Myrrh-streaming icons: scientific explanation and photo. Myrrh-streaming and crying icons

There are many miracles in life, that's for sure. Some of them science finds natural explanations, some debunks as a trick, and there are miracles before which even pundits reverently bow their heads. One of them is crying icons. The phenomenon when the tomb of a saint, an icon or a crucifix began to exude a fragrant liquid - myrrh, has long been known. A few years ago, the myrrh-streaming of an icon was considered the rarest and most formidable sign from above, which plunged entire generations of people into awe. However, now, this minute, thousands of icons are weeping simultaneously in hundreds of Orthodox churches in Russia and abroad.

The general “weeping of the saints” began in the mid-90s of the last century with isolated cases of myrrh-streaming images, but by 1999 it had acquired such proportions that the clergy had to establish a special Commission to describe the miraculous phenomena taking place in the Russian Orthodox Church. The commission includes both theologians and scientists of an absolutely atheistic profile - physicists and chemists. The preliminary conclusions of the commission (precisely preliminary, since the wave of church miracles is growing rapidly) are as follows: something unprecedented is happening in the history of Russia, and perhaps in the entire two thousand-year history of the church.

Miro - wooden oil with red wine and incense, used in Christian rites. According to legend, the rite of chrismation was established by the apostles. The main components - oil and wine - are poured into cauldrons and boiled over low heat. At the end of the process, incense is added to the thickened mixture, the resulting myrrh is poured into consecrated vessels, sealed and sent to the dioceses. The chrism is kept in the altars on the thrones, it is used by the church when performing the sacraments of chrismation of Christians after baptism, during the coronation, and also during the consecration of the thrones of temples. So, the "heavenly" myrrh has nothing to do with the church and is named so only by analogy: it is oily, with a strong smell - usually roses or lilacs. However, this is not a rule - the "heavenly" world may not smell of anything. It also differs in chemical composition.

If before it was believed that only old, prayerful icons had the “right” to stream myrrh, now it has absolutely no meaning. Today, the metal casing, and the glass surface of the icon case, and reproductions, and photographs, and photocopies can stream myrrh. Repeatedly weeping icons were captured on a photo or video camera. Here are just a few examples that can outline the scale of events.

Near Orenburg, in the St. Nicholas Church in the village of Nizhnyaya Pavlovka, there are as many as five myrrh-streaming icons. The Tabynskaya Icon of the Mother of God was the first to cry. There was a phenomenon on the holy keys of Bashkiria, where the parishioners of the temple made a pilgrimage with the icon, and this is recorded in the annals of the local monastery.

On the mountain during the divine liturgy, a bright ray of sun fell on the Mother of God, - says the rector of the temple, hieromonk Anatoly. - And she began to stream myrrh. The icon literally expired: one “tear” flowed from the right hand of the Savior, another from the right shoulder of the Virgin, and the third appeared below. The icon streamed myrrh all day, we put saucers to it, put cotton wool. When the cotton wool was soaked with an oily liquid, it was divided into small pieces and distributed to believers.

Then the icons of the Mother of God "The Inexhaustible Chalice" and Vladimir's were streaming myrrh. "Inexhaustible Chalice" - a personal icon of Father Anatoly. But since there are too many people suffering from alcoholism in the village, he often brings her to the temple. Then the Minsk icon of the Mother of God wept, and behind it was the image of Tikhon the Wonderworker of Zadonsk. By the way, usually Tikhon is asked to solve some domestic problems, he also helps in getting a job. All icons during myrrh-streaming are fragrant in different ways. The icon of the Tabynskaya Mother of God smells of roses, Tikhon of Zadonsky exudes a sweet smell, like caramel or cake. Minskskaya smells like coniferous forest.

On the day of the opening of the orphanage in the village of Raduzhny near Vladimir, its pupils received a gift from the Archbishop of Vladimir and Suzdal Evlogy - an icon depicting the Blessed Matrona. Three days later, the icon released myrrh. A subtle, unusual aroma, as it turned out later, was felt by everyone who went up in those days to the third floor of the shelter, where a small altar was equipped. But there was a bouquet of white lilies nearby, and therefore no one paid much attention to the smell. Two days later, the flowers were removed and the fragrance became even stronger. Soon one of the pupils found drops of moisture on the saint's face. According to the orphanage's teachers, the girl kissed the icon with her burnt hand, which healed almost immediately.

