be carried out at the very height of summer.

It contains helper bacteria that settle in the zone of the root system and begin to work for the benefit of the plant, allowing it to actively grow, stay healthy and give high yields. Usually, many microorganisms coexist around the root system of plants.

Summer is associated with beautiful flowers. Both in the garden and in the rooms you want to admire the luxurious inflorescences and touching flowers. And for this it is not at all necessary to use cut bouquets. In the assortment of the best indoor plants there are many beautifully flowering species. In the summer, when they receive the brightest lighting and the optimal duration of daylight hours, they are able to outshine any bouquet. Short-lived or just annual crops look like living bouquets.

You can add an exquisite taste to any dish with the help of spices. You can buy them at any store, but most often in winter it is difficult to find fresh herbs at a good price. We bring to your attention a list of herbs, the cultivation of which can be carried out in your country house.

Where to place herbs

You can place spicy herbs anywhere, the main thing is to determine the scale of seedlings of vitamins. You can plant them in a mixborder, in the garden or on the windowsill of the house. If you decide to plant spicy herbs, then it is better to make a raised bed for them, dividing the area with bricks or stones into several zones.

It is also important to consider that spicy herbs should be near the house. A small well of spices on the windowsill will provide quick access to herbs regardless of the weather or season, but they need to be provided with artificial light using phytolamps.

When is the best time to plant greens and what to choose

It is good if the greens are present on your table all year round. For most types of greenery, long daylight hours and warmth are needed. These conditions are best observed in the summer. You can plant greens for an early harvest before winter and early spring, repeat sowing in the summer - this will provide you with vitamins all season. The presence of a greenhouse or greenhouse can extend the growing period by a few more weeks.

Planting in the spring

The end of April-beginning of May is the optimal time for sowing greens in open ground in central Russia. First, we sow cold-resistant crops: dill, parsley, celery, sorrel, perennial onions and onion sets per feather.

Onion is an unpretentious crop, because it can be planted in the spring

When planning planting, keep in mind that cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkin, squash, legumes, green manure are good predecessors for greens. Permissible: beets, tomatoes, early potatoes, peppers, eggplant, spices. Bad predecessors: cabbage of medium and late varieties, carrots, turnips.

Since sowing is carried out at a very early date, a bed for greenery must be prepared in the fall:

  1. Choose a fairly bright and high place on your site, which is freed from snow early.
  2. Dig up the area for crops, remove the roots of perennial weeds.
  3. Fertilize: a bucket of compost or humus per 1 m 2, 15–20 g of ammonium nitrate, 8–10 g of potassium sulfate and 10–12 g of superphosphate.
  4. Make a bed. The height will depend on the level of groundwater: if the level is high, raise the bed to 30–40 cm so that there is no stagnant water. At a low level, a height of 15–20 cm will suffice.

What greens can be planted in summer

To obtain greenery in a continuous mode, repeated crops are carried out with an interval of 20 days until mid-August. For summer sowing, early crops that quickly yield a crop are well suited: parsley, lettuce, dill, spinach.

In summer, you can sow greens not on a separate bed, but on a free place in a garden or greenhouse, greenhouse, taking into account the compatibility of crops:

  • parsley goes well with strawberries, tomatoes;
  • salad - with cabbage, radish, eggplant, onion;
  • dill - with cucumbers;
  • basil - with eggplant, pepper, tomatoes;
  • spinach - with potatoes, strawberries, carrots, beets, tomatoes, beans.

Many types of greens can be used in mixed plantings.

What to choose in autumn

In autumn, you can sow seeds of cold-resistant crops, such as dill, parsley, black onion, spinach, sorrel.

A bed for winter crops is best prepared in September, following the same rules by which we prepare a place for planting greenery in the spring.

We start planting during a cold snap and slight frosts, when the air temperature drops to 0 0, and the ground temperature to +3 0 - +4 0:

  1. Make sowing grooves 1–4 cm deep.
  2. Sow dry seeds.
  3. Sprinkle soil on top, mulch with peat or compost.
  4. In the northern regions, additionally cover (you can use, for example, spruce branches).

With the help of spruce paws, you can cover winter plantings

In early spring, after the snow melts, all that remains is to remove the spruce branches and wait for the emergence of seedlings. And to get an even earlier harvest in the spring, cover the bed with winter crops with a film or covering material.

Growing greens in a greenhouse

The presence of a greenhouse allows you to sow greens two to three weeks earlier than in open ground.