In Voronezh, the face of the Valaam Mother of God streams myrrh in the cave church of the Kostomarovsky Convent. The ancient icon has its own difficult fate - it is in bullet holes. It is believed that this icon was shot at one time by drunken Red Army soldiers.

Recently, a bleeding icon of the Savior was transported all over Russia. The icon belongs to Antonina Efimova, a resident of the village of Derzhavino, Orenburg Region. The image began to exude blood drops with a characteristic smell of blood more than four years ago. Yes, so much so that the face of the Savior was covered with dried scabs, as it were, and became almost indistinguishable. Bishop Sergius of Samara said on this occasion:

The first time I heard about it, I had my doubts. The Church is always very scrupulous about such miracles, carefully checking their veracity. But when I saw this image, doubts disappeared. On the icon from the head of the Savior, straight from the thorns of the crown of thorns, red trickles flowed down, and I felt the natural smell of blood. When the Samara experts took this exuding red liquid for chemical analysis, it turned out that this was real human blood plasma, the fourth group.

It is impossible to list all the facts. Even from distant Chicago come similar testimonies.

Archdeacon Zacchaeus (Wood) spoke of the miracles taking place in America as follows:

In our diocese, the Lord has lately revealed weeping and myrrh-streaming icons. The first apparition took place a few years ago in the Albanian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas. We also know about another icon of the Mother of God from Cicero, a suburban area of Chicago. She began to cry on the feast of St. George the Victorious. Another icon, which belonged to a pious Arab woman, streamed myrrh in her house. Surprisingly, the icons that were applied to the Antiochian icon in Cicero and to this one, even paper reproductions, began to stream myrrh and cry, which was an extraordinary miracle.

And, of course, everyone knows about the famous Moscow weeping icons: the Tsar-Martyr Nicholas II in the Nikolsky Church on Bolshaya Ordynka and the myrrh-bleeding icon of the Mother of God “Seven-arrows”, which, although kept in a private collection, managed to bypass half the country with a procession.

Naturally, both church hierarchs and scientists have certain questions about so many miracles. The idea of falsification in this case can be dismissed immediately. Studies have shown that myrrh is deposited on icons, crosses and oklads from the outside like condensate, so the humor about holes drilled by "cunning priests" is out of place here.

Here is the opinion of Vladimir PAVLOV, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Leading Researcher at the Moscow Institute of Astronomy. V. A. Steklova:

The myrrh-streaming icon, on which the sacred myrrh is formed “out of nothing”, violates the scientific concept of the universe. After all, what happens with it? “Out of nothing” matter is formed - myrrh, tears, drops of blood on the icons. For a scientist, this is an amazing discovery! From the standpoint of modern science, this can only happen by converting energy into matter, a process that is the opposite of that in which matter is converted into energy in a nuclear power plant. It is easier to doubt and consider yourself deceived... There is, of course, the corpuscular-wave theory that a single matter can manifest itself both as a wave and as matter, a particle. Perhaps myrrh-streaming is one of such manifestations. You just need to remember: not all knowledge in the world is obtained by scientific means. There is knowledge about which we cannot say at all where it comes from. We just know that it is. But there are aspects in the manifestations of miracles that can be studied within the framework of science. For example, the chemical composition of the world. In Klin, the icons feature organic oil, which is similar in composition to sunflower oil. But, of course, knowledge of its chemical composition does not bring us any closer to unraveling the phenomenon itself.

True, Christians around the world are not at all concerned about the scientific aspect of the problem, but for good or for worse, Orthodox icons wept en masse. The official position of the church was expressed by the head of the communication service of the Moscow Patriarchate Viktor MALUKHIN:

Like this. And in general - wait and see.

R. S. In the biological laboratories of Kyiv University, an analysis was made of the world exuded by the relics of saints resting in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Miro turned out to be a substance with a high protein content - but this is not at all important. Biologists found it difficult to classify, but they said firmly: only a living organism can exude such a substance.

Since ancient times, myrrh-streaming has been presented to people as something mysterious and unknown, sometimes even mystical. This is due to the fact that so far it has not been possible to fully unravel the mystery of this phenomenon. Many scientists have conducted experiments to identify the nature of the origin of this phenomenon, but to this day it remains a mystery and a miracle. There are also many falsifications, which is why some even deeply religious people have long lost faith in the veracity of the “weeping” icons.

Myrrh-streaming is a phenomenon unique in its nature. In the Christian world, it is considered nothing more than a miracle, and the oily liquid that emerges from them is miraculous.

Mirra - This is an oil with a pleasant smell, which is made from the grains of oilseeds and essential plants.. It is this liquid that appears on the surface of the image, from where the name itself comes from. It sometimes has a different consistency: thick, like spruce resin, or more liquid, resembling dew. Therefore, sometimes this process is called "smoking" or "growth".

However, the bleeding of icons should not be taken literally. In fact, it has a different nature. It is known that the blood from the icons does not ooze, as is commonly believed. As a rule, this is the same oily liquid that appears on the surface of the image during myrrh flow. The only difference is that it mixes with dark paint on the canvas, as a result of which brownish smudges resembling blood are formed.

It is believed that such a phenomenon is a harbinger of any bloody events: wars, terrorist attacks, diseases, and so on. Tears of blood can serve as a reminder that people have distanced themselves from God and commit terrible misdeeds, sinful deeds. Holy faces shed blood as a reminder that humanity should come to its senses and become more humane.

Usually this happens on the eve of any significant events in history: wars, disasters, cataclysms. It is as if a sign sent down from heaven, so that people think about their deeds. There have been repeatedly recorded cases when the icons cried the day before any incident. So, in 2004, an icon with the image of Tikhon of Zadonsk began to stream myrrh, and the next day a TU-154 plane with passengers on board crashed.

A few days before the terrorist attack in Beslan, namely on August 29, 2004, the holy face began to stream myrrh, warning of a terrible event that would subsequently terrify the world.

Another example is the bleeding icon of a nunnery in the Leningrad region on the day the conflict in Ukraine began. And there are many such examples.

However, such a phenomenon may not always carry a negative omen. The ministers of the church claim that such a sign can mean God's grace sent down to people. It is believed that such an image is miraculous, able to heal from any disease, protect from danger, avert troubles and misfortunes from the person who touches it. Thousands of parishioners from all around flock to the monastery, where the icons stream myrrh.

However, the miracle of myrrh-streaming can take place both in a monastery and in the home of believers. There are cases when not one, but all the icons in the house or in the church began to stream myrrh. This is a truly wonderful phenomenon, but people have always been wary and ambivalent about such an event.

On the one hand, such a sign always carries a bit of uncertainty: what this phenomenon portends - good or evil, and what one should prepare for, no one knows. On the other hand, even deeply religious people sometimes doubt the authenticity of such a phenomenon. This is because history knows many cases when, in a similar way, the clergy tried to deceive the people and the authorities in order to achieve certain goals.

So, under Peter I, the clergy of one of the churches said that they had a phenomenon of myrrh-streaming icons in their cathedral. The revelation was not long in coming. Despite the fact that the king was a believer, he still doubted the authenticity of what was happening. The priests unanimously declared that in this way God mourns the old order, which was abolished by the Great Tsar. Peter I dared to suggest that, using this event, the priests want to persuade him to cancel innovations and return to the old order.

He was rather skeptical about such a "divine" manifestation and ordered the myrrh-streaming image to be taken away from the cathedral. After arriving at his palace, the tsar ruined the icon and found capsules with liquid in it, located inside it in the area of the eyes. In turn, small holes were made in the eyes through which the liquid came out.

In this regard, the king issued a formidable decree, which read: “If icons cry in any other church, then priestly asses will cry with blood”. Since then, the images no longer "wept".

It is noteworthy that when dew appears on the icon, a special commission, which includes scientists and clergymen, immediately arrives at the scene of the event to testify to the authenticity of this fact. For the purity of the experiment, it is placed in a special capsule.

Unfortunately, at all times there were scammers who tried to falsify such a miracle. Many succeeded in this: gullible people went in droves to the church, where a similar phenomenon took place, and carried alms. Some imitated the phenomenon for selfish purposes, others - to glorify themselves and their church. However, there are certain patterns, thanks to which it is possible to determine how authentic such a phenomenon is:

  1. Myrrh-streaming is not tied to a specific place.
  2. The crying of the Holy Faces can be seen by everyone, and not by one or several people, since this is a true miracle.
  3. The image does not cease to stream myrrh because it was transferred to another place.

If the phenomenon that happened contradicts any of these signs, then most likely it is a hoax.