First of all, it is worth planting onion sets on a feather. Bulbs can be placed close to each other, the so-called bridge method. For quick germination, pre-soak the onion in warm water and cut off the top of the head, and then plant it, pressing it into the ground a little. Water without allowing the soil to dry out, and after 2-3 weeks the feather can be cut off or the bulbs can be pulled out completely.

Onion sets on a feather can be planted in a bridge way

For early consumption in the greenhouse, you can sow such types of greens as parsley, lettuce, dill, spinach. By the time the main crops are planted, the greenery can already be removed. Part of the greenery is left in the greenhouse until technical ripeness. So, parsley, basil, spinach go well with tomatoes and even give them an extra taste. Lettuce and basil go well with eggplant, and dill goes well with cucumbers.

Early ripening greens are also sown after harvesting vegetables in the greenhouse, which allows you to get a crop before the onset of frost.

In the southern regions, it is possible to grow greens all year round in an unheated greenhouse, in other regions this is only possible if there is heating and good lighting.

Features at home

Many types of greens can be successfully grown at home. First of all, these are crops with an early ripening period: watercress, spinach, basil, onion sets for greens. It is possible to grow dill and parsley on the windowsill, but it should be borne in mind that their seeds germinate within 2 weeks.

At home, each type of greenery is best planted in a separate pot or container.

At home, it is better to sow greens in the spring, when daylight hours are already getting quite long, it will be more natural for plants. If you wish, you can experiment with growing greens in January using phytolamps.

In autumn, you can extend the life of garden plants: dig with a clod of earth and plant parsley, celery in pots - they grow well after pruning and will delight you with fresh greens on the windowsill.

Growing herbs hydroponically

Currently, landless plant growing methods are gaining popularity. Hydroponics is the cultivation in nutrient solutions, when the roots of the plant are located in an aqueous or solid medium (for example, coconut fiber).

Flow, or circulation system, suitable for growing greens and low plants

To grow greens in this way, you will need special equipment that is produced by enterprises or can be done independently.

What greens can be planted together on the same bed

In your garden, you can take separate beds for growing greens. The convenience lies in the fact that some types of greens are perennials: onions, sorrel. In one place, they will grow well for 4-5 years.

Biennial plants (parsley, celery) form a trunk in the first year, bloom in the second year. If you plant these plants in a separate bed, you will get the earliest first greens from it. Sowing should be carried out in furrows with an interval of 30–40 cm. Near perennials, annual crops can be sown in autumn or spring.

A garden bed with greens can be placed next to the house to pluck the plants just before use

Place your vitamin garden closer to home: since the greens are best picked just before use, such a place will be very convenient. In addition, in the spring, the approach to it will not be difficult due to high soil moisture.

plant care

For successful growth, plants need timely watering, loosening the soil, weeding, top dressing.

How to feed greens

Many types of greens, such as lettuce, grow very quickly, so the need for fertilizer is low. It is important not to allow an excess of fertilizers, as the amount of nitrates will increase and the plants will become unsuitable for food, doing more harm than good to the body. The best way is soil preparation. Since autumn, all the necessary nutrients are introduced, and during the season, once every two weeks, you can feed with organic fertilizers, compost, herbal infusions.

Herbal infusion recipe:

  1. A barrel (200 liters) is 2/3 filled with grass or weeds (without seeds).
  2. Add 0.5–1 liter of old jam or compote, they will create a breeding ground for bacteria and microorganisms.
  3. Fill the barrel with water and cover, leave for 2-5 days.
  4. Dilute the resulting solution with water (1 to 10 liters) and you can water the plants.

How often to water

It is very important to provide greenery with moisture in dry times. In hot weather, plants are watered daily; in cooler weather, watering after two or three days will be sufficient. It is advisable not to moisten the leaves to prevent their decay.

Drip irrigation will protect delicate lettuce leaves from decay

Protection against diseases and pests

Greens, like vegetables, can be affected by diseases (powdery mildew, root rot) and pests (aphids, mites, psyllids, moths).

It is best to take preventive measures:

  • compliance with crop rotation;
  • thinning of plants;
  • loosening the soil;
  • the use of drip irrigation or watering under the root;
  • selection of disease-resistant varieties.

During the summer, use folk remedies, for example, spraying with infusion of tobacco dust (0.5 kg of dust, pour 10 liters of water, insist for a day, squeeze, dilute 1 to 1 with water and spray). Perennial crops can be treated in the fall with Bordeaux liquid from diseases and pests, if they appear.

Greens will help provide the body with vitamins, minerals, and other useful substances. It adds flavor and aroma to any dish. Growing is possible even for beginners and amateurs, and if desired, fresh herbs can be grown year-round.