Trying to find out why the myrrh-streaming icons, people have identified some features of this process. On the basis of such features, signs were compiled, thanks to which this manifestation can be timed to coincide with a particular event:

  • The weeping icon is a sign of great changes to come. Light tears are positive changes, dark or "bloody" ones are bad changes.
  • An icon weeping with "dew" is a good omen, promising a change for the better.
  • The abundantly myrrh-streaming face of the saint is a harbinger of good news and events.
  • The icon began to stream myrrh in the church - good news for the parishioners, the church and the city as a whole.
  • The image streams myrrh at home - a miracle will happen in the family, perhaps a miraculous healing.
  • The icon of the Almighty is crying - to favorable events, changes, harmony in business and happiness in life.
  • The icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is a good sign, positive changes in life.
  • The face of the Mother of God - the birth of a child, healthy children, healing from ailments.
  • The seven-shot icon - peace and tranquility in the family, protection from the evil eye.

It is also a known fact that myrrh-streaming can be either single, when one or more icons are crying, or massive and even spread to several states.

It is known that in Russia it is not allowed to conduct experiments on the icons of the Saints, especially those that are located directly in the church. However, some facts were nevertheless established experimentally. What must happen to the faces of the saints so that they “weep”? It is impossible to doubt the fact that there really are images that stream myrrh. Nevertheless, many scientists doubt the authenticity of the myrrh-streaming icons. They have been trying to find a scientific explanation for this process for many decades. Some believe that this is nothing more than a natural process of moisture formation under specific conditions.

Also, the following events may be involved in the appearance of such a phenomenon:

  • The precipitation of oil due to the contact of parishioners with the Holy Face. After anointing with oil, the person kisses the icon, leaving oil drops on it.
  • Condensation of oil vapors: often oil drips onto the images from the lamps that hang in front of them.
  • Capillary effect: moisture that comes to it from the outside can seep through the icon. The sources of this moisture can be very diverse, depending on the specific case. There were situations when such an effect was not created intentionally.

Today, people from different parts of the world are interested in the fact why icons stream myrrh, the scientific explanation of which cannot be interpreted unambiguously. Many skeptics refer to the fact that such a phenomenon, from the point of view of science and common sense, is impossible. However, the fact remains: all over the world from time to time there are myrrh-streaming icons, over which observations and experiments are carried out in order to determine the essence of such a phenomenon.

If suddenly an icon began to cry in the house, then you need to take this event seriously. Firstly, it should not be wiped, let alone washed. Secondly, it is best not to disturb the image and invite a priest to the house, who could testify to this fact. It should be remembered that such a phenomenon can last a very long time. It should be treated with respect and respect to the icon that brought a miraculous sign.

Whatever message the weeping face of the Saint carries with it, people should pay close attention to such a sign from above. Perhaps it is worth thinking about the mission of man on Earth, about what we bring to this world, and what it will be like after us. Of course, this miraculous phenomenon is a call to keep God's commandments, which many people have forgotten, and a reminder that life is given to a person once. It is necessary to live it with dignity, leaving a bright memory of yourself for future generations.

Most people do not believe in miracles, but they happen right before our eyes, and denying that this is really something unusual is simply pointless. Who leads them, where they come from, is difficult to figure out, but Orthodox Christians believe that a miracle comes from the Lord God.

The Bible tells that Jesus Christ performed miracles in front of people more than once, and today these miracles can also be observed. But it is important to remember that a miracle happens only where people really believe in it and where they want to see it with their own eyes.

How can icons cry?

A weeping icon does not at all mean that tears will flow from the eyes of the image, it is most correct to say that a special oil called myrrh begins to stand out, but this oil should not be confused with another oil that is prepared by priests and used for Orthodox rites.

Very rarely, oil begins to appear on the icons, which has nothing to do with the oil used for chrismation. The tears of an icon can be different in their consistency, for example, oil can be thick or liquid.

What does the weeping icon portend?

In fact, icons cry in churches extremely rarely and, as a rule, after that some terrible event occurs in the world, therefore it is generally accepted that the tears of an icon are a sign or a sign to humanity that warns people that it is necessary to repent. And then, perhaps, the Lord will forgive his children and prevent the threat. In no case should the tears of the icon be considered a bad sign, on the contrary, it is a blessed sign sent by God.

The oil that comes from the icon is necessarily collected and given to parishioners in the church, it is considered healing, and many people can once again be convinced that miracles exist, because it can cure even the most serious diseases.

Historical cases and interesting facts about myrrh-streaming icons

For the first time, the weeping icon was seen in Veliky Ustyug. Here lived a holy fool named Procopius, who had a special gift of foresight. Procopius urged people to repent, otherwise they would all perish. No one took the words of Procopius seriously, and then one day a black cloud appeared over the city, which covered the whole city. People in fright rushed to pray near the icon in the church, which immediately began to exude myrrh. The parishioners collected it in vessels, and then smeared themselves and thanked God for forgiving them their sins.

Later, a miracle happened again, and already in 1953 in Sicily, the icon of the Virgin Mary with a baby in her arms began to stream myrrh. There was too much controversy around this case, but scientists wanted to verify the authenticity of the tears. And when they took the liquid for analysis, they were convinced that it was real human tears in terms of composition.

Another miraculous crying icon is "The Laying of a Crown of Thorns on the Head of the Savior." This icon is in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Myrrh began to stand out on the image as early as 1572. In that year, streams of fragrant oil were constantly flowing down the icon, which somehow resembled blood, and this was a sign before the terrible tragedy that happened in France. Later this event became known as the St. Bartholomew's Night.

What icons are myrrh-streaming?

Neither scientists nor priests can answer many questions. For example, no one can say for sure why the icons are crying, since this is not always an omen of something bad. It is also worth noting that the crying of the icons can also be different. Icons are crying all over the world, but most of all such images, oddly enough, are located precisely on the territory of Russia.

The clergy say that recently there have been much more myrrh-streaming icons than ever before. Not only old images can cry, but also icons that were painted not so long ago. The myrrh-streaming icon is considered a real miracle, and not a single scientist in the world has yet been able to study the origin of this oil, which is released.

A weeping icon does not have to be depicted on a tree. There were cases when myrrh appeared even in photographs of icons or photocopies.

A huge number of scientists constantly studied the consistency of the oil, and none of them could find out exactly what it consists of. Recently, they even came to the conclusion that the oil has a high protein content, but as it turned out, such a substance can only be released from a living organism. Therefore, the tears of icons remain the biggest unsolved mystery in the world.

How should one treat such a miracle?

The weeping icon is a sign that is explained in different ways. Orthodox Christians treat this phenomenon with great trepidation. Priests try not to advertise the myrrh-streaming of icons, because modern people pay attention to an external miracle and forget that Jesus did not recognize signs. It should be remembered that a miracle must be a spiritual necessity, and it achieves its goal only if one believes in it.

Icon of the Mother of God weeping

The most famous is the weeping icon of the Mother of God. She streamed myrrh for 15 years. For the Orthodox, this was one of the greatest miracles of the last century. The keeper of this icon is Joseph Munoz, who, having seen the icon once, decided that it should stay with him.

There was an icon on Athos, and when Joseph first asked to give it away, he was refused, but later the abbot came to Joseph and gave the icon, saying that the Mother of God herself blessed him for this act. The tears that were collected from the icon helped many people to heal. To date, the fate of the icon of the Mother of God is unknown, since in 1999 Joseph was killed and the icon was stolen.

Myrrh-streaming icon in Belgorod

Miracles do happen and not too far away. More recently, on the territory of the Belgorod clinic, where there is a hospital church, the icon of the Matrona of Moscow began to stream myrrh. The weeping icon in Belgorod caused a real storm of emotions among the Orthodox, who lined up in a huge live queue to see the miracle with their own eyes, and, of course, kiss it. As soon as it became known that the icon began to stream myrrh, a procedure was carried out that was supposed to testify that this was really a miracle, and not someone's cruel joke.

The Holy Matronushka is not the only weeping icon in Belgorod. In a small village near Belgorod there is a wooden church built in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The icon also began to stream myrrh in it, and everything happened on the evening before the great feast of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos.

All Orthodox Christians should know that it is impossible to prove the origin of such a miracle, a person should believe and see what the Lord shows him. No analysis has been able to prove that the oil is of earthly origin. Therefore, it is simply impossible to shake the faith of people who really believe with all their soul in the Lord God.

The entire religious world is based on faith, and from time to time, significant phenomena and events appear in one or another, which either strengthen or completely eradicate people's faith. This category includes the phenomenon of myrrh-streaming icons, the scientific explanation of which has not yet been found. Although after each such case, scientists are trying to find an explanation for what is happening. However, they do not always succeed.

What does this mean and what does it portend?

To begin with, you need to understand that the term "myrrh-streaming" in itself is conditional. Miro is an oil-incense, which is made by combining more than fifty types of vegetable oils, resins and fragrant herbs.

Myrrh is used when performing the sacrament of chrismation, and in cases where Catholic or Protestant Christians convert to Orthodoxy. This oil is brewed for only one week a year - during Holy Week.

The substance that is released from the icons during the myrrh-streaming only remotely resembles the traditional myrrh. They have a similar at first glance oily texture and fragrance. By the way, not always, and these two properties unite the real and the "wonderful" world. The color, smell and consistency of the substance that is released from can be different: from thick, viscous-resinous to transparent-watery.

Priests share this phenomenon into several types:

  • Myrrh-streaming- when the icons emit an oily substance.
  • Oil removal- when a thick dark substance is released, similar to resin.
  • dewdrop- when the secreted liquid is clear and looks like ordinary water.

These three types of religious miracles are united by the term "myrrh-streaming". In Christianity, the allocation of liquids by icons is not a rare case. These events are also divided into three types:

  • "Crying Icons". They are quite rare and are considered a formidable omen. The most famous “weeping icon” is considered to be the icon of the Mother of God, which has always predicted difficult times for Russia.
  • "Myrrh-streaming icons". Here opinions differ. Some believe that the myrrh stands out in anticipation of important changes in history, while others are more pessimistic and argue that this phenomenon means future difficulties and trials that the people will have to endure.
  • "Bleeding Icons". This is the rarest and most formidable sign in Christianity. Only a few cases of icons bleeding are known, and all of them were harbingers of terrible cataclysms, destructive wars and catastrophes.

scientific explanation

There are a lot of skeptics these days. There are many scientific and non-scientific explanations for the phenomenon of myrrh-streaming icons as a phenomenon.

For example, some believe that this miracle is just a scam on the part of monks and clergy, who deliberately sprinkle pre-prepared myrrh on icons, thereby increasing the popularity of a particular temple or monastery. This version gained particular fame after icons in Russia began to stream myrrh on a massive scale.

Due to the growing distrust, the church began to take any manifestations of myrrh-streaming more seriously.. Today, before publicizing the fact that the icon is streaming myrrh, many churches first seal the doors and arrange an internal check to exclude any human factor.

For several days the icons are under constant surveillance. and, if this phenomenon is confirmed, then the doors open again for pilgrimage and worship of the weeping icon.

There were also cases when the clergy "forced" the icons to stream myrrh, drilling small holes in them and hanging vials of liquid from the back. “Tears” were squeezed out of the bottles with various devices and appeared on the icon itself, as a miraculous phenomenon or a sign of God.

Sometimes the icon is mistaken for myrrh-streaming due to its simple fogging due to a sharp temperature drop.. This happens when a large number of people gather in the church in cold weather and from their breathing water droplets form on the surface of the icons.

exposure

Nowadays there is a special "commission on miracles". It consists of believing scientists, physicists and representatives of the clergy. They travel to the most famous and remarkable cases of miraculous phenomena and try to give each of the phenomena a scientific explanation.

As the members of such a commission say, most often the icons “stream” with the most ordinary vegetable oil, which is very convenient, because if it were water, it would simply glass down and there is a high probability that no one would have noticed this “miracle”. In those cases where the icons ooze myrrh, a chemical analysis of this blood reveals a simple mixture of glycerin and carmine, which can easily be made by mixing a little potassium and ferric chloride.

Oddly enough, when the control and checks on the phenomenon of “weeping icons” intensified, the icons simply stopped crying. For example, under Soviet rule, there were practically no statements about such phenomena. Nowadays, the church actively cooperates with the state, receiving support and recognition. Hence the frequent cases of such "miracles".

Icon of Matronushka in Belgorod

In 2017, one of the most famous cases of myrrh-streaming was the “weeping icon” in the temple of the Matrona of Moscow in Belgorod. According to media reports, this happened on the eve of March 8, but the official statement was made only on March 31, when the phenomenon was checked by a specially convened commission.

According to the clergy, myrrh flow itself took place on March 8 and 18, which in Orthodox Christianity are considered the days of finding the relics of the Blessed Martyr of Moscow and God's Hierarch Luke.

As soon as the clergy made an official statement, a huge line of believers immediately lined up at the doors of the temple, who were eager to venerate and receive a blessing from the myrrh-streaming icon.

The second Belgorod miracle is the myrrh-streaming of the icon in the surgical building of the main city hospital, at which the temple, built in honor of the Crimean archpastor, is located.

According to eyewitnesses, trickles of an oily substance were noticeable on a simple paper icon, which exuded a pleasant smell. An interesting fact is that all the streams, except for one, had a direction from top to bottom, and the top one first went a little to the left and only then went down.

Case in Gorelovo

Another miracle of 2017 is the myrrh-streaming of the icons of Jesus Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos in the St. Petersburg diocese in the church of the Hieromartyr Thaddeus in Gorelovo. According to the clergy of the temple, the myrrh flows through the icons there like streams. In order to collect this composition, a thick layer of cotton wool was laid on the lower frame of the icon, which changes every day.

Condensation was the first explanation for this case, but the icon is not under glass, and this possibility was quickly ruled out. Until now, no one can explain why the icon “wept”. However, the workers of the temple are filled with optimism and interpret this phenomenon only as the grace of God. Needless to say, every day a huge line of people who want to touch the miracle gathers at the door of the church.

During the time of Peter I

Peter the Great became one of the first Russian tsars who began to fight dishonest priests, in whose temples icons streamed myrrh with enviable regularity. During his reign, the king now and then organized raids on holy places to verify the authenticity of miracles. One of such demonstrative tests is well known in history, during which Peter appeared before the “weeping icon” of the Most Holy.

After carefully studying, this phenomenon did not make any impression on the Almighty.. Returning to the capital, the king sent a letter to the abbot of the monastery, in which it was said that from that day on, the Mother of God was forbidden to cry, otherwise "the backs of the priests would cry with blood."

At first, after such a statement, the Russian people spoke of the tsar in a not very pleasant way. However, Oddly enough, after that, the cases of myrrh-streaming icons decreased significantly.

According to historians, the priests of that time did not like the progressive policy of Peter the Great and they tried to resist it through various divine phenomena. For example, Peter ordered to shave off the beards - the icons wept. With the help of such methods, the clergy tried to turn the people against the king, however, he guessed their plan in time and all the miracles ended there.

Icons are a miracle in and of themselves. We turn through them to the Lord, the Mother of God and the patron saints for help and blessings. Each time, looking at them, the heart is filled with joy and reverence. In addition, many of the icons have miraculous powers that have helped those in need more than once. Such images include, for example: the icon of the Mother of God the Healer or the icon of the Burning Bush. Also wonderful and amazing are the appearances of icons, many of which were discovered under the most intriguing circumstances.

No matter how many secrets these creations contain, there are more and more new ones. And, of course, one cannot but recall such an amazing phenomenon as myrrh-streaming icons. Myrrh-streaming is the secretion of an oily substance that appears on the surface of the image. This substance is called Miro, hence the name of this miraculous phenomenon. Miro may have a slight pleasant smell, and its consistency varies from very thick and resinous to clear and watery. The former is more common than the latter.

The miracle of myrrh-streaming was first noticed a very long time ago. Some of myrrh-streaming did not last long, while other rare relics continue to exude the world to this day. One of the most famous icons is the Montreal Iberian Icon of the Mother of God. She is famous for the fact that her myrrh-streaming lasted 15 years.

Many cases of this amazing miracle have been recorded, witnessed by many eyewitnesses. But, of course, along with the true myrrh streams, there were many falsifications. because the temptation to offer people something wonderful is so great. Due to the attempts of unscrupulous people to attract everyone's attention by deceit, a special commission was created, which carefully checks whether the myrrh-streaming is really genuine. However, not always this phenomenon, not being a true miracle, should be a falsification. Sometimes it happens that lamp oil gets on the icon or drops fall from the face of a person who kisses the holy image in the process of chrismation. If this is not a fraud or an accident, then myrrh-streaming icons become a truly praised diva. Miro is a very complex substance, but because of its holy origin, more detailed studies are unacceptable. Therefore, this amazing phenomenon is not yet fully understood.

A commission of scientists filmed myrrh-streaming icons in the village of Lokot, Bryansk region. Before the eyes of witnesses, two dozen icons begin to emit fragrant oil. Droplets appear in seconds.

Pavel Florensky. professor: I think that with a serious attitude it will be possible to deduce the chemical composition, the process. But the miracle from this will not cease to be.

Why do icons stream myrrh? Is there a scientific explanation?

The term "myrrh-streaming" is conditional. It's just that oily spots and drops form on the icons. Its color varies from transparent white to dark yellow. Nobody knows the mechanism of miracles yet. It's just that miracles "on order" do not happen.

In fact, myrrh is a specially prepared consecrated composition of oil and more than forty fragrant herbs and substances. The compilation and consecration of the world takes place once every few years in the Assumption Cathedral in Moscow, after which it is sent in special vessels to all the dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church. Is it right to say that the weeping icons highlight the myrrh? Rather, experts say. The miraculous event itself can develop according to different scenarios, but the result is always the same - drops of a certain oily liquid of organic origin appear on the surface of the icon. They may be few - one or two. And it may be that the entire surface of the icon will be moistened. Drops may be colorless or colored. They may be odorless, or they may be fragrant. For example, those people who had the opportunity to contemplate the tears of the miraculous Iberian Icon of the Mother of God, talk about an unforgettable fragrance. At the same time, it is not quite right to talk about myrrh-streaming, experts say. Rather, this unusual process is appropriately called oil emergence or oil condensation. The appearance of oil on the icon, when the sacred world is formed from nothing, violates absolutely all the laws of nature. This is a real miracle, which by definition contradicts science, - says Pavel Florensky.

But in science there is not and cannot be the concept of a miracle. The world is arranged in such a way that the laws of nature in it are carried out with inexorability, and any miracle is perceived simply as a very rare, almost unbelievable, but nevertheless an event.

But both wooden icons and those printed in a typographical way stream myrrh. There were even cases when myrrh appeared in photographs of icons. Therefore, it can be assumed that all these phenomena may not be signs at all, but have a completely different meaning and purpose. True miracles happen where there is faith. In unbelief or lack of faith, only false miracles are possible, and therefore the mass appearance of mysterious myrrh streams in the Orthodox environment cannot but alert us. Yes, we know the facts of the miraculous healing of people after anointing them with myrrh released from the icon. But examples can also be given of how myrrh-streaming had a negative effect on the health of entire families.

As statistics show, icons most often stream myrrh not in old churches, but in restored or newly built ones. Where church life is just getting better. And everyone perceives this miracle differently. Some have an occult-consumer attitude towards myrrh-streaming, directed, for example, to the desire to cure a disease. Others treat such miracles with indifferent indifference.

When talking about the myrrh-streaming of icons, you need to understand that the name of this wonderful phenomenon is conditional. A certain light, oily substance that is released during miracles is not identical to the sacred ointment used in the sacrament of chrismation. A liquid appears on the icons, only reminiscent of myrrh, just as fragrant. The type, color and consistency of the resulting liquid are varied: from thick, viscous resin to dew, so sometimes they talk about oil flow or flow. Weeping icons and myrrh-streaming icons are different miraculous phenomena. Some call the miracle of myrrh-streaming tears, but in fact these are two completely different phenomena.

The weeping icon is considered a rarer miracle and a more formidable sign. From history we can say that the tears of the Virgin testify to the coming trials. And if people paid attention to this sign, brought repentance, then these tests were often prevented. It's always a warning. Whether people understand this or not, it depends on people. The bleeding of an icon in the Orthodox tradition is an even more formidable sign.

Some people believe that the myrtle that flows from the icons is tree resin or some kind of condensate. It should be noted that paper photocopies, lithographs, frescoes, photographs of icons and even metal icons also stream myrrh.

The peculiarity of our time, in particular, is expressed in the fact that there is a widespread mass flow of icons. What would that mean? Christians are scratching their heads, does the Lord announce to us about coming disasters, strengthening our faith with this myrrh-streaming, or is this a manifestation of God's mercy, which He abundantly pours out on the Church? It is unlikely that we will be able to answer these questions. Only one thing is clear, myrrh-streaming is the manifestation of the Glory of God. And in this manifestation, God shows us His power over matter, which He created and subordinated to the laws established by Him. And in this manifestation of Glory, the Power of God is also manifested, by which these laws are overcome. The Creator of these laws shows us that He can overcome them and in this He is powerful.

The myrrh-streaming icon was delivered to a rural church in the Moscow region

On June 5 and 6, the constantly myrrh-streaming icon of the Mother of God "Softener of Evil Hearts" will be in the parish of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, in the village of Sosenki, Leninsky District, Moscow Region. It will be possible to anoint yourself with richly flowing myrrh on Saturday, July 5, from half past nine in the morning to seven in the evening and on Sunday, July 6, from eight in the morning to two in the afternoon.

Prayers for health with an akathist will take place on July 5 at 4 pm and on July 6 at 1 pm.

You can get to the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God from the metro station "Teply Stan" by buses 526, 508, 512, 531, 577 or by a fixed-route taxi to the Sosenki-1 stop.

REFERENCE. The Orthodox miracle - the icon of the Mother of God “Softening of Evil Hearts”, printed at the Sofrino printing house in the nineties, began to stream myrrh in May 1998, after being purchased in an ordinary church shop.

Since then, myrrh has been flowing from the image incessantly. Myrrh-streaming is so abundant that, being saturated with it, icon cases quickly deteriorate and become unusable.

With this face of the Mother of God, pilgrimages are often made in Russia and abroad.
